Nowruz; Centuries-Old Tradition Keeping People Together

Iran-Nowruz

Like many age-old social phenomena and customs which have gone through a lot of ups and downs, Nowruz, this deep-rooted Iranian tradition, has not been fully explored.

The following is a partial translation of an article by Mohammad Ali Delkhah, published on 6 March 2015 in Iran-e Farda monthly, about the traditional Iranian festival and its important aspects and underlying messages which have slipped into oblivion:

Nowruz Has Deep Roots in Iran History

Nowruz has always been part and parcel of Iran’s history. Many believe that it is Iran that has helped Nowruz ride out the storms of history, in many cases the reverse is true, though. For instance, when al-Mutawakkil, an Abbasid caliph, banned the Iranians from holding Nowruz celebrations, they held a protest rally around an old cypress, believed to have been planted by Zoroaster, in Kashmar [in what is today Khorasan Razavi Province]. Al-Mutawakkil ordered the tree cut down.

Nowruz in Ancient IranIn reaction, Iranians of different religions rebelled against the caliph and helped al-Muntasir, his son, with a plot to topple the caliph. Al-Mutawakkil was finally murdered by an Iranian guard with the backing of al-Muntasir. That was how Nowruz brought about national unity among Iranians.

Nowruz Traditions Bring About Purging and Renewal

Joy and excitement are part of all celebrations; what distinguishes Nowruz from other festivities is that its fever is closely connected with wisdom and unity with nature.

For example, one cannot normally sit at a Haft-Seen table without going through a preparatory stage first. According to tradition, your house and your spirit should be purged of any dirt first.

Traditionally, the last Tuesday of each year is dedicated to cleansing spirits of immorality and evil thoughts. Our ancestors viewed Tuesday as a perfect day to that end because it comes right in the middle of the week [Iranian week starts Saturday].Spring Cleaning for Nowruz

In light of the fact that Nowruz was celebrated on the spring equinox, the spiritual cleansing had to be done on the last Tuesday. On this day, Iranians would jump over three bonfires, making three pledges. First they would vow to abandon all evil thoughts. Then they would promise to treat others nicely and speak with them kindly. And finally, in the last jump which was deemed holy, they would pledge to base their deeds and behavior on beneficence.

Nowruz is reminiscent of revival and a new life. This renewal of nature cannot be seen in New Year celebrations of other nations that take place in the middle of the winter.

Besides, moral messages are embedded in Nowruz traditions. According to our culture, those who want to be dressed in new clothes are advised to help the needy and donate clothes to them, too.

Boosting Social Bonds

Nowruz in fact is more aimed at promoting wisdom than just merely having fun. Visiting family and friends is another feature of this festival. In Zoroastrianism, a house where a guest is put up is said to be blessed by Amesha Spenta [a class of divine entities]. Such gatherings and visits, even if once a year, can boost social bonds. They won’t allow grudges to grow deeply entrenched.

Nowruz is a unifying factor. Even those who live beyond Iran’s national borders are linked through this strong link to Iran and its culture. Every Iranian who moves abroad takes this cultural asset with them. Nowruz is beyond a mere festival; it’s a culture which introduces a human civilization.

Nowruz in YazdNowruz advances socials goals too. Firstly, it is a celebration of justice. For instance, if you look at Persepolis inscriptions, you can see that Iranians with different religious backgrounds would take part as equals in Nowruz celebrations at the historical site.

Secondly, Nowruz is a happy event which invites people to be joyful, but unfortunately, nowadays, our delight is only confined to the first few days of Nowruz and is short-lived. Joyfulness is very important for a nation, because happy people tend to be more productive.

Another advantage of Nowruz is that it offers a chance to bolster social relations. Also, it creates a bond between all Iranians across the world and promotes unity among them.

We Should Promote the Message Behind Nowruz Traditions

But the problem is that we have a superficial approach to Nowruz and its messages. We need to deeply explore its concepts.

Except for the Achaemenid era when there was a close bond between Nowruz and the official culture, in no other periods have these two ever overlapped. Back then, Nowruz was not only celebrated by a few. Everyone irrespective of their social status took part in festivities and presented a gift, no matter how small, to the king.‘Nowruz Khani

Given the cultural invasion of unbridled and violent cultures whose origins are unknown, we need to pay considerable attention to our traditions. The philosophy and underlying messages of them should be regularly explained to the public so that their concepts are institutionalized and we can ride out the storms that threaten the morality of our civilization.

If we can promote these aspects of Nowruz traditions in society, disputes, cruelty and insatiable greed will die down.

One who is after destruction, takes bribes, robs people or abuses power has no love for this land. Those who love this country try to contribute to its development and to enhancement of national bonds. This cannot be fulfilled unless the principles of kindness and wisdom are upheld.

Iran Says Number of Patients It Tests for COVID-19 Daily 3,000 More than US

The Pasteur Institute of Iran started designing the novel coronavirus diagnosis kits two months before identifying the first positive case of the disease in the country, Alireza Biglari said.

“Almost from the very beginning, we were ready to conduct tests,” he said in a video press conference on Sunday.

He said the tests in each country should be tailored to the conditions of that country.

Biglari noted that the lab was only able to perform 60 tests a day in the early stages, but now it can test 2,000 patients a day after less than two weeks.

“Given the increasing number of laboratories and testing capacity in the country, we are currently able to perform 10,000 tests a day, while the US is able to carry out 7,000 tests.”

The official said that 56 laboratories were launched in different parts of the country and staff in these laboratories have received the necessary training and equipment, therefore the network is operating as a robust and coherent entity.

The provinces of Zanjan, East Azarbaijan, Fars and Isfahan are conducting a test which has been hailed by the World Health Organisation, he reiterated.

The head of the Pasteur Institute of Iran said in order to increase the capacity of the laboratories for further testing in the country, more kits are needed, but the kits received so far have been more donations by other countries.

“At least 53 companies announced readiness to produce kits and two of them have been approved. We hope some other companies can produce more corona diagnosis kits per day.”

Head of the Pasteur Institute of Iran pointed out that COVID-19 is one of the most unknown viruses in the world and one of the most dangerous pandemics in the last 100 years.

Biglari mentioned that countries such as China and US have begun producing vaccines, “but we are not sure about the effectiveness of these vaccines on the immune system, and we must observe clinical effects.”

The Pasteur Institute of Iran has begun work on finding a vaccine, but due to insufficient knowledge, the process can be lengthy, continued Biglari.

“More than one type of medication has been suggested to improve corona disease, but the exact effect and mechanism of a single drug has not been shown yet. China is currently the producer of the most effective drug, and it will enter clinical trials in the coming weeks,” he added.

Biglari said currently there is no fully effective cure for the disease, but many patients have recovered even without medication. Protective and maintenance therapies are now being implemented in hospitals and recommended by healthcare providers to break down and slow down the chain to make health systems strong.

Stressing that the Islamic Republic has taken measures to prevent the disease amid sanctions, this official stated that the health infrastructure of the country is acceptable and this amount of sacrifice cannot be found anywhere in the world.

“The lesson Corona outbreak taught us is that we must work on social unity and public instruction. We learned that if people do not cooperate, the public health will be compromised.”

Pasteur Institute of Iran

“The Pasteur Institute of Iran is 100 years old. It has been one of the main centres across the World and the second oldest Pasteur Institute in the world after that of France. The outbreak of coronavirus is an opportunity for the Pasteur Institute,” Biglari explained.

He pointed out that research into disease prevention and vaccine production is one of the tasks of the Pasteur Institute, adding that the Iranian centre is one of the leading vaccine manufacturers in the Middle East.

He said every Iranian has a molecule from the Pasteur Institute of Iran in his/her body.

“The performance of the Pasteur Institute of Iran within the country and the region has made it an internationally acclaimed institution. It has opened the door to new technologies and has created a channel to export scientific achievements abroad and train excellent scientists for the future of the country.”

Rouhani Says US Offer of Help for Iran ‘Historical Lie’

Rouhani said the US claim that it is ready to help the Islamic Republic in the fight against the coronavirus is one of the biggest lies in history.

He questioned the sincerity of Washington’s offer saying what the US is doing is like someone offering a muddy glass of water while blocking the flow of the stream from which clean water is coming.

He made the comment in the government’s cabinet meeting on Monday.

The Iranian president said if Washington is really willing to help, it should remove the cruel sanctions against the Iranian nation.

Rouhani said the country’s doctors, scientists and nurses are self-sufficient and know what to do if the restrictive measures are put aside.

Tensions between the two countries have been running high since 2018, when US President Donald Trump withdrew from Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers and reimposed sanctions
that have crippled the Iranian economy.

Iranian authorities have blamed US sanctions for hampering its efforts to curb the outbreak and Rouhani has urged Americans to call on their government to lift sanctions as Iran fights the coronavirus.

On Monday, Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also accused the United States of hampering the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a tweet, he said the US refusal to lift its illegal sanctions on Iran is impeding efforts to curb the spread of the illness.

Zarif said the US is not listening to international calls for the removal of the bans. He urged the global community to defy what he called the US punishment of the Iranian nation, saying it’s the only remedy.

The top diplomat also reiterated that Iranians appreciate the growing global campaign against America’s sanction regime on their country.

Boloni; A Fortune-Telling Ritual Performed in Nowruz

Boloni; A Fortune-Telling Ritual Performed in Nowruz

Boloni used to be one of the rituals performed by Iranian people during the days when families came together to visit each other and celebrate Nowruz. The ritual, which was performed by teenage boys and girls, was overseen by one of the elder family members or a white-bearded man.

Each person attending this ritual put a part of their personal belongings that recalled their memories, such as the hairpins, the button of a shirt, part of a cloth, mirror, and so on in a clay jug called “Boloni”.

They also wrote a piece of poem by great Iranian poets, especially Hafez, Saadi, Rumi and Nezami, and threw it into the jog.

Then, one of the immature boys or girls of the family took out a piece of paper from Boloni, giving it to the person observing the ritual.

The white-bearded man read the poem written on it and interpreted it for all. The same child would bring out one of the objects inside the Boloni. The poem and its interpretation would return to the person to whom the object belonged. If the interpretation of the poem was good, it would reflect good luck for that person in the New Year. However, if the interpretation was unpleasant, it would reflect the bad omen for the person.

Of course Iranians believe the fate of each person is subject to divine judgment and providence. Therefore, the ritual was mostly for fun and entertainment. It was one of the ways that helped bring families together during the Nowruz holidays.

Boloni has been prevalent in the central plateau of Iran, especially in the provinces of Fars, Isfahan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, northern Kerman and Yazd, but they were held in different ways. In Isfahan province, for example, poems written on paper were only from Hafez’s sonnets. In northern Kerman or in Yasouj there was no poem written on paper, but first the eldest family member or host of the ritual, read a piece from a book of poetry. He would interpret the sonnet, and then the immature child took out the objects from the “Boloni” jug.

Iran Says ‘Alarmed’ by Consequences of Afghanistan Presidential Dispute

Following is the text of the statement:

In the Name of God

The Islamic Republic of Iran is closely monitoring the political and security developments in Afghanistan with concern, and is alarmed by the unpredictable consequences of the disputes over the results of the Afghan presidential elections for the internal stability and also by its regional impacts.

The Islamic Republic of Iran blames such conditions on the US government’s disregard for the existing problems with the holding of elections in Afghanistan and its ignorance of the lessons from them, particularly from the Afghanistan’s presidential election in 2014.

Giving priority to the US president’s needs in his election campaign for the presidential election in November and the US’ irresponsible impetuosity in advancing the negotiations without considering the region’s interests and security resulted in disregard for the internal issues, which led to the current circumstances.

Following the outbreak of the ongoing disputes between Honorable Dr. Ghani and Honorable Dr. Abdullah, we have sadly witnessed the continuation of the unilateral policies of the US government and the US’ move to sacrifice the national interests of Afghan people to fulfill the objectives of the US president’s campaign, whose result is driving Afghanistan into the path of intensification of crisis and escalation of political tensions in that country.

At the present time, for the good of the public interests of people of Afghanistan and in order to protect peace and stability in that country which would have far-reaching regional impacts, the Islamic Republic of Iran invites the political leaders of Afghanistan and also the regional countries to employ their full capacities to find a way out of the disagreements between the two leaders over the results of the recent presidential election in that country.

The Islamic Republic of Iran hopes that formation of an inclusive government with the participation of all political factions and groups of Afghanistan would immediately prepare the ground for the beginning of intra-Afghan talks with the participation of all political groups in that country, including the Taliban.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared, like the past, for an active participation in the regional efforts that are made with the purpose of settlement of problems in Afghanistan, and to exercise its capacities for ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

Iran Left Out of World Bank Meeting on COVID-19

IMF

The World Bank has refused to invite Iran to a video conference meeting on the fight against COVID-19, which was held jointly with the IMF and attended by the economy ministers of the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, Iran’s envoy to the IMF announced.

In the joint meeting, held three days ago, the MENA ministers discussed the plans to protect people against COVID-19 and mitigate the economic damages caused by the disease, Hossein Mirshojae’ian added, noting that the IMF and the World Bank have promised in the meeting to provide more supports for those countries.

“We’d appreciate the World Bank and the MENA team, but Iran has been unfortunately not invited to the conference, while such pandemic and contagious disease requires global cooperation, and the countries gripped by the virus really need inclusive supports from the World Bank without any expectations,” the Iranian envoy said in a tweet.

Earlier in March, the governor of the Central Bank of Iran said he has asked the International Monetary Fund for a $5 billion loan that would help the country deal with the outbreak of COVID-19, saying the IMF’s response will be a litmus test for claims about relief aid for containing the disease.

Iran’s Air Defence Warns Off Intruding US Jet Fighter

The video, released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), dates back to the first day of the Iranian New Year (started on March 20) and shows Iranian Army’s Air Defense Force warning the intruding fighter jet, whose nationality has not been revealed, to get away from the country’s border after it approached the Iranian airspace on Friday, Tasnim news agency reported.

The Iranian forces warned the fighter jet that if it maintained its course toward Iran’s airspace, it would be targeted by the country’s air defense missiles.

Having been warned by Iranian forces, the fighter jet changed its course immediately and departed Iran’s airspace.

In Letter to Foreign Colleagues, Iranian Artists Urge Action against US Sanctions

The letter, signed by 253 Iranian artists, has complained about the unfair and cruel Western sanctions against people of Iran while the country is struggling to contain the coronavirus epidemic.

Hidden Entezami
Hossein Entezami, head of the Cinema Organization of Iran

“Iranians are facing the Corona crisis and the crisis of unjustly imposed sanctions. It’s important to know that when our large numbers of infected are waiting for their turn and facing shortages of medical supplies, what will you do?” said Hossein Entezami, head of the Cinema Organization of Iran, citing part of the letter in a post on his Twitter account.

Following is an English version of the Iranian artists’ letter:

“All of us, citizens of any country and of any nationality, are also citizens of a territory without borders and flags called “art”, in a world called “culture”, and no power can ever deprive us of this citizenship.

In this common and dream territory, Asian or European, American or African, we all possess the gift of cultural understanding and communication, the talent to influence public opinion, the ability to analyze and the opportunity to change the conditions of human society.

All of us, with our works, with our artistic tastes, with the particularities and uniqueness of our cultures, have imagined and expressed faith and unbelief, love and hate, peace and war, knowledge and ignorance, goodness and malice, damnation, salvation and redemption, and through these works we have learned to know and make known a shared world much larger than the countries in which we live.

The more the powers and their policies, driven by hatred and intolerance, have tried to divide and oppress us, the more we have become united and strong and courageous, more determined and incisive in transmitting our common humanitarian messages.

At this moment, all of us, regardless of the geographic and political positions, are facing a common mortal enemy that does not matter where it comes from, but imports itself everywhere, in freedom and in a hurry. In the face of this tiny enemy, we are fragile and vulnerable to the same extent, and we cannot save ourselves without saving the other.

Coronavirus is not only a virus, but a historical, yet simple, question that is receiving complicated answers from the nations and governments of the world.

We ask you: “Can the response of the Iranian nation, suffocated by sanctions, be on a par with the responses of all other nations to this historic question?”

Is it not legitimate to expect that the response of free and independent artists from around the world to the question “Coronavirus”, with the common danger behind the doors, will be different and more effective than the answers of their politicians and the powerful sides?

This crisis will sooner or later pass, with more or less victims, but its stories, common or different, will remain. The story will remain about the exhausted nurses who, to raise the morale of the patients and colleagues, started dancing in the infected corridors of the hospitals, hiding their despair behind this fake cheerfulness because of the lack of means and medicines. The story of the doctors who stayed away from home for weeks, without masks and gloves, among the patients in the intensive care unit often treated on the ground in the hospital corridors, will remain.

These and other stories will remain indelible in the historical memory of the world, and sooner or later, by you or us, they will be told.

Maybe before it’s too late, before even some of us are out of breath, the artists engaged and influential in the public opinion would do well to tell the story of the oppression and isolation against the Iranian people, appealing to politicians and to the powerful parties of the world.

The Iranian people today face two emergencies; one that you know as “Coronavirus”, and the other that we wish you would never know: the “sanctions”.

For us Iranian artists, in this moment of humanitarian emergency, it is vitally important to know what you, artists from all over the world, think of the conditions in which our infected citizens, children and elderly people suffering from Coronavirus find themselves… of the disastrous shortcomings of the Iranian medical community and health system collapsed between emergency and sanctions. It is essential to know how you plan to support us.”

MSF Sends Medical Aid to Help Iran’s Fight against COVID-19

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy in Paris announced in a Twitter post that a shipment of medical aid provided by the MSF, including a field hospital, medicines, masks, coveralls for caregivers, and other equipment has left the French city of Bordeaux for Tehran by a charter flight on Sunday morning.

“In the current conditions where the world is inflamed and worried by the coronavirus, strengthening global solidarity is a necessity,” the Iranian Embassy added.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international humanitarian medical non-governmental organization of French origin, best known for its projects in the conflict zones and in the countries affected by endemic diseases.
