Iran urges UN to do more to end Yemen war

Ali Asghar Khaji made the call during a meeting with Norway’s special envoy for Yemen Ms. Kjersti Tromsdal in Tehran.

Ms. Tromsdal also spoke of Norway’s non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, stressing that the Yemen crisis tops the
agenda of the world body.

She added that Norway will continue efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis and reaffirms its support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s special envoy for the Yemeni affairs.

Khaji and Ms. Tromsdal further discussed latest developments inside and outside Yemen. They held talks over areas of mutual cooperation between Iran and Norway with regard to the Yemen crisis.

The two diplomats also exchanged views over various issues and aspects of the Yemen crisis and ways of achieving peace and ending the crisis.

Iran has repeatedly called for an end to the Saudi-led war on Yemen. Tehran believes that the crisis in the war-torn country can only be resolved through dialog among Yemeni factions and without foreign interference.

Powerful quake jolts Iran’s Kerman Province

Two Quakes Hit Iran as Fight against COVID-19 Goes On

The quake happened at 17:05 local time at the depth of 12 kilometers with its epicenter being 16 kilometers from Sirch. The manager of Kerman’s Red Crescent Society has said a team of experts have been sent to the quake zone to assess possible damage.

Reza Fallah however noted that there are
no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Hospitals in Kerman Province are also on alert following the tremor.

Iran is quake prone and much of its territory is criss-crossed by faultlines. The country has seen several massive quakes in recent centuries with some causing huge casualties and damage.

US says has many scenarios for ‘Russian invasion’ of Ukraine

She refused to elaborate on what exactly they were, but promised that Washington and its allies are ready to inflict high costs on Russia if it acts aggressively.

“I would simply say that our commitment and the conversation that we have with our allies is around inflicting very sharp pain very fast, if Russia makes this move in any form,” Nuland said.

The under-secretary went on to note that specific sanctions imposed against Russia by the US and European partners might be different. She explained that some things are not as easy to do for the Europeans as they are for the US and vice versa.

Russian operatives have been deployed to two breakaway regions in the east of Ukraine to create a false-flag operation as pretext for an invasion, several US news outlets have reported, citing an anonymous American official.

A “group of operatives” trained in urban warfare and use of explosives has been sent to “carry out acts of sabotage against Russia’s own proxy forces”, CNN claimed, quoting an anonymous US official. CNN also reported US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had “hinted” at this intelligence on Thursday at the White House press briefing.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby referred to these claims at his own briefing on Friday, but then added the US assessment is that Russia hasn’t yet decided whether to invade.

After Western media carried reports, on Friday, citing unnamed US officials, claiming that Russia is preparing a “false flag” incident in order to invade Ukraine, the Kremlin has dismissed them as baseless and unfounded rumors.

“So far, all these statements have been unsubstantiated and not backed up by anything,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS news agency, when asked about the stories making the rounds.

Washington has accused Moscow of planning to invade Ukraine for weeks now, though the Kremlin rejected this as “fake news.”

Washington’s claims come after a week of high-level talks with Russia, NATO and the OSCE to discuss Moscow’s proposals for improving collective security in Europe. The US and its allies rejected Russia’s key proposals out of hand.

On Friday, the New York Times reported the US is mulling a strategy of subverting Russia’s aims, without direct involvement, in case it invades Ukraine, adding that it may involve arming and training Ukrainian fighters in Europe. American President Joe Biden has apparently not made up his mind about what his government would do in the event that Moscow occupies the former Soviet republic, the newspaper claims. However, it insists that officials have come up with a possible US response in case an attack does take place. Washington apparently believes that Ukraine does not stand a chance against a potential Russian invading force in an open battle and it instead has focused on supporting Ukrainian “guerrilla” warfare on territory that could be occupied by Moscow, according to the daily.

America’s CIA has been overseeing a covert training program for members of Ukraine’s special forces in preparation for a potential conflict, former US intelligence and national security officials have reportedly claimed. The mission has supposedly been underway since Russia’s 2014 re-absorption of Crimea and is based at an undisclosed facility in the southern US, Yahoo News revealed on Thursday.

Iran minister: Economic deals with China to be finalized soon

“To implement the Sino-Iranian Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, we have to sign contracts on bilateral cooperation in the different sectors of energy, industry and mine, as well as research and technology,” said the minister, adding different ministries have been following up the related processes and the contracts are about to be finalized.

In March 2021, Tehran and Beijing inked the comprehensive agreement in an effort to boost their cooperation over a range of issues including trade.

Khandouzi said the 13th government puts great emphasis on Iran’s cooperation with its strategic partners in the economic sector, further saying, “We are keen to have long-term strategic cooperation with all allied countries.”

He pointed to the ongoing visit of Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian to China, calling it a promising step toward striking a host of deals with China.

Amir Abdollahian and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday announced the launch of the 25-year cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening economic and political ties.

“We agreed to announce today as the date to begin implementing the comprehensive agreement on strategic partnership” between Iran and China, Amir Abdollahian said, after concluding detailed discussions on Sino-Iranian cooperation with Wang in China.

Amir Abdollahian described as significant the 25-year partnership agreement, underlining that the implementation of the document would be an important event and a fundamental change in Tehran-Beijing ties.

Iranian police crackdown on thugs in Tehran

A police commander said 175 thugs were arrested. Colonel Payam Kaviani added that 17 cold weapons such as daggers and swords were seized from the detainees.

Kaviani added that over 20 businesses were shut down as ordered by the judiciary because they had been turned to hangouts for the thugs.

He added that the Iranian police will not allow anyone to disturb people’s peace of mind with criminal activities.

US Secret Service taking Iran Trump threats seriously

“The US Secret Service takes all threats to our protectees seriously,” Secret Service spokesperson Justine Whelan told Newsweek.

But as per protocol, she would not get into detail about the process implemented to vet potential threats.

“In order to maintain operation security,” Whelan added, “the Secret Service does not discuss the means and methods used to conduct our protective operations or matters of protective intelligence.”

While open calls for retribution against the former president and his top officials have emerged steadily since the Jan. 2020 airstrike that killed General Soleimani along with the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces at Baghdad International Airport, an uptick has manifested in the recent weeks surrounding the two-year anniversary of the event.

Some threats have been issued in the form of public speeches, such as when Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi demanded Trump “must be brought to justice, retribution must be carried out” against him and inner circle figures such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during an address earlier this year.

“If the mechanism for a fair trial of Mr. Trump, Pompeo and other criminals is provided, they will be punished for their shameful acts in a fair trial for committing this horrific crime,” Raisi said, adding, “If not, I tell all American statesmen that do not doubt that revenge will come.”

Another warning came via an animated video published Thursday by the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The short clip depicts an imagined air raid in Call of Duty-like fashion involving spy drones and warplanes against Trump and his former officials as they play golf at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

“Soleimani’s murder and the one who gave the order will pay the price,” reads a message seen in the video.

While Trump claimed the assassination was commissioned to prevent presumably imminent attacks on US personnel across the region, allegedly plotted by Gen. Soleimani, no evidence to back up such an assessment has ever emerged.

The assassination prompted an uproar in Iraq, with the country’s parliament adopting a non-binding resolution demanding the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country shortly after the killing.

Iran itself responded with a volley of ballistic missiles that hit two US-occupied bases in Iraq. While no US soldiers were reported killed in the strikes, some 110 received traumatic brain injuries.

Heavy fog descends in Iran’s Khuzestan province

Khuzestan’s meteorological organization said the heavy fog has descended in the northern and central parts of the province and its density is different in various areas.

A traffic police official said the foggy weather
has made driving dangerous outside cities, adding that the Ahvaz-Andimeshk and
Mollasani-Shoushatr roads are where people face more risk.

He urged people in Khuzestan to avoid unnecessary travels and stick to safety guidelines such as using fog lights and driving at safe speeds.

This comes as since Thursday night many parts of Iran have been hit by flooding and heavy snowfalls.

Iran annual petrochemical production capacity to hit 100m tons

Making the prediction in a meeting with the heads of petrochemical companies in Assaluyeh, southern Iran, Morteza Shahmirzaei added the country will have a bright future as it is moving toward development.

He said 68 petrochemical complexes having an annual nominal capacity of around 90 million tons are currently working in the country, reiterating that due to the outlined plans the production is expected to touch 100 million tons by late March 2023.

The deputy oil minister pledged full support for the petrochemical companies of the Pars Special Economic Energy Zone (PSEEZ), saying the NPC will help facilitate operations and remove obstacles to production.

He assured that some problems would be resolved in the shortest possible time through cooperation between the National Petrochemical Company and Pars Special Economic Energy Zone.

US base in Iraq comes under drone attack

A number of combat drones hit the military compound, which lies 64 kilometers (40 miles) north of Baghdad, on Saturday morning.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and the extent of damage inflicted.

Sirens immediately sounded at the military compound, and the sound of gunfire could be heard from the site.

The drone attack also sent dense plumes of smoke rising above the targeted area.

Alarms and calls in English were also heard, asking the military personnel inside the base to take shelter and stay away from the scene.

Sabereen News, citing an unnamed security source, noted that quadcopter and fixed-wing drones hit an office belonging to American arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin Corporation inside the Balad Air Base, and the aircraft returned to their launch pads after the air raid.

A statement released by the Security Media Cell, affiliated with the Iraqi prime minister’s office, later said three drones approached the southern flank of the air base on Saturday morning.

The statement added that C-RAM and air defense systems detected the aircraft, and fired shots to force them off the airspace above the Balad Air base.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Thursday, four rockets were fired towards Baghdad’s heavily-fortified Green Zone.

The attacks come as anti-American sentiments have been on the rise in Iraq since the assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and his Iraqi trenchmate Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, second-in-command of the PMU, as well as their companions in a US drone strike authorized by former US president Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Two days after the attack, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill that requires the government to end the presence of all foreign military forces led by the US in the country.

Both commanders were highly revered across the Middle East because of their key role in fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

On January 8, 2020, the IRGC targeted the US-run Ain al-Asad in Iraq’s western province of Anbar by launching a volley of missiles in retaliation.

According to the Pentagon, more than 100 American forces suffered “traumatic brain injuries” during the counterstrike on the base.

Iran has described the missile attack on Ain al-Assad as a “first slap”.

US says working on laser weapons in ME, citing Iran activity

“There is a growth in the missile defense force and in cruise missiles and Iranian UAVs and the proliferation of those UAVs throughout the region,” Cooper told a conference at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

“There has been a dramatic uptick in the UAV activity in the region: it is significantly different,” he added.

In response, the Fifth Fleet is deploying and developing the use of laser, or directed energy weapons on its warships in the region, Cooper said, adding that he was not going to reveal any details of the work.

The US Navy is developing “laser weapons on warships in the region. This is an area we are working on pretty vibrantly. For understandable reasons, I am not going to talk about it”, Cooper continued.

Starting in September of 2021, the Fifth Fleet activated Task Force 59 as its unmanned vehicles and intelligence task force in the region operated out of Bahrain and Jordan. The operation had already “exceeded our every expectation” with unmanned sea vehicles launched out of the port of Akaba in the southwestern tip of Jordan capable of functioning for up to 33 days at a time, Cooper noted.
