Iran rejects UN rights resolution, raps mandate of special rapporteur

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani

Kanaani said the resolution was drawn up and approved based on a selective, spiteful and confrontational attitude and with political goals.

He added that Tehran also condemns the decision to extend the mandate of the special rapporteur on Iran.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that prejudices and hasty judgments included in the resolution, which was drafted and approved with the support of some Western countries and with the aim of undermining the human rights progress in the Islamic Republic of Iran, cause the resolution to lose all shreds of credibility.

He said the resolution was adopted based on a selective, biased and confrontational approach to the issue of human rights.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman underlined that the Human Rights Council is the main body of the UN to promote and support human rights based on cooperation and dialogue and serves as a venue for human rights discourse among governments, NGOs and other beneficiaries.

He went on to say that using the council as a tool and for political purposes is an approach through which Western countries have undermined the validity of the body’s decisions and resolutions.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said countries which themselves violate the rights of other nations are in no position to act as the claimant or the judge regarding human rights.

Ayatollah Khamenei: Removal of hijab is politically and religiously banned

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

He added that if those who remove their headscarves in public knew who is behind this whole scenario, they would not do it.

Ayatollah Khanenei was referring to the removal of hijab by some girls and women in violation of the dress code of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The leader made the remarks on Tuesday in a meeting with a group of Iranian officials.

He also said the world is on the verge of a major upheaval and this means a shift in the international order.

Ayatollah Khamenei said, “I want to announce today that fortunately, this global upheaval will weaken the enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

He noted that developments are taking place in the world rapidly and dramatically and “we must build up momentum in our foreign policy”.

Ayatollah Khamenei further spoke about Iran’s economic woes, saying a problem that Iran has been grappling with is the dollar and sticking to the foreign currency.

He said, “Some countries have set aside the dollar and are doing their transactions through other channels… and they are better off now”.

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that one duty of all citizens is to avoid strengthening the rivals of the rial.

Elsewhere, in his remarks, the leader turned to the issue of corruption in Iran. He said fighting corruption is a must for all.

He underlined that corruption makes people disappointed and must be tackled.

He then referred to inflation, saying a minority benefits from soaring prices and fill their pockets at the expense of others. This, Ayatollah Khamenei noted, breeds corruption.

He however underscored that Iran has many possibilities for the purpose of fixing the problem such as economic infrastructure, human workforce, highly-motivated youth, scientific and technological capabilities, and new ideas, which all can be used to contain inflation.

The leader said economic problems can be solved through relations with foreign nations, noting however that foreign countries are not limited to the US and a few European countries.

Iran sees rising Covid-19 deaths

COVID in Iran

“A sum of 953 new patients infected with COVID-19 have been identified in the country based on confirmed diagnosis criteria during the past 24 hours,” the Iranian Health Ministry’s Public Relations Center said on Tuesday, and added, “483 patients have been hospitalized during the same time span.”

It further announced that the total number of COVID-19 patients has increased to 7,593,921.

“Unfortunately, 27 patients have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, increasing the number of the dead to 145,436,” the ministry noted.

It expressed satisfaction that 7,347,278 coronavirus patients have recovered or been discharged from hospitals so far.

The center went on to say that 749 cases infected with COVID-19 are in critical conditions.

It added that 55,941,653 coronavirus diagnosis tests have so far been carried out across the country.

The health ministry public relations warned that 19 cities are red, 45 cities are orange, 233 cities are yellow, and 151 cities are blue.

20 female students admitted to hospital with respiratory symptoms in Tabriz, Iran

Iran School Girls

Asghar Jafari said the students suffered shortness of breath at a school in the Baghmisheh Township of Tabriz and ambulances were dispatched to take them to a hospital.

Jafari added that the students’ health condition is stable.

A number of girl schools in Iran were the scene of poisoning incidents that caused panic among students and their families before the Nowruz holidays.

What happened in Tabriz is the first similar incident in the new Iranian year.

Iranian officials began a thorough investigation into the poisonings to establish their exact cause.

The leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei demanded harsh punishment for those responsible if it is proved that the poisonings are the result of an act with criminal intent.

Iran to help Syria beef up its air defense

Iran Air Defense

The Iranian defense ministry’s deputy for international affairs said after the arms embargo on Iran was removed in October 2020, the country has witnessed a hike in demands for its armaments.

He added that Iran now considers itself as duty-bound to assist Syria in strengthening its air defense in order to repel airstrikes.

Syria has been bombed by the Zionist regime forces many times in recent years. The latest attack by the Israeli regime happened several days ago that killed two Iranian military advisors.

US says has killed Daesh Europe attack planner

Daesh

CENTCOM in a statement early on Tuesday, identified the man as Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri.

It said al-Jabouri “was responsible for planning ISIS attacks into Europe and developed the leadership structure” for the armed group.

His death will “temporarily disrupt the organisation’s ability to plot external attacks,” it added.

The raid that killed al-Jabouri happened on Monday. CENTCOM has claimed that no civilians were killed or injured in the raid.

It gave no further details.

Iranians bid farewell to 2 military advisors killed by Israel in Syria

Iranian Military Advisors in Syria

The funeral ceremony for Milad Heidari and Meghdad Mahghani, which was held near Tehran’s Imam Hussein Square, was also joined by top Iranian government and military officials, including Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Hossein Salami.

Both martyrs, who served IRGC’s elite Quds Force, lost their lives in an Israeli airstrike that targeted Damascus and its suburbs on Friday morning.

The IRGC and the Iranian government have pledged a crushing response to the new Israeli crime.

Iranian military advisors have been in Syria since 2014 at the request of the Damascus government on a mission against foreign-sponsored terror groups wreaking havoc on the Arab country.

They have effectively helped the Syrian government cleanse most of the territory from terror groups, many of which are backed by Israel and its allies.

US official says Biden admin. disagreed with OPEC cut plans

White House

Oil prices jumped on Monday after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies including Russia announced on Sunday further production target cuts of about 1.16 million barrels per day (bpd) from May through the rest of the year.

“We don’t think that production cuts are advisable at this moment, given market uncertainty. And we made that clear,” Kirby stated.

US officials were notified about OPEC’s plans to cut oil production before a Sunday announcement that surprised markets but they do not know why the decision was made, a White House official said.

“We were given a heads up,” Kirby continued.

Asked about reports that the cuts were related to the timing of the US’ replenishment of its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Kirby said, “I would just say that I can’t even begin to speculate why this decision was made.”

Kirby sought to downplay any tensions between the US and Saudi Arabia, which pushed for production cuts last autumn that angered the White House and prompted the administration to call for a review of its relationship.

One big difference now is that global oil prices are around $80 per barrel, compared with $110 and $120 last year, he added, while adding that the White House is focused on consumers, not barrels. The administration will continue to work with producers to ensure growth and lower prices for consumers.

“We’re not always going to agree…with everything that Saudi Arabia does or says any more than they’re always going to agree with everything that we do or say, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is a strategic partnership,” Kirby stated.

Iran envoy sends letter to UN chief, says Tehran’s presence in Syria fully legal

Supporters of Syria, Iran and Russia

The Iranian diplomat issued the warning on Monday in a letter sent to the UN secretary general and the chief of the Security Council, stressing that Iran’s presence in Syria is fully legal.

Here is the full text of Iravani’s letter:

Excellency,

On instructions from my Government, we would like to respond to unsubstantiated allegations made against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the letter dated 27 March 2023 from the Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2023/227), in which the United States tried, in yet another cynical attempt, to legitimize its ongoing violation of international law in Syria by accusing Iran of supporting the so-called non-State militia groups.

The allegations imputed to Iran in the letter are completely unfounded and categorically rejected. As stated in our prior letters, including the letter dated 7 September 2022 (S/2022/680), the Islamic Republic of Iran has never been involved, directly or indirectly, in any attacks against the United States military forces in Syria and Iraq.

The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the unlawful military strikes by the United States forces against civilian infrastructure in Syria on 23 March 2023, which resulted in the tragic loss of innocent civilian lives and severe damage to Syria’s infrastructure. The United States must bear its responsibility for committing such a heinous crime that has violated Syrian national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the UN Charter as well as the basic rules of international humanitarian law.

The Syrian Arab Republic has explicitly and repeatedly stated that the presence of U.S. forces in Syrian territory is illegal and constitutes a violation of Syrian national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Syrian Arab Republic has consistently called upon the United States to put an end to its occupation and unlawful presence in Syria, and therefore, the United States’ invocation of and reliance on the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter to justify its armed attacks against civilian infrastructure in Syria is nothing more than an arbitrary and erroneous interpretation of Article 51 of the United Nations Charter that is untenable, invalid, and devoid of any legal support.

The United States must acknowledge that the continued plunder of Syrian resources, the ongoing occupation of Syrian territory, and its support for separatists are the main causes of the confrontation of the Syrian people against the United States military forces. The United States cannot place the responsibility for its blunders and crimes on others.

The United States must stop its unlawful actions, end its illegal occupation, and adhere to its international legal obligations, including the pertinent resolutions of the Security Council, which required all Member States to uphold and respect Syria’s national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. This is in the interest of regional and international peace and security.

The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates, once again, its strong commitment to Syria’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence. Iran’s presence in Syria is fully legal and is based on a formal request and consent from the Syrian government to provide assistance and support in the fight against terrorism.

The Islamic Republic of Iran reserves its inherent right to self-defense under international law and will take decisive measures to protect its forces, interests, and facilities from any threat or unlawful act perpetrated by the United States or others.

I should be grateful if you would circulate the present letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
