Ukraine conducted drone attacks against six regions: Russia

Russia Ukraine War

In what could be the biggest drone attack on Russian territory since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, Russia’s defence ministry said on Wednesday morning that drones were also shot down over the regions of Orlov, Bryansk, Ryazan, Kaluga and the Moscow region surrounding the Russian capital.

Russian also launched a missile and drone attack against Kyiv on Wednesday morning that was described as the “most powerful strike” on the Ukrainian capital in months, leaving two people dead and one wounded, the city’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukrainian air defences destroyed more than 20 missiles and drones involved in the attack and two security guards were killed by falling debris, according to authorities.

“Kyiv had not experienced such a powerful attack since spring… In total, more than 20 enemy targets were destroyed by air defence forces,” the Kyiv City Military Administration wrote on Telegram.

Russian state news agency TASS, quoting emergency services, said earlier on Wednesday that four Il-76 heavy transport aircraft, which have long been the workhorse of the Russian military, were damaged at an airfield in Russia’s western Pskov region, located roughly 660km (some 411 miles) north of Ukrainian border.

“The defence ministry is repelling a drone attack in Pskov’s airport,” the regional Governor Mikhail Vedernikov said on the Telegram messaging app, posting a video of a large fire, with sounds of blasts and sirens in the background.

Vedernikov, who was at the scene of the attack, stated that “according to preliminary information, there are no victims”.

The scale of the damage to the airport was being assessed, he added.

Video footage posted on social media, reportedly from the airport, showed thick black smoke rising over the airport with residents reporting hearing loud explosions and gunfire.

Reports on Telegram channels said anti-aircraft systems were in action around the Russian city, which is located close to European Union member countries Latvia and Estonia.

Moscow’s Vnukovo airport was also closed briefly early on Wednesday, TASS reported, citing Russian aviation officials. The airport in Moscow was ordered closed amid reports that Russia’s military was repelling a drone attack on Pskov airport, the news agency reported.

Meduza, one of Russia’s most widely-read independent news sites, said sources reported that between 10 and 20 drones attacked Pskov airfield and that Russian troops stationed on the ground tried to repel the drone raid using small-arms fire. One of the drones reportedly hit a refuelling complex, according to the news site, causing a large fire.

Russia’s 334th Transport Aviation Regiment, which operates Il-76 transport planes, is based at the Pskov airport, according to Meduza.

All flights from the airport are cancelled, the Pskov Governor Vedernikov wrote on Telegram, “until the nature of the possible damage to the runway is clarified”.

The extent of any damage or causalities from the other Russian regions where drones were reportedly shot down was not immediately known.

The Pskov region came under attack in late May when two armed drones caused an explosion that left an oil pipeline’s administrative building damaged, the regional governor said at the time.

Russia’s capital Moscow and regional areas in the country have come under near-daily raids by Ukrainian drones in recent weeks amid a warning by Kyiv that the war on Ukraine would “return” to Russia.

Iran’s ‘Tactical Sayyad’ air defense system can engage 12 targets simultaneously: Military official

Iran Air Defense System

Speaking to Tasnim, Afshin Naderi Sharif said Tactical Sayyad is a homegrown air defense system suitable for medium altitudes.

He noted that an advantage of the new missile system over the Khordad-3 and Khordad-15 air defense systems is its self-protection system.

The Tactical Sayyad has a short-range self-protection system in one of its silos that makes the weapon immune to low-altitude threats, he added.

The official stated that the new air defense system has become more agile since its radars and missile launchers have been merged into a single vehicle.

Naderi Sharif explained that Tactical Sayyad can detect and track 24 targets at a distance of 180 kilometers and simultaneously engage 6 to 12 targets in a range of 120 kilometers.

Earlier in August, Iran for the first time showcased a replica of the Tactical Sayyad air defense system at the International Military Forum ARMY-2023 in Russia.

Unveiling the Iranian missile system in an exhibition abroad signified that it has successfully passed all tests and has become operational in Iran.

Netanyahu thanks Saudi Arabia after emergency plane landing

Jeddah Airport

On Tuesday, after the flight had landed in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has made an agreement with Saudi Arabia a major goal, seized on the incident to highlight the potential for improved ties.

“I greatly appreciate the warm attitude of the Saudi authorities to the Israeli passengers whose flight was in distress,” he said in a video recorded in Hebrew with Arabic subtitles, as he gestured towards a map of the region behind him.

“I greatly appreciate the good neighbourliness.”

The Air Seychelles flight carrying 128 passengers was forced to land on Monday because of an electrical malfunction.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the passengers spent the night at an airport hotel in Jeddah and were flown back by the airline on an alternate plane.

Tracking data from FlightRadar24.com showed the Air Seychelles Airbus A320, flight HM22, diverted to Jeddah on Monday night while it was over the Red Sea. The airline did not respond to a request for comment.

Another Air Seychelles A320 flew to Jeddah on Tuesday from Dubai to pick up the travellers and carry them on to Tel Aviv. In July 2022, Saudi Arabia lifted its ban on Israeli overflights during a visit by US President Joe Biden to the kingdom.

The passengers streamed out of Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport later Tuesday, some seemingly surprised by the swarm of reporters, photographers and party balloons that greeted them.

In interviews with Israeli media, the passengers said their experience in Jeddah was pleasant, with some Saudis even greeting them in Hebrew.

“The reception we got from the Saudis was very surprising,” Emmanuelle Arbel, one of the passengers, told Radio 103FM, according to the Times of Israel.

“They said to us ‘You are most welcome’ and were smiling. In truth, we were not expecting this,” Arbel added.
There was no immediate reaction from Saudi Arabia.

Though Saudi Arabia was not one of the Persian Gulf and Arab countries to normalise ties with Israel as part of the 2020 US-brokered Abraham Accords, speculation has grown about an impending deal.

Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have official ties, although they have developed strong but informal connections in recent years over their shared concerns about Iran’s growing influence in the region.

A normalisation deal with Saudi Arabia, the most powerful and wealthy Arab state, has the potential to reshape the region and boost Israel’s standing in historic ways.

But brokering such a deal is a heavy lift as the kingdom has said it will not officially recognise Israel before a resolution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel’s current far-right government, led by Netanyahu, has been blamed for escalating violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, where near-daily raids have killed and injured hundreds.

Israel has also made clear that it will continue to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem, despite international criticism and accusations of apartheid by human rights organisation.

For their part, the Saudis are also apparently seeking defence guarantees and access to US nuclear technology.

Israeli press commentators suggested efforts for normalisation with Saudi Arabia have been severely compromised on the back of Israel’s announcement of a meeting between its foreign minister and his Libyan counterpart in Rome.

The announcement sparked protests in Libya, which does not recognise Israel, and led to the dismissal of Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush.

But Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Monday denied having been the source of the “leak” about the meeting between the two ministers, without providing further explanation.

According to journalist Barak Ravid, the incident could contribute to dissuading Arab countries from engaging in any further steps to normalise with Israel, he wrote for the Israeli website Walla.

Over 5k Palestinians arrested by Israel in West Bank in 2023: Report

Israel Palestine

The Palestinian Prisoners Club (PPC) made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, saying the occupation forces arrested 200 citizens across the West Bank within a week, which brought to 5,100 the total number of Palestinians arrested since the start of 2023.

The statement added the arrests were made in the cities of al-Khalil, Nablus, Ramallah, and Jenin.

Palestinian Shehab news agency reported the detainees were kept in 23 Israeli jails and detention and investigation centers. Among the 5,100 Palestinians are 1,200 administrative detainees, 32 female prisoners and 180 minor children, in addition to 700 sick prisoners.

“The arrests were accompanied by violations and attacks against the prisoners and their families, in addition to the large material losses inside their homes, as a result of vandalism,” the statement added.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club said the arrests left “dangerous” impacts on the detainees and their families, adding that some families had more than one member in jail.

The statement added the Israeli regime had raised the number of “administrative” detentions, stressing that it has recently started targeting a new generation of Palestinians, including children.

Under its policy of administrative detention, the occupying regime detains Palestinians without trial or charge for up to six months; a period which can be extended for an indefinite number of times.

The detention takes place on the orders of a military commander and on the basis of what the regime describes as “secret” evidence. Some prisoners have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years.

The Israeli oppression of Palestinians has witnessed a sharp rise under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s extremist coalition cabinet, which is composed of far-right Zionist parties that oppose Palestinian statehood and support the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied lands.

Over the past months, the usurping regime has intensified attacks against Palestinian towns. As a result of these attacks, dozens of Palestinians have lost their lives and many others have been arrested.

According to the United Nations, 2023 is already the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since it began recording fatalities in 2005. The previous year, 2022, had been the most lethal year with 150 Palestinians killed, of whom 33 were minors, as reported by the United Nations.

Hungary says the only way to end war is if Trump is re-elected

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the only way to end the war in Ukraine was if former US President Donald Trump was re-elected.

In an interview with Fox News, Orban praised Trump’s foreign policy while blasting the Biden administration for its approach to the war.

He stated that Trump’s return to office would be “the only way out” of the conflict and that any suggestion that Kyiv could win against Russia was “a lie.”

“The Russians are far stronger, far more numerous than the Ukrainians,” Orban continued, adding, “Call back Trump. … Trump is the man who can save the Western world.”

Lithuania summons Vatican diplomat over Pope Francis comments

Lithuania has summoned the Vatican’s top diplomat after Pope Francis told Russian youths to remember they are the heirs of “the great Russian empire”.

In response to remarks Francis made on Friday, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited the apostolic nuncio for “a talk” after the archbishop returns from holidays.

On Tuesday, the Vatican said Pope Francis did not intend to glorify Russian imperialism in the speech, where he also praised emperors Peter the Great and Catherine II who expanded the empire.

Francis’s intent was “to preserve and promote all that is positive in the great Russian cultural and spiritual heritage”, added the Vatican.

Ukraine, once part of the same empire, stated the comments were “deeply regrettable”, while the Kremlin described them as “very gratifying”.

No plan of international investigation into Wagner crash: Kremlin

The Kremlin says there is no question of an international investigation into the plane crash that killed Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and that the Russian probe included the possibility that it was deliberate.

“It is obvious that different versions are being considered, including the version – you know what we are talking about – let’s say, a deliberate atrocity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Peskov added that the probe into the plane crash was a Russian investigation and that there could be no question of an international investigation.

Last week, a private jet on which Prigozhin was travelling to St Petersburg from Moscow crashed north of Moscow, killing all 10 people on board, including top Wagner commanders, his bodyguards and a crew of three.

More than 20 thousand troops trained in Britain: Ukraine

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry announced more than 20 thousand troops have been trained in Britain.

In a post on Facebook, the ministry said, “Each of them received all the necessary and useful ammunition and physical support. Ukrainian soldiers are given everything they need during training and at the front.”

“Great Britain provides effective and significant support to Ukraine in its struggle against the unprovoked invasion of the Russian forces. And so far, support has already exceeded £2.3 billion ($2.9 bn),” it added.

Ukrainian drones ‘will not go unpunished’: Russia

Russia’s foreign ministry announced a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory overnight “will not go unpunished”.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the drones, some of which struck an airbase in Pskov, 600km (400 miles) from Ukraine, could not have covered such distances without information from Western countries.

Ukrainian drones swept across Russia in overnight attacks that destroyed military aircraft and disrupted air traffic, Russian officials said.

Moscow announced the drones targeted six Russian regions, including an attack on an airport in the western city of Pskov – located near the borders of Latvia and Estonia – where military transport aircraft were reported damaged amid explosions and a huge fire.

The Kremlin has also announced that Russia is working out where Ukrainian drone attacks are launched from in order to prevent further such strikes, after a wave of overnight attacks saw six separate Russian regions struck.

In a call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin receives constant updates about such strikes.

‘Deliberate attack on the civilian population’: Ukraine

Ukrainian presidential advisor, Mikhail Podolyak, said the attack on Kyiv is a “deliberate attack on the civilian population”.

On X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter, he wrote: “Today’s large-scale combined attack of the RF [Russian Federation] (cruise missiles+Shaheds) on Kyiv is an unquestionably deliberate attack on the civilian population.

“The motive: revenge for the growing accidents in the RF itself; failures on the frontline; ethnic hatred and attempt of psychological intimidation. Undoubtedly, an attack of this kind is qualified as an act of demonstrative terrorism, thought out, premeditated and committed by a group of persons in prior conspiracy,” he added.

Ukraine’s top general says Russia launched more than 40 aerial attacks overnight

Russia fired 28 cruise missiles at Ukraine overnight, all of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, Kyiv’s top general stated Wednesday.

Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, said Ukraine additionally destroyed 15 of 16 drones launched by Russia.

“Overnight, the enemy attacked the territory of Ukraine with cruise missiles and attack UAVs. A total of 44 enemy air targets were recorded,” he added.

Earlier, Ukrainian officials said Russia had conducted a “massive” drone and missile attack on Kyiv that killed at least two people.

Russia launched a “massive” attack on Kyiv overnight: Ukrainian official

Russia conducted a “massive” attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on Tuesday night using drones and missiles, said Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, on Wednesday.

“Kyiv has not experienced such a powerful attack since spring,” Popko wrote on Telegram.

Popko stated several groups of drones traveled towards Kyiv “from different directions,” and later missiles were launched toward the city from Tu-95MS strategic bombers.

Air defense forces destroyed more than 20 “enemy targets,” he added.

Two men ages 26 and 36 were killed, while three others sustained injuries of varying severity from falling debris, according to the Kyiv city military administration. Two of those injured were hospitalized.

Earlier Wednesday, Kyiv mayor’s said fire and rescue services were working at wreckage sites in the Darnitsky and Shevchenkivskiy districts.

Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilnehas also reported explosions in the southern city of Odesa early Wednesday after the head of its regional military administration, Oleh Kiper, warned of Russian rocket attacks and asked residents to stay in shelter.

Russian missile strikes kill at least 2 in Kyiv

At least two people were killed and two others injured following Russian missile attacks on Kyiv early Wednesday, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said.

“Fire and rescue services continue to work at the wreckage sites. In particular, in the Darnitsky district and in four areas in the Shevchenkivskiy district of the capital,” Klitschko stated.

Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported explosions in the southern city of Odesa early Wednesday after the head of its regional military administration, Oleh Kiper, warned of Russian rocket attacks.

“Russian terrorists attack Odesa region with rockets,” he stressed, asking residents to stay in shelter.

Ukrainian military boats destroyed and several drones intercepted: Russian defense ministry

The Russian defense ministry claimed that four Ukrainian military high-speed boats were destroyed in the Black Sea with personnel on board.

It also announced several drones were intercepted over various Russian regions in the early hours of Wednesday.

“On August 30, at about 00.00 Moscow time, a naval aviation aircraft of the Black Sea Fleet in the Black Sea destroyed four high-speed military boats with landing groups of Ukrainian special operations forces with a total number of up to 50 people,” the Russian defense ministry claimed in a Telegram post.

The defense ministry also added three Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Bryansk region, one over Oryol region and one over Kaluga region in the early hours of Wednesday.

Sevastopol Gov. Mikhail Razvozhaev reported Russian air defense forces repelling Ukrainian drone attacks in the area of Sevastopol Bay in occupied Crimea in the early hours of Wednesday.

The United States is providing an additional $250 million security assistance package to Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Tuesday.

Blinken said the assistance package includes air defense missiles, artillery ammunition, Javelin systems and rockets, and mine-clearing equipment

The US will also be supplying ambulances “spare parts, services, training, and transportation,” Blinken stated.

“This package of weapons and equipment, which are valued at $250 million, is being executed under drawdowns previously directed for Ukraine,” he added.

“Russia started this war and could end it at any time by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine and stopping its brutal attacks,” Blinken said, adding, “Until it does, the United States and our allies and partners will stand united with Ukraine, for as long as it takes.”

Ukrainian FM: Prigozhin’s fate shows possible peace negotiations with Russia would be futile

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated Tuesday the fate of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin proves the futility of possible peace negotiations with Russia.

“Prigozhin was in conflict with Putin,” Kuleba said during a press conference in Paris alongside his French counterpart Catherine Colonna.

“They agreed on security guarantees, and then Putin killed him. There’s no reason to believe that in other negotiations Putin would behave differently,” he added.

The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the plane crash that killed Prigozhin and other Wagner deputies.

While in Paris, Kuleba also met with a number of leading French military-industrial complex companies and discussed “specific Ukrainian-French cooperation and coproduction projects,” he said in a post on social media.

Ukraine blasts Pope Francis’ address to Russian youth as “imperialist propaganda”

Ukrainian officials have criticized Pope Francis’ address to Russian youth, calling it “imperialist propaganda.”

The pontiff made a video address to the 10th All-Russian Catholic Youth Assembly in St. Petersburg on Friday during which he urged them to view themselves as descendants of the Russian empire.

“Never forget your heritage. You are the descendants of great Russia: the great Russia of saints, rulers, the great Russia of Peter I, Catherine II, that empire — educated, great culture and great humanity. Never give up on this heritage,” the pope said.

“You are descendants of the great Mother Russia, step forward with it. And thank you — thank you for your way of being, for your way of being Russian.”

Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesperson Oleh Nikolenko called the pope’s speech “imperialist propaganda.”

“This is the kind of imperialist propaganda, ‘spiritual bonds’ and the ‘need’ to save ‘Great Mother Russia’ which the Kremlin uses to justify the murder of thousands of Ukrainians and the destruction of hundreds of Ukrainian towns and villages,” Nikolenko said in a Facebook post.

The pope’s mission should be “precisely to open the eyes of Russian youth to the devastating course of the current Russian leadership” and instead he is promoting “Russian great-power ideas, that are, in fact, the reason for Russia’s chronic aggression,” Nikolenko added.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared himself to Peter the Great during an exhibition dedicated to the first Russian emperor, using the comparison to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, said in a statement that Peter the Great and Catherine the Great are the “worst examples of imperialism and extreme Russian nationalism,” warning that the pope’s words “could be perceived as support for the nationalism and imperialism that has caused the war in Ukraine today.”

“As a Church, we want to state that in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, such statements inspire the neocolonial ambitions of the aggressor country,” Shevchuk added.

The Vatican rejected the interpretation of the pope’s words as praise of imperialism.

“The Pope intended to encourage young people to preserve and promote all that is positive in the great cultural and Russian spirituality, and certainly not to exalt imperialist logic and government personalities, cited to indicate some historical periods of reference,” the Vatican statement announced.

Massive embezzlement scheme uncovered in Tehran state bank, preventing huge losses

Iran Central Bank

The accused mastermind behind this audacious scheme had devised an elaborate plan to siphon off funds from the bank’s resources and convert them into 60 million foreign digital currencies of the Tether type, depositing them into his virtual wallet.

The alarm was raised when the “Saima” system detected a significant discrepancy of 29 thousand billion rials in the bank account.
Swift action was taken as the matter was immediately reported to bank security, preventing any further damage.

Checks that were intended to be deposited into the cryptocurrency seller’s account were halted, leading to the subsequent arrest of the individuals involved.

This timely intervention by authorities saved the bank from substantial financial losses.

The Prosecutor’s Office is now working diligently to uncover all details surrounding this embezzlement case and bring those responsible to justice.

Report: Iran warns against Iraq failure to expel anti-Tehran armed groups

Brigadier General Esmaeil Ghaani

The agreement, which was the main focus of recent negotiations between Ismail Qaani, commander of Iran’s Quds Force, and Iraqi authorities, aimed to halt missile bombardments on Kurdish opposition positions in northern Iraq.

According to the London-based media outlet, during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al-Sudani and heads of Shiite political forces, Qaani stressed the importance of fully implementing the security agreement.

He made it clear that if Iraq fails to do so, Iran will take necessary measures to protect its national security.

In response, the Iraqi government has taken serious action by deploying additional forces to the border area in order to prevent any armed activities by Kurdish militias against Iran.

The security agreement emphasizes the prevention of illegal movement of armed individuals and the dismantling of training camps belonging to Kurdish militias in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The fate of approximately 20,000 members of these groups and their families remains uncertain.

Various proposals have been put forward, all suggesting moving them away from Iran’s border and intensifying monitoring of their activities.

According to the news channel, while full implementation of the agreement may prove challenging, both Baghdad and Erbil are determined to resolve this issue.

Ex-Iranian Pres. Rouhani warns over limits on public participation in votes

Hassan Rouhani

He criticized the new law that restricts the space for public engagement in the electoral process, stating that decision-making for 85 million Iranians has been entrusted to only a small number of people whose public votes are limited to a few hundred thousand ones.

Rouhani also highlighted the detrimental impact of depriving universities of prominent professors, describing it as cruelty to both science and the country.

He was referring to the dismissal of a number of university professors and academics in the country.

He emphasized that the disappointment of academics is not in the best interest of Iran’s system and urged for actions to address this issue.

Furthermore, Rouhani expressed his frustration over the delay in revitalizing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal.

He stated that due to this delay, Iran has missed out on approximately $100 billion in oil revenue.

The former Iranian president questioned whether it would be possible to postpone the upcoming election by a few months, suggesting that more time could allow for necessary reforms and improvements to ensure a fair and inclusive electoral process.

Pakistan high court suspends ex-premier Imran Khan conviction

Pakistan PM Imran Khan

The 70-year-old former cricketer has been at the centre of political turmoil in the crisis-ridden state since his ouster in a parliamentary vote of confidence in April 2022, and his relations with Pakistan’s powerful generals have deteriorated over the past year.

Khan was imprisoned on 5 August after being sentenced to three years for unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018-22. As a result of the conviction, and with a national election expected in the coming months, Pakistan’s election commission barred him from contesting elections for five years.

“The sentence has been suspended,” Naeem Panjutha, his lawyer, said on X, formerly known as Twitter, adding: “God be praised.”

Khan’s legal team lodged the appeal on the grounds that he was convicted without being given the right to defend himself.

The court had ordered Khan’s release on bail, another of his lawyers, Shoaib Shaheen, told reporters outside the court. But it remains uncertain whether he will be freed as there are court orders for his arrest in other cases.

Khan faces dozens of cases, including charges of abetment to murder, leaking state secrets and orchestrating violent protests. He has already been arrested in connection with another case, on charges of leaking state secrets and compromising national security.

It is unclear how the ban on contesting elections will be affected with the suspension of his sentence. National elections are due this year but likely to be delayed several months.

The suspension marks another win for Khan and comes a day after the Balochistan high court dismissed sedition charges against him, saying they had been filed improperly.
