Iran, UK Discuss Bilateral Ties, Yemen Crisis

UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Dominic Raab held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday evening.

In the conversation, the two ministers discussed the latest developments concerning the bilateral ties and implementation of the JCPOA, a series of consular affairs between the two countries, the ongoing developments in the region, particularly the situation in Yemen, as well as the other issues of mutual interest.

Political tensions between Iran and the UK grew recently after the British Royal Navy captured an Iranian supertanker in the international waters off the coasts of Gibraltar in early July.

Two weeks later, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy captured British oil tanker Stena Impero in Iran’s southern waters because the UK vessel had switched off its GPS locator, in contravention of international regulations, and was sailing into the Strait of Hormuz in a wrong traffic pattern.

The British tanker was entering the strait from the southern route which is an exit path, increasing the risk of an accident.

Iran Confirms Taliban Delegation’s Visit

In their visit to Iran, the Taliban political delegation held talks and exchanged views with relevant Iranian authorities on the latest developments of Afghanistan, Mousavi said on Tuesday.

Mousavi’s comments came after a report that members of Taliban’s Qatar-based political bureau have visited Iran following their trip to Moscow.

The delegation has reportedly conferred with a number of political and foreign ministry officials of Iran on the Afghan peace talks, the intra-Afghan negotiations, and the breakdown of US-Taliban negotiations.

A senior Taliban leader in Qatar had earlier said, “The purpose of these visits is to inform leaders of these countries about the peace talks and [US] President [Donald] Trump’s decision to call off the peace process at a time when both sides had resolved all outstanding issues and were about to sign a peace agreement.”

US President Donald Trump cancelled high-level talks with the group last week, citing a deadly bomb blast in Kabul that also left an American soldier dead.

“They thought that to kill people in order to put themselves in a little better negotiating position when they did that they killed 12 people … And you can’t do that can’t do that with me. So they’re dead as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Russia Hosting ‘Beautiful Iran’ Photo Exhibition

Photo of Tehran's Tabiat Bridge by Ebrahim Safi

The exhibition features about 40 works by contemporary Iranian artists such as Seyyed Ali Miremadi, Mohammad Reza Momeni, Hamid Hashemi, Ebrahim Saafi, etc.

Snow-capped peaks of northern Iran, night-time views of Tehran, and tombs of classical Persian poets have been displayed in these photographs.

The exhibition is being held with the support of the Iran’s Embassy in Russia. The Congress of Persian-speaking Ethnic Groups will also be held in collaboration with Nizhny Novgorod Regional Social Organisation.

On the sideline of this event, Persian language workshops are being held as well.

Iran is one of the most ancient countries in the world with rich history and traditional cultures.

What follows are Mehr News Agency’s photos of the exhibition, which will run through September 22:

Iran Demands Official Apology from Canada over Sale of Its Assets

The demand was made in a Tuesday statement, the full text of which follows.

More than three centuries on since the birth of the idea of a modern government and the acceptance of this principle in international law that governments possessing exclusive domestic eligibility and sovereignty are equal and that all world governments enjoy the right to sovereignty, the Canadian government’s move to try the Iranian government in its own courts under the pretext of breaching human rights and supporting terrorism, and the seizure and sale of the Iranian assets in that country, are, to all appearances, a mockery of the definitive principles of international law and governments’ right to sovereignty. Canada’s move adopted with reference to the “Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act” adopted in the country back in 2012 allows citizens of this country to call for the seizure and sale of Iran’s property in order to pay damages to so-called victims of terrorism. Canada’s move to confiscate and sell Iran’s property run counter to the basic principles of international law and principle of governments’ sovereignty. This action is in breach of the State Immunity Act, war on terrorism and human rights. They claim that countries’ sovereignty and independence are not referable to human rights, and that governments can ignore a country’s independence and sovereignty due to rights issues, and it is with the same mentality that the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act was ratified in Canada. Canada, which has always tried to pressure the Islamic Republic of Iran in international circles under the pretext of violating human rights, has decided to sell Iranian assets at a time when its own hands are stained with blood for breaching the rights of native people of this land, and it should be accountable for its crimes. By comparing these contradictory behaviour patterns with regards to human rights by international institutions and Western countries such as Canada, whose behaviour is even devoid of the basic principles of international law and human rights, and given that these countries even consider the idea of human rights as pointless at the theoretical level and inside their own legal systems, one should acknowledge that by looking at the issue of human rights at both theoretical and practical levels, we can find conclusive evidence to prove the claim that the concept of human rights and war on terror is nothing more than a modern tool in the hands of hegemonic powers to advance their policies.

The Justice Ministry’s Human Rights and International Affairs Department condemns this move by the Canadian government, which is against human rights and international law, and demands immediate return of Iranian assets and an official apology from the Canadian government.

Doors of Dialogue with Regional States Always Open: Iran

Iran Vows Appropriate Response to US Interception of Mahan Air Flight

“Our proposal for dialogue with regional countries is still on the table in various forms – either in the form of a Dialogue Forum in the Persian Gulf or through the non-aggression treaty signed among regional countries individually or collectively, proposed by Foreign Minister Zarif,” Mousavi said.

“Despite the developments unfolding in the region, we still stress that the region belongs to the regional countries; the region’s security is dependent on regional states, and the source of insecurity is the presence of ultra-regional forces here,” he told a press briefing on Monday.

“Therefore, we believe Iran and regional countries deserve more than any other country and individual to defend the region, maintain the region’s peace, stability, and security.”

Mousavi said Iran has always, and under any circumstances, made its neighbours the priority, even though they sometimes suffer from misunderstandings under the influence of enemy’s psy-wars.

“However, the doors are open for dialogue between Iran and regional states which are our brothers and Muslim countries, even though they have disagreements with us. We always defend and welcome this stance,” he noted.

24 Killed as Car Bomb Targets Afghan President’s Campaign

“Women and children are among them and most of the victims seems to be the civilians. Ambulances are still operating, and the number of casualties may rise,” said Abdul Qasim Sangin, head of the provincial hospital.

Ghani was present at the time of the explosion but is safe and unharmed, his campaign spokesman, Hamed Aziz, was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.

Wahida Shahkar, spokeswoman for the provincial governor in Parwan, said the explosion happened at the entrance to the venue.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Across Afghanistan, attacks have continued as the country prepares for presidential elections later this month.

Russia Will Make Every Effort to Save JCPOA: Putin

“Moscow’s firm stance is to preserve the JCPOA and it will work toward that end,” said Putin in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Ankara on Monday.

He said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities is the most important evidence that shows Iran has complied with its obligations.

Putin further said his country remains committed to continuing its cooperation with Iran on defence, military and nuclear fronts.

He noted Iran plays a significant role in resolving regional issues, especially in promoting a political mechanism to resolve the Syria crisis, fighting terrorist groups and forming a committee to deal with the Constitution in the country.

The Iranian president, in turn, described the JCPOA as a key and international agreement and the symbol of resolving issues diplomatically.

“Now that the US has withdrawn from the deal for no good reason, the other parties to the talks, especially, Russia, can play a positive role in preserving the JCPOA,” he said.

“Iran’s moves to scale back its obligations under the JCPOA is a step towards preserving the agreement and prompting signatories to the deal to abide by their commitments, and if the other parties live up to their obligations, Iran is ready to return to its obligations,” he said.

Iran Leader Sets Condition for Talks with US

Ayatollah Khamenei Raps French President’s Insult to Prophet of Islam

“If the US takes back its word, repents and returns to the nuclear deal it violated, then it may join other JCPOA parties’ talks with Iran. Otherwise, there will be no negotiation at any level between Iranian and American officials, neither in New York nor elsewhere,” the Leader said on Tuesday.

His comments came amid speculations regarding a possible meeting between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“Now you are seeing that the Americans keep pursuing the issue of holding talks. This is a ploy. Everybody should know this and pay attention,” said the Leader.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that Washington keeps changing its words.

“Sometimes they speak of unconditional talks, sometimes talks without preconditions, and sometimes talks with twelve conditions. Now, either their policy is really a chaotic one and they don’t know what they want, which may be the case, or it could be that they are using this as a ploy,” he said.

“One of the ploys is that one person says one thing, and the other says another thing in order to confuse the other party,” Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

“But we won’t get confused,” said the Leader, adding, “We know what we are doing.”

He said Washington’s proposal of talks does not mean that the US is seeking a fair solution, but means that the White House wants Iran to accept whatever it says, “and they have become so impudent that they say this openly.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei touched upon the United States’ “maximum pressure” policy against Iran.

“The US government’s policy is to exert maximum pressure on Iran in the form of different sanctions, threats and nonsense comments,” the Leader noted.

However, Ayatollah Khamenei said, the Americans and their allies have admitted that the “maximum pressure” policy has failed to bring Iran to its knees.

US Seeking to Help Terrorists, Disintegrate Syria: Iran

Hassan Rouhani - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

“The US intends to disintegrate Syria, which is not acceptable for the regional countries, especially we three countries,” said Rouhani in a joint press conference with his Russian and Turkish counterparts Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.

“The United States’ ill intention is clear as it has donated part of Syrian soil, i.e., the Golan Heights, to an aggressor (Israel); this is one of strange historical matters that a country, without any legal permission, donates the territory of an occupied country to an aggressor!” said President Rouhani.

“In addition to these US moves, Israel’s continued interference on a daily basis and the bombardment of innocent people in Syria and of the country’s infrastructure run counter to Syria’s national sovereignty,” said the Iranian president.

He noted Syrian people have been suffering at the hands of terrorists, “and all of us know whose money supported these terrorists and who is giving them money today and who has supplied them with arms, which resulted in the killing of so many innocent people in Syria.”

President Rouhani also underlined the need for Syrian refugees to return to their homeland.

“We should make the whole Syria safe, so that Syrian people will be able to return home,” he added.

“We should also contribute to the reconstruction of Syria, and on the humanitarian front, too, we should help dear Syrian people who are suffering from numerous problems and much hardship,” he said.

President Rouhani further expressed satisfaction over the trend of Astana talks, the initiative by Iran, Russia, and Turkey to find a political solution to the Syria crisis.

“The Constitutional Committee is now complete and we hope this political development and constitutional reforms will take place as soon as possible,” he added.
