‘I’ll Talk’ Campaign Launched in Iran to Help Fight Depression

Depression

Psychiatrists say depression is the most prevalent mental disorder, and that conditions caused by depression will pave the way for the contractions of other diseases, too. Hence, the mental health group which took the initiative launched their campaign with the theme of “depression.”

The Iranian Psychiatric Association has launched the campaign which was unveiled by the website Iran Mental Health. Now, the #I’ll_Talk campaign is underway in cyberspace and on social media as a first step to draw attention to one of the most common mental problems, i.e., depression.

‘I’ll Talk’ Campaign Launched in Iran to Help Fight DepressionRenowned Iranian actress Fatemeh Motamed-Arya has also been chosen as the ambassador of this campaign.

“Let’s get to know the symptoms of depression and join the ‘I’ll talk’ campaign to get more familiar with this disease,” she said in a video.

Depression is a disease which has, for so long, worried Iranian officials, including former Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi. Two years ago, he had expressed concern over the prevalence of depression among Iranians and said its occurrence had registered a two-fold rise in 26 years.

“In terms of the burden of diseases, depression stands in the fourth spot, and forecasts show it will stand in the second spot in 2030,” he had said.

The “We’ll Talk” campaign manager says no new surveys have been conducted on the prevalence of depression in Iran.

“Generally speaking, what can be said is that one out of eight Iranians suffers from depression,” says Maryam Tabatabaee, a faculty member at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Many of those visiting the Instagram page and website which has launched the campaign ask who they should they talk to.

“We recommend they talk to their close relatives and friends they trust and tell them about the issue. Talking is the first step toward treatment and improvement. When one talks, he or she feels they are being understood and guided,” she says.

Maryam Rasoolian, the president of the Iranian Psychiatric Association, says the campaign is aimed at giving people awareness about depression, anxiety, suicide, etc.

“Biological surveys show talking has a healing effect as we can turn feelings into words through talking,” she says.

Campaign organizers says the initiative has been welcomed by people who will also be asked “to share their experiences with us regarding depression and its treatment.”

Herbals More Popular than Chemical Medicines

At the same time, the use of herbs and herbal remedies is getting more and more popular worldwide due to their many benefits and high efficacy.

These days, the use of herbs in various fields has become a high value added industry. Medicinal herbs are extracted in various ways and are used as valuable materials in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, natural supplements, cosmetics, food industry and so on.

The herb industry and paying attention to it is important in several ways:

Maintaining Health & Therapeutic Effects

Medications and chemical supplements can have unintended side effects next to their effective therapeutic properties. For example, some antidepressants are addictive or cause side effects such as fatigue and drowsiness during the day. However, antidepressant herbal medications and supplements, while effective because of their herbal ingredients, cause no harm to human health if used correctly.

At present, about 30% of all medicines produced in the world are herbal or herbal components, making these products more rapidly spreading than chemical drugs.

According to World Health Organisation statistics, more than 80 percent of the world’s population use herbs and herbal medicine to maintain their health or cure diseases. Medicines and natural supplements are produced in a variety of forms; including products for the treatment and prevention of diabetes, digestive disorders or even nutrients for the health of the body, etc.

People in different parts of the world have different motivations for using herbal products. Some are consuming natural products due to the healthiness of plant products and the dangers of chemicals, some because of the cheaper prices of these products, some people around the world because of their culture and traditions and others because of their valuable effects.

Economic Importance

Economically, the vegetable and natural products industry has a high turnover and is also growing. According to UNIDO, in 1990, the industry had a turnover of $1.2 billion, and in 20 years, it has reached $100 billion.

The World Bank forecasts that it will reach $ 5,000 billion by 2050, reflecting the high growth in consumption of these products.

Entrepreneurship

According to various reports, there are three job opportunities per hectare of medicinal plants. Reports also indicate that about 100 million people in China are busy in the field of medicinal herbs.

Ancient Clay Stamps Unearthed in Northeast Iran

The discovery was made on a historical hill called Rivi in northeastern North Khorasan province when Iranian and German archaeologists were examining the site.

“These stamps were found next to jars in a big hall,” says Mohammad-Javad Jafari, the head of the team of archaeologists working at the site.

“These stamps bear different geometric shapes as well as patterns of plants, animals and humans whose examination can offer very important information on the economy, culture, art and social phenomena of historical societies,” he says.

The archaeologist says these stamps indicate the existence of extensive economic relations between the local community and other peoples at the time, which made it all the more necessary for them to store goods.

He says people at the time apparently stored commodities in the jars and marked them with these stamps as signature before tying the jars together with a rope.

“Each and every one of the patterns imprinted on the seals is a very specific mark which can help study the economic network of the time and get to know the social strata,” he says.

The chief of German archaeologists working alongside their Iranian peers at the site also says the discovery of the stamps and jars during the seventh round of international excavations in a large clay building shows a network of warehouses and extensive economic transactions existed between locals and residents of other nearby settlements.

She says a large hall discovered at the site was used as a warehouse where big jars of food were kept.

According to the German archaeologist, stamps are used nowadays to seal some important documents and mail packages, but they have their roots in ancient times when stamps were used to mark commodities.

Ancient Rivi Site

The historical Rivi site dates back some 3,500 years. It was registered on Iran’s list of national heritage sites in 1967 and is regarded as one of the most significant historical sites in northeast of the country. The site is home to archaeological relics from different historical eras.

The most important historical eras where the site was inhabited by people are the Achaemenid, Parthian and Sassanid eras.

Iranian Scientist’s Family Urge His Release from US Prison

Professor Soleimani’s wife, Dr. Mahnaz Rabiei, along with his other family members, have slammed in their statement this hostile act by the US government. They say the abuse of nationals to oppress their government is an inhumane act and a clear example of human rights violation.

“The conspiracy by the US government and Mayo Clinic Institute to set up and arrest a scientist, who is an expert in his field (stem cells) and has stepped in to help hard-to-cure patients around the world was a purposeful movement, especially when we see he has authored numerous articles in the field and recently advanced eye-catchingly. This move is meant to keep a non-American scientist away from science and advancement,” reads their statement.

In the statement it is highlighted that Soleimani’s family object to the move to set up a scientist from a foreign country to be incarcerated in US prisons.

“We believe that making conditions insecure for scientists and the elite in every society disrupts the production of knowledge and diminishes the enthusiasm of leading world researchers. Obviously, no sensible person approves of this biased and inhumane behavior. Therefore, we explicitly demand that if the United States claims to respect human rights and justice, it must release Professor Soleimani as soon as possible because there is no adequate evidence to convict this innocent scientist. Perhaps, if there were [any evidence against him], his trial would not adjourn for a year.”

Dr. Soleimani’s family also thanked Tarbiat Modares University of Tehran and all Iranian institutions and independent media outlets and journalists who are working on the release of the Iranian scientists and are investigating the reasons for his detention.

However, they have also called on the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to pursue this process more seriously than ever. This comes as no immediate action has been taken to release the scientist, while his prolonged incarceration and the unlawful damages and difficulties are increasingly ongoing.

Masoud Soleimani, a full professor and head of the Hematology Department of Tarbiat Modares University, has been arrested almost a year ago by the FBI. He is a prominent scientist, who is not only the selected professor of Iran in 2015, but was recognised as the top one percent scientists and researchers in 2015. He is also known worldwide for his scientific stop-ulcers-meds.com.

In 2018, he was invited by the US Mayo Clinic to conduct research projects. After much insistence by Mayo Clinic, he accepted the invitation and departed for the United States in October 2018. However, the FBI canceled his visa, and detained him at the Chicago airport for illegal entry into the United States. Then, he was sent to a prison in Georgia under the pretext of violating US sanctions against Iran.

Now, Professor Soleimani has been held in prison for almost a year without charge and trial. The scholar, who had no negative or unlawful acts records in his life, was not allowed to be released on bail till his trial. This comes as his scientific endeavours and research have always been transparent and helpful to humanity, and his conduct and actions are in a very humane and respected way at prison according to the prisoners and guards.

He is now suffering from chronic irritable bowel syndrome and needs certain medications to reduce the pain caused by the illness and stress. Despite numerous attempts by the family to deliver medicines to him, and even the efforts of Interests Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the US to provide him with medications, it was opposed to give him the medicines. His mental and physical condition is now very poor and he has lost 15 kilograms of weight and suffers from severe eyesight loss.

FATF Ultimatum to Iran Politically-Motivated: FM Zarif

“The Islamic Republic, with its domestic laws, pursues the fight against money laundering as a necessary reality and a domestic goal,” Zarif told reporters on the sidelines of a conference on unilateralism and international law in Tehran on Monday.

“The FATF’s decision is completely politically-motivated and we strongly disagree with it but for the sake of our own national interest, we have taken all the necessary steps to fight against the financing of terrorism and money laundering,” he added.

On Friday, the Paris-based FATF put more pressure on Iran by asking countries to introduce enhanced processes for reporting financial transactions concerning the country.

It also called for other countries to step up audit requirements for financial institutions that have branches or subsidiaries in Iran.

The FATF also extended until February a deadline for Iran to implement certain measures or face further restrictions. The earlier deadline was June 2019.

The international body warned that if Iran doesn’t meet its standards by February, it will put back in place further restrictions on the country that are currently suspended. Further restrictions could make it more costly and difficult for Iran to do business with the banking systems of other FATF member states, according to media reports.

Iran Exports Rise by 22 Percent Despite Sanctions: VP

The first vice president on Monday described exporters as the ones who are on the front line of the combat against an economic war imposed on Iran

“The whole Iranian organizations and institutions in charge of exports must support the country’s business people and exporters and pave the way for an increase in the non-oil exports,” he said in a Monday session of the High Council of the Industrial Free Trade and Special Economic Zones.

Praising the exporters for becoming the spearhead of Iran’s fight against the economic war, Vice President Jahangiri said despite all sanctions and cruel pressures against Iran, the volume of exports during the first half of the current year has risen by 22 percent compared to the corresponding period last year.

The vice president also highlighted the role of Free Trade Zones in boosting exports, and called on the FTZ governors to devise special plans to increase exports from their zones in order to create a trade balance.

Jahangiri then described Iran’s neighbouring countries as the best export markets, stressing that the FTZs should prepare the ground for the Iranian companies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, the southern neighbours, and the Central Asian states.

An export boom will help Iran reduce the currency deficit, the vice president explained, adding, “Under the current circumstances that the country’s currency income has diminished because of the oil sanctions, we must seize the opportunity and strengthen the non-oil exports sector to supply the needed currency.”

He made the remarks in an address to the first edition of the International Conference on Unilateralism and International Law at the Allameh Tabataba’i University of Tehran.

In his Monday speech, Zarif deplored the incumbent US administration’s policy of excessive use of its power, noting, “Sanction is not different from war and economic terrorism, but the independent nations’ response is strengthening the relations and arrangements among themselves, which is fortunately being bolstered, particularly in the field of economic interaction.”

Foreign Minister Zarif explicated the current situation in the world affected by unilateralism and its adverse consequences.

“In our era, multilateralism is no more an option, but has turned into a necessity,” he added.

Highlighting the international community’s definite need for multilateralism, the Iranian foreign minister said, “Due to the excessive use of power and its reluctance to interact with the other actors, unilateralism has no chance of survival in the long term.”

Iran FM Visits Iranian Innovation Factory

The Azadi Innovation Factory has been set up to facilitate the entrepreneurial teams’ access to the necessary infrastructure and facilities, to create synergy among the start-ups, and to encourage innovation and creativity in a dynamic atmosphere.

During a visit to the factory on Monday, Foreign Minister Zarif met the Iranian researchers and activists in the knowledge-based sectors, saying, “Under the 12th (Iranian) Administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has set two super priorities: the regional issues, and the subject of resistance economy and economic diplomacy.”

On the links between those two priorities, the minister said, “The best destination for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s exports is the region.”

The Iranian knowledge-based companies and their scientific products are among the country’s relative advantages when it comes to exports, he noted.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review – 2019

“I was so glad today to see a lot of young people in here who are capable of achieving great success in the international markets, and I hope the administration could remove the obstacles that the cruel American sanctions have put in the way of these young people.”

“Nonetheless, what I realized after seeing these capable youths is that they will remove the obstacles by themselves, because the world would feel that lack of such capabilities would be a loss,” Zarif noted.

Hailing the modern and scientific methods available at the Azadi Innovation Factory, Foreign Minister Zarif wished the participants success.

$123m Worth of Machine-Made Rugs Exported from Kashan

Head of Industry, Mine and Trade Department of Kashan said “we exported more than $227 million worth of goods from Kashan with machine-woven carpets accounting for $123 million.”

Majid Barazandeh also pointed to the $128 million worth of exports from Kashan in the first six months of the current Iranian year saying that about 25 percent of the city’s exports included carpets.

Carpet and related industries play an important role in the production boom in Kashan, he said, adding that despite all the problems for carpet production, it is expected that rug exports will increase this year compared to last year.

The National Carpet and Related Industries Exhibition is to be held in December this year in Kashan.

“Holding such exhibitions introduces the industrial capacities of Kashan to other businessmen and can play an important role in boosting the economic growth of the city,” continued Barazandeh.

Statistics show that machine-made carpet accounts for half of the total export value of Iran’s textile industries.

Iranian machine-made carpet is considered as the most expensive textile product in the world in terms of design, quality and colour.
