Iranian, Afghan Top Diplomats Hold Talks in Tehran

Iranian, Afghan Top Diplomats Hold Talks in Tehran

During the Sunday meeting, which was held in three rounds, the two sides conferred on the latest developments in bilateral relations, including political, economic and cultural collaborations, security and border cooperation, the issue of Afghan nationals and refugees, transport ties, and other issues of mutual interest.

The two top diplomats also discussed the document of comprehensive cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan, which was agreed to be finalized in three months at most.

The high-ranking Afghan delegation will discuss and follow up on the agreements reached between the two foreign ministers within eight committees today and tomorrow.

The Afghan top diplomat’s visit to Tehran comes weeks after the deaths of a number of Afghan nationals who had plans for illegal entry into Iran or had entered Iran illegally with the help of traffickers, but lost their lives in the Harirud River.

Kabul says they were forced by Iranian border guards to go into the river, but Tehran denies the claim.

A number of Afghan nationals were also killed in a car fire in Iran’s Yazd province in a separate incident.

Afghan people accused the Iranian police for shooting at the car, which was carrying illegal immigrants, before it caught fire, but the Afghan ambassador to Tehran says the traffickers are to blame for the blaze.

Iran MPs Demand Halt to Implementation of Additional Protocol

Iran MPs Demand Halt to Implementation of Additional Protocol

Reading out the statement on Sunday, a member of the Parliament’s Presiding Board lambasted Europe for not having a constructive approach vis-à-vis the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“The European pressure policy to, what they call, preserve the JCPOA shows the three European countries, namely Britain, France and Germany, have, since the beginning, not pursued an approach which has been constructive and aimed at respecting the Iranian nation’s rights, and have had the idea that the JCPOA is a tool to pressure Iran into submitting to their unwarranted demands,” said Ali Karimi Firoozjaee.

“The parliament is asking the respectful government to stop the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol and make supervisions offline,” read the statement.

The statement highlighted that the Europeans are contradictory when it comes to putting their words into practice.

“Unfortunately, the full contradiction between the words and deeds of these European countries, which, on the one hand, are supporting the illegal [IAEA] resolution against the Iranian nation, and on the other hand, claim to be abiding by the JCOPA and trying to preserve it, shows they have once again fallen into the trap of the US and Israel, and, aligning themselves with their efforts to implement the failed maximum-pressure policy against Iran, have dealt yet another blow to international multilateralism,” said the statement.

It expressed hope the International Atomic Energy Agency would correct its inappropriate and dangerous approach when it comes to dealing with Iran.

Iran’s First Production Line for Insulin Jet Injectors Enters Service

Iran’s First Production Line for Insulin Jet Injectors Enters Service

Iran’s Vice President for Science and Technology has inaugurated the first production line for insulin jet injectors in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Sorena Sattari described the move as a giant and positive step for Iran.

“Insulin is one of the medicines in the country which requires a lot of foreign currency [to procure], and we were not able to step into that domain previously,” said Sattari.

“But fortunately, the inauguration of the first production line for insulin jet injectors is a major and positive step for Iran,” he said on Sunday.

He said the development is an initial step for Iran to achieve more accomplishments in this sector.

He noted knowledge-based companies are active in the production of medical equipment and medicines, and expressed his gratitude to the one such firm which managed to produce insulin jet injectors in the country.

No Talks with US, Whatsoever: Iran Parliament Speaker

No Talks with US, Whatsoever: Iran Parliament Speaker

Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said on Sunday Tehran is not against diplomacy and talks, but believes talks with Washington would be “detrimental.”

“And negotiations with European countries should be held with maximum distrust,” he said.

“By heeding the US calls to promote the (anti-Iran) resolution on Friday, the Europeans showed that they are nothing short of the US when it comes to bearing grudge against Iran,” he added.

“The Europeans should know that the US failed to advance its bullying tactics by resorting to the knee-on-the-neck policy, and today, it is using Europe as a medium to achieve its goals,” he added.

Today, those supporting the anti-Iran resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) “are to blame for the tension in Iran-IAEA relations,” he said.
He noted the resolution was passed due to lobbying by Washington and Tel Aviv as well as machinations by the European countries against Iran.

He said many of the countries voting for the resolution were under heavy US pressure.
He said the Zionist circles which are behind these machinations keep dreaming that they can sow discord within the ranks of the Iranian nation and Islamic Establishment.
The speaker said they believe they can exert pressure on Iran and find a way to hold Iran to ransom by passing such resolutions.

“I’m announcing loud and clear that today, the officials of the Islamic Establishment see eye to eye on the fact that the US and Zionist regime [of Israel] are not able to achieve any of their objectives at regional and international levels, and the IAEA will not be allowed to violate legal frameworks, whatsoever,” he said.

Qalibaf underscored Iran has cooperated generously with the IAEA within the framework of international regulations and its national interests, but often received growing enmity and was held to ransom more than before.

The eclipse reached its peak around 10:20 am in most parts of the country, and began to disappear after 11:30.

The largest eclipse was seen in Chabahar, southeastern Iran, where 95% of the sun was covered.

The eclipse of the sun occurs when the moon prevents the sunlight from reaching certain parts of the earth by standing between the earth and the sun.

Iran Exports $17bn Worth of Goods in 12 Months through Free Economic Zones

Around $5 billion worth of goods produced in free and special economic zones were also sent to the mainland over the same period.

“Last year (the year ending March 2020), only $5 billion worth of commodities were imported into free and special economic zones,” added Morteza Banak, an advisor to President Hassan Rouhani and the secretary of the Supreme Council for Free and Special Economic Zones.

He said around 186 thousand jobs have been created in free and special economic zones over the past seven years.

“Implementing and inaugurating delayed projects is one of the programs for free and special zones, and we hope these projects will be put into service by year’s end,” he said.

The official said more than 300 development projects are scheduled to come on line in free and special economic zones by March 2021, which could create between 40,000 to 45,000 jobs.

“Since last year, we began to establish infrastructure for production activities which could increase output and investment, especial domestic investment,” he said.

The official underlined the private sector has made around Rls.100 billion together with $200 million of investment in free zones, adding the figure is expected to rise by 50% this year.

New Historical Sites Identified Near Pasargadae

Founded by Cyrus II the Great in 6th century BCE, it contains a great deal of Persian history—from the first phase of royal Achaemenid art, to the tombs of its rulers.

UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site back in 2004.

In December 2019, teams of archaeologists unearthed several new historical sites. So far, experts conclude that they could potentially belong to the Middle Paleolithic, Paleolithic, Epipaleolithic, Achaemenid, Parthian, or Sassanid civilizations.

Cultural heritage experts are currently studying extensively and seeing if they can unearth other artifacts. Should enough discoveries be found among the uncovered sites, there’s potential for it to be added as another World Heritage Site.

Iran, a World Heritage treasure
UNESCO has been discovering age-old monuments in Iran since the late ’70s. Aside from Pasargadae, a report on Iran Tourism highlights that modern-day Persia has 22 of World Cultural Heritage Sites landmarked throughout the country. For example, the West Azerbaijan Province alone contains three: St. Thaddeus, St. Stepanos, and the Chapel of Dzordzor. These churches represented the exchanges of regional cultures done by the Persians, Byzantine, and the Orthodox.

There are even entire historical cities like Soltaniyeh, the capital of the Ilkhanid dynasty. It’s famous octagonal buildings and turquoise-blue faiences represented the crowning moment of Persian architecture.

Here a couple of Iran’s notable UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

• Bisotun, the inscription on the sacred mountain
• Golestan Palace, home to the Qajar family
• Persepolis, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire
• Tchogha Zanbil, ruins of the holy city
• Masjed-e Jāmé of Isfahan, the towering mosque
• Shahr-i Sokhta, the “burnt city” of the Bronze Age

The latest one to be added to the list is The Historic City of Yazd back in 2017. Located southeast of Isfahan, it’s said to be a remnant of an ancient desert civilization.

Iran is also known as an important historical destination on the silk road, allowing the country to trade with China and the surrounding nations. Many of the famous silks were made and traded in the province of Isfahan, which is one of Iran’s top historical locations with many World Heritage Sites. Iran continues to have strong ties with China with a silk road train now connecting the two countries. This is unsurprising, as Asian gaming website ExpatBets has several articles on China that shows how the country is once again a leading country in terms of foreign trade. For archeologists, the Persian sector of the silk road has continued to reveal just how close the two countries were, and why Chinese trade is such a big part of Iran’s heritage.

The importance of World Heritage Sites

While World Heritage Sites are essential for preserving the history of the planet, they make excellent tourist attractions as well. Indeed, Iran’s tourism generated over 1,158 trillion rials back in 2019, which contributed to at least 6.5% of their national GDP. Considering that many of Iran’s landmarks are historic locations, they have become one of the largest contributors to the local economy.

As one of the highest civilizations back in the day, Iran has experienced its fair share of history. And with centuries of history, the discoveries made near Pasargadae are far from the end of them. Archeologists even unearthed an old polo field near the city of Aligudarz very recently. It’s one of three other historic polo fields dug up today.
