Anzali Lagoon Fire in North Iran Believed to be ‘Arson’: Official

Gilan Public Prosecutor General Mahdi Fallah Miri described the fire as “arson” while inspecting operations to extinguish the blaze.

“What is clear is that similar incidents have happened at the lagoon in the past, and this blaze was fueled by this year’s drought caused by shortage of rain,” he added.

“The provincial crisis management team have been stationed at the site, and some provincial as well as national resources have been used to bring the flames under control,” the public prosecutor said.
“A case marked as ‘urgent’ has been filed for the lagoon blaze, and the necessary information has been sent to judicial officials, and the human agents involved have been identified,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Anzali prosecutor explained that under the law, committing an act of arson on natural territories is considered an offense, and that those conducting arson attacks with the aim of waging Muharebeh (war against God) or breaching the peace will receive the death penalty.

Fire broke out at Anzali Lagoon on Monday and kept raging until Tuesday.

These fires are believed to be set caused by profiteers with the aim of seizing the land around the lagoon.

Anzali Lagoon is a coastal wetland in the Caspian Sea. It is home to a large number of birds coming to Iran from neighboring countries each year.

Alireza Zakani Officially Appointed as Tehran Mayor

Alireza Zakani Tehran Mayor

“Today, the interior minister signed mandates appointing the mayors of some of the country’s cities, among them the mandate for Zakani,” said Mahdi Chamran, the head of the Tehran City Council.

“Accordingly, Zakani will take part in a meeting of the Tehran City Council next Sunday and officially start his work at the municipality,” he added.

The Tehran City Council has picked Zakani as the Tehran Mayor with 18 votes.

This comes as, under the law, Zakani’s major, i.e., Nuclear Medicine, is not among authorized academic fields for the post of Mayor.

It had been announced earlier that the government was against the appointment of Zakani as Mayor, a story denied by the City Council.

The country’s Inspectorate General had earlier also stressed in a letter to Chamran that regulations on choosing mayors should be taken into account, including the executive bylaw which stipulates the requirements for assuming the post of mayor.

It is also stipulated in the letter that the City Council should avoid making decisions under political pressure and the influence of partisan affairs as well as factional considerations that would be against the good of the public and citizens’ interests.

Alireza Zakani used to serve as the head of the University Students’ Basij Organization as well as a member of Parliament during the seventh, eighth, ninth and eleventh tenures of the legislature.

He was the head of the Parliament’s Research Center and also ran for president in 2021 June elections.

Iran FM: Tehran not to Give in to US Pressures

Amir Abdollahian the US is responsible for the current situation regarding the matter because it illegally withdrew from the nuclear deal and reinstated oppressive sanctions on Iran.

He also urged Europe to play a constructive role and adopt a calculated stance tin this regard.

Amir Abdollahian added European governments are also partly to blame because they failed to redress the US measure, saying the US and the European signatories to the nuclear deal must return to full compliance with the 2015 agreement otherwise known as the JCPOA.

Referring to the recent Vienna talks over Iran’s nuclear program, he said Iran will participate in talks that will produce tangible results and fulfill the rights and interests of the Iranian people.

He also noted that US President Joe Biden has done nothing to make up for his predecessor’s illegal moves and he’s going down the same path, using sanctions as a tool to pressure Iran.

Former US president Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the JCPOA in 2018 and reinstated sanctions after sanctions on Iran.

The European parties to the nuclear deal did not take any tangible measures to reverse that except for crafting a mechanism known as INSTEX that they said would, as an alternative to Swift, enable Iran do international transactions. Iran has repeatedly said INSTEX was not meaningfully helpful. The mechanism was in fact meant to only facilitate medicine imports into Iran.

Later, Tehran began to scale down its commitments under the JCPOA to force the other sides to follow through their obligations. It now says it will return to full compliance only after the US removes all the sanctions in one go and return to the JCPOA.

New Consignment of Covid-19 Vaccine Arrives in Iran

“The customs proceedings [of the vaccine shipment] were immediately performed right after the cargo was unloaded from the flight before the vaccines were delivered to the Ministry of Health and Medical treatment,” said Mehrdad Jamal Aronaghi, the deputy chief of the Iranian Customs Administration.

He said the new shipment brings to more than 30 million doses the number of imported Covid vaccines.

The Iranian government was under fire for a snail-paced vaccination drive in the initial stages of the national Covid-19 inoculation plan.

According to the health ministry, around 27 million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been injected in the country so far.

The total coronavirus caseload in Iran has crossed the five million-mark. Overall deaths have surpassed 108,000.

Iran has taken a tough line on drugs. The UN has repeatedly praised Iran’s efforts to fight drug trafficking.

Report: US Leaves Syria Bases

One base is in Deir el-Zour province. It’s near Deir el-Zour’s oil wells. The other two bases are in Hasakah province.

The US deployed troops to Syria during the conflict that broke out in the country following the 2011 anti-government protests.

Syria repeatedly condemned the troop deployments by Washington as illegal because the US set up makeshift bases in the Arab country without permission from Damascus.

The US says it intervened in Syria to prevent Daesh from gaining access to its oil. But Syrian authorities have repeatedly accused US forces of stealing Syrian crude.

Raisi Calls for Increased Trade with Neighboring Countries

“The government’s diplomacy should be most active with regard to neighboring countries and everyone should work to increase trade and economic cooperation with neighboring countries. That’s because there are appropriate grounds for strengthening these exchanges and increasing Iran’s share in regional trade,” Raisi said during the Wednesday cabinet meeting.

The president then touched on the developments in Afghanistan saying what the country has witnessed over the past two decades is a clear instance of “aggression” and “open violation of human rights”.

The president added that the record of US presence in different countries across the world has always undermined peace, security and stability.

“Today Americans, under some pretexts, launch propaganda against our country. … I call on the relevant bodies, including the national broadcaster [IRIB] to give a proper response to their accusations and labelling.”

Raisi also addressed the issue of the coronavirus pandemic in Iran. He praised authorities for the increased rate of vaccinations but noted that this is not enough. He said a desired level of public vaccinations is a must before reopening of businesses, schools, etc.

“Thanks to the efforts of the health ministry and cooperation of relevant authorities, the number of vaccination centers have increased two to three-fold. We hope, after supplying the needed doses of vaccine through imports and domestic production, educational centers can reopen as soon as possible,” he said.

“Speedboat hits South Pars Platform in Persian Gulf”

The personnel on the platform took action swiftly and brought the situation under control.

The accident caused no casualties. Nor was the rig damaged.

But pictures of the vessel published by Fars News Agency showed the sides of the hull below the deck were cut through on impact.

It’s business as usual now there and Platform B is producing gas.

South Pars is the world’s largest national gas field shared by Iran and Qatar.

Admiral Irani said Iran, as an independent nation, will safeguard its maritime borders and territories.

He however noted that Iran has always been a flag bearer of peace and friendship. Iranian armed forces convey a message to the enemy when they get together that says “free nations will confront you with their heads held high and will make you lose face”, Admiral Irani added.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the diving competitions of the International Army Games, 2021. Irani said this is the first time Iran is hosting the International Army Games and it hopes to host more tournaments of the type in the future.

“Iran Capable of Destroying Airborne Targets at 200km Range”

“We have created cutting edge capabilities and equipment,” Brigadier General Alireza Sabahifard said during a ceremony to mark the 14th anniversary of the establishment of the force.

“Today, Iran’s air defense force is the strongest in the region and is among those, which stand out in the world. Our enemies know about these capabilities and exactly this has led to a change in their choice of words and behavior.”

The general stressed that Iranian forces have realized these achievements despite the limitations, threats and sanctions Iran has faced since the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979.

“The air defense force is developing every day and is swiftly advancing and is using 100 percent domestically-manufactured equipment. Today, we can detect, find, and if we deem it necessary, destroy, any aircraft, regardless of its application,” the general noted.

He also warned enemies that any “unwise” decision to cross Iran’s red lines will bring them a “humiliating defeat”.

Meanwhile, the general announced the launch of the domestic Moragheb (sentinel) radar as well as the production of Alborz 3-dimensional radar. The latter, he said has a maximum range of 450 kilometers and can detect 300 targets simultaneously.
