Those behind Plasco Building Fire to Be Punished: Minister

Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli

Talking to reporters, Rahmani Fazli said once all relevant institutes release their final reports on the fire in Plasco and its collapse, the culprits will be punished.

The incident is under investigation and all evidence indicate that electrical fault caused it, he added, as reported by IRNA.

The high-rise building caught fire earlier in Thursday, January 19, and came down as it was turned into rubble and the firefighters attempting to put out fire were all trapped inside. The operation to unearth their bodies are still underway.

Syrian People in Aleppo Ride First Train after 4 Years

Syrian Transport Minister Ali Hamoud said the resumption of train services between the two stations came after “the victory of the heroes of the Syrian army, returning safety and stability to the whole city.”

The train made its journey between Jibreen Station on the eastern outskirts and Aleppo’s main Baghdad railway station on Wednesday.

The official news agency SANA quoted Hamoud as saying that the line was reopened after less than 20 days of repairs.

He said 40 points of damage “from terrorism” were detected along the line.

The train services between Aleppo and other main cities, however, remain suspended.

The trip was the first since foreign-backed militants overran eastern Aleppo in the summer of 2012, dividing the city into a government-controlled west and the eastern part held by rebels.

Men, women and children were seen peering out the train’s windows as they rode across the eastern districts after government forces purged them of Takfiri militants in December.

During the one-hour round trip, the extent of the damage caused by the conflict left the passengers astonished and prompted them to use their mobile phones to take pictures of the rubble.

The full carriages were decorated with portraits of President Bashar al-Assad.

Even people on the ground in the eastern side gathered by the rail tracks, gazing at the first train they had seen since 2012 and seeing the region coming back to life, Press TV reported.

Aleppo’s liberation is seen as a crushing blow to militants and their foreign supporters, who have been actively working to topple the Damascus government since March 2011.

Moving US Embassy to Jerusalem Is a Declaration of War: Iraq’s al-Sadr

“Transferring the US embassy to al-Quds would be a public and more-explicit-than-ever declaration of war against Islam,” he said in a statement.

In a break with previous administrations, new US President Donald Trump has pledged to recognize al-Quds as the Israeli regime’s capital and relocate the US embassy there from Tel Aviv.

Sadr, a powerful Iraqi cleric called for the “formation of a special division to liberate al-Quds were the decision to be implemented.”

Sadr said the Cairo-based Arab League as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the world’s main pan-Islamic body, should take a decisive stand on the issue or dissolve themselves, AFP reported.

The Najaf-based cleric also called “for the immediate closure of the US embassy in Iraq” should Washington go ahead with its promised embassy transfer in Israel.

The White House Sunday appeared to play down suggestions that a move was imminent, with press secretary Sean Spicer saying: “We are at the very beginning stages of even discussing this subject.”

Spokesman Reject’s British Official’s Baseless Remarks against Iran

Bahram Qassemi

Qassemi on Wednesday hit back at British Minister of State of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Joyce Anne Anelay for her anti-Iran comments at the House of Commons, saying the “incorrect, ill-advised, provocative and interfering remarks” have been once again based upon inauthentic sources.

Iran condemns the “biased and groundless” comments, the spokesman added, saying such stances by senior British officials will be damaging to the enhancement of Tehran-London relations.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always stressed that instrumental, and political… use of human rights in order to exert pressure on independent countries has become an old and useless method in the current era, he added.

The spokesman also rejected the baseless allegations of human rights violation in the trial of a number of Iranian individuals, reiterating that Iran’s Judiciary works independently according to legal grounds.

Qassemi then touched upon Britain’s “dark record” of human rights violation, saying it’s a pity that Britain portrays itself as an advocate of human rights and recommends other nations to respect it.

The spokesman also highlighted a number of blatant cases of human rights violation by the British government, referring to lack of transparency in the trial of terrorism-related suspects, violation of rights of refugees, laborers, women and children, arms sales to Saudi Arabia, high rate of racist crimes in Britain, and its divisive policies towards the Middle East and the Persian Gulf for the purpose of destabilizing the region.

Earlier this month, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei denounced the British government as “the disabled old colonialist” and said it has returned to the Persian Gulf to exploit some regional countries and split up some others.

It came after British Prime Minister Theresa May made anti-Iran remarks in a summit of the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) in Bahrain.

May said at the summit that Britain would contribute to counteracting what she called “aggressive regional actions” from Iran, and unveiled plans for a four-billion-dollar military investment in the region for the next 10 years.

Iran’s Power Serves Regional Stability: President Rouhani

“The power and capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran have always been aimed at safeguarding regional security and stability and supporting [our] neighbours,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Hamad al-Sabah in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Iranian president added that Tehran backs any measures that would promote regional stability and security.

He said that security in the Middle East region would be guaranteed only through dialogue, friendship and cooperation among regional countries.

“Undoubtedly, the development and progress of the region’s countries and nations will benefit the stability and security of all,” Rouhani stated.

The Iranian president also underlined the need for further promotion of Iran-Kuwait ties in different sectors, including political, economic and cultural arenas.

During the meeting, the Kuwaiti foreign minister delivered a message from his country’s Emir to the Iranian president and said the Kuwaiti government and nation had a great respect for Iran and its instrumental role in the region.

Praising Iran’s efforts to contribute to the promotion of relations among regional countries, the top Kuwaiti diplomat said the two sides needed to use their potential and common grounds to boost bilateral ties, Press TV reported.

He also branded Takfiri [radical] terrorism and extremism as harmful to the region, calling for a coordinated campaign by regional countries against the menaces to help restore stability and security to the region.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Kuwaiti foreign minister met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and discussed bilateral ties and matters of mutual interest.

During his meeting with Zarif, the Kuwaiti foreign minister highlighted Iran’s position in the region and the world, underlining the need for mutual cooperation in the face of common threats.

Pointing to the long-time relations between his country and Iran, the top Kuwaiti diplomat said Iran and the regional countries enjoyed numerous historical and cultural common points, adding that the two sides should hold talks with a view to future.

Sheikh Sabah, who is also a Kuwaiti deputy prime minister, called for cooperation in the face of common threats to serve the interests of all regional countries.

It is essential that differences be set aside and misunderstandings be removed among the regional countries in a peaceful environment and through dialogue, IRNA quoted the Kuwaiti official as saying.

For his part, Zarif said all regional countries needed to look to future while keeping a watchful eye on common enemies and threats.

He said that the expansion of ties with neighbours was a top priority for Iran and lauded the Kuwaiti emir for his role in promoting good neighbourly relations among the countries in the region.

Sheikh Sabah arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for a one-day visit to deliver a message by his country’s Emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, to the Iranian president on relations between Iran and the Persian Gulf Arab countries.

Plasco Indecent Results from People’s Irrational, Irresponsible Votes

Plasco

Iran’s oldest high-rise in downtown Tehran collapsed on Thursday (January 19) morning following a huge fire in the building, leaving many firefighters buried under the rubble, all of them are presumed dead.

The tragedy sparked harsh criticisms against the presence of artists and athletes, including veteran Iranian freestyle wrestlers Abbas Jadidi and Alireza Dabir, weightlifter Hossein Rezazadeh and taekwondoka Hadi Saei, in Tehran’s City Council.

Among the harshest criticisms levelled at the incompetency of City councillors is an article by Asr-e Iran news website, which questions people on voting for such figures, inviting them to take greater care in future elections:

While the Municipality of Tehran is responsible for managing urban affairs, Tehran City Council is in charge of overseeing the operations, performances and decisions of this urban administrative division, on behalf of the people.

The Plasco Building’s collapse was an outcome of a collection of shortcomings and drawbacks in all sections of the Iranian society and government. Even a closer look at the incident fails to determine who is to fully blame for the sad event.

Nevertheless, above all others, Tehran Municipality is apparently more involved in the incident and its consequences, due to its direct organizational role in staving off such disasters.

As per law, Tehran Municipality should have suspended activities in Plasco high-rise as a high-risk structure.

Do not mistake this piece of writing for a political spin, at a time when dozens of our beloved compatriots are buried under massive piles of iron girder, cement and flame. This is to remind that each one of us who has cast his/her ballot in favour of an inefficient candidate in the previous City Council elections is responsible for this tragedy.

It is highly unlikely that we would hire a gardener, babysitter or a manager [for our company], without first asking questions about their expertise and making sure about their eligibility for the job: Does he know gardening? Is he knowledgeable or capable enough to take care of my baby or company?

Disaster occurs when we appoint the gardener as the manager of the company, expect the management expert to nurse our children, and make the babysitter prune our trees.

This is the disaster that has happened to Tehran’s City Council. We are all to blame for it.

Many of us, whether conservative, reformist or none of them, have voted for inexperienced people who don’t have enough knowledge in urban affairs.

Having a great passion for someone’s voice, appearance or political stance is not a rational reason for selecting incompetent people for a sensitive position.

Other criteria such as he can lift multi-hundred weights, he is a very good wrestler or a master of martial arts, are also non-conducive to a wise choice when selecting an urban affairs expert. Neither can a left kick, nor a right hook knock a single urban problem down. No one has ever won a battle against urban challenges through martial techniques.

Certain knots are only untied by experience and expertise, and not powerful muscles or a flexible body.

The upcoming City Council elections in May would be a golden opportunity to vote for urban management experts, whether they are conservative or reformist; otherwise, we would betray our city as well as its citizens or, perhaps, be among the candidates to burn in future Plasco incidents.

Iran’s political parties are also required to refrain from misleading people and betraying them by including famous names in their lists, whose fame is their only significant feature.

Iran’s FM Zarif Says He’s Proud of Nuclear Deal

zarif-mohammad javad

Addressing the business community in Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Iranian Foreign Minister said, “I believe that the nuclear deal is not facing any serious dangers provided we work to keep it alive,” he said, adding that preserving the deal is not synonymous with “mentioning it every single day”.

“Some think I am ashamed of the nuclear deal–known by its acronym JCPOA–but the truth is that I am very proud of it.”

The top diplomat noted that arguing over the merits and demerits of the accord would be meaningless, because the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is now part of the world reality, Financial Tribune reported.

The country’s top diplomat also referred to the snapback provision–which makes it possible for the US and other parties to instantly bring back sanctions if Iran violates the deal– and said the provision indicated the nuclear agreement had been reached on the basis of mutual distrust.

“On our part, snapback means that we can resume our nuclear programs anytime we want to but that is not the same for the other party because it will take time for them to re-implement the sanctions,” he said.

“Snapback is there so that that all parties abide by the deal.”

Zarif added that the way to use the snapback measure to Iran’s advantage was to increase interactions with the international community because the Islamic Republic of Iran is now an active player on the world’s stage.

Zarif, who was Iran’s chief negotiator in the marathon nuclear talks that led to the signing of the deal in July 2015 between Tehran and the P5+1 (the five UN Security Council permanent members plus Germany), has had a hard time defending the deal in the face of criticism from domestic hardliners who complain Iran made too many concessions and gained little in return.

The private sector, largely welcoming the lifting of restrictions that had made foreign commerce a complicated and risky venture, also bemoaned the slow undoing of sanctions, especially in the banking sector.

Business Normalcy

The board members of TCCIMA appreciated Zarif’s efforts on Tuesday, showering him with praise for saving the country from the brink of economic meltdown but also suggesting that more efforts are needed to capitalize on the benefits of the post-sanctions era.

Clearing the remaining banking hurdles, easing dollar transactions, joining the World Trade Organization and reaching visa waiver agreements were among the points raised by the business community.

Zarif noted that just as the imposition of western-led sanctions on Iran had been gradual, the process of easing them would also come in fits and starts.

“It took the EU six months to prepare its oil embargo on Iran and just as it took the banking system’s corresponding relations to drop from 670 in 2010-11 down to 50 [just before the nuclear pact was clinched], the process of scaling them back [to pre-sanctions levels would need time,” he said.

“And when it comes to the banking sanctions, we should note that when Iran was removed from the global banking scene, the world was reeling from the 2008 financial crisis. Hence our banks were kept away from all the developments and changes that were taking place in the sector.”

He further said some of the remaining hurdles are rooted in measures passed well before the nuclear controversy began.

For instance, sanctions on U-turn transactions, which allowed US banks to process dollar-denominated transactions on Iran’s behalf as long as the payments were initiated offshore by a non-Iranian foreign bank and only passed through the US financial system en route to another non-Iranian foreign bank, were enforced in the 80s and 90s.

Or the Iran Sanctions Act–formerly known as D’Amato Sanctions, which were recently extended by US lawmakers, dates back to 1996 when it was introduced by Senator Alfonse D’Amato.

Stressing that the nuclear agreement succeeded in rolling back the nuclear-related sanctions, the foreign minister noted that the deal’s biggest merit has been its ability to end the negative psychological impression about doing business with Iran.

Zarif asked the business community to not let the many benign achievements of the historic deal to lose momentum in the face of adverse propaganda.

“This will take hard works and to a certain degree, risk-taking,” he said.

Trump Thanks Iranian Photographer for Inauguration Photo with Wrong Date!

Abbas Shirmohamadi photo

According to a report by IFP, Trump in a recent tweet thanked the photographer Abbas Shirmohammadi, an Iranian who left Iran for the US as a teenager 31 years ago.

Having been the official photographer of Hillary Clinton, he has taken special photos of Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and Nelson Mandela.

Shirmohammadi took a panoramic photo of Trump’s inauguration ceremony, and the US President formally thanked him and said he will hang it on the walls of White House.

However, the date written under the inauguration photo shows January 21, which is one day after the inauguration ceremony, and is the day when Women’s March was held across the world, protesting Donald Trump’s anti-woman approaches.
