Leader: Terror Groups Trying to ‘Contaminate’ Iran-Pakistan Ties

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a Monday meeting with the visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his accompanying delegation in Tehran.

“Terrorist groups, which sow insecurity along borders, are fed with the enemies’ money and weapons and one of the goals sought through anti-security measures along Iran’s border with Pakistan is to contaminate the two countries’ relations,” the Leader noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei continued by emphasizing that good relations between Tehran and Islamabad are beneficial to both sides, “but these relations have serious enemies, which despite their will, cooperation and contacts [between Iran and Pakistan] must be strengthening in various sectors.”

Explaining about the historical backdrop of the two countries’ relations, the Leader noted that the Indian subcontinent reached the acme of its progress and dignity under the rule of Muslims.

“The biggest blow dealt to this important region by the British colonialists was to annihilate the prominent Islamic civilization that existed there,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated.

During the meeting, which was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the Pakistani premier explained about his negotiations in Tehran, saying, “Many problems were solved through these negotiations and Pakistani ministers held good talks with their Iranian counterparts.”

Khan stated that there are certain hands at work to prevent Tehran and Islamabad from getting close, adding, “We try to make relations between the two countries stronger than before and we will maintain continuous contacts with the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Confirming the Leader’s remarks on India, the Pakistani prime minister said the British colonialists plundered all the wealth of India, destroyed its education system and made India the crown jewel of their colonial rule.

Earlier in the day, the Pakistani premier held talks and attended a joint press conference with the Iranian president.

‘US Waivers for Iran Oil Imports Have No Credit’

In a statement on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said given the illegal nature of the US sanctions, the Islamic Republic of Iran has not considered and will not consider any value or credit for waivers granted [to customers of the Iranian oil] on [US] sanctions.

However, he added, considering the negative impacts these sanctions have in practice and the possibility of further intensification of these negative impacts following the US refusal to renew the waivers, the Iranian foreign ministry today has been constantly in touch with all relevant institutions inside the country while holding intensive talks with many of its foreign partners including the Europeans, the neighbours, and other countries in the world.

“The result of these contacts and consultations with Iranian and foreign officials has been reported to the highest decision-making authorities, and an appropriate decision on the issue will soon be taken and made public,” he added.

In a statement issued on Monday, the White House said US President Donald Trump has decided not to renew waivers that allow eight countries to buy Iranian oil without facing Washington’s sanctions.

The White House said that the US president would not reissue Significant Reduction Exceptions (SREs) when they expire in early May, a move aimed at bringing Iran’s oil exports to zero.

“The United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates … along with our friends and allies, are committed to ensuring that global oil markets remain adequately supplied,” the White House statement said, adding, “We have agreed to take timely action to assure that global demand is met as all Iranian oil is removed from the market.”

Iran Working on Bill to Let Mothers Pass Their Nationality to Children

That was announced by Iranian First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri at the National Women and Science Festival on Monday.

“Earlier, it was only possible to grant Iranian citizenship to children whose fathers were Iranian, but recently we have sent a bill to the parliament that would enable children to receive nationality from their Iranian mothers as well,” he said.

He said late prominent Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani insisted that her child have Iranian nationality. He said the bill was presented to the parliament out of respect for Iranian women, adding, “We hope the bill will pass through Parliament.”

Currently, children in Iran acquire nationality of the country through their fathers, but not their mothers. The full nationality law is defined in Book 2 of the Civil Code of Iran, Articles 976 through 991.

Article 976 of the Civil Code of Iran defines who is an Iranian national:

  • All persons residing in Iran except those whose foreign nationality is established; the foreign nationality of such persons is considered to be established if their documents of nationality have not been objected to by the Iranian Government.
  • Those born in Iran or outside whose father is Iranian.
  • Those born in Iran of unknown parentage.
  • Persons born in Iran of foreign parents, one of whom was also born in Iran.
  • Persons born in Iran of a father of foreign nationality who have resided at least one more year in Iran immediately after reaching the full age of 18; in other cases their naturalization as Iranian subjects will be subject to the stipulations for Iranian naturalization laid down by the law. New legislation passed by the Iranian Parliament in 2012 grants permanent residency to children born to Iranian mothers and foreign fathers.
  • Every woman of foreign nationality who marries an Iranian husband.
  • Every foreign national who has obtained Iranian nationality.

According to Article 979 of the Civil Code of Iran, people can obtain Iranian nationality under following conditions:

  • Have reached the full age of 18.
  • Have resided five years, whether continuously or intermittently, in Iran.
  • Are not deserters from military service.
  • Have not been convicted in any country of non – political major misdemeanours or felonies.

Iran Congratulates Ukraine on Holding Elections Successfully

“The huge number of votes Mr Zelensky won in the recent presidential elections shows the trust Ukrainian people have in him, and the great social capital he enjoys,” Mousavi said in a Monday statement.

He also expressed hope that the latest developments would result in further success and prosperity for the Ukrainian people and leaders in the future, and in establishment of calm and sustainable peace in the country and the region.

Mousavi also hoped that the election of Mr Zelensky would lead to expansion of bilateral relations between the Iranian and Ukrainian nations.

Zelensky, a comedian with no political experience, has become Ukraine’s president after a landslide victory in Sunday’s election.

With 95 per cent of votes counted on Monday morning, the 41-year-old had taken 73 per cent of the vote, with just under 25 per cent for incumbent Petro Poroshenko.

Mr Zelensky’s win caps an extraordinary rise to power for an actor who only announced his plans to run for office in a New Year’s eve comedy show.

At an event broadcast live on Facebook, Mr Zelensky hugged and thanked supporters, telling them: “I promise I will never betray you.”

In comments seemingly directed at neighbouring Russia, he added: “To all the countries of the former Soviet Union, look at us . . . everything is possible.”

Easter Sunday Celebrated at Tehran’s Saint Gregory Church

This year the Orthodox churches celebrate Easter on the same Sunday when Roman Catholics and Protestants mark the holy festival.

What follows are IRNA’s photos of the ceremony:

Iran, Pakistan to Form Joint Rapid Reaction Force at Common Borders

The decision was made public at a joint news conference by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan in Tehran.

During the, presser Rouhani said the Islamic Republic and Pakistan are resolute to develop bilateral relations, and that, no third country can influence their ties. He also noted that the two countries are determined to increase the security of their joint borders by launching the Rapid Reaction Force to confront terrorists.

For his part, the Pakistani prime minister underlined that his country will not allow any militant group to operate from its soil.

Imran Khan is on an official two-day visit to Iran. This is his first trip to the Islamic Republic since he came to power last year.

Relations between Iran and Pakistan have soured in recent months, with both countries accusing each other of not doing enough to eradicate militants sheltering across the border. Tehran says militant groups operate from the Pakistani soil and has repeatedly called on Islamabad to clamp down on them.

Tehran has also beefed up security along its long border with Pakistan after a suicide bomber killed nearly 30 members of the IRGC in mid-February. Iranian officials said the attackers were based inside Pakistan.

Pakistani PM Officially Received by Iran President in Tehran

The ceremony took place at the Sa’adabad Palace in northern Tehran. Following the ceremony, the Iranian President and the Pakistani Premier sat down for talks on the expansion of bilateral relations and economic and cultural issues.

The Pakistani prime minister, who arrived in Iran on Sunday, had a brief stop-over in the holy city of Mashhad before leaving for Tehran.

While in Mashhad, Imran Khan met with local officials and paid a visit to the holy shrine of the eighth Shiite Imam.

This is Imran Khan’s first visit to Iran after taking office as Pakistan’s prime minister in 2018.

Imran Khan is accompanied by a high-ranking entourage consisting of several ministers. During his two-day stay, Khan is expected to meet with the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

US Retreats from Threat to Penalize Any Business with IRGC

The exemptions, granted by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and described by a State Department spokesman in response to questions from Reuters, mean officials from countries such as Iraq who may have dealings with Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps would not necessarily be denied US visas.

The exceptions to US sanctions would also permit foreign executives who do business in Iran as well as humanitarian groups working in regions such as northern Syria, Iraq and Yemen, to do so without fear they will be punished.

However, the US government also created an exception to the carve-out, retaining the right to sanction any individual in a foreign government, company or NGO who themselves provides “material support” to a US-designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO).

On April 8, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington is designating the IRGC a foreign “terrorist organization”, marking the first time the US has formally labeled another country’s military a terrorist group.

Responding to the move, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council immediately declared the US as a state sponsor of terrorism and US forces in the region terrorists.

The SNSC said it has put CENTCOM on its terror list as a “reciprocal measure” against the US “illegal and unwise” move.

The move has caused problems for foreigners who deal with the IRGC, and for US diplomats and military officers in Iraq and Syria, whose interlocutors may work with the IRGC.

It created confusion among US officials who initially had no guidance on how to proceed and on whether they were still allowed to deal with such interlocutors, three US officials said.

American officials have long said they fear the designation could endanger US forces in places such as Syria or Iraq.
