Charlie Hebdo Once Again Provokes Anger among Muslims

The cartoon depicts two people lying on the ground in a pool of blood after having been run over by a white van with the caption “Islam is a religion of peace….. eternal.”

Critics including Muslims and non-Muslims have seen the cartoon as suggesting Islam is an inherently violent religion.

Some of the leading magazines across the world have blamed Charlie Hebdo for publishing the cartoon, arguing that Charlie Hebdo has gone too far as the drawing was “Islamophobic”, “racist” and “revolting”. They say unlike what the staff of Charlie Hebdo maintains, such cartoons only hurt freedom of expression.

Even some of French politicians slammed Charlie Hebdo. Socialist MP Stephane Le Foll called the cartoon “extremely dangerous” and warned such association of ideas between Islam being a religion of peace and the violence of the attack could be used by others.

“When you’re a journalist you need to exercise restraint because making these associations can be used by other people,” he said.

In an editorial, Charlie Hebdo’s editor Laurent Sourisseau explained his editorial choice by saying experts and policy-makers are avoiding asking hard questions out of concern for moderate Muslims. “The debates and questions about the role of religion and in particular the role of Islam in these attacks have completely disappeared,” he added.

The magazine, notorious for its provocative and politically incorrect stance, regularly mocks religions including Islam.

In January 2015, Charlie Hebdo was the target of a terror attack. Two gunmen walked into the magazine’s offices in Paris and opened fire, killing 12. The magazine had previously published a number of controversial caricatures of the prophet of Islam.

Drug Traffickers in Iran Swallow 1.8kg of Opium

“The three narco-traffickers were under police surveillance when they set off on a trip to one of the southern provinces,” said Colonel Hadi Qazvine’I, the drug enforcement chief of Iran’s Hamadan province.

“After reviewing the available information, police found out that the drug traffickers intended to take the narcotics to Malayer by swallowing them,” said the colonel, according to a Farsi report by Khabar Online.

“The smugglers wanted to distribute the drugs in Malayer, buy they were arrested by drug enforcement police Monday afternoon before they arrived in the city,” he said.

They were taken to hospital where x-rays were taken of their stomachs, he noted, adding that the results showed drugs in small packs inside.

“After the drugs were excreted from their bodies, it became clear that each one of them had swallowed around 600 grammes of opium,” he said.

The colonel noted that swallowing is one of the old and very dangerous methods of smuggling illicit drugs.

“As long as narcotics are inside the smugglers’ stomachs, they mustn’t eat or drink anything because eating and drinking will prompt peptic acid secretion, which wrecks the packaging of the drugs.”

“If the packaging of the narcotics inside the stomach is destroyed, the smuggler is sure to die if his/her stomach is not washed out by a doctor promptly,” said the top police official.

It is noteworthy that over three tonnes of narcotics have been seized in Hamadan in the past five months.

Gadget Developed to Connect Mobile Phones to Optical Devices

Mohammad Sabouri, an Iranian inventor, has developed an adaptor used to connect different types of mobile phones and tablets to microscopes, telescopes and various kinds of optical devices.

The innovation can turn gadgets into cameras, and has applications in medicine or other sciences where the naked eye is used to see, according to a Farsi report by Tasnim.

The innovated adaptor is installed next to the optical device and turns mobile phones and tablets into gadgets capable of taking photos or making films, which could be shared accordingly.

When optical devices are used, says the innovator, only one person is capable of seeing the scene from behind the ocular lens. But in some cases, it is possible to share the scene with others through the optical device.

“The scene could be anything from a microscope slide to celestial bodies,” he said.

He said the gadget he has innovated makes it possible for mobile phones or tablets to be installed next to optical devices and record films or take pictures after being adjusted to the required settings.

He claims his innovation is the first of its kind as no similar device had been developed until he devised the adaptor.

Directed by Mahdi Zamanpour Kiasari, the documentary is about an old man who, despite losing his eyesight at the age of forty due to a genetic disorder, is not only leading a normal life independently, but engages in activities that even ordinary people fail to perform.

In late September 2017, the flExiff 2002-2022 will present its 15th and last edition, despite lack of funds, with unconditional support from filmmakers and support from Sydney Olympic Park Authority.

This year, the filmfest will be a part of Sydney Fringe Festival to represent Western Sydney. Over 50 short and feature length films from 30 countries will be screened at flEXiff 2017.

Iran Develops Versatile Mini-Tractor for Gardening

The versatile mini-tractor has been designed and produced for the first time thanks to financial and logistical support by the Technology Development Department of the Islamic Azad University.

According to a Farsi report by Azad News Agency (ANA), a number of researchers, elites and faculty members of the university have contributed to the project.

The mini-tractor can be produced on an industrial scale and supplied to the market, Abbas Nemati, an expert on the research team, says.

According to him, the mini-tractor can be used in all gardens and farms as it is versatile and enjoys high maneuverability.

The machine can be equipped with different devices such as ploughshares, water pumps, cultivators, etc., he added.

The mini-tractor has good engine power, high quality and endurance, low fuel consumption and an affordable price, the researcher noted.

During the Tuesday meeting, Jaberi Ansari and Nasrallah exchanged views about the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine.

Jaberi Ansari offered his congratulations on the recent victories of the Lebanese army and Resistance in fight against terrorist groups.

He also expressed the hope that these victories would lead to further stability in Lebanon.

Nasrallah, for his part, thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its support of Lebanon.

He also underlined the internal cohesion between the Lebanese army, resistance forces, people, and government.

Iran Rejects Erdogan’s Claim about Joint Operation against PKK

“We have not devised any operation plan outside the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the IRGC Ground Force’s Hamzeh Seyed al-Shohada base said in a statement on Tuesday.

“But like in the past, we will strongly counter any group, team or individual seeking to infiltrate into the Iranian territory to carry out terrorist or anti-security measures,” it added.

It said some terrorist groups based in camps in northern Iraq have been seeking to cause insecurity in Iran in recent years with the logistical support of the enemies of the Islamic Republic; however, they have repeatedly failed to conduct any move and sustained heavy damage.

The IRGC base vowed a “crushing and harsh” response to these groups intending to carry out the slightest move to create insecurity in Iran’s border areas.

Turkey’s President Erdogan said on Monday that a joint Turkish-Iranian operation against Kurdish militants was “always on the agenda.”

“It is always on the agenda to carry out a joint operation with Iran against those terror organizations which pose a threat,” Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul before a visit to Jordan.

Turkey has been fighting against the outlawed PKK militants for decades.

Iran is also fighting PJAK, a PKK offshoot, in its northwestern border region with Turkey. Iranian forces killed five PJAK terrorists in an ambush there last June.

PJAK randomly carries out hit-and-run attacks on Iranian targets, after which they retreat to their lairs in Iraq and Turkey.

Israel, Terrorism Threatening Middle East: Lebanese PM

“Two dangers, namely the Zionist regime of Israel and terrorism, are threatening Lebanon and the region,” Hariri said in a Tuesday meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari in Beirut.

The Lebanese premier further noted cooperation and partnership among Lebanon’s different political groups is the main driving force behind the Lebanese government’s recent accomplishments.

“We are determined to continue this approach,” he went on to say.

Israel, Terrorism Threatening Middle East: Lebanese PMHe also conveyed his greetings to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as well as First Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and expressed the hope that the two countries would further boost mutual ties.

Jaberi Ansari, for his part, echoed Hariri’s remarks concerning the two dangers (Israel and terrorism), and noted, “These two threats can serve as common ground for promotion of Iran-Lebanon ties as well as regional cooperation.”

The Iranian official further touched upon the beginning of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s second term in office, and said Tehran stands ready to enhance relations with Beirut on all fronts.

Jaberi Ansari said regional crises could be settled through dialogue, understanding, and political partnership, describing Lebanon as a good example of national consensus and domestic coexistence.

Asghar Farhadi Starts Shooting Latest Film in Spain

Budgeted at 10 million euros ($11.8 million), the Spanish-language film is being produced by Alexandre Mallet-Guy at Paris-based Memento Films Production and Alvaro Longoria at Spanish outfit Morena Films.

Written by Farhadi, “Everybody Knows” follows the journey of Carolina as she travels with her family from Buenos Aires to her hometown in Spain for a celebration. Meant to be a brief visit, the trip is disturbed by unforeseen events that will completely change the lives of Carolina and her family.

Farhadi earlier revealed the high-profile, real-life Bardem-Cruz couple will “not necessarily” play an on-screen couple in the Spanish-language feature.

“Once again there are different couples in my film, not only one,” Farhadi told Screen in March, of what is a recurring theme of his work.

“The film is again about family and family relationships. But there are also some new aspects in it. Yes [Cruz and Bardem] are in the film but they are not necessarily a couple in the film.”

The non-Spanish speaker said he has written the script for the new film in Farsi and it has been translated into Spanish. “I don’t speak Spanish,” he explained via a translator. “But I have time between now and the shoot to at least become more familiar with the music of the film and do my best.”

“Everybody Knows,” which has started shooting near Madrid, is being sold worldwide by Memento Films International, according to Variety.

“Everybody Knows” marks the third collaboration between Farhadi and Mallet-Guy after “The Salesman” and “The Past,” which Memento Films produced and distributed in France. Before winning a foreign-language Oscar, “The Salesman” scooped two awards at last year’s Cannes for best script for Farhadi and best actor for Shahab Hosseini, while “The Past” earned Berenice Bejo a best actress award at Cannes in 2013.

“Everybody Knows’” key crew includes Jose-Luis Alcaine, a cinematographer who has worked with Carlos Saura, Bigas Luna and Pedro Almodovar; Sonia Grande, the costume designer of Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” and Alejandro Amenábar’s “The Others”; and Hayedeh Safiyari, the editor who worked with Farhadi on “A Separation” and “The Salesman.”

France 3 Cinema, Lucky Red, Untitled Films Aie and Asghar Farhadi Production are co-producing “Everybody Knows” in association with Memento Films Distribution, Cofinova and Indefilms.

“Everybody Knows” is being backed by Canal Plus, Eurimages, France Televisions, Movistar, Cine + and ICAA.
