Iran Stands against Spread of Instability in Mideast: Defense Minister

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan
Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan

“Security and stability in the region are currently considered as important issues for the Islamic Republic of Iran and we (Iran) will definitely stand against the spread of instability in the region or those forces and elements that are promoters of such an unstable and insecure trend,” Dehqan told IRNA on Monday.

He added that Iran’s cooperation with Russia and Syria concerns the “goals and strategies which we have in the region and across the world.”

Such issues relate to Iran’s objectives and national interests, he emphasized.

Dehqan once again reaffirmed Iran’s support for regional countries “until security is restored to the region and terrorist and Takfiri groups are uprooted.”

Iran and Russia are Syria’s main allies and have been assisting the government in Damascus in its fight against foreign-backed terrorist groups, including the Daesh Takfiri terrorists.

On October 28, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian and Syrian counterparts, Sergei Lavrov and Walid Muallem, respectively, held a three-way meeting in Moscow and discussed possible ways to find a political solution to the Syria crisis besides a serious fight against the Takfiri terror groups operating in the Arab country.

Since September 30, 2015, Russia has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh and other terrorist groups in Syria at the Syrian government’s request.

Iran has also been providing advisory assistance to the Syrian government.

Syria has been gripped by a foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

ISIS Leader Escapes from Mosul along with 150 Families Used as Human Shield

ISIS Leader scaped

“Intelligence sources confirmed the escape of terrorist [ISIS leader] Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi with 150 families in order to use them as cover from airstrikes,” the press service said.

The report came as it was reported last week that the ISIS leader is hiding in Mosul.

Earlier, local security sources told Sputnik that ISIS Leader al-Baghdadi escaped an airstrike in the Iraqi campaign to liberate the northern city of Mosul minutes ahead of an attack.

Baghdadi’s movements are known only by his inner circle, with the leader constantly changing location in Iraq and Syria to avoid airstrikes.

Earlier, the Iraqi army announced they have cleared more than two thousand ISIS militants in Mosul since the beginning of the operation.

“Initial reports on the ongoing military operations in Mosul indicate that over 2,000 ISIS militants have been liquidated since the start of the operation, including important leadership figures,” Gen. Najm Jubbouri said.

Jubbouri, in charge of Iraqi military operations in the Nineveh province of which Mosul is the capital, said armed forces were less than four miles away from Mosul’s western front.

Back on October 17, the Iraqi prime minister announced a campaign to reclaim the key ISIS stronghold, with mixed forces of Iraqi army, Kurdish forces and Arab tribesmen advancing from south, east and north.

Leader’s Military Aide Warns Iraqi Kurdistan against Cooperation with Iran’s Enemies

safavi

“In the Iraqi Kurdistan region, [Jalal] Talabani enjoys good relations with Iran but the Barzanis are not so. We are concerned about the Iraqi Kurdistan region’s divergence from Iraq’s central government since they have some agreements with the Zionists,” top military aide to Iran’s Leader Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said, addressing a forum in Tehran on Monday.

“The Barzanis allow the Saudis’ consulate in Northern Iraq to supply weapons to Iranian counter-revolutionary forces and we warn them in this regard. The Barzanis should know that they owe to Iran,” he added.

“The Iraqi Kurds are of Aryan origin, have Iranian roots and are the same as Iranians, but they should know that if they enter this political game, it will not be clear if Iran will help them anymore,” he warned.

His remarks came as Iran has on different occasions helped the Iraqi Kurdistan region to overcome its problems either during Saddam Hussein’s era or during their anti-terrorism campaign against the ISIS.

In April, Iraqi Kurdistan region’s Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani appreciated the Iranian government and nation for assisting the Kurdish civilians to overcome ISIS threats and other security crises in Iraq.

“Iran has played a very positive role during the ISIS attack on Iraq’s Kurdistan region,” Barzani said in a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Danayeefar in the city of Erbil, as reported by Fars.

He reiterated that Iran has helped Iraq’s Kurdish people in the fight against ISIS Takfiri terrorists.

The Iranian ambassador, for his part, renewed Iran’s continued support for Iraq in the anti-ISIS war.

Iraq Forces Retake Key Town on Mosul Southern Front

iraq

Federal police, army and elite interior ministry forces established full control over Hamam al-Alil, the last town of note on the way to Mosul from the south, AFP reporters said.

It lies on the west bank of the Tigris River, about 15 kilometers (nine miles) southeast of Mosul.

Iraqi forces have already entered Mosul from the east and were moving close to the city limits from the north Monday but have some distance to cover on the southern front.

Life quickly resumed in Hamam al-Alil, an AFP cameraman reported, with some residents re-opening shops and other bathing in the town’s sulfur springs.

Soldiers could be seen helping some displaced civilians with their bags.

The recapture of the town clears the way for Iraqi forces to push further north and move to within striking distance of the southern neighborhoods of Mosul.

Mosul’s southern approach is home to the international airport, a vast military area and a large base that Iraqi forces were forced to flee with ISIS took over the city in June 2014.

The majority of newspapers on Monday covered the upcoming presidential elections in the US, where the GOP candidate Donald Trump’s chance has sharply increased in recent days.

Another top story today was the ongoing battle to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul and the beginning of an operation to liberate the city of Raqqa in Syria, two of the last ISIS strongholds in the Middle East.

The recent suicide attacks in Iraq, in which several Iranian pilgrims were killed and dozens were wounded, also received great coverage.

Next US Administration Bound by JCPOA: Iran

“Washington has certain commitments. We believe whatever government comes to power will have to — even if it does not want to — live up to the commitments made by the previous government,” said Bahram Qassemi, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, during his weekly press conference on Monday.

Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, namely the US, Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany, signed the nuclear deal, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in July 2015. The agreement went into effect on January 16, resolving a long-running dispute over the Iranian nuclear program.

Ever since the deal was struck, its opponents in the US Congress have been threatening that a future US administration opposed to the agreement would scrap it.

The US will be holding a presidential election on Tuesday, and the administration of US President Barack Obama, who negotiated the deal with Iran, will be ending its tenure.

Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump has threatened he would discard the JCPOA or try to renegotiate its terms if he is elected president.

Such threats came even as the deal has been endorsed by a United Nations Security Council resolution, which effectively turned it into international law.

The implementation of the accord currently faces certain problems as some European banks balk at the resumption of transactions with Iran lest they prompt US penalties, which were routine occurrences before the deal was struck.

In his Monday remarks, Qassemi said Washington had to help fully remove such obstacles.

“Ultimately, we will consider the US administration liable for not rigorously living up to the commitments. And we ask them to, instead of talking, act more capably and honestly so European enterprises and banks can have economic and technical cooperation with Iran without concern,” Qassemi asserted.

Terrorism Not a Proper Tool to Pursue Personal Goals: Iran President

Rouhani

Rouhani made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Togo Foreign Minister Robert Dussey in Tehran on Monday.

He further said interference in the internal affairs of other countries constitutes poses a threat to global peace and security.

The Iranian chief executive further called for an end to “financial and arms assistance” to terrorist groups operating in the Middle East region, saying international bodies should take “serious and coordinated” action to counter terrorism, which is a “global scourge.”

He further called for the enhancement of cooperation between Tehran and Lome in international organizations to help resolve global challenges.

Dussey, for his part, called for the expansion of cooperation with the Islamic Republic on the fight against terrorism.

Africa belongs to its nations, said Dussey, adding that the people in the continent favor the enhancement of relations with all friendly countries, particularly Iran.

No Immediate Prospect for EU Office in Iran: Spokesman

Iran Blasts Saudi Airstrike on Civilians in Yemen

Speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday, Qassemi suggested that it is unlikely for the European Union’s office to open in Iran in the near future.

He said there is still no “precise and comprehensive view” on opening of such an office in Tehran.

“The issue of an EU office (in Iran) has been mooted by Europeans since a year ago, and we are now studying it. We have no definite time for opening the office,” the spokesman noted.

Qassemi then unveiled plans for a new round of negotiations between Iran and the EU on Wednesday at the level of deputy ministers.

“Negotiations (with the EU) are broad, long, time-consuming and complicated; however, we consider the talks per se as positive in finding common grounds for cooperation,” he noted.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry had previously unveiled plans for “a comprehensive round of negotiations” with the EU, due to be held in Brussels in December.

The talks will reportedly focus on various issues, including human rights.

Arctic Ocean May Be Ice-Free by 2045

arctic ocean

According to a report covered by ISNA, this year’s minimum Arctic sea ice extent tied with 2007 for the second-lowest on record, and its regrowth in fall and winter is proving to be sluggish. From Oct. 1 to 15, ice extent increased by less than one-third of the 1981-2010 average gain for that period; by Oct. 31, Arctic sea ice extent stood at 2.73 million square miles, the lowest extent in the satellite record for that date.

Meanwhile, a new study in the journal Science argues that computer models have been underestimating Arctic sea ice loss, and that the region could become effectively free of summer sea ice by 2045. The study compared annual human-caused greenhouse gas emissions with observations of September Arctic sea ice extent over the period 1968 to 2000. They found that the two elements had a strong linear relationship, to the extent that it was possible for them to calculate that every additional metric ton of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere resulted in the loss of about 33 square feet of Arctic sea ice.

This enabled them to come up with a way of showing how individual actions contribute to changes in the Arctic. For example, they calculated that every seat on a flight from London to San Francisco comes at a cost of about 54 square feet of sea ice. The annual carbon emissions of the average American would be enough to melt about 500 square feet — nearly 10 times as much as the average Indian, for example.

“So far, climate change has often felt like a rather abstract notion. Our results allow us to overcome this perception,” said Stroeve.

Researchers then used their discovery to look at the Arctic’s future, and found that an additional 1,000 gigatons of carbon would be enough to reduce Arctic sea ice cover in September to below 386,000 square miles — which, given that that ice would be tucked into a few pockets such as northern Greenland, would effectively render the Arctic Ocean ice-free. At present rates of CO2 emissions, which are around 35 gigatons per year, that scenario would unfold by around 2045.

They found that the extent of ice loss outpaced that in most computer models, because those models likely underestimate the amount of Arctic warming that is taking place. Measurements of air temperatures above the Arctic Ocean remain limited.

“Models are not perfect,” a researcher said. “And if you can use observations by themselves to forecast when Arctic ice will go away maybe that’s in some ways better.”
