Iran Dismisses Pompeo’s ‘Groundless’ Accusations

“The United States and particularly, its current radical regime, due to its old hostility towards the Iranian nation and its opposition to all measures adopted by the previous (US) administration…, is following a path which cannot be expected to bear any benefit for the US,” Qassemi said in a Friday statement.

He said the US is following the path under the influence of notorious and defeated groups, deceived by certain currents and lobby groups.

The current US administration is desperate and angry because it cannot find a replacement for a “comprehensive and legitimate” nuclear agreement it has scrapped unilaterally, he said, stressing that the JCPOA was a result of negotiation.

Qassemi further criticized the US’ “paradoxical” stance on Iran and said Washington has maximized its hostility towards the Iranian nation while at the same time, it hypocritically pretends to support negotiations with Tehran.

“Mr Pompeo once again clearly announced the US regime is an enemy of Iran, and this is nothing but hostility towards the Iranian nation.”

“He [Pompeo] should well know and understand that we will defend our national and strategic interests against the enemies of Iran and the Iranian nation with all our power,” he added.

“Iran has always demonstrated that it demands peaceful coexistence with its neighbours, but the US behaviour shows that it is seeking to sow discord and create new chaos in the region,” he added, highlighting the need for regional nations to remain vigilant in the face of the US officials’ deceit and divisive policies.

Speaking at the American University in Cairo on Thursday, Pompeo claimed that Iran is a “common enemy” of the US and other countries in the region.

“President Trump has reversed our willful blindness to the danger of the [Iranian] regime and withdrew from the failed nuclear deal, with its false promises,” he added.

The US state secretary said that his country was working to reverse Iran’s regional influence.

Iran’s Defence Spending in Spotlight: Teeny Budget Compared with Rivals’

An in-depth analysis of the budget shows the spending for many activities has been reduced, at a time when the US is bent on minimizing Iran’s revenues through efforts to hamper Iran’s foreign trade and oil sale.

In this bill, for the first time, the government has broken down the budget for some sectors to two parts.

The first part of the budget is fixed, while the other part will be allocated if the government’s predicted revenues are fully collected.

The new method has also covered the defence sector, leading to controversies among political and media circles.

According to the proposal, Iran’s military spending has been cut by 27%, compared to the 2017-2018 budget.

However, if all government revenues are met, this sector’s budget would have been increased by 21%.

Although some officials have welcomed the initiative, the possibility of a plunge in the defence sector’s share of the official spending has worried many.

Critics argued decreasing Iran’s defence budget makes no sense amid non-stop threats issued by US President Donald Trump, who has hardened his country’s line on Iran and controls dozens of military bases in Iran’s surroundings.

Put the US aside, critics say other adversaries of Iran have gone aggressive too, with the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman threatening to bring war against Iran inside the country and Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu openly threatening to destroy Iran.

Opponents also criticize the government for failing to allocate at least five percent of the annual budget to this sector, as the Sixth Development Plan (2016-2021) demands.

The criticism prompted members of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission to react, vowing to work to boost the defence sector’s share amid mounting threats.

Notably, Allaedin Boroujerdi, the former chairman of the commission, said the panel is against any decrease in defence budget.

“We believe that taking into account serious threats against [Iran] … Tehran should not only avoid decreasing its defence spending but it needs to increase it. We will do our best in the commission and the parliament to make that happen,” he said.

Pariah State?

Surprisingly, the Western media and politicians who are quick to jump at the chances to magnify divisions inside Iran, were largely silent on the defence budget controversies.

But this could be natural, as a sharp decrease in Iran’s military spending weakens the narrative of the anti-Iran propaganda machine that spares no chance to talk up Iran’s military might and its alleged threats to the region, as part of their government’s wider policy of framing Iran a pariah state.

In order to better grasp the situation, one only needs to look at numerous examples of the western media and politicians seeking to portray a caricature of the Iranian politics and show a scary image of the country.

Notably, Trump made a misleading claim about Iran’s military budget early May, saying it had increased by more than 40 percent since the negotiation of the Iran nuclear pact.

“Iran’s Military Budget is up more than 40% since the Obama-negotiated Nuclear Deal was reached…just another indicator that it was all a big lie. But not anymore!” Trump tweeted, as he announced the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Contrasting Realities

But had Iran’s military spending really increased that much?

Much to the frustration of anti-Iran fanatics who love to exaggerate Iran’s military activities, a close look at Iran’s military spending shows Iran is by no means dreaming to conquer the world.

According to statistics by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reporting countries’ military spending from 1988 to 2017, Iran’s military budget had increased by only about 30 percent from 2015, the year the Iran deal was reached, to 2017, the year Trump was referring to.

But putting this obvious mistake aside, Trump was missing an important context, failing to notice that looking at raw increase or decrease in any country’s military budget is not meaningful.

From 2015 to 2017, Iran’s military spending had increased alongside the overall government spending, not on its own.

Let’s consider Iran’s military expenditure as a share of overall government spending. In 2015, it accounted for 15.4% of the government spending, and in 2017, it accounted for %15.8, showing a 0.4 percentage point increase.

Looking at Iran’s defence expenditure as a share of GDP, there’s a similar trend: It has increased by only half a percentage point, going from 2.6 percent to 3.1 percent from 2015 to 2017.

The nuclear accord lifted sanctions and allowed for a rise in the oil export, enabling the government to go towards restoring budget levels of 2000s.

To be accurate, the 30-percent increase brought Iran’s military spending back to near-2006 levels.

Iran's Defence Spending in Spotlight: Teeny Budget Compared with Rivals'
A report comparing the 2017 military spending of Iran and its southern neighbours according to statistics by the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and IHS Janes is particularly illustrative.

What about Iran’s Rivals?

Trump was missing an even more important context, failing to mention the military spending of regional rivals Iran could come into conflict with.

In fact, Iran’s military budget has fallen short of individual regional rivals for decades, if not centuries.

According to SIPRI, at nearly $16 billion in 2017, Iran’s defence budget is teeny in comparison to its probable battlefield enemies: Israel’s $18.5 billion (plus $3.5 billion in military aid from the US); Saudi Arabia’s $76.7 billion; and the United States’ nearly $600 billion.

Moreover, military expenditure per capita reports put Iran $166 in 2017, ranking 53, while Saudi Arabia is at the top with over $2,100 dollar and Israel is second with more than $1,980.

Facts Talk

Looking at facts, Iran’s budget has decreased significantly compared to the last year, taking into account the sharp devaluation of the Iranian currency in 2018.

In the 2017-2018 budget, Iran’s defence spending was nearly 618 trillion rials, or $16.2 billion based on an official exchange rate of around 38,000 rials for each dollar.

According to the government’s proposal, this year’s military spending would be nearly 515 trillion rials, or $8.5 billion based on dollar’s official exchange rate of around 60,000 rials.

Even if government revenues are fully collected, the budget would be around 715 trillion, or $11.9 billion.

So Iran’s budget is disproportionate to similar powers in the region, let alone world powers.

Is this the same apocalyptic government that the 31-year-old Saudi Crown Prince has described?

Next time you heard a wily politician or a wicked reporter saying things that make you feel Iran is preparing to launch its world domination projects, just remember these facts.

Tehran Urges Netherlands to Protect Iranian Diplomats, Embassy

The call by Alireza Jahangiri came after supporters of a terrorist group called Al-Ahvaziya attacked the Iranian embassy in The Hague on Wednesday afternoon.

The attackers gathered in front of the embassy building and chanted anti-Iran slogans and threw rocks and bottles. They also tried to climb the adjacent embassy building but were immediately arrested by the Dutch police.

According to one of the embassy diplomats, none of the embassy staff was hurt during the incident.

Meantime, the Dutch authorities regretted the attack and emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the security of the representative offices and embassy staff.

Al-Ahvaziya group is behind a terrorist attack on a military parade in Ahvaz in southwestern Iran which was staged concurrently with nationwide military parades in late September to mark the start of the Sacred Defense Week. Dozens of civilians, including a 4-year old boy were killed in the attack.

Iran to Send Two Satellites into Orbit: President Rouhani

Rouhani made the remarks during a ceremony held to commemorate the second passing anniversary of former president and chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in Tehran on Thursday.

Rouhani said, “Missiles are our defensive tool and we are proud of it,” adding, “In the coming weeks, we will send two new satellites into space using our domestically-built rockets.”

He also described Iran’s defense power and technology achievements as relics of Ayatollah Hashemi.

Last November, Deputy Defense Minister General Qassem Taqizadeh announced that Iran would launch three satellites into space “on various orbits” within a few months.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that Iran’s planned launch of space rockets and missiles breaches Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif dismissed Pompeo’s claim, saying Washington has already violated that resolution and thus cannot “lecture” Tehran on it.

The top Iranian diplomat was referring to Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in defiance of international objections.

Since its JCPOA exit, the administration of US President Donald Trump has unleashed its “toughest ever” sanctions against Iran. It has also warned of severe penalties for companies that evade the bans and engage in business dealings with the Islamic Republic.

Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said recently that new Iranian satellites had successfully passed pre-launch tests.

“A satellite with the resolution of 1,000 meters was due to be manufactured through international cooperation 10 years ago, but they (international partners) didn’t cooperate with Iran,” he tweeted.

“The program was changed and the production of a domestically-made satellite with a 25 times higher resolution was prolonged, but it was made to serve in agricultural, environmental and water management fields,” he added.

Iranian, Russian, Turkish Presidents to Meet in Moscow

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a special assistant to Iran’s foreign minister, said the three-way meeting will come to discuss regional issues and coordinate the policies and actions of the three countries.

“The rapid pace of developments and cooperation between Iran and Russia has made it all the more necessary for visits and exchanges of delegations between the two countries,” said the official, who is on a visit to Moscow.

“Iran, Russia and Turkey will sit down for talks as part of Astana negotiations in a couple of months,” he noted.

He said the next meeting between the heads of state of Iran, Russia and Turkey, which guarantee the trend of Asana talks, will be held in Russia. He said the exact timing of the meeting between the three presidents, namely Hassan Rouhani of Iran, Vladimir Putin of Russian, and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is not yet clear.

Several rounds of talks have so far been held in Astana to discuss key issues in the Arab world, especially ways of achieving peace in Syria.

Jaberi Ansari also pointed to his own visit to Russia, and said he will sit down with Russian Deputy Foreign Ministers Sergey Vershinin and Mikhail Bogdanov as well as the Russian president’s special envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev. He said he might also meet other Russian security and military officials during his trip.

“During this trip, the agenda of the talks revolve around the latest developments in Syria and the Arab world as well as relevant international developments,” he said.

Iran Diplomat Raps Europe for Harbouring Terrorists

Hamid Baeidinejad gave the warning on his Twitter page on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, European countries have turned into a safe haven not only for the hypocrites (a term usually used by Iran to refer to members of the MKO terrorist group), but also for the representatives of new terrorist and separatist groups that overtly seek to disintegrate Iran,” wrote the top diplomat in his tweet.

He said giving a free hand to these hated groups to engineer terrorist activities and disintegrate Iran is not regarded as an example of political freedom.

Baeedinejad’s remarks come amid the European Union’s imposition of sanctions on a number of Iranian nationals based on groundless allegations.

Also in late 2018, the Danish police, without presenting any evidence, accused elements allegedly linked to Iran of attacking a person in Denmark. Iran flatly denied the accusation.

The EU’s move triggered reaction by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. He wrote in a tweet that Europe itself is to blame for harbouring terrorists.

“The Europeans, namely Denmark, the Netherlands and France give refuge to the hypocrites, a group that murdered 12,000 Iranians and helped [former Iraqi strongman] Saddam Hussein in committing crimes against Kurds, and harbour other terrorists who, from Europe, mastermind the murder of innocent Iranians. Levelling accusations against Iran does not exonerate Europe from the responsibility of giving refuge to terrorists,” said the Iranian foreign minister.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi also condemned the EU’s move and said Iran will adopt the necessary measures in response to the move “within the framework of reciprocation.”

Iran Denies Reports about US Citizen’s Well-Being in Jail

In response to a question raised by reporters on Wednesday, Qassemi confirmed that American citizen Michael White has been arrested in Mashhad.
“An American citizen, named Michael White, was arrested recently in Mashhad and his arrest was immediately reported to the US government through the US Interests Section in Tehran,” he said.
Qassemi underlined that the US was informed on the arrest of White from the early hours of his detention.
The spokesman then dismissed the false reports by certain US media on suboptimal conditions of White’s detention and said over the past few days, the media have sought to spread [anti-Iran] propaganda, escalate the psychological war against Iran and disseminate targeted lies about Iran through unfounded reports on the allegedly poor well-being of the American citizen and his alleged harassment in detention.
“Such untrue and unfounded reports are categorically rejected,” he underlined.
The spokesman then underlined that the case of the American citizen is under investigation by the legal bodies and the Islamic Republic will release the results of the investigations in due time.
The New York Times first reported on Monday that US Navy veteran Michael White of California was arrested in July and imprisoned on a trip to Iran.
White’s mother told the New York Times that State Department officials had told her they were seeking access to her son via the Swiss consulate, as the US does not have formal diplomatic ties with Iran.
In another report on Tuesday, the CBS News claimed the 46-year-old had been in detention since last summer and “was suffering psychologically and was being held in a ward with dangerous criminals.”
