Rouhani: We’re Sick and Tired of Lies

Hassan Rouhani - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Iranian Presidential candidate Hassan Rouhani has, in a stump speech in the city of Kermanshah, weighed in on a whole range of issues. The following is a summary of his remarks:

– Some are worried about the freedom of the youth. Why don’t you express yourselves to the younger generation? Why don’t you tell them the same things you said in closed-door meetings? You said the youth are not an opportunity, but a threat. [You said that] you want Iran to remain isolated and want Iran’s younger generation to be cut off from the rest of the world. Rouhani stood up to you during these four years, and with your (the people’s) help, I’m ready to stand up to them for another four years.

– We don’t just talk the talk, but we walk the walk. People should know that the country’s defensive capabilities have increased during the tenure of the eleventh administration. We are not against weapons, but you should know that we are against those who want to strike terror into the hearts of the people of Iran and the region. Iran’s power will be used to counter aggression. We will stand against any aggressor and won’t allow your inappropriate behavior to continue.

– The days of violence are numbered. You want to deprive people of freedom, and hence, people stand up to you. We are witnessing the days of progress now. We should do something about the lives of the deprived through action, not words.

– Let me ask you. The day when they used exchange shops to transfer our money, and when our banks were banned from conducting foreign transactions, was the situation better then? Or is it better now that the doors to international interaction have opened? You want to put the Iranian nation under pressure and in isolation. The Iranian nation won’t allow you to turn Iran back to the path that the country was treading eight years ago.

– You ask about inflated salaries. We dealt with those who had not used the public funds fairly. We won’t allowa minority to try to isolate the majority. What percent of the population do you make up? Do you think that you are the custodians of the nation? We will respond to this group of minority on May 19. Rouhani won’t allow aminority to keep talking their loudspeakers in the next four years. We will enforce the Constitution.

– We won’t allow you to divide people because we are together one hundred percent. The eleventh administration was a 100-precent one, and the twelfth administration will be the same.

– You want to send women home. The Iranian nation and the constitution won’t allow you to do this. Today, we’re announcing that we once again want freedom on May 19. We’re sick and tired of their lies and deception, which we’ve seen for years. We have the twelfth presidential election ahead of us. Each person should take eleven people along to the polling stations to make twelve of us voting together.

– We will build Iran through tourism, foreign investment and working towards realizing a resilient economy. Iranian people want restrictions removed. On what basis do you ban the photos of high-profile Iranian figures? Based on which law? Tell us which law! You claimed the Supreme National Security Council had done that [banning former president Khatami’s image]. But I straightforwardly said that it was a lie, a lie. We will make our voices heard through the ballot boxes. On election day, people will cast their ballots for happiness and hope. Don’t let the extremists return. The Iranian nation won’t allow the extremists to make a comeback. Once again Iran, once again Islam and once again hope and moderation.

– In my administration, some Rls.116 [$3.1bn] trillion in funds were allocated to irrigation projects, and, God willing, the water [supplied through those projects] will be enough to irrigate 20 thousand hectares of land. In the future, the figure could rise to 120 thousand hectares.

– God willing, the Kermanshah railway will join the national rail network in a month’s time. Qasr-e-Shirin will become a free zone. The construction of the subway network will start in Kermanshah in the next administration.

All Iranian newspapers today highlighted the warning issued by the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei against those who disrupt the security of Iran’s upcoming elections.

Another top story was the third and final presidential debate, which is going to be live aired on Friday afternoon. Speculations about the approaches presidential candidates will adopt, and the questions they should answer were particularly highlighted.

A list of candidates for Tehran city council election proposed by the Reformists’ High Council of Policy-Making was also widely covered by newspapers today. Many reformists are critical of the list, questioning the competence of the ones included in the list.

The above issues, as well as many more, are highlighted in the following headlines and top stories:

“Iranians Suffering from Problems Caused by Rouhani’s Gov’t”

In a televised program, Iran’s presidential candidate Ebrahim Raisi took a jab for the current administration and said people are suffering due to problems such as unemployment and poverty.

The highlights of his comments are as follows:

– The ailing economy has an emergency condition. The government’s debts are running into Rls. 2,100 trillion [$56bn]. The cash flow in the society has exceeded Rls. 13,000 trillion [$346bn], Rls. 7,000 trillion [$186bn] of which belongs to the current administration.

– Every day, we are seeing workshops and factories closing down. Fifty percent of the country’s industrial capacity is not active. Living conditions and poverty have turned into people’s concerns.

– The reason why I’m running for president is that I want to help solve people’s problems.

– I think my presence will build a consensus and suit all tastes.

– Based on social canons, it is not acceptable to say if somebody works for even one hour a week, he/she is not unemployed.

– If this administration keeps creating jobs at the current rate, it will take 10 years to solve the problem of unemployment if no jobless person is added to the society during that period. This comes as, each year, a large number of graduates are added to those looking for jobs.

– Up to one and a half million jobs must be created each year.

We have 17 thousand closed workshops which should start operating immediately. Semi-operational workshops should begin work as soon as possible. This is possible.

– Our country has 3,000 kilometres of sea borders. Some European countries have much shorter sea frontiers than us, but it accounts for 50% share of their GDP. The figure for Iran is only two percent.

– We can expedite the trend of housing provision in the country. The ground is prepared for that. We have enough construction material as well, and most items needed in the housing sector are produced domestically. If construction of houses is activated, it will not only solve the problem of housing for people and the youth, but it will create jobs as well.

– Look how much contraband goods enter the country. It harms local production.

– Officials ask where we will get the money from. But these potentialities exist in the country.

– If processing industries are created along with other industries in the agriculture sector, jobs can be created. For example, up to 70 processing industries could be created in the date industry. Each processing industry can create four or five jobs. And these jobs will be steady jobs.

– We can tell trade unions and producers that we want to reach this target in terms of numbers and quality. They will definitely cooperate.

– The Foreign Ministry should set the stage for exports.

– We need to increase exports and reduce nonessential imports. At the outset when this administration came into office, they asked, “Why should we turn the country into a market for Chinese goods?” But during the tenure of this very administration, imports from China have doubled.

– The administration is not paying attention to the number of rural homes which should be constructed according to the law that is 200,000 houses.

– It is possible to increase the number of marriages to one million a year. One of the prerequisites to marriage is housing.

– One of the actions to be taken is to restore and renovate old buildings in cities.

-We can also reactivate the Mehr Housing Project (a plan under which affordable housing units are being constructed and given to those who don’t have homes). [A similar plan called] the Dignity Housing Project can also be launched.

– In the Work and Dignity administration and in cooperation with the parliament, we can encourage land developers to construct up to one million houses annually.

– Why doesn’t the government settle its 100-trillion-rial [$2.6bn] debt to the Pensioners’ Fund?

– The government and Presidential Office’s spending has roughly doubled due to financial mismanagement. Why should it be so? Some financial discipline should be put in place to eliminate extravagance.

– In my administration, there will be no inflated salaries and injustice, which have sparked a public outcry.

– The Central Bank should monitor the banks and institutes which get people’s money and later on run into trouble. It is the Central Bank’s duty. Just giving warning is not enough.

– We have given Rls 5,700 trillion [$152bn] in loans to some individuals. If they are repaid, it will get the wheels of production turning.

– The government’s debts should be looked into immediately.

– There are property and real estate which have been seized. They should be unblocked and get into the financial and monetary cycle.

– We have the Taxation Law, which has not been enforced. This law should be implemented to the letter. The method of receiving taxes is not a new one. The current method is traditional and old. If it becomes more efficient, people will declare their taxes in a better way, and numerous problems will be solved as well.

– Why don’t we trust trade unions? If we take them on board, they can solve the problems.

– It is possible to settle the issue of tax evasion and get tax-evading white-collar individuals to pay their taxes simply through the mechanism which exists at the Internal Revenue Service, where good and experienced people are working.

– People are ready to pay taxes, but they brook no injustice. They say civil servants and self-employed businessmen are paying taxes, but the higher-ups don’t.

– We can bring economy into the spotlight simply through the cyberspace, so that people will get informed of contracts, etc. This both removes concerns and guarantees the government’s transparency.

– When the head of government and ministers are urged to declare their possessions and property to the Judiciary, then naturally top managers know what they should do.

– The smuggling of goods is not only done in the form of small quantities along the border. Rather, it is organized smuggling which has worried people and authorities.

– The intelligence and foreign affairs ministries can help track the foreign hands behind the smuggling of goods into the country.

– Cash subsidies should increase for the lower deciles of population. How can a person live on the Rls. 450,000 ($12) he/she receives as subsidy per month?

– Our dear people should know that whatever I promise has been discussed with experts and can be fulfilled. They should know that I believe I can live up to my promises as I’m familiar with the situation of the people and the country.

Iran-Uzbekistan Ties to Promote Regional Stability: President

In a message to Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani hailed the “effective steps” that the two countries have taken over the past years to promote cooperation in the political, economic and cultural fields.

He also expressed confidence that enhancement of bilateral relations would serve the two countries’ mutual interests and contribute to regional peace and stability.

Uzbekistan declared independence as a sovereign republic on August 31, 1991 in the wake of dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Iran and Uzbekistan launched formal diplomatic relations in May 1992.

Riyadh Excited about Trump’s Upcoming Trip

Donald Trump- Mohammed bin Salman

Saudi officials are very pleased to see Trump making a trip to their country at the end of this month. Riyadh authorities believe the visit can boost their leadership role in regional issues. Moreover, Saudis believe Trump’s forthcoming trip shows the United States has adopted a much different stand than that of former US President Barack Obama on Saudi Arabia and other member states of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council.

Informed Saudi sources have announced that the remarks Trump made after announcing his upcoming trip to the region have made Riyadh officials excited and happy. The comments have dispelled their doubts about the establishment of a new relationship with the new US government, and it is clear to them that Trump seeks a strong alliance with Saudi Arabia. The same sources say Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir’s eulogistic statements about Trump’s visit show Saudi officials are shocked.

The informed sources also quote the foreign minister as saying he is “proud” to see his country hosting the US president in his first overseas trip. All these suggest Saudi officials are very excited and jubilant.

Saudi officials are in a rush to invest in the close relationship taking shape between the US and Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries. Riyadh believes the first year of Trump’s presidency was a determining one, and that it would be expedient for Arabs to take Trump and his policies on board to help them play a more active role in the region.

On his upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia, Trump said that Saudi Arabia is home to two major holy sites in the Muslim world, and that based on this, the US will establish new powerbases for cooperation with and supporting its Muslim allies in fighting extremism, terrorism and violence in a bid to create a more promising and just future for the Muslims in those countries.

He also said the US is not supposed to dictate to others how they should live, but rather, has a responsibility to form an alliance of friends and partners who share with the US the goal of fighting terrorism and ensuring security and stability in the Middle East.

trump-binsalman

Observers believe Trump’s remarks are sending an important message to Saudi Arabia, and that is, he does not accept the Obama administration’s reformist dictates about Saudi Arabia, and, by no means, is seeking reforms in the kingdom. In other words, Trump accepts the reality that Saudi Arabia brooks no sweeping reforms, and only goes for slight reforms in the country given the religious climate prevailing in the society.

Since years ago, Saudi Arabia has been seeking minor reforms while staying away from media hype. The key reason for this concealment is the fear of reaction by radical currents most of which have control over influential institutions such as religious, educational and media forums. The new US administration has already sent the message to visiting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman that it supports reforms in Saudi Arabia the way Riyadh wants. In bin Salman’s trip to the US, he and Trump rehashed their anti-Iran remarks whereby Trump reassured the Saudi side that what he said against Riyadh during his elections campaign was just an attempt to please Republican voters.

Observers are also of the conviction that Trump welcoming bin Salman’s reforms known as “Vision 2030” in order to bring changes and reforms to the country sends the message that Trump supports progress by youth in Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf Arab countries. That is the reason why Trump is going to hold a meeting with leaders of Persian Gulf Arab states during his trip to Riyadh. Moreover, following this Islamic-American meeting, Trump will, as he has announced before, create a broad-based coalition in order to confront both Iran and the ISIS at the same time.

The Saudi foreign minister says Trump’s visit to Riyadh will boost Washington’s cooperation with Islamic countries in fighting terrorism and will include Saudi-American meetings as well as meetings with leaders of the Persian Gulf Arab countries and other heads of Islamic and Arab states. Al-Jubair said Saudi Arabia expects the meetings to further consolidate cooperation between the US and Islamic and Arab countries in combating terrorism and extremism and to change the tone of talks on US relations with Islamic and Arab worlds.

It goes without saying that Trump has completely revisited his predecessor Obama’s positions on the Middle East. Now Trump seeks to create a situation in which Washington will be able to review efforts to bring its allies together based on a more consistent and transparent approach.

Martin S. Indyk, the executive vice president of the Brookings Institution, says Obama’s plan to get closer to Persian Gulf Arab states focused on establishing direct relations with Arab nations through a speech he delivered in Cairo in 2009. But Trump’s program, says Indyk, to establish closer ties with Arab countries is based on cooperation with the governments in ruling Arab countries without holding direct talks with their nations, an approach that Arab leaders prefer to that of Obama.

One of Trump’s deputies, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the New York Times daily that there are major differences between the two administrations’ approaches on clinging to power and on influencing Iran. The deputy writes Iran’s power in the region has boosted Arab leaders’ confidence in American leaders following Trump’s harsh remarks during his election campaign. Such trust was virtually non-existent in the Obama era. He visited Saudi Arabia while seeking to launch a process to establish peace between Arabs and Israel. But it seems Trump has taken lessons from Obama’s interaction and abandoned his narrow-minded approach vis-à-vis his Persian Gulf Arab allies.

US officials who accompanied Obama on his plane during his visit to Saudi Arabia told the New York Times that Obama was shocked when he heard Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz said in response to his request that Saudi Arabia would be the last country to make peace with Israel. Following unorthodox changes taking place in the Saudi rule since King Salman bin Abdulaziz took power, Washington has witnessed fundamental changes in its relations with Saudi Arabia during the tenure of two recent US administrations. Saudi Arabia has recently aggrandized Iran’s influence in the region, and acted in conformity with Trump’s policies. A senior White House official said Trump has been surprised at new Saudi rulers’ preparedness to cooperate with Washington.

Iranian General Vows to Write ‘Death to Israel’ on All Bullets

Brigadier General Gholam-Hossein Gheybparvar, the head of Basij [volunteer forces] Organisation, severely censured comments by Hassan Rouhani, one of the six candidates contesting in Iran’s May 19 presidential elections, saying the IRGC will continue to write “Death to Israel” not only on its missiles, but also on its bullets.

According to a report by IFP, addressing the second live presidential debate on Friday (May 5), Rouhani implicitly criticized the IRGC’ move, in March 2016, to write “Israel should be wiped off the Earth” in Hebrew on one of the ballistic missiles it tested shortly after the going into effect of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

In reaction to Rouhani’s remarks, Gheybparvar said, “The Zionist regime […] has increased its hostility towards Iran on a daily basis.”

“How is it possible that after being witness to the Zionist regime’s fierce and long-standing enmity towards Iran, some people still criticize writing ‘Death to Israel’ on our missiles,” Basij Press quoted him as saying.

“We will write it [the slogan] on the bullets as well. In fact, wiping out Israel, is our aspiration and an indisputable strategy which needs a strong determination,” Gheybparvar added.

He said the phrase “Death to Israel” is a strategic slogan, adding all of the world’s noble people and freethinkers are proud that Iran has become powerful enough to stand against the enemy chest-to-chest.

Gheybparvar expressed surprise at seeing some people cast doubt on the Establishment’s great achievements in a bid to win more votes.

Iran’s battle with Israel is a non-negotiable issue and unquestionable fact, he said, adding, “Who does have any doubt that Israel is not the main source of all crimes in Palestine and Lebanon? Who believes that Arab rulers and Israel are not each other’s accomplice?”

Leader Warns against Enemy Plots to Disrupt Iran’s Security

Speaking at Tehran’s Imam Hossein University on Wednesday, Ayatollah Khamenei said “the short-term goal sought by the enemy is to disrupt security, and bring about melee and sedition in the country.”

The Leader added that the Islamic Republic has been able “to create a safe environment in a region rife with tensions and a world rife with frenzy,” stressing that enemies seek to take this honor away from the Iranian nation.

“If we stand prepared to confront this plot to create insecurity and sedition, we will surely be able to neutralize it,” Ayatollah Khamenei asserted.

The mid-term goal pursued by the enemy, the Leader stated, comprises damaging Iran’s economy through various means so that the people lose their hope due to austere economic conditions.

Leader Warns against Enemy Plots to Disrupt Iran's SecurityAyatollah Khamenei noted that in the long run, the enemies are trying to “change the essence of [Iran’s] Islamic establishment.”

The Leader said there was a time when the enemies unequivocally insisted that the Islamic Republic be destroyed.

However, after finding out about their incapacity to realize the ambition and its adverse consequences for them, the enemies modified the assertion by saying that the Republic had to instead change its attitude, the Leader added.

1-Leader Warns against Enemy Plots to Disrupt Iran's SecurityThe Leader said the initial plot and the altered version are in fact one and the same.

Highlighting the importance of the May 19 presidential election, Ayatollah Khamenei urged everyone to submit to the law and morality and refuse to hearten the enemy by making inapt remarks.

The elections, the Leader said, need security and calm, adding, “Should anyone seek to rise up against the country’s security, they will sure be met with a strong reaction.”

The Leader underlined that the efforts aimed at adversely affecting the Islamic Republic during its presidential elections of 2008 were faced with “the firm wall of national will.”

“The same holds true today. The country’s security should stay untouched. Those who choose to violate this course should know that they will be given a slap in the face,” Ayatollah Khamenei cautioned.

“Arab States’ Man-Made Islands Threatening Persian Gulf Environment”

Man-Made Islands

Iranian lawmaker Ali Akbari says construction and selling of man-made islands by a number of Arab nations in the Persian Gulf has negative impacts on the environment of all littoral states around the gulf and will lead to several adverse environmental consequences for the regional countries.

Reaction Required

According to a report by IFP, Akbari stressed that the Iranian Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should show reaction to the move by these Arab states.

As per the Kuwait Regional Convention for Cooperation on the Protection of the Marine Environment from Pollution, signed by Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in Kuwait on April 24, 1978, he noted, each state should endeavour to carry out an assessment of the potential environmental effects in any planning activity entailing projects within its territory, particularly in the coastal areas, which may have significant risks of pollution for the gulf.

“Therefore, since the construction of these islands has damaging consequences for the environment, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is required to use shrewd diplomacy and ask the international environmental centres to address and tackle the international issue.”

Aquatics, Corals Endangered

Akbari expressed concern over the fact that constructing man-made residential islands in the Persian Gulf leads to the extinction of certain aquatic and corals species, adding the absence of coral species would lead to severe pollution of the coasts in the region, particularly the Iranian ones, as they act as natural filters and help clean water.

In addition, he noted, the unrestrained use of water desalinators by some Arab states in the Persian Gulf has increased the salinity of the gulf’s water, which, per se, upsets the balance of its ecosystem.
