Washington imposes sanctions on four Iranians over alleged plot to kidnap US-based journalist

Five Iranians Jailed Abroad on Bogus Charges of Military Activities, MP Says

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control claimed in a press statement on Friday that senior Iran-based intelligence official Alireza Shahvaroghi Farahani led a group of Iranian intelligence officers in a plot to kidnap a US-based reporter.

Though not mentioned by name in the Treasury’s statement or on its website, the journalist and activist is presumably Masih Alinejad, a reporter who has contributed to the US government-funded Voice of America Persian language service and reports on human rights issues in Iran.

“The Iranian government’s kidnapping plot is another example of its continued attempt to silence critical voices, wherever they may be,” Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control Andrea M Gacki said in the statement.

“Targeting dissidents abroad demonstrates that the government’s repression extends far beyond Iran’s borders,” she added.

The failed plot to allegedly kidnap the journalist led to the group’s indictment at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York in late July. The group of four stands accused of conspiracy related to kidnapping, sanctions violations, bank and wire fraud, and money laundering.

The team allegedly planned the abduction of the journalist, who lives in New York City, the Treasury Department said on Friday, claiming that the group allegedly hired a private investigator to spy on the victim and laundered money from Iran to the US to pay for the surveillance.

Sadeghi allegedly “researched options to abduct the victim via military-style speedboats out of New York City for transport to Venezuela”, according to the Treasury Department.

Farahani is also accused of leading Mahmoud Khazein, Kiya Sadeghi and Omid Noori in a plot to target Iranian dissidents in the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates.

Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) engages in domestic repression, the Treasury also claimed, stressing that targeting dissidents, journalists and opposition leaders undermines international peace and security.

MOIS was previously designated by the US as being responsible for, or complicit in, the commission of serious human rights abuses against Iranian people, the department added.

Iran’s Leader Condoles with Family of Late General Hassan Firoozabadi

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the respected wife, children and other survivors of late Major General Hassan Firoozabadi, a long-time colleague of mine,” wrote the leader in his condolence message.

Ayatollah Khamenei appreciated the invaluable efforts by the demised general as well as the whole range of activities he was involved in during his years of service as the chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed forces, as a member of the Expediency Council, and in other capacities entrusted to him.

The Leader described the late general as a man with a “spirit of worship, religiosity, honesty and strong faith coupled with revolutionary action.”

“I ask God Almighty to grant him divine forgiveness, and his survivors peace and patience,” he added.

General Firoozabadi died of coronavirus on Friday.

Ismail Khan, the lion who went to Iran twice after captivity

This was the second time Ismail Khan, aka The Lion of Herat, was taken into captivity by the Taliban.

Ismail Khan was born in 1948 in the village of Nasrabad in Afghanistan’s western province of Herat. After elementary education, he went to the military school and then the war university.

When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Ismail Khan defected from the Army to join Afghan Mujahedin who had taken up arms against the invaders. When the Soviet-backed regime came close to collapse in the 1990s, the Communist government’s last president Dr. Najibollah agreed to transfer power to a council of the Mujahedin leaders.

Nine days before the arrival of the Mujahedin in Kabul in 1992, Ismail Khan, along with his forces, took over the city of Herat. That was the year when Afghanistan’s bloody war started.  Ismail Khan was a major supporter of the government of former president Burhanuddin Rabbani who was the leader of the Mujahedin.

After the rise of the Taliban to power in 1996, Ismail Khan fought against them for several years. In 1997, he was captured by the Taliban and put in jail. After some time, he fled the Kandahar prison and went to Iran. But Ismail Khan later returned to Afghanistan to continue his fight against the Taliban.

After the downfall of the Taliban amid the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the veteran soldier once again became the Herat governor. But he was more than a governor and ruled over Herat as an autonomous leader.

Iran calls for restraint amid Panjshir clashes

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh called for an end to fratricide and violence in Afghanistan, telling Afghan groups to resolve their differences through dialogue.

Khatibzadeh added that Iran is in touch with all sides and has done its best to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people as much as possible.

He said peace and stability is possible in Afghanistan only through talks between Afghan groups without the presence and interference of foreign countries. “Afghanistan is weary of years of occupation, war and violence, so all groups must avoid resorting to violence and fratricide again.” Khatibzadeh added.

He also condemned any foreign interference in Afghanistan, saying the Afghan people deserve an inclusive and popular government that would represent all ethnic groups of Afghanistan.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran will stand by the people of Afghanistan, just as it has done over the past 40 years.

China, Iran FMs vow to implement strategic partnership deal

During a phone call on Friday, Iranian and Chinese foreign ministers expressed readiness to go ahead with the implementation of the deal that was signed by Tehran and Beijing back in March.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said Beijing seeks a comprehensive expansion of bilateral ties with Tehran, emphasizing the Chinese president’s serious determination to expand Sino-Iranian ties.

“We believe that no international development or obstacle can disrupt the two countries’ stable relations,” Wang said.

Top Iranian diplomat Amir Abdollahian, for his part, stressed the importance of the strategic ties between the two sides and the long-running friendship between them. Amir Abdollahian said the current Iranian administration is working diligently to implement the comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement.

The foreign ministers of Iran and China also stressed the need for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan with the participation of all factions and ethnicities.

Under the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, the Chinese government will increase investment in Iran’s energy, transportation and other key sectors.

The agreement will also enhance military and intelligence cooperation between the two countries.

Raisi visits remote village on border with Afghanistan

On the second day of his visit to the southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, the Iranian president listened to the demands and problems of the people in Molla Ali village.

Raisi said the presence of people in the border area contributes to maintaining security there.

The Iranian president also praised the great diligence people in border areas have shown despite tough conditions.

“Although we are today facing decreasing rainfall and water shortage, you have shown that through diligence and creativity, you can turn all threats into opportunities,” Raisi said.

The Iranian president noted that he is focusing on water issues during his trip to the southeastern part of the country.

Raeisi touched upon some of the solutions that he deems possible to address water scarcity in the area such as a more widespread use of deep water wells.

The Iranian president also said transferring water through pipelines and canals from the Sea of Oman is another option which is achievable but will take more time.

He went on to describe border markets as an important economic capacity of the area calling on responsible bodies to take measures to help the markets prosper.

“Iran’s borders with its neighbors should be borders of economy, interaction and exchanges to pave the way for the development of border areas, improvement in security and livelihood of people in these areas,” the president added.

Ali Daei Praises Ronaldo After Beating World Top Scorer Record

On Wednesday, Ronaldo scored two headed goals in a 2-1 home win against the Republic of Ireland, which saw him pass Daei’s record of 109 national goals, to become the record holder of men’s football top national scorers.

“Your humility and kindness make you an even greater champion, @cristiano log may your record last!” Daei said in a tweet, after Ronaldo broke his record.

Daei’s message was a response to Ronaldo’s own Instagram post after he smashed Daei’s record.

“Another reason for me to appreciate this achievement as much as I do right now, is because Ali Daei has set the standards in such a high level, that at some point even I started thinking that I might never catch him. Congratulations to the ‘Shariar’ [King; as Daei is known among his fans in Iran] for holding the record for so long and thanks for always showing so much respect for me every time I scored and as I became closer and closer to his outstanding number,” he wrote in on Instagram.

Daei, now 52, played for the Iranian national team until 2006. A year after his retirement he was appointed to FIFA Football Committee, where he served for seven years. The former Iranian striker was inducted into the Asian Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Heiko Maas and Amir Abdollahian, Iran and German FM

Hossein Amir Abdollahian, in a phone conversation with his German counterpart Heiko Maas, added such talks should fulfill the rights of the Iranian people.

Amir Abdollahian also spoke of US President Joe Biden’s recent threat against Iran, saying the US must mind its manners while talking to Iran.

He added that US officials virtually have no sound understanding of the region and Iran, most particularly the Iranian people. The way the US speaks to Iran will not only fail to help resolve problems but it also complicates the situation.

The foreign minister also urged the group of countries known as the European Troika including Germany, Britain and France, to change course and begin abiding by their obligations under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

He accused the US of hypocrisy, saying Washington has hampered imports of vital and medical supplies to Iran through sanctions.

Maas in his turn called for the Vienna talks over the Iran nuclear deal to resume as soon as possible.

He also said Germany is ready to take all necessary measures to send BionTech’s Covid vaccine to Iran.

595 killed by corona, more than 30k new infections

The deaths happened over the past 24 hours, Iranian health officials said on Thursday.

The disease has so far killed 108,988 Iranians. Officials also registered 30,279 new infections in the last 24 hours. That pushes the total number of people contracting the Coronavirus to 5,055,512.

Figures also show 4,269,508 people recovered from Covid-19 and 28,442,990 got inoculated.

Iranians have criticized authorities, saying they dragged their feet on importing vaccines and that is to blame for the high death toll as well as the rising infections and hospitalizations.

Authorities admit they acted with delay but say the vaccination campaign has gained steam and the majority of citizens will get their jabs in the next couple of months.
