Iranian FM calls for OIC extraordinary meeting on Palestine, says ready to host meeting

Gaza Strip

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held talks on Monday evening with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha on the latest events in Palestine.

Amirabdollahian pointed to the crimes perpetrated by the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip and said Islamic countries should take measures to help the oppressed people of Palestine.

He also called for an extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the OIC member states.

Amirabdollahian said the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to host the meeting of Islamic countries on Palestine and called for a swift measure by all Muslim states to help the Palestinian people.

Meanwhile, the OIC secretary general slammed Israel’s attacks against the Palestinian people and said Islamic states should cooperate and make arrangements to adopt a joint response to the Zionist regime’s aggression.

Hissein Brahim Taha also pointed to the OIC Executive Committee’s plan for the Palestinian developments and received the Iranian foreign minister’s suggestion to hold an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers with open arms.

The latest escalation between Hamas and Israel began early on Saturday, when the Palestinian fighters launched a surprise attack on multiple locations along the Gaza border in response to Israel’s repeated aggression against Palestinians and desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli officials estimate that more than 900 people have been killed in the Hamas assault and over 2,700 have been wounded.

Israeli massive air strikes on the densely-populated Gaza Strip, has so far killed almost 800 people.

Iran Leader: Israel’s defeat ‘irreparable intelligence, military failure’

Ayatollah Khamenei

Addressing a graduation ceremony at Imam Ali military university earlier on Tuesday in Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei said the operation staged by Palestinian fighters on Saturday was a ‘devastating earthquake’ for the occupying regime’s intelligence and military.

“Everyone talked about the failure, but I emphasize on its irreparability,” the Leader noted and added, “This devastating earthquake has destroyed some of the main structures of the usurping regime’s governance, which cannot be easily rebuilt.”

Ayatollah Khamenei also hailed the Palestinian intelligence planners for the achievement in the Operation Al-Quds Flood, which has so far left over 1000 Israelis dead and thousands more injured.

The Leader said he is proud of Palestine and supports Palestinians, but denied Iran’s involvement in the latest developments.

He also stated that blaming others for the operation by the Palestinian resistance is a miscalculation.

The Leader added, “The occupying regime plays the victim and has used it as an excuse to continue its increased oppression; attack on Gaza, attack on people’s houses, attack on civilians, massacre and mass killing of people in Gaza. This playing innocent is a pretext to pile up the crime several-fold. It wants to justify these crimes by playing the innocent. This is also a miscalculation.”

Ayatollah Khamenei issued a warning to the heads and decision-makers of the Zionist regime and their supporters, saying: “They should know that the massacre and mass killing of the people in Gaza will wreak a greater disaster on them. They need to know that the reaction to the oppression is a heavier slap on their ugly faces.”

US says does not have “direct information” linking Iran to Hamas attacks on Israel

“What we can be quite clear about is that Iran is broadly complicit in these attacks for having supporting Hamas going back decades,” Finer said during an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” pointing to weapons, training and other financial support to Hamas.

“What we don’t have is direct information that shows Iranian involvement in ordering or planning of the attacks that took place over the last couple of days. It’s something that we’re going to keep looking at closely.”

In another appearance on “CBS Mornings,” Finer stated the US will be “laser-focused” on confirming the presence of any Americans among the hostages taken by Hamas, saying he expected the issue “to take on increasing over the course of the coming days.”

The US is prepared to offer “expertise on how to address these hostage situations,” he added.

Finer also predicted the Israeli response will “continue for quite some time,” vowing there would be “more US steps to show support and solidarity for Israel.”

A top expert at Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations has dismissed reports that the Islamic Republic is involved in the Palestinian resistance movement’s unprecedentedly massive attacks against the Israeli regime.

EU says not to suspend aid payments to Palestinians

The European Union

“The review of the EU’s assistance for Palestine announced by the European Commission will not suspend the due payments,” Borrell said in a statement, adding that this would have amounted to “punishing all the Palestinian people,” damaged the EU interests in the region, and “only further emboldened terrorists.”

Several hours earlier, Varhelyi announced that the “scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people” by Hamas was a “turning point” for the bloc, and that “there can be no business as usual” going forward.

He stated the European Commission would put €691 million ($728.8 million) in aid to the Palestinian Authority under review and suspend all payments right away.

Varhelyi’s announcement came two days into clashes between the Palestinian movement Hamas and the Israeli military, which has claimed hundreds of lives on both sides. Shortly afterwards, however, Israel ordered a “complete siege” of Gaza, cutting off the supply of water, food and electricity to more than 2 million Palestinians in the territory.

Janez Lenarcic, the EU commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management, also contradicted his Hungarian colleague, saying that, while he “most strongly” condemns Hamas, EU aid “will continue as long as needed.”

In a press release “clarifying” Varhelyi’s remarks, the European Commission stated it was “launching an urgent review of the EU’s assistance for Palestine,” but was not suspending any payments because “there were no payments foreseen.”

“The objective of this review is to ensure that no EU funding indirectly enables any terrorist organization to carry out attacks against Israel. The Commission will equally review if, in light of the changed circumstances on the ground, its support programs to the Palestinian population and the Palestinian Authority need to be adjusted,” the statement added.

Biden may ask US Congress for more funding to support Ukraine, Israel: WH

Biden Blinken

“We believe both are are important, support to Ukraine needs to continue… it’s a critical need, we’re going to continue to make that case on Capitol Hill,” Kirby said during a conference call on Monday.

“If we need to go back to Capitol Hill for additional funding support for Israel, we will absolutely do that.”

Earlier on Monday, US Army Secretary Christine Wormuth stated the US military will need additional support from Congress to be able to provide security assistance to Ukraine and Israel at the same time.

On Sunday, the United States announced it was providing Israel with security assistance that will begin arriving in the coming days.

US lawmakers also hope to immediately approve legislation to provide further security assistance to Israel, including to replenish its Iron Dome air defense system, but there is concern the lack of a House of Representative speaker may delay that process. The House of Representatives cannot engage in normal business until a new House speaker is elected.

A Pentagon spokeswoman told reporters on Monday Washington can meet all of Israel’s requests for weapons, equipment and ammunition while continuing to support Kiev.

“We are able to continue our support both to Ukraine, Israel, and maintain our own global readiness,” a senior Department of Defense official said in a background briefing.

“While we are providing and will continue to provide a significant amount of support to Ukraine, we are careful about ensuring we can also respond to other crises and contingencies, support other partners and maintain our own military readiness and our ability to support others,” the official later added.

Nearly two dozen killed in Turkish air raids in Syria

Kurds Syria

An air strike hit a training centre for the SDF’s local Asayish security forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a statement.

The SDF confirmed “a number of our forces were killed and others wounded” in the strike, the latest in a series of bombing raids conducted by Turkey since Thursday.

Authorities in the area had called for blood donations, while hospitals were full of casualties.

Turkey has intensified its air strikes on Syria’s Kurdish-held northeast following a bomb attack in Ankara last week that was claimed by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The SDF is mainly dominated by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) which Turkey considers an extension of the PKK.

However, the SDF has denied that those behind the Ankara attack had passed through the area.

Washington has used the SDF as its primary partner in Syria in the fight against the Islamic State group since 2014, though it considers the PKK a terror group.

A top Turkish official stated on Friday that his country wouldn’t stop pursuing “terror groups” or bow to threats following the downing of a Turkish drone by US forces in Syria.

“We will eradicate terrorism, whether in northern Iraq, northern Syria or anywhere else,” Fahrettin Altun, the Turkish president’s communications director, said, adding, “We will not bow to threats and we will not compromise our security.”

The downing of the drone on Thursday marked the first-ever NATO-on-NATO armed clash in Syria.

Hamas says will not negotiate on hostages under Israeli bombardment

Hamas

“It has become clear that the enemy’s hostages are at risk to the same extent as our people in light of the aggression against the Gaza Strip,” Abu Obaida stated, adding, “We affirm that we will not deliberate or negotiate on the issue of hostages under fire, in light of aggression, or in light of battle.”

Abu Obaida noted that al-Qassam Brigades are holding a very large number of hostages in detention sites — and that some had been killed.

The spokesman went on to say the Hamas military operation was launched after years of planning and preparations.

“[Al-Aqsa flood] came after the Zionist tyranny reached its peak in the desecration of the blessed Al-Aqsa and the aggression against it and against our people everywhere,” Abu Obaida stressed.

Israel killed hundreds and injured thousands of Palestinians over the past two years, yet still has a seat at the United Nations and receives weapons from the United States to kill children and destroy houses, he added.

The Hamas movement has also threatened to kill an Israeli hostage every time Israel bombs a Palestinian home without warning.

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said Tuesday killing hostages “will not make things better”.

Israeli authorities believe women and children are among up to 150 hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza, following the devastating attack on Israel. Hamas has claimed it is holding more than 100 captives, including high-ranking Israeli army officers.

“If they harm one of these grandmothers or one of these babies or one of these children, it will not make things better and they know it,” IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht stated.

It comes as the death toll from the armed group’s surprise attack climbed to 900 in Israel and air raids by Israel on the besieged Gaza Strip killed more than 700 people and left over 3,700 wounded.

Hezbollah targets Israel’s military posts after 3 fighters killed in shelling

Hezbollah

“After the martyrdom of three of our … brothers this afternoon as a result of Israeli attacks on Lebanese towns and villages, groups from the Islamic Resistance have carried out an initial response,” the movement said in a statement carried by Lebanon’s al-Manar television network.

The statement added that Hezbollah’s response targeted “the Braniat barracks — the command center of the Galilee Brigade — and the Avivim barracks — the command center of the Western Brigade — using guided missiles and mortar shells, causing direct hits.”

Hezbollah has identified its martyrs as Housam Mohammad Ibrahim, Ali Raef Ftouni, and Ali Hasan Hodroj.

Cited by Reuters, the Israeli military claimed that it had responded to a number of “launches” from Lebanon into the occupied territories.

The Israeli forces and the Hezbollah movement reportedly exchanged artillery and rocket fire on Monday, amid the a large-scale operation launched against the regime by Palestinian resistance groups from the besieged Gaza Strip, codenamed Operation al-Aqsa Storm.

Hezbollah has already fought off two Israeli acts of aggression against Lebanon in 2000 and 2006, forcing a humiliating retreat upon the Tel Aviv regime’s military in both cases.

The resistance movement has vowed to resolutely defend Lebanon in case of any Israeli-imposed war.

Palestinian president calls on UN to intervene against Israeli aggression in Gaza Strip

Mahmoud Abbas

Abbas made the remarks on a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to the state news agency WAFA.

Abbas called on the UN to “immediately intervene to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip,” WAFA reported on Monday.

The Palestinian president emphasized the urgent need for medical and relief aid in Gaza, drawing attention to the looming humanitarian crisis. He urged the UN to “uphold its responsibilities as recognized by international legitimacy and ensure protection for the Palestinian people.”

In response to Abbas’s concerns, Guterres acknowledged the UN’s continued efforts to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza. He also mentioned that the UN is actively liaising with pertinent international stakeholders to curb the current escalation, WAFA reported.

The PA was established in the Israeli-occupied West Bank in 1993 through the Oslo Accords, a peace pact between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It stipulated the PLO give up armed resistance against Israel in return for promises of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Gaza’s death toll has risen to 700 people, including 140 children, according to a statement by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza. The number of injured has reached 3,700 — 10% of them children — since the Israeli strikes began.

Seventeen people have been killed and 90 are injured across various parts of the West Bank, according to a statement from the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The dead included three children, it noted.

The 17 deaths occurred in Ramallah, Jerusalem, Nablus, Jericho, Qalqilya, and Hebron.

The nature and severity of the 90 injuries vary, officials say.

Clashes erupted in several areas of the occupied West Bank amid a closure imposed by the Israeli army after the Hamas attack on Saturday morning.

Turkey’s lira hits new all-time low

Lira

In September, the Turkish central bank increased the key interest rate by 500 basis points to 30%, a fourth straight hike aimed at tackling high inflation as part of a broader policy U-turn.

In August, the regulator refused to inject more foreign-exchange reserves to buoy the domestic currency and manage the exchange rate. The decision to ease regulatory requirements in the banking industry then sent the lira plummeting.

Turkey has spent some $200 billion to support the national currency in the 18 months through August, depleting reserves as it kept interest rates artificially low.

Last month, the annual inflation rate increased for the third consecutive month to 61.5% in September 2023 from 58.9% in August. The highest inflation jump since December 2022 has been primarily attributed to increases in tax rates and the devaluation of the lira.

Previously, the country’s government supported a policy of low interest rates despite high inflation. This caused a currency crisis in late 2021 and pushed inflation above 85% last year. Annual consumer price inflation is expected to rise to around 60% by year end.
