‘Reports of Attack on Hezbollah by Israel Baseless’

The Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen channel made the statement on Wednesday, referring to an Israeli air strike on arms depot west of Syria’s capital city of Damascus.

Syrian state media reported the country’s air defence “intercepted hostile targets” west of Damascus on Tuesday night.

There were reports of loud explosions through the Syrian capital and videos shared on social media showing Syrian missiles being fired into the sky.

There was no confirmation from Israel on the attack on Syria, but a report in the American weekly Newsweek said several senior Hezbollah officials were wounded in the alleged attack.

Citing a Defence Department source familiar with the details of the attack via senior Israeli representatives, the report said Israeli aircraft struck a few minutes after the officials got on board a plane to Iran.

The incident comes two days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the US military withdrawal from Syria will not affect Israel’s policy towards the war-torn country.

In an abrupt policy shift, US President Donald Trump announced last week that Washington would withdraw the roughly 2,000 US troops from Syria.

Israel has carried out lots of air raids on targets in Syria in recent years.

However, Israel had avoided carrying out attacks in Syria since October when Russia provided Syria with its S-300 air defence system.

Iran Oil Revenues Decreased 28 Percent in New Budget Proposal

“Oil revenues in this year’s budget were worth $27 billion, which will decline by 28 percent next year to $21 billion,” Nobakht told IRIB TV3 channel Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, President Hassan Rouhani said 1,425 trillion rials (33 percent) of Iran’s income will come from oil exports as he unveiled the budget of 4,700 trillion rials ($112 billion at the official exchange rate) for the new Iranian year.

He did not specify the average oil price assumed in the budget but officials have said the calculations were based on a forecast crude price of $50-$54 per barrel and exports of 1 to 1.5 million barrels per day.

Iran’s oil sector is facing new US sanctions which are said to shave off about 1 million barrels per day of its oil sales.

Eight major importers of Iranian crude oil have received US exemptions which will last up to 180 days since the sanctions came into effect in early November.

Chairman of India’s biggest state-owned crude oil refiner Indian Oil Corporation Limited Sanjiv Singh on Tuesday was quoted as saying that Iranian crude is extremely important for sustaining a balance in global oil trade.

India is the second largest customer of Iran’s oil and Singh said he hoped the US will extend the waiver after six months.

By continuing to buy from Iran, he said, India has also been able to sustain a balance in the market.

“In fact, India has played its card very well — while it has not buckled under the US sanctions, it has continued to get reasonable supply from Iran,” he said.

Senior officials in the government said India is likely to continue purchasing oil from Iran in 2019, although at lower levels than the previous year, the daily the Hindu Business Line said.

“New Delhi is expecting a positive result when the US reviews the waiver,” the paper said, citing government officials.

“India had extensive discussions with the US on the country’s oil economy and how getting reliable and cheap supply was essential for economic growth. We clearly communicated that till we have access to alternatives, we cannot bring down our imports from Iran sharply,” it cited an unnamed official as saying.

India and Iran, however, have yet to resolve the way in which payments have to be made for oil.

New Delhi is keen that the rupee payment mechanism will be used but alternative mechanisms, in which payments are made through currencies other than dollar, are also being examined.

President Rouhani said on Tuesday that Iran’s heavy reliance on oil revenues makes the country vulnerable to sanctions.

“If the private sector had been active in the country … and if the budget had not relied heavily on oil, the impact of sanctions would have been much less,” he said.

“If the structures had been healthy, I can claim that we could have had a budget without oil this year and last year,” the president added.

Through the sanctions, Rouhani said, the United States is pursuing two goals: to make the Iranian people lose hope in the establishment and the country and portray the system ineffective and not in control.

“No one can say that sanctions will not negatively affect the country’s economy and the lives of people, but nobody can say that America will achieve its goals,” he said.

Iranian Army to Hold Military Excercies Soon

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Major General Mousavi said the Army has plans to hold war games according to its operational and training purposes.

The drills, aimed at boosting the Army’s combat capabilities, will be staged by the current Iranian year’s end (March 20, 2019), the commander noted.

He said publicizing the news of the war games, to be held jointly by all of the Army units, would depend on the aims of the drills.

Iran’s Armed Forces hold routine military exercises throughout the year.

Iranian officials have repeatedly underscored that the country will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, including its missile power, which are entirely meant for defense, and that Iran’s defense capabilities will be never subject to negotiations.

Iran Condemns Terror Attack on Libyan Foreign Ministry

Bahram Qassemi

“The Libyan people can overcome the remnants of terrorism through unity, hard work, and national determination,” Qassemi said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We hope that in the near future, the world will witness more security and stability in Libya,” added the Iranian spokesperson.

Suicide attackers affiliated with ISIS targeted Libya’s foreign ministry building in the capital on Tuesday, killing at least three people including a senior civil servant, the authorities announced.

Ten other people were also injured in the “terrorist” attack.

The attackers began their assault with a car bomb, damaging vehicles and buildings, and then opened fire on the ministry, a security source said.

Two managed to get inside and blow themselves up, but the other was killed by ministry guards.

ISIS has been active in Libya in the turmoil since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Funeral Procession Held for Iranian Statesman

The procession was held after the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei led mass prayers for the body of the deceased cleric.

The ceremony was attended by the heads of the three branches of power, top governmental, clerical and the army officials, IRNA reported.

An official commemoration ceremony is to be held on Wednesday.

Ayatollah Shahroudi, who had spent over 40 years in politics, was also a key member of Iran’s Guardian Council for years.

His death received considerable attention and captured headlines in many news outlets. Wednesday was declared a day of national mourning in Iran.

His body is to be taken in a procession to the resting place, the holy shrine of Hazrat Massoumeh in the city of Qom near Tehran.

Iranian Christians Go New Year Shopping

The celebrations for the coming of 2019 were started in Iran and other countries on Monday, the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ (PBUH).

In a predominantly Muslim Iran, Armenian Christians represent one percent of the population.

The majority of Christians live in the capital Tehran.

The following are ISNA’s photos of streets in Christian neighbourhoods:

‘European Firms Planning to Establish Trade Ties with Iran’

Mohammad-Reza Bakhtiari, Deputy Chairman for International Affairs of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA), said implementation of the mechanism also known as Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) could pave the way for tangible progress in Iran’s commercial ties with the outside world.

On the impacts of the US sanctions and the timing of the SPV’s implementation, he said, it can’t be denied that the US President Donald Trump’s move to pull his country out of the nuclear deal has more or less hampered Iran’s ties with its foreign partners,” a report by ILNA said.

The official went on to say that following the US withdrawal from the deal, back in May, the world waited to see how deeply the first and second phases of sanctions could impact the Islamic Republic’s economy. “But in reality with the waivers granted for eight countries to continue purchasing Iran’s oil, the US sanctions have ended up in failure.”

Bakhtiari noted that many thought Iran’s economy would be paralysed by the US unilateral sanctions but “to our surprise, the Islamic Republic has managed to survive them.”

He then referred to the SPV and said implementation of the financial mechanism is naturally a great victory for Iran against the US sanctions.

Elaborating on the small and medium-sized European firms and their relations with Iran, he said the firms compose the economic driving force of Europe.

He added the details of the mechanism is not out yet, but it could be implemented following the New Year holidays.

Trump quitted the JCPOA in May because of what he claimed was Iran’s constant violations.

The first round of the bans was re-imposed in August. The US imposed the second round of sanctions against Iran in November.

Iran has vowed resistance against the economic pressure. It is now in talks with the other five remaining signatories to the deal to help keep the international agreement alive and blunt the impact of the returning US bans. The international opposition against the US and the market’s reliance on Iran’s oil has forced the White House to grant waivers for Tehran’s main oil customers.

Iran Leader Expresses Condolences over Bus Crash Tragedy in Tehran

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei issued the message of condolence on Tuesday over the terrible and tragic incident of a bus rollover crash at the Science and Research Branch of Islamic Azad University in northwestern Tehran.

The text of the message is as follows:

In the Name of God,

The tragic incident in which eight students were killed and a number of others were wounded is painful and regrettable.

I express my sincere condolences to the academic community of Iran and the bereaved families and relatives of those who lost their lives.

I beseech God Almighty to heal the wounded and I ask God for fortitude and reward for their bereaved relatives.

At least eight university students were killed and over 20 wounded after a bus went out of control and rolled over in the north of Tehran. Some officials claim the tragedy occurred after the bus driver suffered a heart attack behind the wheel. However, students of the university say the poor quality of the buses is to blame.

Latest report say that the number of victims has risen to nine with several ones in critical conditions.

Iran, Azerbaijan Call for Implementation of Joint Projects

During the Tuesday meeting, Iran’s top diplomat referred to the influence of parliamentary relations on the development of ties between the two nations and described the two sides parliamentarian ties as highly significant.

He also noted that political relations of the two countries are at the highest level thanks to the will of the two sides’ leaders.

“Despite a 40 percent increase in economic and trade ties between Tehran and Baku in the current year compared with the previous year, the relations short fall of the ideal level,” Zarif said.

However, Iran hopes the relations could expand further in the economic and trade fields by implementing joint projects and tapping into the capacities of transit corridors between the two sides, he added.

For his part, Azerbaijan’s parliament speaker described mutual relations as very good and important due to the historical, geographical and cultural commonalities between the two neighbours.

He then referred to the importance of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and called for completing the project. Ogtay said the corridor would have great mutual interests for both sides.

Heading a delegation, Asadov arrived in Tehran in a visit aimed at expanding parliamentarian relations between Iran and Azerbaijan Republic.
