Iranian Family Launches Nationwide Campaign to Protect Asiatic Cheetah

cheetah

Members of an Iranian family are using their car, marked with “Asiatic [or Iranian] Cheetah” slogans, to promote the culture of environmental protection and prevent the extinction of wildlife species, this animal in particular, by travelling to different Iranian provinces in the form of a caravan.

According to a Farsi report by Mehr, the head of this caravan is Bahman Najafi, an Iranian ranger retired from the Environment Department who personally pays the costs of this journey to different Iranian regions alongside his family.

Their trip began seven years ago to inform people about the harms that put the lives of cheetahs in danger.

“We started our journey from Tabas, eastern Iran, and will go on toward the cities in southern Iranian, the desert habitat of cheetah,” he said.

This caravan has arrived in Shiraz, Fars province, in southern Iran after travelling across 16 provinces.

The Asiatic cheetah or Iranian cheetah is a critically endangered species now on the verge of extinction and an important part of Iran’s natural and cultural heritage.

One of the significant aims of the preservation efforts is to raise public awareness not to harm the world’s most graceful wild cats.

In the early 20th century, the population of the Asiatic cheetah was distributed across many countries, including India, Pakistan, the Middle East and Russia.

Currently, the only existing population lives in the northeastern Iranian scrublands, where only 50 to 70 individuals are estimated to survive in the wild.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Iran is directing a project in conjunction with Iran’s Department of the Environment dubbed the Conservation of Asiatic Cheetah Project (CACP).

Iranian President Unveils Two New Homegrown Satellites

The Exhibition of Aerospace Achievements was held  in Tehran on Wednesday to mark the ninth National Space Technology Day.

Also present at the event were Minister of Science, Research, and Technology Mohammad Farhadi and Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan.

During the ceremony, the domestically-designed Nahid (Venus) 1 telecommunications satellite, and student-manufactured Cube satellite were unveiled.

Nahid 1 has been manufactured at Iran’s Space Research Center. Though its production, the country has sought to hone its capabilities in building geosynchronous satellites. It is designed to provide Ku-band telecommunication services, carrying out imaging and calculating the speed at which its two solar panels unfold in space after launch.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Iranian president called for efforts to promote domestic capabilities in the field of space technology with the help of relevant international experience.

“It is wrong for us to either be exclusively reliant on buying [technology] from abroad or totally turn our backs on the world’s experience,” said President Rouhani, adding that the country needs to benefit from domestic capabilities as well as its own scientists concomitantly with international experience.

Why Trump’s Travel Ban Is Pointless

trump

Here is the full text of his article in Malaysia’s The Star Online, which was covered in Farsi by IRNA:

Let’s examine why [Trump’s travel ban is pointless], shall we?

The biggest terrorist attack on American soil is the Sept 11, 2001 airplane hijacks and crashes.

Who were the people involved? They were Saudis. Strangely enough, Saudi Arabia is not on the list above. Which makes one wonder whether Trump is really serious about stopping terrorists (who are exclusively Muslim, naturally) from entering his wonderful country or he is just making a great big show-and-tell to make his voters happy.

Furthermore, since 2001, according to the New America Foundation, 82% of terrorist attacks in America have come from American citizens and Permanent Residents. And according to the Cato Institute, an American is over 250 times more likely to be killed by ordinary homicide than a terrorist attack.

So by taking aim at the peoples of these seven countries, what we have, therefore, is a policy that is utterly misguided and pointless.

Well, maybe I am being overly harsh. There is a point to this policy. It makes racist, misinformed bigots happy. That is surely a good thing for Trump. Also, it is great news for the Islamic State and their ilk because the “Great Satan USA” now has a leader who is an Islamophobe and proud of it. Trump is the ideal poster boy for extremist recruiters.

And what can the world do about it?

In Britain, the answer is to be as subservient as possible. Theresa May, the British PM, was the first world leader to go rushing to pant at Trump’s door and she was quite happy to excuse his vile policies as something within his right to do. The United States has its policies and we have ours, is roughly what she said when asked. How convenient.

However, the people of Britain have not been so pliant. Nearly 1.5 million have signed a petition demanding that the planned state visit of Trump be cancelled. It takes only 100,000 signatures to force a debate in the House of Commons. Within hours, this number was exceeded many times over.

Now, will the government cancel the visit? Of course not, the Brits have no friends in Europe any more so they have to play ball with the Americans. It would be nice for the government to admit that this is the case.

Instead, we have seen the usual political squirming along the lines that Trump was democratically elected and thus we have to respect the will of the American people. How wonderfully hypocritical.

When America chose to cut all aid to Palestine because the people of that country voted Hamas into power, it was perfectly acceptable for them to disregard the democratic will of the Palestinian people.

Of course, their reasoning was that Hamas was a “terrorist” organisation.

If it is acceptable to not respect the democratic choice of a country because you don’t like their elected leaders, why then is it not acceptable for a country to minimise relations with a country that voted a misanthropic, uninformed bigot into power?

If you don’t have the guts to do so, just admit it. Please don’t hide behind the false high horse of respecting democracy, as it seems that the powerful are more than happy to disrespect democracy when it suits them.

Iran’s Leader Pays Tribute to Imam Khomeini and Martyrs

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

On the occasion of the of the 38th anniversary of the victory of Islamic Revolution in 1979, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made a visit to mausoleum of late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini in southern Tehran early in the morning.

Ayatollah Khamenei also paid tribute to the Iranian pilgrims killed in Mina crush, the deadly incident in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which killed hundreds of Iranians, among other nationals, during the Hajj pilgrimage in 2015.

During the visit, the Leader paid tribute to Imam Khomeini, the honourable martyrs of the Revolution as well as martyred firefighters who recently sacrificed their lives during Plasco Incident in Tehran, Mehr reported.

Here are IRNA’s photos of the visit:

School Built in Iran Thanks to Waste Paper Sale

Mehrzad Hamidi, a senior official at the Education Ministry, referred to a directive jointly communicated by Iran’s Education and Energy Ministries and Environment Department to 106,000 schools at the beginning of current scholar year.

“The directive included the reduction of paper use, and waste sorting, especially the paper waste, in the schools.”

“Fortunately we achieved some considerable results such as building the first Iranian school with the funds provided by the sale of students’ old books and waste paper in Neyshabur, eastern Iran.”

“The main rubrics of this Ministry in environmental protection include promoting the environmental morality, improving the students’ knowledge and skills in environment, and considering the green economy with regards to all circumstances,” he said, according to a Farsi report by IMNA.

He also announced that the Education Ministry was ranked first in the recent Iranian National Environment Awards.

“Several measure have been taken by our Ministry to inform the students and teachers about the environment, and to promote the culture of environmental protection.”

Other measures include appropriating 120 pages of textbooks in different grades to environmental information, running related courses for teachers, scouts and students, preparing two educational units about environment in Farhangian University, and implementing the environmental programs of the Iranian students’ organization.

Students get to know rangers

“‘An Hour with a Ranger’ was an important joint project implemented by Education Ministry and Environment Department in 1700 schools near the national parks and environmental protected areas,” announced Kioumars Kalantari, Head of Education in Iranian Environment Department.

He referred to the murder of three rangers in 2016 when they were confronting the hunters in protected areas.

“Projects like this are to inform the local children about a ranger’s profession and tasks, and can contribute to an interaction between the local community and environment which lessens such conflicts.”

“Another joint program is to develop a ‘Human and Environment’ textbook for the 11th grade in seven chapters with a problem-based approach,” he added.

“This is a very important move, as it is the first time the Iranian Education Ministry edits a textbook in cooperation with another department.”

He went on to say that “Human and Environment” will be taught in schools twice a week from September 2017.

He also referred to measures such as adding environmental insertions in work and knowledge field textbooks, setting standards for the five proposed environmental fields, translating environmental guidelines for the trainers, and establishing a strategic national working group for the imparted document to 106,000 schools about green management as other joint projects of the two departments.

President Rouhani Calls for Global Cooperation against Terror

In a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault in Tehran on Tuesday, Rouhani said strengthening cooperation among all countries across the world in the fight against terrorism is very important.

He noted that the Islamic Republic as a victim of terrorism, is at the forefront of the battle against this vicious phenomenon in the region, adding that to that end France can also play a key role and help promote stability in the region.

Pointing to the Syrian government and nation struggle against terrorist groups, the Iranian president said, “The Syrian crisis has no military solution and must only be settled through political approaches.”

He added that Syria needed a political change, which should be carried out only by its own people.

Also at the meeting, Rouhani pointed to the nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), between Iran and six world powers, and urged all signatories to the landmark agreement should completely fulfill their commitments under the deal.

He urged all countries to protect and promote the deal “because any damage to it can convey this dangerous message to the world that diplomacy is not capable of solving problems.”

The French foreign minister, for his part, stressed the importance of looking after the JCPOA as an international accomplishment.

Ayrault said the European Union is pursuing a single strategy to safeguarding the JCPOA achievements.

He hailed Iran’s positive role on regional and international issues and expressed hope that the country would continue such a policy.

France’s Support for MKO Terrorists Sends Unfriendly Message to Iran

shamkhani-Jean-Marc Ayrault

In a meeting with visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani slammed the fact that the terrorist Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) is operating freely in France and recalled the crimes committed by the MKO such as the killing of Iranian top officials and ordinary citizens.

“The Iranian nation has not forgotten the MKO’s criminal behaviour and their direct cooperation with former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein during the [Iraqi] imposed war [on Iran in the 1980s],” said Shamkhani.

He noted any kind of support for the terrorist group will send unfriendly messages to Iran.

He touched upon the acts of terror committed in France which left its innocent citizens dead, and reiterated the need to seriously deal with terrorism.

“Adoption of double standards in dealing with terrorism as well as dividing terrorism into good and bad will only result in further violence and crimes,” the senior Iranian official said.

He said the international community needs to take practical steps through a collective and genuine effort to cut off financial, military and other forms of assistance to terrorist groups across the globe.

shamkhani-Jean-Marc Ayrault

Shamkhani also welcomed the promotion of bilateral political and economic relations as well as the need to expedite efforts to remove remaining obstacles in the banking sector.

“The sustenance of the JCPOA [nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers] is subject to both sides’ remaining committed to their obligations,” said Shamkhani.

“Deviating from this trend [commitment to the deal] under any pretext and with whatever approach will result in reciprocal reaction,” he added.

Iran-Russia- Turkey Initiative Leads to Most Successful Syria Truce

Elsewhere in his remarks, Shamkhani expounded on the framework of cooperation between Iran, Russia and Turkey to develop and implement political initiatives to settle the Syria crisis, and added the initiatives led to the establishment of the most successful ceasefire in Syria over the past six years and direct talks between the government and militants.

He noted a political solution and dialogue hold the key to settling regional crises and should supersede the military option and use of terror as a tool to subdue political will.

He said the recent political achievements in Syria are the result of the activities of the legal Syrian government.

“If some parties [to the conflict] still seek to remove the legal Syrian president from power and form a political vacuum in the country, or want to work towards disintegrating Syria by raising such issues as the establishment of buffer zones, that will instead contribute to promotion of terrorism and perpetuation of the crisis in the region.”

Restoring Palestinians’ Rights Only Way to Bring Back Peace

Shamkhani praised Paris for holding a conference to express opposition to the Israeli settlement construction and call for an end to the Gaza blockade. It needs international pressure to restrict and counter Israeli occupation and crimes, he said. He went on to say that Europe should contribute to this process by sending clear and strong messages.

“The experience gained over the past decades has sent the message to the international community that the restoration of the Palestinians’ rights is the only way to restore tranquility to the occupied Palestinian territories.

Europe Helping Riyadh Kill Innocent People of Yemen

He expressed grave concern over Saudi Arabia’s stepped up military action against Yemen and the killing of innocent Yemeni people, and hit out at European countries as well the permanent members of the UN Security Council for their silence and inaction in the face of such crimes.

“By continuing to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia and remaining indifferent toward the killing of innocent people and destruction of Yemen’s infrastructure, certain European countries are in fact aiding and abetting Riyadh’s crimes in this poor country (Yemen) and have subjected themselves to judgment by the international court of public opinion,” he said.

shamkhani-Jean-Marc Ayrault

For his part, the visiting French foreign minister expressed delight over his trip to Iran and holding talks with senior Tehran officials.

Ayrault added, “The prospects of political and economic relations between Iran and France are very bright in the post-JCPOA era.”

He referred to regular and mutual visits to Iran and France by economic officials of both countries over the past year, and described as very good the efforts underway to lay the groundwork for further enhancement of bilateral economic relations.

“Iran has taken delivery of the first Airbus plane it had ordered, which is a clear sign that the way is paved for boosting economic cooperation between the two countries.”

The top French diplomat thanked Iran for making good on its commitments under the JCPOA without delay, and said the road ahead will definitely serve the interests of both countries on political and economic fronts.

Missile Test Is Iran’s Absolute Defensive Right

“I emphasize the Islamic Republic of Iran’s principled stance that conducting any ballistic missile test by the Islamic Republic of Iran is in full compliance with its absolute rights and international obligations,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday.

He underlined the “defensive nature” of Iran’s missile programs and said none of the country’s ballistic missiles had been designed to carry a nuclear warhead and they were, therefore, not banned under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, Press TV reported.

Resolution 2231 was adopted on July 20, 2015 to endorse a landmark nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Under the resolution, Iran is “called upon” not to undertake any activity related to missiles “designed to be capable of” delivering nuclear weapons. Iran says it is not involved in any such missile work and has no such warheads.

The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that Iran would never seek permission from anyone to defend itself.

He said the country’s ballistic missile tests are not inconsistent with the UNSC resolution and condemned politically-motivated comments made by certain countries over the issue.

Some individuals in the United States are creating hype with political objectives and seek pretexts to decrease the international pressure on them following the US government’s thoughtless decision to prevent the entry of people holding legal visas or shun the responsibility for fully complying with Washington’s obligations under the 2015 nuclear agreement, Qassemi said.

However, he added, the Security Council Resolution 2231 does not grant anyone such excuses.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday cautioned the United States against politicizing the Islamic Republic’s legitimate efforts at reinforcing its defense capabilities.

“We hope that the issue of Iran’s defense program… does not turn into a pretext for political games,” he said at a joint press conference with his visiting French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault in Tehran.

Zarif said all the parties to the JCPOA, including both France and the previous US administration, have attested that Iran’s missile tests have nothing to do with the nuclear agreement.

Nabila Massrali, an EU foreign affairs spokeswoman, on Tuesday warned Iran over its ballistic missile tests.

She added, however, that since Iran’s ballistic missile program was not included in the JCPOA, “the tests are not a violation.”

France Showing Strong Support for Enhancing Its Ties with Iran

zarif

Ayrault told a meeting of Iranian-French business leaders that last year’s nuclear deal with Iran had opened a new era that had already led to a major expansion of relations between the two countries.

He said that protecting the Iran nuclear deal – the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – was “extremely important” for Paris.

The French top diplomat emphasized that it was the JCPOA that opened the way for France to move ahead with the expansion of its relations with Iran in all areas.

Ayrault said the expansion of France’s economic ties with Iran would benefit both countries, adding that Paris had never been so eager to develop relations with any other country.

He further named the deals that Iran had already signed with companies Total, Renault and Airbus as examples of French determination to promote economic ties with the Islamic Republic.

Nevertheless, Ayrault emphasized that the current banking hurdles remaining from the years that Iran was under sanctions still needed to be removed to further facilitate trade between the two countries.

The remarks by the French foreign minister came on the heels of a controversial decision by President Trump to ban Iranian nationals from entering the US.

Apart from Iran, citizens of Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen have also been banned from entering the US for a period of 90 days.

The move drew an immediate reaction from Iran with the country’s Foreign Ministry pledging a response in kind.

Ayrault had criticized Trump’s move upon arrival in Tehran on Monday.  He had called for avoiding any move that he said would promote discrimination against nationals of other countries – what he suggested Trump’s order would lead to.

The French foreign minister – who is heading a delegation of 100 businesspeople in his Tehran trip – had further announced that Paris would double visas for Iranians in 2017 in what was seen as a response to the US ban against Iranians.

Many Iranians living in the US are already expressing shock at Trump’s decision. The worst affected appears to be a community of about half a million Iranians living in Los Angeles.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told the same meeting of Iranian-French business leaders in which Ayrault was speaking that Tehran was determined to promote economic relations with the European countries, specifically France.

Zarif said the volume of Iran’s trade with France tripled after the implementation of the JCPOA and the subsequent removal of sanctions against Iran.  Nonetheless, he said there was still room for both countries to further increase their level of mutual trade.

He further said Iran counted on France – as a party to the JCPOA – to help remove the banking obstacles that were blocking the full exploitation of trade opportunities with Iran.
