Saudi Arabia Halts Umrah Visa Services

Saudi sources quoted the kingdom’s Ministry of Hajj and Umra as announcing on Tuesday that it has halted visa services for the Umrah pilgrims.

The Saudi ministry has not mentioned any reason for the new decision.

The Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca performed by Muslims. Unlike the Hajj, which is also known as the “major Hajj pilgrimage”, it can be undertaken at any time of the year.

In 2016, more than 1.8 million pilgrims attended Hajj, but Iranians stayed at home after tensions between Riyadh and Tehran boiled over following a deadly crush of people during the 2015 pilgrimage.

On September 2, 2015, thousands of people lost their lives in the deadly crush after Saudi authorities blocked a road in Mina during a ritual, forcing large crowds of pilgrims to collide.

The crush marked the deadliest incident in the history of the pilgrimage.

Saudi Arabia claims nearly 770 people were killed, but officials at Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization say about 4,700 people, including over 460 Iranian pilgrims, lost their lives.

Talks with US to End Up with Surrender, IRGC Chief Warns

“Our resistance is based on logic, because there is war, loss of power and surrender behind the logic of negotiations,” Major General Hossein Salami said in an address to an academic gathering in Tehran on Tuesday.

“We are close to victory, and our only solution is resistance in accordance with our national and revolutionary expediency,” the commander noted.

Iran has effectively foiled the enemy’s plans for military action, the general stressed, warning that the adversaries insist on negotiations in order to impair Iran’s deterrent power.

Diplomacy without power is meaningless, the general added, stating that backing off from resistance would encourage the enemy to intensify the pressure of sanctions.

“The enemy’s greatest wish is to dismantle part of our defence power,” he went on to say.

“Today, the US is not able to make correct political choices and its mechanism of turning the military power into political power has broken down,” he concluded.

In comments last week, Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei highlighted the necessity for strong resistance in confrontation with the enemies, stressing that the Islamic Republic will keep making progress provided that the US does not come any close to Iran.

The Leader also described the ultimate goal of resistance as reaching the “deterrence point” in the economic, political, social and military spheres.

Deterrent power dissuades the enemy from aggression against Iran in all arenas, the Leader noted, saying Iran has already reached the deterrent point in the military field.

The enemies have focused on Iran’s missile power, because they know that Tehran has gained the deterrent power in this area and seek to deprive the Islamic Republic of such capability, “but they will never be able to do that,” Ayatollah Khamenei underscored.

Iran Urges Regional Coordination for Talks with Taliban

In an address to a 6-party meeting of high-ranking security officials in the Russian city of Ufa on Tuesday, Shamkhani stressed the need for a concerted approach among the neighbours of Afghanistan for talks with the Taliban, in coordination with the Afghan government.

The meeting was attended by top security officials from Iran, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Shamkhani also offered Iran’s proposals for the structure, time, agenda, and mechanisms of effectual activities by the neighbours of Afghanistan for the establishment of national reconciliation in that country.

“It is necessary for the neighbours of Afghanistan to increase contacts and connections with the Afghan opposition in coordination with the country’s legitimate government, and also to restrict the possibility of interference from the extra-regional states in that country’s crisis,” he added.

Shamkhani also voiced concern about growing political gaps in Afghanistan, urging constant cooperation among the neighbours of Afghanistan in order to “strengthen the legal structures” on the basis of public votes and collective partnership.

Shamkhani has travelled to Ufa to take part in the 10th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev.

The forum has been held regularly by the Russian Security Council in one of the cities of Russia each year. The meetings have been previously held in the cities of Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Kazan, Ulan-Ude, Grozny, the Tver region, and twice in Sochi.

Last year’s conference in Sochi was attended by delegates from 118 countries and three delegations from the UN bodies.

Iran Is the One Preserving Regional Security: First VP

Jahangiri said the recent oil tanker attacks were carried out after Iran withdrew its forces from the Persian Gulf for a short while.

“As far as Iran was present in the region, no one dared to undermine the security in the Persian Gulf or the Sea of Oman and the recent attacks were carried out while Iran was not present in the region,” he was quoted as saying in a report by dolat.ir.

He added it is falsely believed that this is Saudi Arabia or the UAE or Bahrain which provide the region’s security but “in fact this is Iran which is behind even these countries’ security.”

He then referred to the US call for talks with Iran and said the main question is how and on what issues, they should sit for talks.” Even if we make an agreement, there is no guarantee that the American side won’t violate it once again.”

Jahangiri said Iran has always called for talks based on mutual respect and within a logical framework and added “if you hold talks with Iran based on respect, your problems would be resolved soon but we don’t allow you to talk with the language of threat, disrespect and violation with a nation that has such a long history like Iran.”

The US and its allies accused Iran of carrying out the recent attacks on two oil tankers in the Sea of Oman. Iran has vehemently denied the accusations and called the attacks “suspicious”.

Iran, Iraq Discuss Expansion of Regional Cooperation

During the Tuesday meeting, the two officials discussed the deep-rooted mutual ties between the two nations of Iran and Iraq as well as the significant agreements the two sides have signed in economic areas.

They also exchanged views on the facilities provided for Iranian and Iraqi people for reciprocal visits and the two sides’ support for each other amid harsh conditions.

Zarif and al-Haddad further conferred on the role of Iran-Iraq cooperation in preserving regional peace and stability and the latest regional developments.

Back in April, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran and Iraq are keen to expand their cooperation in the fight against terrorism and smuggling while seeking stronger ties in the power, gas and oil sectors.

“Border cooperation to fight terrorism, narcotics and smuggling will become stronger between the two countries,” Rouhani said at a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi in Tehran on April 6.

The Iraqi prime minister, for his part, said Iran had played a leading role in the fight against terrorism and the promotion of peace and stability in Iraq and called for further development of mutual relations.

Russia Says Ties with Iran Source of Regional Stability

Novak made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting with Iran’s Energy Minister Reza Ardekanian in Isfahan.

The Russian minister said the two sides attach great importance to further development of ties, and views Tehran as its significant and long-time partner.

“The two sides are now involved in the Green Corridor project aimed at streamlining customs procedures which can play a key role in the development of their ties,” he said, according to a report by dolat.ir.

For his part, Iranian energy minister underlined that during the fifteenth meeting of the Joint Commission of Iran and Russia in Tehran, the two sides agreed to accomplish the executive operation of electricity generation project of Garmsar-Incheh Borun railway line within the next two months.

He went on to say that the two sides have held constructive talks in various areas including electricity generation for Garmsar-Incheh Borun rail line.

He then referred to an agreement signed between Iran and the five members of the Eurasian Economic Union on free trade and said the agreement is set to be approved by Iran’s Guardian Council soon.

The free trade zone is planned to be in effect for four years, under which the EAEU will grant Iran tariff concessions on more than 500 items.

“We have also reached some agreements in the medicine area to expand our ties by 2021. So far the two sides have already called for registration of drugs for rare diseases,” he said.

Ardakanian then said the two sides have also discussed ways to remove banking problems and expressed hope that the problems are removed in the near future.

“To this end, the two sides will hold some working group meetings to exchange views on various aspects of the problems,” he said.

Mursi Remembered as Egypt’s Only Democratically-Elected Leader

Mohamed Mursi came to power as a result of a Twitter and Facebook revolution or what some call the Arab Spring or Islamic Awakening.

He replaced dictators who for decades ruled over the Egyptian people, and some called him a Moses who took the place of Pharaoh.

His legitimate democratic government did not last for more than a year, however, and the military once again dismissed him by a coup on the pretext of defending the rights of the people who opposed him.

Mohamed Mursi was not an ideal president, writes Mohammad-Reza Norouzpour in an article for Khabar Online.

“He made a lot of mistakes. His domestic and foreign policy was not defendable. When he took the majority of people to the polls to support the Islamists, it was a bad test and he blamed it on the Islamists,” he added.

“But one thing is certain. Through him the Egyptian people once and for all enjoyed the taste of democracy, albeit acrid and premature.”

Iran Gives Details of Disbanding US Cyber Espionage Networks

Intelligence

In comments on Tuesday, director general of the counterespionage department of the Intelligence Ministry said the Islamic Republic has dealt the “first global blow to the American espionage network” in the cyber-space.

The official said more details of the new attack on the hostile network will be released in the near future.

In another operation in recent months, the official added, the Iranian intelligence forces dealt a blow to a new network of the US spies.

A detailed description of the operations and the evidence of activities of the CIA spies in foreign countries will be published after judicial processes, the official said.

“The US espionage network includes a considerable number of professional CIA spies who have received a blow in the recent attack from the Intelligence Ministry of the Islamic Republic and its global allies,” the official said, adding that the spies involved in the case are regarded as “premium sources” by the CIA, because of their close cooperation with the US spy agency and the information they had been providing.

Highlighting the counterespionage activities of the Intelligence Ministry at the international level, the official said Iran uses the “capacities of other allied (intelligence) services” in the battle against the US.

He also said Iran’s success to uncover Washington’s international cyberespionage network not only prevented hostile intelligence measures against Tehran, but also disrupted a remarkable part of the global intelligence activities of the United States.

The Americans take advantage of the cyber-space to act against Iran and also to contact their spies across the world through safe communication systems, the official said, s noting that the Iranian forces managed to penetrate into the US cyberespionage systems, which operate under the guise of social, health or athletic websites.

“Detection of the spies was not confined to Iran alone, although Persian websites were also among those sites,” the intelligence official stated, adding that a number of the spies were identified as Iranians committing treason and cooperating with the CIA from inside the country deliberately.

Some of those Iranian nationals were brought to justice, while a number of others were used as an “opportunity” and employed for infiltration into the US cyberespionage network, the official added.

The director general explained that the US tried to retrieve all of the spies and bring them out of different countries after realizing the blow from Iran, which resulted in the termination of the network.

The spies working for the CIA used to cover various industrial, military, cyber, economic and infrastructural spheres, the official noted, adding that Americans have described the blow as a defeat that resulted in the shutdown of their plans.

Americans have explicitly described their failure as “an utter global crash, an intelligence scandal, and America’s biggest intelligence defeat after the September 11 (attacks) that has inflicted hundreds of billions of dollars in costs and loss on them,” the Iranian official concluded.
