Female Athlete in Ihram Clothing, Flag-Bearer of Iran’s Paralympics Team

Iran’s Paralympics team, which is named after the victims of the deadly Mina stampede, attended the opening ceremony, as reported by Fars and translated by IFP.

It was in this festive spirit that Iran’s 111 athletes made their debut, led by Kordestani in the white Ihram clothing.

Each delegation, including independent Paralympic athletes, marched out with a puzzle piece, one side representing the country and the other with images of participating Paralympic athletes. As nations entered the stadium and the 1,160 puzzle pieces were assembled, they took the shape of a human heart.

With a heart beating in the centre of the stadium, one was reminded of the core concept of the ceremony: “The heart knows no limits. Everybody has a heart.”

President of the Organizing Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Carlos Arthur Nuzman and International Paralympic Committee President Sir Philip Craven delivered speeches before acting President of the Republic of Brazil Michel Temer declared the Games open, Tasnim repored.

The ceremony concluded with the lighting of the Paralympic cauldron by Brazilian Paralympic swimmer Clodoaldo Silva. A wheelchair user, Silva faced a flight of stairs between himself and the cauldron. The stairs transformed into ramps, allowing Silva to light the flame and prove – in a fitting message preceding 11 days of competition – that anything is possible.

Iran, France Can Help End Region’s Wars: Velayati

velayati

Ali Akbar Velayati, who advises Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs, made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with President of France’s National Assembly Claude Bartolone.

The French official arrived in Tehran on Monday at the head of a parliamentary delegation and is to stay in the Iranian capital until September 9.

“France has a longstanding record in Lebanon and Syria. Iran, too, enjoys good influence in these regions. They [Iran and France], therefore, can end these destructive wars through cooperation with each other,” Velayati stated.

France should follow its “independent policies” in the region, he said, adding, “We are prepared to help them in this regard, but, of course, based on respect for other countries’ territorial integrity.”

“At the present time, both countries are faced with terrorism and both are against this phenomenon. Should these bilateral meetings continue, the two sides’ interpretations of terrorism would further converge,” Velayati noted.

The Iranian official hailed the “longstanding and deep-rooted” relations between the two sides, saying, “This relationship may have gone through vicissitudes, but there have been no bad or worrying memories between the two countries.”

Bartolone, for his part, expressed delight at “direct good and straightforward” exchanges he has had during his meetings so far with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, and other Iranian officials.

He also hailed Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, saying, “The agreement changed Iran’s relationship with the international community.”

The French official further laid emphasis on the need for international agreements to address such important international issues as terrorism, climate change, money laundering, and corruption.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bartolone had met with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

The Iranian official noted during the meeting that some Western parties are after deepening and perpetuation of crises in the Middle East, warning, “Any talk about changing countries’ political map and geographical frontiers will intensify conflicts and tensions,” he warned.

Prolongation of the crisis in Syria harms both the region and Europe, Shamkhani said, and cautioned, “France, as a country damaged by terrorism, should do more to block transfer of military, intelligence, and financial assistance to terrorists.”

He said those areas in the war-stricken Arab country, which are controlled by Daesh and al-Qaeda, are in urgent need of aid, adding that  sanctions imposed on the Syrian government, which bar aid delivery to these areas, flagrantly contradict humanitarian approaches.

Iran Home to 19 UNESCO-Registered Sites

unesco-registered

Iranian plateau is replete with cultural heritage and historical monuments. These architectural remnants date back somewhere between an average 2000 years.

From the “Jiroft civilization” south of Iran, to the “Shahr-e Sukhteh” or the “Burnt City”, in the south east of the country,; to the “Choghazanbil” Zigurat, one of the rare few ziggurats or Step Pyramids, outside of Mesopotamian heartlands, all the way down to the magnificent Achaemenid palaces of Persepolis and regal tombs in Pasargade, near Shiraz, are all but a few examples of what the land of Persia has to offer, when it comes to ancient history.

Overall some 19 major archaeological sites in Iran have been globally registered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as World Heritage sites. At the moment, Iran stands 11th in the number of registered world heritage sites.

unesco-registered-1Persepolis, also known as Takht-e-Jamshid, was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Persepolis is situated 60 km northeast of the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, Iran.

unesco-registered-2The Arg-e Bam was the largest adobe building in the world, located in Bam, a city in Kerman Province of southeastern Iran.

unesco-registered-3Naqsh-e Jahan Square, known as Imam Square, formerly known as Shah Square, is a square situated at the center of Isfahan city, Iran. Constructed between 1598 and 1629, it is now an important historical site.

unesco-registered-4The Tomb of Hafez, renowned 14th-century Persian poet, and its associated memorial hall, the Hafezieh, are two memorial structures erected in the northern edge of Shiraz, Iran.

unesco-registered-5The Mausoleum of Avicenna is a complex located at Avicenna Square, Hamadan, western Iran. Dedicated to the Iranian polymath Avicenna, the complex includes a library, a small museum, and a spindle-shaped tower inspired by the Ziyarid-era Kavus Tower.

Iran’s Historical Sites and Tourism Industry

Archaeologists estimate that modern Iran is home to over a million historical sites, places and zones. During the past centuries, over 150,000 of such sites have been located in different parts of the country.

Discoveries are under way for finding the rest of the historical sites and relics across the country. Since 1930, the year the first Ancient Monuments Protection Act was ratified in Iran, 32,000 historical sites have been registered in the country.

At the moment, Iran generates nearly USD 8 billion from tourism or its related sectors, which comparatively viewed, puts it at the 36th position worldwide. Of course, there are several reasons to this shortcoming: From the negativity of anti-Iran propaganda churned out by mainstream Western media on a daily basis to the under-development of Iran’s inland transportation system and hospitality industry, for which a decade of tough nuclear sanctions plus many more years of a general blockade can be partly blamed.

Right now, nearly 6% of Iran’s GDP comes from the tourism sector and all the activities and procedures.

Nearly 30% of the amount comes from inbound tourism and the rest concerns visits by Iranians to various parts of the country.

Spokesman Condemns PGCC Chief’s Anti-Iran Remarks

Bahram Ghasemi

Qassemi said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran reminds Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, the (P)GCC chief, about this issue that last year’s deadly Mina crush showed “incompetency” and “inability” of Saudi rulers to run the huge religious event.

Earlier, Zayani had praised Saudi Arabia’s handling of the Hajj rituals and accused Iran of trying to “politicize” Hajj rituals.

His allegations came after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on September 5 strongly criticized “murderous” Saudi rulers over the Mina crush, which claimed the lives of over 7,000 pilgrims, including 465 Iranians.

Qassemi further said by playing a blame game over the tragic incident, Saudi Arabia cannot shirk its responsibility and whitewash its inefficiency in handling the Hajj rituals.

Iran’s Black Friday: Massacre of Thousands in 1978

17 shahrivar

As protest against the Shah’s rule continued during the spring and summer of 1978, the Iranian government declared martial law. On 8 September, thousands gathered in Tehran’s Jaleh Square for a religious demonstration, despite the fact that the government had declared martial law the day before.

The soldiers ordered the crowd to disperse, but the order was ignored. Initially, it was thought that either because of this reason, or because of the fact that the protesters kept pushing towards the military, the military opened fire, killing and wounding dozens of people.

Black Friday is thought to have marked the point of no return for the revolution, and led to the abolition of Iran’s monarchy less than a year later. It is also believed that Black Friday played a crucial role in further radicalizing the protest movement, uniting the opposition to the Shah and mobilized the masses. Western journalists said the Iranian army massacred thousands of protesters. The clerical leadership also announced that “thousands have been massacred by Zionist troops.”

The events triggered protests that continued for another four months. A general strike in October shut down the petroleum industry that was essential to the administration’s survival, “sealing the Shah’s fate”. Continuation of protests ultimately led to Shah leaving from Iran in January 1979, clearing the way for the Iranian Revolution, led by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Anti-Saudi Outrage in Streets of Iraqi Capital

billboards -Al Saud

On the occasion of Hajj rituals, and on the first anniversary of a deadly stampede in Mina, Ayatollah Khamenei issued a message and used a Quranic term to describe the ruling Saudi family, which are said to be main culprits behind the death of thousands, including 464 Iranians.

billboards -Al Saud

The term used by the Leader is the ‘evil progeny,’ rendered in different translations of Quranic verses as ‘accursed tree.” It has been widely interpreted by both Shiites and Sunnis to be referring to the Umayyad family, who was notorious in their breaking the sacrosanct rules of Islam and are believed to have created a deviation from the correct Islamic practice, ABNA reported.

Now, modern parallel of Evil Progeny drawn in message of the Leader to Al Saud dynasty represents the same deviation in world of Islam which has sowed discord and caused sedition among Muslims by its acts and words.

Shortly after the Leader’s remarks, streets of Baghdad were filled with anti-Saudi billboards, where the Al Saud regime is called ‘Shajarah al-Mal’ounah’ or the Evil Progeny.

Here are Al Alam News’ photos of these hoardings:

Iran Unveils 7m-Year-Old Fossils Excavated in Lorestan

fossils

According to a report by IRNA, as translated by IFP, the fossils were excavated in Lorestan Province during a road construction project in 2013.

A couple of years later, archeologists found that the region, Noorabad, is full of fossils dating back to millions of years ago.

Director-General of the DoE’s Natural History and Genetic Reserves Museum, Asghar Mobaraki, says the fossils belong to vertebrates like horses, carnivores, mammals, giraffes, and generally terrestrial mammals.

According to Mobaraki, the 7m-year-old fossils are surprisingly similar to the ones found in Maragheh, in Alborz Heights, in spite of the long distance between the two spots.

37 species from 15 families, mainly mammals, machairodontinae tigers, and giraffes, have been identified in different sites so far, he noted.

Fossils of whale in Chabahar [southeastern Iran] and that of sea cow in Khuzestan [western Iran] have also been spotted, and we are trying to excavate and transfer them this year and next year, Mobaraki went on to say.

Ayatollah Khamenei Blasts Global Silence over 2015 Hajj Tragedy

Leader

“Such silence is a scourge plaguing Muslim nations. This is a catastrophe for the Islamic world,” said Ayatollah Khamenei in a Wednesday meeting with the families of the Iranian pilgrims who lost their lives in a human crush during last year’s Hajj rituals near Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The Leader further stated that Saudi rulers were so “shameless” that they even refused to offer an apology to the Muslim countries that lost their nationals in the tragedy, Press TV reported.

“Even if no deliberation was involved, all the mismanagement and incompetence by a government and political system amount to a crime,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei also said the Saudi failure to host Hajj pilgrims proved the kingdom does not merit the custodianship of Islam’s Two Holy Mosques, adding that this is a “reality that should be propagated and well understood in the Muslim world.”

Not only governments, but even scholars, political activists and the Muslim world’s elite remained tight-lipped on the martyrdom of thousands of pilgrims, said Ayatollah Khamenei, adding that not showing sensitivity vis-à-vis the issues such as the great and heart-breaking catastrophe in Mina is a “real scourge” in the Islamic world.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the dead silence of human rights organizations in the face of Saudi shortcomings in running Hajj pilgrimage blew the lid off the “fake identity of those claiming to advocate human rights in the world.”

The Leader further urged those who have pinned their hopes on such international rights institutions to learn a lesson from “this bitter reality.”

At least 465 Iranian pilgrims lost their lives during the stampede, which occurred after two large masses of pilgrims converged at a crossroads in Mina near Mecca during Hajj rituals on September 24, 2015

Riyadh has refused to update the death toll of 770 it released days after the incident.

However, Iran, which had the greatest number of deaths among foreign nationals, has put the death toll at about 4,700.

Just days before the Mina tragedy, a massive construction crane collapsed onto the Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing more than 100 people, including a number of Iranians, and leaving over 200 others wounded.

In a message to Hajj pilgrims on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei said Saudi rulers were to blame for the deaths of hundreds of pilgrims in both incidents during last year’s rituals.

“However, instead of offering apology and expressing regret and prosecuting those directly behind this horrible incident, the Saudi rulers even refused to set up an international Islamic fact-finding mission in ultimate shamelessness and impudence,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated.

Iran has cancelled the participation of its pilgrims in this year’s Hajj rituals because of Saudi Arabia’s refusal to guarantee the safety of pilgrims.
