Iran Leader Expresses Condolences over Bus Crash Tragedy in Tehran

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei issued the message of condolence on Tuesday over the terrible and tragic incident of a bus rollover crash at the Science and Research Branch of Islamic Azad University in northwestern Tehran.

The text of the message is as follows:

In the Name of God,

The tragic incident in which eight students were killed and a number of others were wounded is painful and regrettable.

I express my sincere condolences to the academic community of Iran and the bereaved families and relatives of those who lost their lives.

I beseech God Almighty to heal the wounded and I ask God for fortitude and reward for their bereaved relatives.

At least eight university students were killed and over 20 wounded after a bus went out of control and rolled over in the north of Tehran. Some officials claim the tragedy occurred after the bus driver suffered a heart attack behind the wheel. However, students of the university say the poor quality of the buses is to blame.

Latest report say that the number of victims has risen to nine with several ones in critical conditions.

Iran, Azerbaijan Call for Implementation of Joint Projects

During the Tuesday meeting, Iran’s top diplomat referred to the influence of parliamentary relations on the development of ties between the two nations and described the two sides parliamentarian ties as highly significant.

He also noted that political relations of the two countries are at the highest level thanks to the will of the two sides’ leaders.

“Despite a 40 percent increase in economic and trade ties between Tehran and Baku in the current year compared with the previous year, the relations short fall of the ideal level,” Zarif said.

However, Iran hopes the relations could expand further in the economic and trade fields by implementing joint projects and tapping into the capacities of transit corridors between the two sides, he added.

For his part, Azerbaijan’s parliament speaker described mutual relations as very good and important due to the historical, geographical and cultural commonalities between the two neighbours.

He then referred to the importance of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and called for completing the project. Ogtay said the corridor would have great mutual interests for both sides.

Heading a delegation, Asadov arrived in Tehran in a visit aimed at expanding parliamentarian relations between Iran and Azerbaijan Republic.

UAE Releases Images of Missing Princess

Back in March, Latifa said in a video posted online that she was fleeing the UAE because she had been tortured and detained following her failed attempt to leave the country in 2002.

“If you are watching this video, it is not such a good thing. Either I’m dead or I’m in a very, very, very bad situation,” she said. “They are not going to take me back alive.”

However, she was seized from a yacht off the coast of India by commandos and has not been heard from since.

A source close to the Dubai government confirmed in April that the princess had been “brought back” to Dubai.

Fearing for the safety of the young princess, Latifa’s friends and human rights groups have urged the UAE to reveal her whereabouts.

On Monday, the UAE’s Foreign Ministry published three low-resolution photos dated December 15, showing Latifa alongside the former UN high commissioner for human rights and Irish president Mary Robinson.

“Photographs taken during the afternoon they spent together have been shared, with their consent. During her visit to Dubai, Mary Robinson was reassured that Her Highness Sheikha Latifa is receiving the necessary care and support she requires,” the ministry said.

The ministry also claimed that the pictures refute allegations of Latifa’s disappearance.

“The communiqué responds to and rebuts false allegations and provided evidence that Her Highness Sheikha Latifa was at home and living with her family in Dubai,” the ministry said.

Tehran Calls for Enhancement of Ties with Baku

In a meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan Ogtay Asadov in Tehran on Tuesday, Rouhani stressed the need for the enhancement of relations between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan in industry, pharmaceuticals production, science and technology.

Pointing to the plans for mutual cooperation between the two neighbors on using energy resources of the Caspian Sea, the president expressed hope for the accelerated implementation of the agreement, which he described as a win-win deal that would serve the interests of the two nations.

He further reiterated the call for negotiated and political solutions to the regional conflicts, voicing Iran’s readiness to help settle regional conflicts within political frameworks and by respecting the rights of nations.

For his part, the visiting Azeri parliamentarian emphasized the need for expansion of trade and economic cooperation between Tehran and Baku.

Asadov also hailed Iran’s stances on regional and international developments and its support for the sovereignty of its neighbouring states, saying the region’s conflicts could be resolved by the regional countries alone.

Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various areas.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev has made several official visits to Tehran over the past few years.

In one of the trips in 2016, the two sides signed eleven memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of fields.

Iran, Russia Must Increase Military Cooperation

“The success of the countries’ armed forces in combating terrorism in Syria and defeating Takfiri terrorists and their supporters in the region demonstrates Iran and Russia’s determination and capacities to counter threats,” Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said Tuesday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the deputy chief of the Russian Army General Staff, Vice-Admiral Igor Osipov, in Tehran.

“The geopolitical and geo-strategic capacities of Iran and Russia make it necessary that the two countries’ armed forces adopt a long-term view and pave grounds for cooperation and plan to boost cooperation within the agreements made in the joint military commission,” he said.

For his part, the Russian general presented a report on the formation of the joint military commission of the two countries.

Pointing to historic relations between Iran and Russia, Osipov said there are ample opportunities to boost cooperation between the two countries.

In a separate meeting, Osipov held talks with Commander of the Iranian Army’s Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi, exploring grounds for closer cooperation between the two sides.

Heading a delegation from the Russian Defence Ministry, Osipov arrived in the Iranian capital on Monday for the joint military commission.

Tehran Hosts Exhibition of Paintings on Integrity of Power, Militarism

“Similar to his previous collections, the new collection of works by Amir-Hossein Zanjani presented a painterly narrative of the image of power by reporting militarism in his new series of works, which is the simultaneous representation of power and desperation,” a statement released on the exhibition said.

“With expressionistic brushstrokes and colours, he depicted obvious and concealed figures in military clothes; however, some of these figures were dominant and triumphant while others seem to be defeated. In this collection, Zanjani made us encounter the contrast and division between figures in uniforms. He also made us question the integrity of power. He seemed to be referring to a relation hidden behind a veil of militarist authority that has compromised its unity and integrity, divided into two groups.”

Amir-Hossein Zanjani was born in 1980 in Isfahan. He is a painting graduate from the University of Tehran. In his paintings, he mainly deals with social issues with political and historical references, while human is always the main focus of his works.

Zanjani was rewarded by the Celeste prize, presented by an international community of art professionals. in 2011 and received a scholarship from the Siena Art Institute.

He was selected as the painter of the Year of Asia in 2013, and his works were featured at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Singapore. His works are kept in several private collections in the Middle East, Europe and North America.

The “Marching” exhibition came to an end on December 14.

Iranian President Offers Congratulations on Christmas

Wishing a year full of happy moments for nations and governments, Rouhani said he hopes the New Year would see greater efforts to bring peace and justice.

“On the eve of the New Year, I hope that by taking advantage of the teachings of divine prophets and through solidarity and empathy we could work to spread peace based on justice,” he said.

He also hoped for security, calm, prosperity and equality across the globe.

In a separate message to the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, Rouhani said he hopes the guidelines of religious intellectuals and scholars and cooperation among world leaders will lead to create prosperity and calm across the world.

Expressing sympathy over the demise of the grand cleric, Ayatollah Khamenei said the death of the distinguished cleric is a great regret for those who knew him.

“He was a great master at the Qom seminary, a loyal servant at the most important bodies of the Islamic Establishment, an influential member of the Guardian Council and a successful head of the expediency council who published numerous scientific books,” he said.
