Mismanagement, Not Sanctions, Main Cause of Iranian Currency Devaluation: Leader

Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has blamed the government for the ongoing economic crisis in the country, saying the internal factor has been much more effective than external ones like sanctions.

Addressing thousands of Iranian people in Tehran on Monday, the Leader said, “Economic experts and many of our officials agree that internal elements, rather than external ones, are behind the ongoing issue [of the devaluation of Iranian currency].”

The Leader said he does not rule out the impact of sanctions, but the majority of the problems are caused by mismanagement.

If the economy is managed in a “better, more prudent, and stronger” way, then the sanctions would fail to have any significant impact, and resistance would be possible, the Leader noted.

He harshly criticized the Rouhani administration’s performance in managing the gold coin and foreign currency markets, saying that the officials’ negligence and imprudence led to abuses in these markets.

A dramatic rise in the rate of foreign currencies has adversely affected Iranian markets in recent months.

Amid a historic devaluation of the Iranian rial, the US dollar is currently exchanged for prices above 100,000 rials in the free market.

Even a package of measures recently unveiled by the Central Bank has failed to rein in the recent turbulence in foreign currency market.

Azerbaijan President Denounces US Sanctions on Iran

In a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the Caspian summit in Kazakhstan on Sunday, the Azeri president said his country condemns the American sanctions against the Iranian nation.

Azerbaijan’s stance towards Iran is in compliance with fraternity and the international law, Aliyev noted.

He also assured the Iranian president that “nobody” could ever damage the brotherly ties between Baku and Tehran.

For his part, President Rouhani highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and religious bonds between Tehran and Baku, saying Iran believes in brotherly ties with the Republic of Azerbaijan, something beyond the neighborly interaction.

“By promoting the level of cooperation and coordination, Tehran and Baku will not allow the ill-wishers to harm the two countries’ relations,” President Rouhani noted.

Pointing to the numerous opportunities available for enhanced relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, the president called for efforts to accelerate the implementation of the bilateral agreements and joint projects.

The Iranian president returned to Tehran on Sunday night after taking part in the Caspian summit that concluded with a long-awaited convention on the legal regime of the large lake.

The five littoral states – Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Azerbaijan- also signed six other agreements in the summit.

Iran Parliament Summons FM Zarif to Explain Caspian Sea Legal Regime

Lawmaker Alireza Rahimi said Monday Zarif will attend a meeting of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission next week, ISNA reported.

Iran and four ex-Soviet nations, including Russia, signed a landmark convention on the legal status of the resource-rich Caspian Sea in the Kazakh port city of Aktau on Sunday.

The five states agreed in principle how to divide up the world’s biggest enclosed body of water.

Iranian social media was ablaze on Sunday with rumours that Iran is the main loser in the deal.

This is while Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the delimitation of the seabed, which determines Iran’s share of the oil and gas reserves of the sea, will require additional agreements between littoral nations.

The five countries have been negotiating their shares of the sea for more than 20 years.

US Owes Iran over $110 Billion in Compensation: VP

“Individuals and private firms damaged by the US’ moves in the past decades have filed complaints in Iranian courts and verdicts have been issued in their favour. By now, the amount of compensation the US must pay has crossed 110 billion dollars,” Laya Joneydi said on Sunday.

Speaking to Khabar Online, Joneidi said that following the US withdrawal from the nuclear pact, Iranian courts will begin handling new complaints against the US, and the debt is going to rise.

Back in early May, US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the 2015 nuclear pact with Iran reached by his predecessor Barack Obama and other world powers, and ordered tough US sanctions on Tehran.

The Iranian government has filed a lawsuit in the International Court of Justice against the US alleging that Washington’s decision to re-impose sanctions violates a 1955 treaty between the two countries.

Iran is also challenging a ruling by the US Supreme Court in the ICJ to take its money back.

Last year, the US Supreme Court ruled that Iran’s central bank must turn over $2.1 billion in frozen assets to victims of the 1983 Marine Corps barracks bombing in Lebanon, for which Iran was found liable by US courts.

Iran, US Could Barter Compensations

Joneidi said the Iranian plaintiffs could appoint the Iranian government as their proxy, so the government can ask its US counterpart to compensate for the damages.

The vice president said the American people claiming to be victims of Iran’s terrorism hold some 80 billion dollars in federal court rulings against Iranian government entities and officials.

Asked if the two countries could barter for compensations, Joneidi said this is a possibility.

“If there are serious negotiations and the two sides have strong will, this can be done,” she said.

Ancient Castle in Western Iran Boasts Fabulous Architecture

The castle is a historical monument built in the Qajar era.

It is located in a village in Darreh-Shahr town in Ilam province. Based on the manuscript hung at the entrance to the building, it was constructed in 1886 by then ruler Mirgholam Hashemi.

The monument was registered on Iran’s List of National Monuments in 2000.

The castle boasts the Qajar-style architecture, with four porches. Made of rocks and plaster, the building was used for both residential and military purposes at the time.

Although the monument is well over a century old, the facade of the building is robust enough thanks to its architectural style and the construction materials used in it, so much so that the outward skeleton of the monument has remained intact.

The façade of the monument has been coated with mud and plaster, and there are no empty spaces on the walls outside.

The castle has two watchtowers at its northeastern and northwestern ends. There are also three chambers for sentries, two on the western wing and one on top of the lintels at the entrances to the northern wing.

Like in other castles in Ilam, in the middle of the castle’s yard lies a square-shaped pond. Water flows into a canal branching off from a river before it passes under the wall on the castle’s southern wing and flows into the pond. The water then flows out of the pond through the northern wing.

What follows are IRNA’s photos of the castle:

Iranian Researchers Develop Industrial Drier, Breaking US Monopoly

Iranian Researchers Develop Industrial Drier, Breaking US Monopoly

Manager of the project Mehrdad Niakosari says the drier is used to dry different materials, including foodstuffs and medicinal herbs, adding the device could be used to dry materials which are sensitive to heat.

“Unlike what the public may believe, water and, in fact, the radiational-thermal energy of hot water is used to dry things,” he said, as quoted by the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA).

The apparatus has been optimized and is considered a “green” device, said the researcher.

According to Niakosari, the apparatus is fitted with a system which recycles water and returns it to the drier.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review

“The temperature at which drying takes place is between 80 to 85 degrees centigrade. The system is equipped with a special polymer which functions like a window; so, heat transfer stops after foodstuffs are dried, keeping them from over-drying and suffering damage,” he added.

He said the technology to manufacture the apparatus had, so far, been monopolized by an American company, but now the monopoly is broken.

“Of course, the apparatus produced in Iran can not only be used as a drier, but has a thickening property, which is a monopoly of Iran,” he said, adding the apparatus has been patented in the United States as well.

Rouhani, Putin Sit for Talks in Kazakhstan

During the Sunday meeting, Rouhani and Vladimir Putin discussed the most significant mutual, regional and international issues, underlining the need for further expansion of mutual relations between Tehran and Moscow.

The Iranian president said cooperation between Iran and Russia in the Caspian Sea are within the interests of the two sides and added the two sides should attempt to turn the Caspian Sea into a sea of peace and friendship and a source for strengthening of relations and cooperation among the littoral states.

“Mutual and multi-national relations between Iran and Russia in various regional and international issues including regional security and fight against terrorism in Syria have already led to positive results and the cooperation should continue till regional terrorism is eradicated,” he said.

For his part, Putin referred to the growing relations between Iran and Russia in various areas and said Moscow is ready to further expand its relations with Tehran in various fields.

The Russian president also described the Iran nuclear deal as an important international treaty and underlined the need for preserving and strengthening the deal by all involved sides following the US illegal withdrawal.

He also called for further talks between Iran and Russia on regional and international issues.

Rouhani, Putin Sit for Talks in KazakhstanIran, Kazakhstan Enjoy Great Transit Capacities: Rouhani

Rouhani also held a separate meeting with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the sidelines of the Caspian Sea Summit.

During the meeting, Rouhani said Iran and Kazakhstan enjoy great transit capacities, and can take advantage of the capacities for meeting their national interests.

He added Tehran attaches huge importance to relations with Astana and added the two countries enjoy lots of cultural and historical commonalities.

President Rouhani praised Astana for its active regional roles particularly in Syria Peace Talks and other security and regional issues and said Kazakhstan has always stood behind the Iranian nation particularly in the case of the JCPOA.

Rouhani then referred to the growing banking ties between the two sides and said Tehran and Astana can take long strides in using their national currencies to expand mutual economic relations.

For his part, Kazakh President Nazarbayev expressed his country’s support for the Iran nuclear deal and said Kazakhstan is after strengthening its ties with the Islamic Republic.

“Despite problems created by the foreign powers for the Iranian nation, we are sure that the grand and historical country of Iran can overcome the problems,” he noted.

Landmark Convention on Caspian Sea Legal Regime Signed in Kazakhstan

The convention was signed by President Hassan Rouhani of the Islamic Republic of Iran, President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation, President Nursultan Nazarbayev of the Republic of Kazakhstan, President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow of the Republic of Turkmenistan.

The signing ceremony was held in Aktau, Kazakhstan, after a meeting between the five leaders on Sunday.

High-ranking officials of the five Caspian Sea littoral states also signed six cooperation documents in the presence of the five presidents.

Protocol of cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the Caspian Sea, protocol of cooperation in the fight against organised crime in the Caspian Sea, agreement between the governments of the Caspian Sea littoral states on economic cooperation, agreement between the governments of Caspian Sea littoral states in the field of transportation, agreement in preventing accidents in the Caspian Sea, and protocol of cooperation and interaction of the border authorities of the Caspian Sea countries were the documents that were signed by the five countries in order to further strengthen their cooperation in the Caspian Sea region.

New Step for Further Cooperation

Speaking in a joint press conference in Aktau, President Rouhani stated that by signing the Caspian Sea Legal Regime Convention, a new step has been taken for better relations between the five littoral countries of the Caspian.

“Today, the five Caspian Sea littoral states took very important steps for strengthening regional security and better relations between each other, as well as taking better advantage of the Caspian Sea.”

“Relations of Iran with Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan have always been friendly and close and this is the main factor for signing such agreements,” he added.

He also said that one of the very important achievements of the Caspian Sea Legal Regime Convention was that it ensures security and stability in the sea.

“Being explicitly stated that the Caspian Sea belongs only to the five littoral states and also stipulating that no foreign force and military vessel is able to be present in it and that maritime security is exclusive to the five littoral states, and also stressing the fact that the territories of none of the Caspian Sea region state can be used against another country means that the stability and security of the sea is important.”

Tehran Ready to Help Boost Regional Trade

Earlier in the day, Rouhani also told the summit that Tehran is prepared to use its maritime access in the north and south to play a strategic role for development of trade and transportation in the region.

Speaking on Sunday at Caspian Sea Littoral States Summit, President Rouhani said, “Today, this region has turned into a successful model for guaranteeing peace, stability, friendship, good neighbourliness and progress and this summit is another step for further convergence in the region that needs to be strengthened by taking more steps.”
