Tens of thousands rally in Tel Aviv against PM’s proposed reforms ahead of parliament session

Israel Protest

Tens of thousands of Israelis have gathered in central Tel Aviv for the latest weekly protest against the government’s judicial reform plans just days before legislators return for a new parliament session.

Opponents of the judicial reform bill have kept up demonstrations in the commercial hub and across the country since January, despite Netanyahu putting the controversial reform programme on ice a month ago.

“History has its eyes on you,” read a placard held aloft on Saturday at the rally in Tel Aviv, where demonstrators lit flares and waved national flags in the latest show of political discontent.

Israeli society has been deeply split over the proposed legislation, which seeks to weaken the Supreme Court and hand politicians greater influence over the selection of judges.

Netanyahu’s right-wing administration has argued the proposals are necessary to rebalance power between the judiciary and elected officials, while opponents said the changes represent a threat to democracy.

The weekly rallies have repeatedly drawn tens of thousands onto the streets of Tel Aviv.

The protesters gathered against the backdrop of cross-party talks hosted by President Isaac Herzog this month, which have sought to reach a compromise on the reform package.

The negotiations were launched after Netanyahu announced a halt to the legislative process on March 27 “out of a desire to prevent a rift in the nation”, in the face of mass protests and a general strike.

However, the opposition has remained sceptical of the prime minister’s intentions and no compromise has been reached.

With parliament due to hold an opening session on Monday after a recess, both backers of the reform and its detractors have sought to keep up the pressure on politicians.

The architect of the reform, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, addressed thousands of supporters who rallied in Jerusalem on Thursday.

The pro-reform protest was also attended by far-right Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich, who promised that the government will not “give up” on the package.

The cabinet ministers are part of a coalition of right-wing, extreme-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties which took office in late December.

Parliament speaker says Iran expects Iraqi initiatives on repaying its debts

Qalibaf and Rashid

During his meeting with the visiting Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid on Saturday, Qalibaf referred to Iraq’s debts to Iran over its electricity and natural gas imports, saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran “clearly asks the Iraqi government and parliament to take better initiatives regarding US cruel sanctions and repaying debts to Iran.”

The US is the prime enemy of both Iran and Iraq, which is opposed to the deepening of relations between the two neighbors, the top Iranian lawmaker said, adding that the US spares no effort to reach its goal.

Qalibaf thanked the Iraqi parliament for approving a 2020 law that obliged American forces to withdraw from the country following Washington’s assassination of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi Commander Abu Mehdi Al-Muhandis.

He also thanked the Iraqi government for its efforts to pave the way for talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia that led to the resumption of ties between Tehran and Riyadh.

The Iraqi president for his part hailed the Iran-Saudi deal as an important step in enhancing stability and security in the region.

The two sides also discussed other issues including security in both countries as well as the high level of bilateral relations.

President Rashid expressed gratitude toward Iran for its support to the Iraqi nation at various times over the past decades.

Iranian herbal dish Zeytoon Parvardeh goes global

According to Tasteatlas, the ranking of the foods on its list is based on the ratings the users give.

The site recognizes real users with a series of mechanisms and ignores the ratings of bots or local people.

Meanwhile, it gives more value to the ratings of users that the system knows. Apparently, for the list of “the World’s 100 Top Vegetarian Foods” until April 24, 2023, 9,740 ratings were recorded, of which 6,107 were recognized as genuine and legal by the system.

Tasteatlas says its goal is to promote top local foods, make traditional foods more popular, and arouse the curiosity of people about foods that they have not yet tried.

The site’s recipe of Zeytoon Parvardeh says: “This simple dish, which comes from Gilan Province, consists of a delicious mix of pitted olives and pomegranate paste.

Additional ingredients include ground walnuts, garlic, and fresh herbs such as cilantro or mint as well as pomegranate seeds and plenty of olive oil.

Zeytoon Parvardeh is usually served cold and is traditionally consumed as an appetizer or snack along with lavash bread.”

Ayatollah Khamenei to Iraqi president: Iraq’s progress and prosperity important for Iran

Ayatollah Khamenei, Iranian and Iraqi Presidents Raisi and Rashid

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the expansion of bilateral cooperation and the implementation of the agreements concluded by Tehran and Baghdad will be beneficial to both sides.

The leader stressed that Iran will stand by Iraq and hopes that the country will progress.

He noted that the expansion of the Iran-Iraq relations has strong enemies, and if there were no strong historical and religious bonds between the two countries, the state of their relations could have become like what it was during the era of the former dictator,  Saddam.

Ayatollah Khamenei further hailed the Iraqi people for their hospitality toward Iranian pilgrims during the Arbaeen ceremonies, saying the meaning of such a phenomenon is so significant.

The leader added that bonds between the Iraqi and Iranian nations are so strong that their unity cannot be affected by political factors.

He underlined that this opportunity must be used to further deepen bilateral ties. While expressing pleasure with the state of the Iraqi government, Ayatollah Khamenei said this is the result of the unity among the Iraqi people and groups.

The leader also spoke about the US presence in Iraq. He said the US is not Iraq’s friends, adding that the Americans are actually nobody’s friends nor they are loyal to their European friends.

He underscored that the presence of even a single American in Iraq is too much.
Iraqi President Abdullatif Rashid for his part said that Iraq’s ties with Iran are consistent and strong in all areas.

He also said Baghdad will do its utmost to implement all agreements with Tehran. Rashid further thanked the Islamic Republic for its assistance during different periods, particularly in the fight against terrorism.

Iran, Iraq resolved to further expand bilateral cooperation

Iran and Iraq Presidents Raisi and Rashid

President Raisi said after meeting with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid behind closed doors in Tehran on Saturday that Tehran’s relations with Baghdad were “strategic.”
The session was joined by high-ranking delegations of the two states.

He referred to a security agreement signed between the two countries last year and said, “The smallest insecurity in Iraq would be deemed insecurity in Iran. Iraq’s security matters to Iran,” he said.

He also said the volume of trade between Iran and Iraq was 10 billion dollars, which he said had to further increase.

Raisi said the presence of American forces in the region was harmful to regional security.

“Iran’s relations with Iraq and [other] regional countries are based on a view toward shared interests, whereas America has its own interests in mind,” Raisi said.

He also voiced hope that Rashid’s visit to Iran would be “a turning point” in the enhancement of relations between the two countries.

For his part, the Iraqi president said his visit to Tehran was meant to further promote already-flourishing ties between the two neighbors.

Iran-Iraq relations, he added, are not limited to the ties between government institutions, but they cover all fields since the two nations have a common history, stressing that ties between the two countries remain “unchangeable.”

The Iraqi leader called for efforts to remove the existing obstacles in the way of cooperation with Iran.

He praised the Islamic Republic’s support for Iraq in its campaign against the Daesh Takfiri terror group, which effectively helped Baghdad drive the terrorists out of its territory.

The president also hailed a reconciliation deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia, saying the agreement will contribute to regional security.

Israel hits Syria’s Homs, three wounded

Israel Syria Attack

Syria’s state news agency SANA, citing military officials, said three civilians were wounded in the attack in the early hours of Saturday and that a civilian fuel station caught fire. A number of fuel tankers and trucks were also burned.

“At around 00:50 [21:50 GMT]…the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack with a number of missiles, from the direction of north Lebanon, targeting several positions in the vicinity of the city of Homs,” SANA reported.

SANA added Syrian air defences shot down some of the Israeli missiles in the sky over Homs.

The pro-government Sham FM radio said fires broke out south of Homs city as a result of the strikes and “successive explosions” sounded from the area.

The United Kingdom-based opposition war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Israeli missiles destroyed an ammunition depot belonging to the Lebanese group Hezbollah at a military airport in the Homs countryside.

The observatory added it was the second time Israel targeted the site in a month.

The Israeli regime frequently violates Syria’s sovereignty by targeting military positions inside the Arab country, especially those of the resistance movement Hezbollah, which has played a vital role in helping the Syrian army fight foreign-backed terrorists.

The Tel Aviv regime has been a main supporter of terrorist groups that have battled the government of President Bashar al-Assad since foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria in early 2011.

Syria has repeatedly complained to the UN over Israeli assaults, urging the Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. The calls have, however, fallen on deaf ears.

Sources say US confiscated Iran oil cargo

Iran Oil Tanker

Maritime security company Ambrey announced that the US confiscation took place at least five days before Iran’s action on Thursday.

“Ambrey has assessed the seizure by the Iranian Navy to be in response to the US action,” it said in an advisory to clients.

“Both tankers were Suezmax-sized. Iran has previously responded tit-for-tat following seizures of Iranian oil cargo,” it added.

The sources familiar with the matter, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue, stated that Washington took control of the oil cargo aboard the Marshall Islands tanker Suez Rajan after securing an earlier court order. The tanker’s last reported position was near southern Africa on April 22, ship tracking data showed.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy announced on Thursday it has seized a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the Sea of Oman and directed it toward the country’s territorial waters after the ship hit an Iranian vessel and tried to flee in violation of maritime regulations.

According to the public relations department of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, the foreign vessel collided with an Iranian fishing craft in the Persian Gulf late on Wednesday.

A number of crew members of the Iranian ship sustained injuries as a result of the impact, and two are still missing.

The Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker then attempted to flee the scene in serious breach of international laws and regulations, which require provision of medical treatment and the supply of proper and sufficient medicine to seamen in case of sickness or injury.

Recovering from the shock, the fishermen managed to issue a distress call.

The Iranian naval forces, deployed to Chabahar Port in southern Iran on a Center for International Maritime Security (CIMSEC) mission, shortly after intercepted and seized the foreign ship in the Sea of Oman after having been contacted by the Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Center (MRCC).

The vessel was seized by Bayandor corvette of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy in compliance with a confiscation order issued by Iranian judicial authorities.

Russian FM: US-led attempts to isolate Moscow failed

Russian FM Sergei Lavrov

Addressing the online Global Conference on Multipolarity on Saturday, Russia’s top diplomat stated, “It seems only natural that efforts by Washington and its satellites to reverse the course of history and force the international community to live up to a ‘rules-based world order’ have failed. I will only mention the completely failed course toward isolating Russia that the Westerners have been pursuing.”

“The majority of countries inhabited by some 85% of the world’s population are reluctant to pull the chestnuts out of the fire for former colonial powers,” he added.

Ahead of the conference, the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the event would once again make it possible to heed politicians, public dignitaries, journalists, and academic and cultural figures from around the world, who stand up for multipolarity, and for fairer and more democratic inter-state relations.

UN says Taliban not invited to Doha meeting

Taliban fighter in Afghanistan

“The Secretary-General has not extended an invitation to the de facto authorities,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Friday.

Last week the United Nations had to stress that the meeting will not focus on the possible international recognition of the Taliban administration after comments by the deputy UN chief sparked concern and confusion.

The gathering in Qatar on Monday and Tuesday is instead intended to focus on reinvigorating “the international engagement around common objectives for a durable way forward on … Afghanistan,” Dujarric added.

Guterres’ deputy, Amina Mohammed, had suggested last week that the meeting in Doha “could find those baby steps to put us back on the pathway to recognition.”

The Taliban seized power in August 2021 as US-led forces withdrew following 20 years of war.

In December, the 193-member UN General Assembly approved postponing, for the second time, a decision on whether to recognize the Afghan Taliban administration by allowing them to send a United Nations ambassador to New York.

The UN Security Council unanimously condemned on Thursday a Taliban administration ban on Afghan women working for the United Nations in Afghanistan and called on Taliban leaders to “swiftly reverse” a crackdown on the rights of women and girls.

The Taliban says it respects women’s rights. Taliban officials added that decisions on female aid workers are an “internal issue.”
