Depths of History in World’s Biggest Urban Caravanserai

Sa’d al-Saltaneh

Built during the Qajar era, the caravanserai of Sa’d al-Saltaneh is one of Iran’s best preserved urban caravanserais.

The caravanserai was built by Baqer Sa’d al-Saltaneh with the aim of boosting trade in the city of Qazvin.

This complex enjoys three architectural typologies including passages with small rooms to accommodate caravans, spaces for the entrance of livestock as well as water reservoirs and baths for guests.

The caravanserai is built on a square plan, has 4 iwans facing a courtyard. The interiors are decorated with Muqarnas and Rasmi bandi.

The Hujrehs, or the rooms for the travellers, are situated one meter above the courtyard ground level. The Hashti behind the southern iwan has the largest dome, with 4 semi-domes adjacent to it.

The eastern-western axis of the Hashti is called Dalan-e Qeisariyeh  or “Caesar’s Hall”, and the north-south axis of the Caravanserai’s Hashti is named Dalan-e Ghahremani or “Ghahremani Hall”. The former is connected to the “Bazaar of Vazir” of the city.

There are also two smaller courtyards in the east and west of the Caravanserai.

Here are photos of the caravanserai released by Mehr, Shabestan, and Shakhes news agencies:

Expediency Council

Gholam-Reza Mesbahi Moqaddam, a senior politician and a member of the Expediency Council, announced that the Council, whose chairman Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani recently passed away, can be chaired by President Hassan Rouhani until Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appoints a new chairman.

“In the absence of Expediency Council’s chairman, if the country’s president is attending the session, he will preside over the Council; otherwise, Parliament Speaker [Ali Larijani] or Judiciary Chief [Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani] can chair the sessions,” he noted, according to a Farsi report by Mizan.

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, who had passed away on January 8 after a heart attack, was laid to rest on two days later after a funeral attended by millions of Iranians.

His body was buried in the mausoleum of late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini in southern Tehran.

Turkish Parliament’s Expensive Microphone Goes Missing after Brawl

Turkey

The microphone, worth 15,000 euros, was reported missing from the podium desk that was damaged inside the hall during the fight that erupted while deputies were discussing draft articles introduced for the amendment of the charter.

The desk, which weighs 250 kilograms, was recovered during maintenance work after the fight and reassembled in its place inside the General Assembly on Jan. 12. However, maintenance teams had to put an older microphone on the podium desk as a replacement for the missing microphone.

The missing microphone, which was one of the two microphones on the speech podium desk, is believed to have been used by a brawling deputy as a weapon to hit rival MPs during the brawl, Hurriyet Daily reported.

During the fisticuff, deputies from both the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) were injured and the General Assembly furniture was damaged.

492,000 Kids in Deprived Iranian Province to Be Vaccinated against Polio

Vaccinated

“The program will be carried out in two phases by universities of medical sciences in the province as well as in other subtropical regions,” said Dr. Mehdi Tabatabai, head of the provincial health department and vice chancellor of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences.

The program will be underway until January 19 in the first phase, and February 18-22 in the second phase in the provinces of Khuzestan, Bushehr, Hormozgan, Fars, Kerman, and South Khorasan as well as Sistan and Balouchestan, ISNA reported.

Although polio has been contained in Iran since 2001, the virus can be transmitted from across the borders where not enough people may have been immunized due to impediments such as illiteracy and lack of information.

Iran to Use Its New Airbus in Int’l Flights in 2 Months

Airbus

“Iran Air is planning to fly the plane to domestic destinations for one or two months, before switching to international destinations,” he was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.

The 194-seat single-aisle jetliner landed at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport on Thursday to mark the first jet Iran received as part of the total of 100 planes the country has ordered from the European plane-maker following the lifting of sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program.

US President Extends National Emergency on Iran

obama

Obama informed Congress of his decision in a letter on Friday, saying that the national emergency, which was declared on March 15, 1995, “is to continue in effect beyond March 15, 2017”, Press TV reported.

The National Emergencies Act requires the president to extend a national emergency within 90 days of its anniversary date, before it is automatically terminated.

Obama admitted in his letter that Iran had delivered on its commitments pursuant to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a nuclear deal that was struck between Iran and P5+1 (the US, the UK, France, China and Russia, plus Germany) on July 14, 2015.

Under the landmark deal, which entered into force on January 16 last year, Iran undertook to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions.

“Since Implementation Day, the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] has repeatedly verified, and the Secretary of State [John Kerry] has confirmed, that Iran continues to meet its nuclear commitments pursuant to the JCPOA,” Obama said in his notice.

“However, irrespective of the JCPOA, which continues to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program is and remains exclusively peaceful, certain actions and policies of the government of Iran continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States.”

This is while experts dismiss the American overreaction as sheer propaganda, because Iran has never approached the US territory or encroached on its economy. On the contrary, US military vessels have violated Iran’s territorial waters and continue to test Iranian patience.

In November, Obama extended a separate national emergency against Iran, which was originally declared by former US president, Jimmy Carter, on November 14, 1979. He also extended the state of emergency with respect to Libya, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Cuba and Venezuela.

A state of emergency gives the US president special powers, including the ability to seize property, summon the National Guard and hire and fire military officers at will.

The state of emergency also forms the basis for most US sanctions against other countries.

Kuwait Has Yet to Relay GCC’s Message to Iran

Speaking to ISNA on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi made the comment in response to some reports quoting Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Sulaiman al-Jarallah as saying that his country would relay a message to Iran.

“Iran has not received any official or specific message from Kuwaiti officials in this regard yet,” Qassemi said.

He added that Kuwaiti officials have not yet submitted any specific proposal or date through diplomatic and official channels for conveying the [P]GCC message.

“Immediately upon receiving any proposal, the Islamic Republic of Iran would examine this issue and make a decision about it,” the Iranian spokesperson said.

In a statement on Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday, al-Jarallah said contacts were underway “with the Iranian brothers to set a proper date to deliver that message.”

He, however, stopped short of elaborating on the contents of the message.

Following the 37th annual summit of the [P]GCC, comprising Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain, in the Bahraini capital of Manama in December, al-Jarallah declared that Kuwait had conveyed a message to Iran “expressing the GCC states’ view regarding dialogue” with the Islamic Republic.

Tehran-Islamabad Direct Flight to Be Launched Soon: Envoy

Iran-Pakistan

Pakistan and Iran agreed to boost their cooperation in the aviation industry and transportation by establishing a direct flight route between Tehran and Islamabad, Honardoost said on Friday during a meeting with Pakistani aviation officials, The News reported.

“Iran is a big market and Pakistani goods have a good reputation there. There is a big demand of Pakistani basmati rice in Iran,” he further said.

“There are tremendous opportunities to improve the trade relations between the two countries; sanctions have now been lifted by the world powers and Pakistan can capitalize on lucrative incentives offered by the Iranian government in sectors like energy, pharmaceutical, auto and information technology,” Honardoost added.

Back in March, high-ranking officials from Iran and Pakistan signed six memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, including health, commerce, security and foreign services.

The documents were signed in a ceremony in Islamabad on March 26, attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Iraq Mediating between Iran and Saudi Arabia: FM

Ibrahim al-Jaafari

Speaking to IRIB in an interview published on Saturday, Jaafari said Iraq continues to work toward the restoration of relations between Tehran and Riyadh.

He added that any crisis in the relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia affects Iraq as well and a rapprochement between the two countries would also benefit Iraq.

The top Iraqi diplomat said he has carried oral messages between Iranian and Saudi officials in the past few months and added that his country would make efforts to bring the positions of Tehran and Riyadh closer.

Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia worsened after a deadly human crush occurred during Hajj rituals in Mina, near Mecca in September 2015. Days into the incident, Saudi Arabia published a death toll of 770 but refused to update it despite gradually surging fatality figures from individual countries whose nationals had been among the victims of the crush.

Iran said about 4,700 people, including over 465 of its nationals, lost their lives in the incident.

Earlier that same month, a massive construction crane had collapsed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque, killing more than 100 pilgrims, including 11 Iranians, and injuring over 200 others, among them 32 Iranian nationals.

Mutual ties deteriorated further when Riyadh executed prominent Saudi Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in January 2016. Saudi Arabia unilaterally severed its diplomatic ties with Iran after protests in front of its diplomatic premises in the cities of Tehran and Mashhad against Nimr’s execution.

Media Hype against Iran-Iraq Ties

The Iraqi foreign minister also dismissed the propaganda spread by certain spiteful media outlets targeting the cordial relations between Tehran and Baghdad.

Such media hype is aimed at portraying the friendly Iran-Iraq ties as a ‘Shia threat’ in the region, Jaafari said, adding that cultural and religious commonalities between the two countries as well as their common policies on regional issues have strengthened mutual relations.

The Islamic Republic was the first country that recognized the Iraqi government and supported it in its fight against Daesh terrorists, he said.

He emphasized that Iran is providing advisory military assistance to Iraq against the terrorists at the official request of the Iraqi government.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been in chaos ever since Daesh started its campaign of terror in early June 2014.

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) says a total of 386 Iraqis were killed and another 1,066 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in December 2016.
