Sculpture Exhibition Displays Changes Human Beings Undergo

Abouzar Vanaki’s exhibition titled “We Are … We’ll Become” displays human figures undergoing changes from what they are to what they want to become.

The exhibition, recently held in Shirin Gallery in Tehran, put on display 13 sculptures, each of which has a height of 70cm.

The figures are hanging in various positions depicting the process of going through different stages.

Vanaki says the figures resemble human body but they belong to creatures which have transformed themselves. The figures have unusually large hands and feet, strange face or other features distinguishing them from ordinary human beings.

“All these features have been achieved due to their will to become something else. When we decide to become something else, we destroy the solid bases of our being to achieve what we are looking for. The figures in the exhibition are indeed people who have undergone the changes and achieved the new shape they had in mind,” he noted.

Vanaki has made the figures out of resin. He has also coloured them with oil colours giving them the appearance of real creatures. The figures’ bodies are tanned and shrouded in soil. Meanwhile, they are covered in old clothes which seem to be the last ones left for them in the world.

According to the Iranian artist, a visitor who is going through a hard time in his/her life may say how miserable the figures on display in the exhibition are.

“But a visitor who is involved in a project and knows well that he/she should pay a heavy price to achieve his/her goals may view the figures as happy creatures,” Vanaki said.

He then said this is his first exhibition, adding “I began my career as a sculptor about 15 years ago and during these years, I’ve made a number of statues which were put on display in a number of public places in Tehran including Azadi Stadium, Jashnvareh Street, Sa’adabad Palace, among others.”

Vanaki went on to say that “for several reasons, I decided to showcase my statues in a gallery instead of public centres. To me, in galleries, the visitors have enough time and concentration to think about the message of each piece. In our daily lives, we are usually too engaged in our daily problems to concentrate on artistic pieces which we may come across on the streets,” he noted.

Iran Criticizes Israeli PM’s Visit to Oman

The criticism was raised by Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi in response to a question by reporters regarding a recent visit to Oman by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu along with a delegation, including Yossi Cohen, the director of the Mossad spy agency, and National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, arrived in Oman’s capital, Muscat, on Thursday night and flew back to the occupied Palestinian territories later on Friday, making it the first such meeting in over 20 years.

A joint statement by Netanyahu and Oman’s ruler Sultan Qaboos said the two sides “discussed ways to advance” the so-called Middle East peace process and “a number of issues of mutual interest to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.”

Muscat and Tel Aviv have no diplomatic relations, and the last Israeli leader to visit Oman was then-prime minister Shimon Peres in 1996.

According to Qassemi, Trump should have learned so far that the Islamic Republic is neither after occupying a place in the region nor invading any regional country.

“As things stand, Trump has mistaken Iran for another country or terrorist groups in the region. Iran has never invaded any foreign country over the past several hundred years and will never do so in the future. Iran had never occupied a regional country before Trump took office in 2016. We have adopted the same policy since then and will never change it in the future,” he said.

The spokesman then underlined that Iran’s principled and logical policy towards the region is completely transparent. “It goes without saying that Iran remains the same with its principled regional policy unchanged. It has never undergone any change since Trump took office.”

He once again stressed that Iran is seeking to fight against regional terrorism and extremism to create peace and security and promote economic and political developments in the whole region.

Iran’s presence in Syria comes at the official request of the Syrian government and the Iranian forces provide the Syrian army with military advice in fight against terrorist groups, he added.

“Iran has had no military presence in any other country and its presence in Syria is aimed at eradicating terrorism in the region,” he said.

He warned US officials not to further tarnish the US image in the world and jeopardize their country’s national interests and said “we advise Trump to learn from history and read it once again because people of the world can’t accept that the head of a country which proclaims to be the world’s superpower acts like him.”

Qassemi also underlined that Trump’s latest anti-Iran statements amount to wishful-thinking, and his dreams about Iran will never come true.

“The Islamic Republic will defend its legal rights and national interests against ill-wishing aggressors within international law and as a country committed to all global mechanisms and treaties. We will also stand by our ideals to back all regional states and nations interested in restoring peace and stability to the region through fighting terrorism and extremism.”

Iran Urges Other Countries to Respect ICJ’s Anti-US Ruling

Addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Gholamali Khoshroo called on the US “to implement the provisional measure, including refraining from measures such as wrongful sanctions which will aggravate the disputes.”

“Moreover, to help preserve the primary role of the International Court of Justice as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, other states are also expected to refrain from assisting the US in imposing any impediments in transactions involving specified items, which would amount to violation of the court’s order and would be tantamount to providing assistance to the wrongdoer,” the Iranian envoy added.

On October 3, the UN’s top court issued a ruling, reprimanding the US over its re-imposition of sanctions on Iran and ordering Washington to lift restrictive measures linked to humanitarian trade, food, medicine and civil aviation.

Khoshroo also commended “the judges and all members of the court for their unwavering commitment and sense of duty in upholding the rule of law at the international level.”

According to the verdict, Washington “shall remove by means of its choosing any impediments arising from the measures announced on May 8 to the free exportation to Iran of medicines and medical devices, food and agricultural commodities” as well as airplane parts.

The Hague-based court further said that sanctions on goods “required for humanitarian needs… may have a serious detrimental impact on the health and lives of individuals on the territory of Iran.”

In response to the ICJ ruling, Washington announced it would quit the 1955 treaty, which had established economic relations and consular rights between Tehran and Washington at the time it was signed between the countries.

Iran also argued that the US had violated the terms of the JCPOA, endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2231, by unilaterally pulling itself out of the nuclear agreement. The International Atomic Energy Agency has verified on numerous occasions that Iran has abided by the terms of the JCPOA.

It goes without saying that if Iran had shown immediate reaction to the journalist’s murder and joined the governments denouncing the crime, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman would use it as a pretext to downgrade the severity of the crime as far as two rival states in the regions were concerned. He would try to downgrade this almost unprecedented tragedy, which must only be the handiwork of reactionary fascists, to a normal incident that has happened during the course of soft war between two regional governments.

So one can say the Islamic Republic chose to remain silent and watch its arch-rival being disgraced by the entire world.

Still, the passive and delayed reaction of Iran’s diplomacy apparatus is a two-faced coin that can be criticized as well. Some politicians, especially those who are well aware of the true extent of the crimes committed by Saudi Arabia across the Middle East, aptly name the Saudi regime a parvenu dictator which has pinned its hopes on petro-dollars and the unflinching support of the US government, and which slaughters hundreds of persons like Khashoggi every day in the face of the deadly silence of powerful governments and major media outlets across the world. If we believe that the dismembered journalist was not once a journalist like a Yemeni or Syrian child, and that he was a human being in the first place, it will not be appropriate to hesitate to get on board with those who seek to bring to light those with Khashoggi’s blood on their hands.

Mohammad Saleh Jokar, a deputy commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), was among the major critics of the Foreign Ministry for its passive stance on Khashoggi’s murder.

The top commander said the murder created an opportunity to bring to light the crimes committed by Riyadh, and Iran should have gotten on board with other countries in revealing the true colours of the Saudi regime.

“Unfortunately, our diplomacy apparatus is not taking advantage of it (Khashoggi’s murder) well, but other countries are capitalizing on it very well in line with their interests,” he said.

“Our diplomacy apparatus should review the different dimensions of this crime and make the people of the world understand that the murder of Khashoggi was just one of thousands of crimes by the Al Saud regime, and that such crimes are being repeated in Yemen and other countries every moment,” said the top commander.

“The assassination of Khashoggi prompted Saudi rulers to take blind measures and, for example, put the name of [Major General] Qassem Soleimani and the IRGC on the list of supporters of terrorism to divert public opinion,” said Jokar in an interview with Mehr News Agency.

“Of course, such actions are not without precedent. The Americans have also adopted such measures before, and Saudi Arabia has followed suit and launched this psychological warfare in the region,” said the commander.

He said Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have put the names of general Soleimani and the IRGC on the lists of sponsors of terrorism.

“By assassinating Khashoggi, Saudi Araba has got bogged down in a quagmire, and that is why it does whatever it can to save itself,” said the top commander.

He then highlighted that the US and Saudi and Bahraini regimes have the blood of innocent people of Yemen, Bahrain and Syria on their hands.

“The murder of this journalist is just one of many crimes committed by Saudi Araba and its supporters that has received media attention, but we are witnessing innocent people being killed in Yemen and Bahrain every day. These regimes have always violated the rights of the regional nations and they do not believe in the principles of freedom and free thinking,” he noted.

He said the Al Khalifa and Al Saud regimes take inhumane actions under the support of the US.

As tweeted by Hamid Baeidijenad, Woody Johnson had already warned British companies over any violations of US sanctions, and while reiterating Washington’s stances said UK firms had to choose between working with Iran and working with the United States.

In his tweet, the Iranian diplomat described Johnson as “Mr. Trump’s ambassador to London,” saying, “This language of threat and force is blatant hypocrisy, especially when it comes from a businessman whose grandfather’s Johnson & Johnson (company) had been active in Iran for years, even when Iran was under sanctions.”

Baeidinejad said the United States is on the horns of a dilemma.

“It is the US that is in a dilemma; it should either keep discrediting itself by continuing to breach the Iran nuclear deal and international law, or return to the Iran nuclear deal and abide by an agreement that it has signed itself. There is no third option,” wrote the Iranian ambassador.

Johnson had said in a tweet on October 22 that, “Companies have a choice: Do business with #Iran or with the US – you can’t do both. Sanctions come into effect Nov 4.”

Back in August, Johnson wrote an article in the Sunday Telegraph, where he called on the UK to side with Trump on Iran or risk “serious trade consequences” for UK businesses.
