Russia raps US for creating obstacles to saving JCPOA

Russia FM Sergei Lavrov

“Certain obstacles have been mounted here, mostly because of the US that has been bargaining for some additional clauses to be able to modify the initial idea and contents [of the JCPOA] approved by the UN Security Council,” Russia’s top diplomat stated following talks with his Bahraini counterpart Abdel Latif Bin Rashed Al Zayani.

Moscow proceeds from the idea that it would be just “to revive the JCPOA without any omissions or additions,” Lavrov concluded.

Iran insists that the nuclear talks must lead to the removal of all American sanctions that were imposed against Tehran following Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the landmark agreement in May 2018. Tehran has also demanded credible guarantees that Washington will not abandon the deal again.

Iranian FM says he sent message to US vice president

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hosseni Amir Abdollahian

Hossein Amir Abdollahian added that he asked her why the US keeps saying it cannot guarantee the adherence of the next administration to a deal over Iran’s nuclear program.

Amir Abollahian noted that in Iran, the previous administration accepted the nuclear deal, JCPOA, but the current administration did not say it wouldn’t abide by the agreement.

According to Amir Abdollahian, the current Iranian administration however called for talks.

He also said that in Munich, senior US officials were willing to hold direct talks with him in hopes of resolving the current differences and pressing ahead with the Vienna talks.

Amir Abdollahian however said Iran needs to see a change in behavior on the part of the US.

The Iranian foreign minister said some critics ask the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi why it seeks to return to the JCPOA, and that the administration’s response is “adherence to commitments is on our agenda”.

Iranian expert: Highly likely IAEA board to issue anti-Iran resolution

IAEA

In the report the IAEA secretary general said Iran has failed to give technically credible responses to the agency as to the discovery of nuclear traces outside Tehran.

Hassen Beheshtipour, told Khabaronline news outlet, the report is by any metric negative and that the IAEA expected Iran to respond to its questions in the past three months.

Beheshtipour added that Iran’s responses failed to convince the agency.

He also said the effect of the IAEA report will be seen in the meeting of the Board of Governors which will happen in the next few days.

Beheshtipour noted that the current anti-Iran atmosphere will increase the likelihood of the approval of a resolution against Iran at the board.

He said the IAEA statutes stipulate that all 35 members of the board must vote yes for a resolution to be approved, but since 2006-2007 when the body issued a resolution against Iran and sent the country’s case to the UN Security Council, the motion was approved by a majority vote, not a full one.

Beheshtipour said the approval of a new resolution will mark the beginning of efforts to open a new file against Iran. Beheshtipour further said all the pages of such a file will constitute documentation against the Islamic Republic and that our description of such resolutions as oppressive or unacceptable will have no effect on them whatsoever.

He however stressed that the resolutions will have no economic impact because the economic situation in Iran could not be worse than what it is now.

The political expert noted that in any case, Iran must try to not let history repeat itself.

The funeral happened on Tuesday morning in Shah Cheragh Shrine of Shriaz.

Covid kills 5 people in Iran a day after daily death toll hits record low

The tally also shows that 232 people have tested positive for the Coronavirus from Monday to Tuesday.

The daily death toll on Monday was 2, which is the lowest since the start of the pandemic in Iran over two years ago.

A downward trend in Covid deaths and infections has held for the past three weeks. Authorities attribute this to a nationwide vaccination campaign and also people’s observance of health protocols.

The number of Covid vaccine doses administered so far is inching toward the 150 million mark.

On Monday, the head of Iran’s scientific committee for Covid said that in the first three months after getting two shots of vaccine, people are 70 percent immune to the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus and its sub-strains and after six months, the immunity decreases to 50-60 percent.

He also said that’s why authorities are underlining the need for people to get their booster shots.

Iran says IAEA report unfair and not reflecting realities

Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh

Saeed Khatibzadeh says the report is identical to the one IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi hastily delivered to the European Parliament, before the third round of negotiations with Iran.

He said the same haste is also seen in the latest report, which he dismissed as “unfair”.

Khatibzadeh also said Tehran fears that pressure by the Israeli regime and others push the report toward politicization, warning that everyone has witnessed acts of interference and espionage by the regime, and its disruptions, whenever a breakthrough was near at hand in the Vienna talks between Tehran and world powers.

The spokesman also dismissed comments by some US officials, which he said are made in response to the domestic issues of the country.

He said what matters for Iran is the message conveyed through the normal channels between Tehran and Washington, stressing that the US has so far failed to offer the responses expected by Iran.

He said an agreement on revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action can be finalized if the US ends it hesitation and makes a political decision in response to the initiatives tabled by Iran and Europe.

Khatibzadeh further stressed that the focus of the current negotiations between US and Iran is the latter’s economic benefits from a deal, the relevant guarantees, and removal of all elements of the US maximum pressure campaign against Iran.

He noted that Iran does not reduce the outstanding issues to the removal of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps from the US blacklist of terror organizations.

The spokesman also talked about the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage, saying agreements with Saudi Arabia on the subject have been realized.

He added that the timing for the 6th round of talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia is not yet decided and agreements on other areas are pending more discussions.

Khatibzadeh also touched on the detention of Greek oil tankers by Iran in the Persian Gulf, saying Athens should use legal channels rather than clamor to get its ships released.

He said Iran also went for the diplomatic channels even after its tanker was confiscated illegally by Greece.

The spokesman said Iran’s foreign minister held a phone call with his Greek counterpart, but Athens showed that it attaches greater significance to the “orders from a third party”.

He said Athens should pay attention to the fact that neither the US, nor a third party cares about Iran-Greece ties, which he said have been “respectful”, so far, and should remain so.

The spokesman also talked about the Ukraine crisis, saying Tehran is ready to host talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian negotiator slams IAEA for Iran report leakage

Iran nuclear programe

Mikhail Ulyanov wrote in a tweet, “As always, the IAEA Director General’s reports on Iran were immediately leaked to mass media today. We can expect a lot of speculations in the days to come and heated debates in the IAEA Board of Governors next week.”

The IAEA has claimed in its report that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium had grown to more than 18 times the limit laid out in the 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers.

Iran’s permanent representative to the Vienna-based organization, Mohammad Reza Ghaebi, said the report is one-sided and fails to reflect Iran’s extensive cooperation with the IAEA.

The Russian diplomat had warned days ago that the U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration tries to preserve some sanctions imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump against Iran.

In a tweet on Friday, Ulyanov wrote, “The Vienna Talks on JCPOA remain on hold for 2.5 months. Looks like the U.S. tries to preserve some sanctions imposed by D. Trump on Iran. Washington needs to demonstrate a more constructive and businesslike approach if is really committed to nuclear #nonproliferation,” he added.

Several rounds of negotiations between Iran and the P4+1 group of countries, namely Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, have been held in the Austrian capital, Vienna, since April 2021. However, negotiations to remove anti-Iranian sanctions have been stalled for about two months.

Iran building collapse death toll rises to 36

Iran building collapse

As parts of the multiple-story building collapsed on Tuesday, the search operation has been going slowly and carefully.

Medics and rescue teams have been working round the clock to assist with rescue and relief efforts.

The exact number of people trapped under the rubble is unknown, but unofficial figures put it at over 80.

Faulty construction practices have been blamed for the collapse of the recently-constructed Metropol commercial building, but an investigation is underway to decide what caused the incident.

Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi had earlier indicated that the building had a license for only six stories, but the contractors violated the permit and constructed a ten-story building.

Iran to send consular delegation to Saudi Arabia during Hajj pilgrimage

Hajj

According to Iranian Students’ News Agency, ISNA, the 6-member consular delegation is being dispatched to provide consular services, seeing that neither the Iranian embassy in Riyadh, nor the Iranian consulate in Jeddah are active following the 2015 incidents during the pilgrimage.

Iran had also sent consular delegations to Saudi Arabia during Hajj pilgrimage over the past years.

The pilgrimage has been reportedly among the main topics discussed between Iran and Saudi Arabia during their talks in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

This year’s Hajj pilgrimage is scheduled to being on July 7.

Iran slams IAEA latest report as unilateral and unfair

IAEA

Mohammad Reza Ghaebi says Rafael Grossi’s report is unilateral and “unfairly” ignores Iran’s arguments.

Grossi said in one of the reports he published Monday that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles is now 18 times more than the limits set out in the 2015 nuclear deal adding that Iran has failed to give “valid technical” answers to the agency’s questions regarding nuclear material discovered at its sites over the past three years.

The IAEA had earlier asked Iran to submit documents on three additional sites and answer the agency’s questions regarding nuclear activity there.

Tehran said in early April that the documents had been sent to the IAEA and they should file their final report after new in-person investigations at the sites.

Ghaebi said Iran held several rounds of talks including three experts meetings, with the agency to address its concerns despite believing that the anti-Iran allegations are based on “fabricated information” handed to the agency by Israel and some other hostile countries.

The aim, he said, was to resolve the issue by submitting technical details to the agency.

“The report by the IAEA director general does not reflect the wide-ranging cooperation of Iran with the agency. The conclusion of the report is identical to the one by the director general in the European Parliament, even before the end of the predicted stages [of talks] in the joint statement [with Iran], and before the third round of the technical talks,” he said.

Ghaebi called Grossi’s conclusions “pre-arranged” and his approach as “unconstructive”, stressing that such reports damage relations and cooperation with Iran and play into the hands of opponents of revival of the 2015 nuclear deal.

The Iranian official also talked about Grossi’s second report on Monday that dealt with Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal.

Ghaebi stressed that Iran’s nuclear activities are in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty, but the data from the IAEA’s cameras at Iranian sites will not be available to the agency before an agreement with the P4+1 on revival of the nuclear deal.
