Why Is It Important for Iran to Fight in Syria

Syria

Here is IFP’s translation of a report by Khabar Online on the picture published by the Leader’s office:

On the top left side of the picture, we see a photo of Aleppo in Syria before the beginning of the civil war, and on the top right, we can see what happened to the same place after the war.

On the bottom right, a photo of Avicenna’s mausoleum in Hamadan is portrayed, and on the bottom right, we can read the remarks by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution about the necessity for Iran’s advisory presence in Syria.

“A person who goes from Iran to Iraq and to Syria in order to stand up against these Takfiris [extremists] in the name of defending the Ahlul Bayt’s shrines is, in fact, defending his own city,” the Leader said in an address on June 25, 2016.

“They went to fight the enemy and if they did not, this enemy would be inside the country. … If they were not stopped, we would have to fight them in Kermanshah and Hamadan and other provinces,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a January 25 meeting with families of Iranian martyrs killed in the fight against terrorism.

Death of Afghan Girl Leads to a Call for Revision of Iranian Law

Latifeh

According to a report by Young Journalists’ Club (YJC), as translated by IFP, Latifeh Rahmani, a 12-year-old Afghan immigrant died in Namazi Hospital in southern Iranian city of Shiraz on Friday afternoon.

She was in dire need of a liver transplant, but could not receive the organ because of a law that bans such procedures for illegal immigrants.

Her father told YJC that the hospital had refused to do the procedure because Latifeh was an illegal immigrant, her family could not afford the expenses, and the hospital did not have empty room for her.

However, Salamat Online has quoted the hospital officials as saying that the child was in a dire situation, and the time was not enough for such a procedure.

According to the hospital officials, Latifeh did not have enough time for the tests required for receiving the liver from a living body.

They noted that the country’s rules, as in many other countries, do not allow the transplant of body organs from the dead bodies of Iranians to the living bodies of foreign nationals.

Law Should Be Revised

In one of the first official reactions to the tragic incident, Mohammad Hossein Qorbani, the deputy chairman of Iranian Parliament’s Health Commission, underlined the need for a revision in the ban on transplant of body organs to foreign nationals.

In an interview with ISNA, as translated by IFP, Qorbani said that changes can be made to the law in case of necessity.

“Wherever people’s lives are in danger, we should not deprive them of medical services because of their foreign nationality. We should also take into the account the humanitarian aspect of the issue,” he noted.

The Parliament is ready to revise the law that bans the transplant of body organs to foreign nationals, Qorbani stressed.

Economic Goals High on Agenda in Iranian FM’s Latin America Tour: Spokesman

zarif

In comments on Saturday, Bahram Qassemi underlined that expansion of relations with Latin American and African nations have been always high on Iran’s foreign policy agenda, noting, “Strategically, the Foreign Ministry believes in a balanced approach to all countries and geographical regions in the foreign policy.”

As regards Zarif’s upcoming trip to Cuba, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela, Qassemi said representatives from tens of Iranian companies will be in the entourage in line with Iran’s policy of “export of technical and engineering services and promotion of non-oil exports” to achieve the Resistance Economy goals.

The spokesman also hailed the political and cultural commonalities between Iran and Latin America nations, as well as their common stances in international organizations, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in particular.

“Today, the Islamic Republic of Iran has such a position that it can pick its political friends and trade partners, and does not have to cooperate with certain countries or regions in the world,” Qassemi went on to say.

Zarif is scheduled to begin the six-nation tour of Latin America on Sunday with a 60-strong delegation of trade officials.

A previous trip in May 2016 took Zarif to Brazil, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Venezuela and Cuba.

The visits come against the backdrop of growing interests in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

The JCPOA came into force on January 16 and terminated all nuclear-related anti-Iran sanctions.

Faghani also refereed the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup final, which saw Barcelona take on Argentina’s River Plate.

The 38-year-old Faghani will be joined by assistant referees and compatriots Reza Sokhandan and Mohammadreza Mansouri as well Ghanaian fourth official Joseph Lamptey.

Iran, Iraq Agree on Closer Security Cooperation

Iran-Iraq-conference

Addressing a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Salim al-Jabouri in Tehran on Saturday, Larijani said they discussed a range of issues in their meeting this morning, particularly ways to counter the threat of terrorism in Iraq.

Apart from closer political coordination, Iran and Iraq are going to develop more serious security cooperation in order to cleanse the region of terrorists, Larijani added.

Iran is concerned about the fate of Muslims in the region, he went on to say, as reported by Tasnim.

The Iranian speaker also noted that he and Jabouri talked about the expansion of trade ties, saying both neighbours seek a jump in bilateral trade by removing the existing obstacles.

Iraqi Speaker: Iran Playing Active Role in Anti-ISIS Campaign

Jabouri, for his part, praised Iran’s support for the Arab country in the fight against foreign-backed ISIS terrorists, saying that Tehran has played a major role in helping the Iraqi nation.

Jabouri expressed concern over the spread of terrorism in the Middle East, saying, “We are facing a security crisis in the region, whose manifestation can be seen in ISIS and other terrorist groups.”

He further pointed to the presence of the terrorists in Iraq and said, “In such a situation, we needed neighbouring countries to side with us and it was the Islamic Republic of Iran that played an active role in this regard.”

Iran has had a major role in fighting against the ISIS terrorist group and assisting the Iraqi nation, Jabouri said.

Jabouri arrived in Tehran on Saturday morning for talks with senior Iranian officials on the latest situation in his country.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Iran, a close ally of Iraq, has been also supporting the Arab nation in the fight against ISIS since the terrorist group invaded Iraq in summer 2014.

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by ISIS.

The Takfiri terrorist group made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of ISIS offensive.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s unity, territorial integrity and prosperity.

Miguel Ernesto

According to a report carried by the official website of the festival, the 74-year-old figure will be among the distinguished guests invited to the three-day cultural event.

Littin is globally renowned as one of the most prominent personalities of the New Latin American cinema. He directed what is regarded as the most popular Chilean film of all time, dubbed El Chacal de Nahueltoro (the Jackal of Nahueltoro) in 1969.

The Chilean filmmaker has directed at least 16 feature-length movies as well as documentaries, which have vied at the Cannes Film Festival, the New York Film Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival.

His latest film dubbed Allende en su Laberinto (Allende is his Maze) was produced in 2014. It accounts the last seven hours of the life of former democratically-elected Chilean President Salvador Allende and his close allies inside the Palace of La Moneda, during the brutal military coup d’etat on September 11, 1973.

Allende died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds during the putsch led by then Army Commander-in-Chief Augusto Pinochet and aided by the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Littín was driven into exile shortly after Pinochet assumed power in Chile. He moved to Mexico and directed several films there, before taking refuge in Nicaragua.

After moving to Spain in 1984, Littín decided to return to Chile in disguise and make a documentary on the condition of the South American country under Pinochet.

He eventually returned to Chile following the resignation of the Pinochet regime.

The Ammar Popular Film Festival showcases international documentary films, fiction, animations, clips, music videos, photo albums and other kinds of media with a focus on social and economic issues in Tehran every year.

The theme of this year’s edition is the Influence of Arrogant World Powers on Other Countries. The festival aims to shed light on the CIA-assisted colonial coup in Iran, which overthrew the then government of democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq in favor of cementing the monarchical rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the then-Iranian monarch, back on August 19, 1953.

There’s No Guarantee Next US President Will Stick to JCPOA: Politician

Lee Hamilton

A former democratic Congressman and Homeland Security Advisory Council member Lee Hamilton has told Mehr News Agency that while US presidents have ‘usually’ respected deals made by their previous administrations, there is no guarantee next president would adhere to the nuclear deal with Iran.

Here is the full text of the interview:

In the letter to president Obama that you were one of the signatories, you suggested a direct diplomatic channel between Iran and the US on issues such as ISIS, Iraq and Afghanistan. What are the common interests of Iran and the US in these issues?

We were suggesting a diplomatic channel because our two countries have series of problems that we may try them to be resolved and the main way to do it is through a constant sustainable channel of talks. Iran is a major player in the region and we have some commonalities and a number of issues which we have sharp differences of opinion. My feeling was that diplomacy is necessary and if you don’t have diplomacy then I think the differences exacerbate and grow and the relationship deteriorates even further, so I think diplomacy is crucial.

Nowadays, some US presidential candidates, particularly the Republican runner Donald Trump, are talking about possible US retreatment from JCPOA. In fact, such remarks create a poisonous psychological situation discouraging cooperation or investments of banks especially the European ones with or in Iran. In other words, banks are worried about possible revocation from JCPOA by next US administration. Because of this fact investment process in Iran after lifting sanctions are not satisfactory and are very slow. How can President Obama guarantee the continuation of implementation of JCPOA during next administration?

I cannot speak for Mr. Trump, or for Mrs. Clinton on that matter. I know that there is no guarantee here and that’s just the way American political system works. Yes, it is generally true that the agreement that has been reached by a predecessor president is generally adhered. Let me emphasize again that there is no guarantee. If Mr. Trump comes in and he wants to torpedo it, he probably can do it. But it would be departure from usual practice. The usual practice is that an incoming president will accept the agreement that his or her predecessor made, but no guarantees.

If next US president annuls JCPOA, how will US as a responsible country in the international community be able to justify this? Will other US international partners back it and will they support more possible sanctions against Iran? Considering the fact that some international community members didn’t back US sanction against Iran even before nuclear agreement when sanctions were still in force, what will be the consequences for US?

That is one of the strong arguments made to continue the agreement by next president. Our allies accepted, encouraged and supported it. That is a very important factor for the US. So that it become an argument to continue the agreement. But if new president is determined to undo the agreement he has number of ways that he can do that. I just can’t predict whether he or she will do it or not.

I don’t know what next president will do, but I think if he thinks the agreement is a bad one he can do many things in foreign policy according to the US law. The point you made is right and it is a strong argument but I don’t know what he is going to do. We have to keep our words.

Some analyst and Turkish officials believe that the July 15 failed military coup in Turkey against elected Turkish government was masterminded and supported by the US. What do you think of this?

Turkey has not supported that with any evidence. The US government denies supporting coup against Turkish government.

But this is not just a claim made by Turkish officials, even some American figures like Mr. Trump has approved and claimed it?

Well, I don’t know this; I only know what our government said. My government said we did not encourage the coup and I accept that. I know a large number of people in Turkey do not accept it but I do. I do not say the US government engaged in an effort to overthrow a NATO ally even though he was doing something.

The US Foreign policy in the Middle East shows its approach toward ‘security’ issue. While the US claims that it stands for democracy and liberal values inside and outside, at the same time it is supporting some undemocratic regimes and monarchies in the region such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. It means that US prefers its allies stability and state security rather than human security and human rights. If we accept the US defends liberal values both inside and outside, how can such a double standard be justified?

The US has a number of different interests in formulation and implementation of American foreign policy. Sometimes these interests are strategic, humanitarian, economic and political. These are just American decision makers that decide which one is priority, but they often choose as your question suggests stability and backing dictators and autocrats in the Middle East. What we have done there as a nation is to elevate the concerns for stability in the region above human rights and promotion of democracy, so what the US does it to depend on the factors present in any given situation. We are going to be accused time to time of hypocrisy and incontinency, but foreign policy is a very complicate business. Sometimes you put economic interest first; sometimes you put humanitarian interest and sometimes stability. This has been what we have done in number of instances.

How do you see the future of the Iraq? Will ISIS be defeated or not?

I make no prediction. I am not in prediction business.

President Lauds Iranian Athletes’ Performance in Olympic Games

Rouhani

In a message on Friday, President Rouhani said he could not wait for the competitions to end to praise the Iranian athletes for their glorious presence.

He also hailed Kimia Alizadeh for displaying the Iranian and Islamic culture to the world and proving the Iranian women’s courage and competence.

The president further applauded super heavyweight weightlifter Behdad Salimi for winning the hearts of Iranian people and proving to be a real hero.

Salimi set the world record for the snatch with 216 kg, but his lift in the clean and jerk was deemed to be invalid by the jury panel despite getting three straight white lights from the judges.

The Iranian athletes have so far won three gold and four bronze medals in the games.

Still, freestyle wrestlers, a taekwondo player and a marathon runner from Iran are going to compete in the Olympic Games.
