‘Over 6,000 pilgrims entering Iraq from Iran’s Mehran border crossing daily’

Iranian pilgrims

Ali Abbas Shafiei, governor of Mehran, told Mehr News Agency that every day, some 12,000 people use the border crossing in the Western Iranian city, which was reopened in June 2020 following its closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Out of them, over 6,000 are the pilgrims who enter Iraq, which hosts the holy shrine of Imam Hussein and other revered Shia Muslim figures.

He said Mehran had made all the infrastructural facilities for temporarily hosting the pilgrims heading for Iraq.

Pilgrims have been increasingly visiting Iraq since the start of the Islamic calendar month of Muharram, when Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam.

Iraq has lifted the visa requirements for Iranian pilgrims.

Iraq is currently making preparations for Arba’een, the fortieth day since the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in Karbala in 680.

In what has been known as the world’s largest gathering, millions of Muslim mourners set out each year on a symbolic 80-kilometer-long walk that begins from the holy city of Najaf in Iraq to the holy city of Karbala, which is home to Imam Hussein’s shrine.

Russia urges US to fulfill legal obligations concerning chemical weapons

Chemical Weapons

“Allegations that Russia allegedly possesses chemical weapons are false. Washington is well aware that in 2017 our country completely eliminated the national stocks of chemical warfare agents. This fact has been officially confirmed by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,” the embassy said in a statement on Telegram.

The statement was issued in response to claims made by the US State Department that chemical weapons were allegedly used against Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny.

The Russian embassy in the US recalled that it is the United States that remains the only country that has not yet eliminated its chemical arsenal.

“We call on Washington to stop evading fulfillment of its international legal obligations, and also not to interfere in domestic Russian affairs,” the Russian diplomatic mission added.

In January 2021, Navalny was arrested in Moscow upon his arrival from Germany, where he received medical treatment for alleged poisoning in Russia. A court rescinded his suspended sentence in the 2014 Yves Rocher fraud case over multiple breaches of probation, and sentenced him to 2.5 years in prison.

In March 2022, Navalny was sentenced to additional nine years in prison for fraud and contempt of court.

Iran Tourism: A cup of tea at Chalous’ Chai-Khoran Palace

Chalous’ Chai-Khoran Palace

The history of Chalous’ Chay-Khoran Palace

At the time when the Chai-Khoran Palace was built, tea was new to Iran. Drinking tea became common over time and was slowly ingrained in Iranian culture.

Reza Shah Pahlavi valued that tradition when he reigned over Iran. He ordered that a palace be built to preserve the culture of tea drinking in the country. While commuting, he usually stopped by at the palace, hence the name Chai-Khoran Building (chai means tea in Persian) refers to this.

The architecture and land use of the Chai-Khoran Palace

After the Islamic Revolution, the Chai-Khoran Palace was used as a library for 25 years, and that is why in Chalous, many still refer to the building as a library.

All land to the north of the palace, which is now the Emamat Educational, Cultural, and Reception Center, was the garden of the palace, which is wooded. But now the palace has been handed over to the private sector.

Kasnavi Yazdi, the private investor in the palace, says, “Only the alcove of the building is habitable. Other parts aren’t. Rooms inside the palace, which are today cafes and restaurants, used to be guest rooms. The entry to the palace on the south lane was built in Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s era (the last Shah of Iran before the Islamic Revolution of 1979) and essentially, the building was used as a residence in that time. There is a small airstrip to the north of the palace, and there are swimming pools and streams to the south and around it. The major materials used in its construction are stones and bricks, and the rooftop is tiled.”

It is now almost four months since the palace was opened to citizens and tourists. And its former glory has returned to the building. It now hosts visitors as a historical, tourist, and reception complex with a luxury restaurant, coffee shop, and a pleasant tea house.

Also, a space has been arranged to serve as a location for photography and filming, and for special events, so that good memories are made for the people of our land.

In fact, the Chai-Khoran Palace is probably Iran’s sole palace-restaurant, which ranks as a palace but can be used to host events and for cultural purposes.

Have you savored your tea? Are you returning from the seaside or heading there now? It is now time to relish a cup of coffee in the Chai-Khoran Palace.

Iran, China discuss security ties, fight against terrorism

Mohammad Keshavarz-Zadeh and Cheng Guoping

In a tweet, Iran’s Ambassador to China Mohammad Keshavarz-Zadeh said he met with External Security Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Cheng Guoping to discuss bilateral ties.

He said relations between Tehran and Beijing would “find new dimensions” in light of the Islamic Republic’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

“With Iran’s full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, ties between the two countries will find new dimensions with regards to the fight against the three evil phenomena: Extremism, separatism, and organized terrorism.”

Iran’s bid to become a full member of the SCO was approved after almost 15 years by the bloc’s seven permanent members in September, 2021. The organization accounts for about one-third of the world’s land and exports trillions of dollars annually.

The technical and legal process of the membership bid — which may take up to two years — is currently in progress.

Tehran and Beijing already enjoy flourishing relations. They have signed a 25-year strategic partnership, which brings the pair closer in many fields ranging from economy to politics and culture.

Iran nuclear chief: IAEA disproportionately focused on Tehran’s nuclear work

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami

Mohammad Eslami the head of the Atom Energy Organization of Iran says the nuclear fuel cycle is an element of power in today’s world, stressing that the focus by the western powers on Iran’s nuclear capability and use of nuclear bomb as a catch phrase is a pretext to prevent Iran from gaining full access to the nuclear technology.

The AEOI chief added that nuclear energy has nothing to do with an A-bomb and enables key scientific achievements.

He said a case in point is Iran’s ongoing work on molecular research on heavy water, which led to production of newborn screening drops in the recent months.

He also talked about the unveiling of the strategic development document of the AEOI back in March.

Eslami said the document calls for training of at least 20,000 experts in the nuclear field in the next 20 years and how the nuclear technology can affect different dimensions of people’s ordinary life.

The nuclear chief then announced a joint plan with the Education Ministry to open elementary schools for relevant training in the cities with nuclear facilities.

This, he said, is aimed at laying the ground to expand nuclear capability in the future.

‘Value of Iran-Iraq trade to reach $9bn mark by year end despite US sanctions’

Iran Trade

In an interview with ILNA, Issa Al-e Es’haq said Iran was expanding trade with its neighbors under President Ebrahim Raisi, and that there were plans for a boost in economic exchanges with Pakistan, Armenia and Turkey.

He said between 6 to 7 million tons of goods had been exported to Iraq over the past four months and the 9-billion-dollar mark in the value of trade between the two neighbors would materialize by the end of the current Persian calendar year, which will end on March 20, 2023.

The business official also pointed to the negotiations underway to secure a revival of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and said a potential revitalization of the agreement, which would lift the US sanctions, would remove many restrictions currently hindering Iran’s trade ties with other countries.

If the talks collapse, he added, Iran will continue promoting trade cooperation with neighbors, something which is already on track and goes ahead smoothly.

On ties with China, Al-e Es’haq said Tehran-Beijing relations would continue to grow even if the sanctions on Iran was removed and the country was given access to European markets.

Iran daily: One year into Raisi govt., many election pledges yet to be fulfilled

President Ebrahim Raisi

The daily says despite pledges by the Raisi administration, government bodies are yet to come into harmony, with conflicts of interests blocking final decisions on the ratifications by the departments.

The paper touched on Raisi’s pre-election pledge to construct four million residential apartments in one year, using the lands owned by different state bodies, and even the presidential directive for the allocation of state-held land to the national housing movement.

The paper said the project was obstructed by the strong resistance of different ministries and was effectively shelved.

Etelaat said other similar pledges including the promise to increase renovation loans for rural housing and the plan to rank teachers to adjust their payments also remain to be fulfilled, amid disagreements among different state bodies.
