Witnesses say masked attackers used guns and explosives during the Friday’s assault.

At least eight assailants and eight security personnel were killed, the military said. Officials also said that more than 80 people, including civilians, were wounded.

The national police force confirmed that Friday’s attacks occurred in an area near the prime minister’s office and the United Nations roundabout. An attack also occurred at the French embassy, officials said.

The embassy came under attack around 10:15 GMT. A military police officer and four attackers were killed, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a televised address.

The second attack occurred when fighters opened fire on the army headquarters on the other side of town. Explosions could be heard, according to witnesses, and smoke was seen above some of the buildings.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Inside the First Iranian Museum Dedicated to a Female Artist

Born in the Iranian city of Qazvin in 1924, Monir’s distinguished career has spanned more than five decades.

The artist studied at the Fine Arts Faculty of Tehran University before moving to New York in 1945 to become one of the first Iranian students to study in the United States after the World War II, according to a Farsi report by the Tehran-based Tandis magazine.

She graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1949 and then became a Member of the New York Art Students’ League (1950-53).

Inside the First Iranian Museum Dedicated to a Female ArtistEngulfed in the epicentre of the modern art world, she worked alongside many iconic contemporary American artists including Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson and Andy Warhol, all of whom had an influence on her work.

Her works combine complex geometric patterns seen in the Islamic art with western modern abstraction and expressionism.

Monir’s work is housed in several major public collections, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where she had her first US solo museum exhibition in 2015.

She returned to Iran in 2004, after spending much of her career abroad.

A museum was opened in her honour in Tehran in mid-December, the first in Iran devoted to a woman artist.

The museum, located in the historic Negarestan Museum Park Gardens in Tehran, is run by the University of Tehran.

It houses 51 works of the solo Iranian female artist donated by Monir herself, including her signature mirror mosaics, abstract monotypes and reverse glass paintings, inspired by geometric patterns germane to ancient Iranian architecture, particularly those seen in mosques.

Monir is still producing works in Tehran.

Iran Working on Plan to Oblige Officials to Restitute Ill-Gotten Gains

Financial Corruption

Siamak Moreh Sedgh, who represents the Iranian Jewish community in the Parliament, said the implementation of the legislation would increase people’s trust in the country’s officials.

“I have a general viewpoint, and that is we should move on the path to financial transparency, be it for authorities or others, and hence, the origin of the properties of all people should become clear,” said the MP, according to a Farsi report by ICANA.

He described “financial transparency” and “restricting cash transactions” as among the measures to be adopted to tackle economic corruption.

“The plan on the restitution of officials’ ill-gotten gains is a very good action to build up people’s confidence in the country’s authorities and serves as a positive step in that path,” said the lawmaker.

He said a cap should be put on the financial transactions conducted in cash and transactions should basically be done and registered via the banking system in order to prevent bribery and financial abuse.

“Anybody who wants to invest money somewhere, he or she must prove that the money is earned through legitimate means,” he noted.

The MP then said he will be ready to voluntarily allow his wealth to be investigated.

“In line with implementing the plan on the restitution of officials’ illegally gained wealth, I can volunteer to be the first person [the source of] whose wealth is probed,” he said.

A group of lawmakers have prepared and will put to the vote a plan that obliges all Iranian officials to restitute all the money and properties they have gained illegally during their term in office.

Top Iranian Cleric Urges Officials to Stay Away from Aristocracy

Friday Prayers Imam of Ilam in Western Iran who was criticized for using an SUV, a symbol of aristocracy in Iran

Mohammad Mohammadian, the representative of Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at Iranian universities, says aristocracy will chip away at social assets.

He reiterated that managers as well as the clergy should steer clear of aristocracy and should lead a simple life, reported the Persian-language Tasnim News Agency.

Mohammadian said if a Friday Prayer Imam makes a

mistake, he should be criticised.

“If a Friday Prayer Imam has been to a party which was beneath his dignity, we should tell him that what he did was wrong while respecting him; we should criticise and ask why he behaved that way,” said the official.

“If a Friday Prayer Imam is taken to task for spending billions [of rials] on his election campaign, he mustn’t become worried and upset because this is transparency,” the Leader’s representative underscored.

“Our youth and university students should be bold enough to criticise,” he said.

However, he underlined that criticism is different from bias, and “a line needs to be drawn between a person who speaks and acts with prejudice and the one who criticises sympathetically.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mohammadian rhetorically asked, “How can we sit idly by and simply watch when somebody at … university is clawing at the establishment and wants to gouge out its eyes?”

“The university is no place for such acts,” he underlined.

He said logical criticism and argumentation are different from insulting and fighting the establishment.

“Criticism is different from mudslinging and insulting,” he said.

The Leader’s representative then touched upon the importance of cultural activities at universities, urging university authorities in charge of cultural affairs to discharge their responsibilities and promote cultural activities.

The comments came after the Leader’s representative and Friday Prayers Imam of Ilam in western Iran was harshly criticised for using an SUV car, and refusing to accept the criticisms.

Iran Central Bank Insists on Ditching Dollar in Transactions

In his letter to Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Shariatmadari, Seif underlined that by ditching the US dollar in transactions, the government can reduce demands for dollar from foreign currency exchanges.

“Despite the Iranian government’s policy to replace dollar as the base currency with other currencies in the country’s foreign trade, the applicants can still register their orders for commodity imports in US dollar through the website of Iran Trade Promotion Organization,” the letter read, as quoted in a Farsi report by Fars News Agency.

The letter added that according to reports received by the Central Bank of Iran, a large number of applicants have already registered their orders through the website with dollar as the main currency.

Seif also noted that given the continuation of the US sanctions on Iran, which have cut the access of the country’s banking system to the dollar-based banking networks, registering orders based on US dollar means giving the currency exchanges the upper hand in all transactions.

“This will increase demands for US dollar by the currency exchanges. The trend stands in stark contradiction to the order of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani,” Seif said.

President Rouhani, he noted, had called on relevant organizations to pave the way for transferring all financial turnover from currency exchange offices to the banking system.

The governor then called on the Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade to change the procedures and put an end to dollar-based order registration.

The letter was sent to the Ministry on February 13. A copy of the letter has also been sent to President Rouhani.

Political Issues Should Not Affect Sports: Iran’s President

At the meeting held in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Thursday, President Rouhani pointed to the importance and role of sport, especially football, in vitality, health and close ties between nations, and said, “As the supreme international football institution, FIFA and regional federations must be careful not to let non-sports claims and issues affect sports.”

“Regarding the appeal of football for nations and especially young people, the FIFA can play a significant role in bringing nations closer together.”

“Fortunately, today the Iranian people, especially the younger generation, are very interested in sports and especially football, and sport events are followed by a lot of excitement, which you will see in the competition between the two most popular football clubs in the capital today,” Rouhani told Infantino, referring to Tehran derby between Esteghlal and Persepolis football clubs.

Stressing that the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has always tried to provide more and more access to sport, he said, “Public and professional sport activities are increasing in our country today, and national teams of Iran take part in various fields of sport at global levels, including the presence of Iranian national football teams at all levels in regional and global competitions.”

According to official website of the president, Rouhani also referred to the passionate presence of women in various fields of sport, especially football, and said, “Today, Iranian women are present livelier in sport fields, including 23,000 women athletes in football.”

“Iran is a safe country and is ready to host regional and international sports and groups,” Rouhani underlined, pointing out that regional federations should seek to bring nations closer together and increase friendships.

The Iranian president also emphasized the need for FIFA to promote the rights of nations to watch their favorite teams in their stadiums and country.

Also at the meeting, the President of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Gianni Infantino expressed satisfaction over meeting with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and said, “Football has an important social role worldwide, and the Iranian people are truly among the most passionate fans of football in the world.”

“FIFA is always looking to improve the world through sports and will not hesitate to help improve the level of football in Iran.”

Infantino also described the Iran national football team (also known as Team Melli) as powerful and said, “The people of Iran, like any other nation, have the right to cheer their team at their stadium, and we, as the international federation of football, will try to defend this right.”

Iran in Heart of Every Single Bosnian Citizen: PM

Speaking in a Friday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Sarajevo, Zvizdic thanked Iran for its support for his country in the past, saying Iran is in the heart of every Bosnian citizen.

Describing Tehran-Sarajevo bilateral ties as “very friendly”, the Bosnian premier said he sees no problem in relations but his government is willing to expand economic collaboration with Iran.

“Signing preferential trade agreements, establishing banking connections and facilitating [procedures for obtaining] visas are among measures needed to be taken to remove obstacles to greater trade cooperation,” he said.

Zarif, in turn, conveyed the warm greetings of Iran’s First Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri and extended his invitation to Zvizdic to visit Tehran.

“Bosnia has been in the heart of Iranians since a long time ago. Tehran sees no limit to expansion of relations and cooperation with Bosnia,” he said.

Zarif said Iran’s policy is to help boost solidarity and stability of Bosnia and cooperate with all ethnic groups in the country.

“The meeting of Iran-Bosnia joint economic commission would help foster economic cooperation between the two sides,” Zarif said.

“Establishing direct banking relations and facilitating [procedures for obtaining] visas can also help remove obstacles to cooperation,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Zarif also met with Ognjen Tadić, the Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and several other members of the legislative body.

In the Friday meeting, Tadić welcomed the top Iranian diplomat and said he takes pride in having visited Iran two years ago.

“I had the honour to travel to Iran in 2016 and be a guest of [Iranian Parliament Speaker] Dr. Ali Larijani. I have good memories of that trip, which had a good outcome as well. I felt first-hand the friendship between Iranian people and the Bosnian nation,” said the parliamentarian.

The Iranian foreign minister, in turn, conveyed Larijani’s warmest greetings to the Bosnian lawmaker.

“I had a very fruitful trip where businessmen and entrepreneurs of both countries did good work together. We are keen to see sustainable stability and friendship in Bosnia and we call for cooperation with all ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the foreign minister underlined.

Zarif said the two nations enjoy age-old and robust cultural ties, adding, “We stand ready for the enhancement of relations on all fronts and we have no limitations in that regard.”

Also on the agenda of the talks were the enhancement of people-to-people exchanges, especially in the tourism sector, promotion of economic and trade ties, and offering visa services.

The two sides further exchanged views on regional and international issues as well as the need for an all-out campaign against terrorism and extremism.

Also in the meeting, representatives of both chambers of the legislature (the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the House of Peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina) welcomed the Iranian foreign minister and announced that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s legislature supports the promotion of relations with Iran in all areas.
