Qatar says in ‘very difficult’ talks over release of hostages held in Gaza

“It’s a very, very difficult negotiation that we’ve been dealing with,” the top Qatari diplomat told UK media.

The negotiations are complicated by the fact that Israel and Palestine have “zero confidence in each other”, he specified.

Qatar’s main goal is to reach out to the parties, Al-Khulaifi said, adding that his country remained committed to the purpose despite various difficulties.

“If the mediator wants to perform its task in the best way possible as a state, then we need to reach a period of calm. We need to reach a period where we can speak logically to both sides and come up with positive initiatives,” he stressed.

On October 7, Palestinian movement Hamas launched a surprise large-scale attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip. Hamas says the operation was a response to Israel’s relentless attacks on Palestinians, the desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Israeli settlers’ violence against Palestinians.
Israel has ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2,3 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel.

The escalation of the conflict has resulted in thousands of people killed and injured on both sides.

Continuation of Gaza war to send entire region out of control: Hamas

Ismail Haniyeh, head of the movement’s Politburo, sounded the warning on Thursday, the 20th day of a relentless war by the regime against the coastal sliver that has so far claimed more than 7,000 lives.

“Indeed, today the region has turned into a hot plate,” Haniyeh added.

The Hamas official, however, also declared, “On the 20th day of this war, we affirm that the resistance in Gaza is doing well.”

The regime launched the war after Hamas and its fellow Gaza-based resistance movement of the Islamic Jihad launched their biggest operation against Israel in years in a surprise offensive, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, in response to the occupying regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

Around 1,500 Israeli forces and illegal settlers were killed in the operation and hundreds of others were taken captive.

“It has been 20 days that, led by al-Qassam Brigades (Hamas’ military wing), the resistance has kept up its strikes, protected its borders, and sent across its message in blood,” Haniyeh stated.

“The occupation will not be able to recover due to the strategic strike and resounding defeat it suffered,” he continued.

“The current movement should not stop here, and the al-Aqsa Storm should continue for the sake of the future generations of the resistance forces,” Haniyeh said, adding, “This battle will change the course of history and will move towards achieving the highest goals of this people, who have suffered from historical injustice.”

The Hamas leader stressed the resistance was a “national liberation movement”, while “terrorism is the occupier and those who support it and remain silent about massacres”.

Haniyeh, meanwhile, addressed Tel Aviv’s plunging Gaza into a humanitarian crisis by blocking water, food, and electricity to the besieged territory since the onset of the warfare.

“I call for the opening of all crossings, especially the Rafah crossing, and the entry of everything Gaza needs without restrictions or conditions,” he said, adding, “We call for the speedy delivery of everything Gaza needs, and it is unacceptable for the enemy to control what should enter the strip.”

Pentagon admits more attacks on US bases in Middle East, will send 900 troops to region

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder said some of the soldiers had already arrived in the Middle East, while the rest would soon depart from their bases in the United States.

“The [Defense] Department remains squarely focused on supporting Israel’s defense needs in the wake of Hamas terrorist attacks, deterring a broader regional conflict and ensuring force protection for our troops serving in the region,” he stated, referring to a deadly assault by the Palestinian armed group earlier this month.

The Pentagon also confirmed at least three more attempted drone and rocket attacks on US bases across Iraq and Syria, following a series of strikes in recent weeks, including one that left 20 soldiers with “minor injuries”, according to US Central Command.

Most recently, US forces were again targeted in Iraq, but according to Ryder the attack failed.

Since October 17, US troops have been targeted a total of 16 times, with officials pinning the blame on groups “supported” by the IRGC [Islamic Revolution Guard Corps] and Tehran.

The 900 troops will man a variety of air defense systems recently stationed in the Middle East, including a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery, Patriot missile platforms and Avenger air defense systems, Ryder noted.

While he did not specify the soldiers’ destination, Ryder said they would not be deployed to Israel or take part in hostilities there, adding that the move is instead meant to “support regional deterrence efforts”.

The US Department of Defense also confirmed on Thursday that 19 US service personnel suffered what has been described as “traumatic brain injuries” during recent attacks against troops stationed at bases in Syria and Iraq.

No details were provided on the severity of the injuries.

The wave of attacks on US military outposts comes amid a new round of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, triggered after a Hamas attack claimed some 1,400 lives. Israeli forces have pounded the Palestinian enclave with airstrikes in the weeks since, killing more than 7,000 people, according to local officials, and are now preparing a ground invasion.

US officials previously announced a deployment of 2,000 marines and sailors to waters off Israel’s coast as part of a “show of force” in the region, and dispatched two aircraft carrier strike groups to the Mediterranean. The moves were meant to “send a message of deterrence to Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah,” an unnamed official told CNN.

Washington currently maintains around 2,500 troops in Iraq, and up to 1,000 in Syria, where they continue to occupy key oilfields and Euphrates river crossings with the support of Kurdish-led militias. Although Baghdad allows US forces to remain in Iraq, the government in Damascus has repeatedly condemned their presence in neighboring Syria as illegal under international law

Iranian VP for science and technology: Iran and Russia to sign partnership document soon

Rouhollah Dehghani Firouz Abadi

Dehghani made the announcement at the end of his visit to Moscow on Thursday.

He added that this cooperation document will be concluded between the scientific, technological and knowledge-based department of the Iranian presidential office and Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

Dehghani added that the document will lay the foundation for scientific and technological cooperation between the two states.

He noted that during his visit to Russia, seven agreements in the fields of science and technology, industry, agriculture, transportation and medicine as well as medical equipment were finalized between Iranian and Russian scientific foundations.

Dehghani said some agreements were about transportation industry, including shipbuilding, aviation industry and supply of transportation systems’ spare parts. He said the Russian market is intact for Iranian knowledge-based companies, stressing that Russians are very willing to work with Iran’s science and technology sector.

According to the Iranian vice president for since and technology, Iran has weathered many years of sanctions and made great technological achievements.

He went on to say that Russia has always been among the leading powers in the world of industries and technologies, and these possibilities can meet the needs of both countries.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman: Hamas ready to free captives

Israel Hostages Hamas

Kanaani made the comment in an interview with France 24 News Channel.

He noted that some other countries contacted Iran and discussed the issue with Tehran.
According to Kanaani, talks with Hamas happened in both Lebanon and Qatar.

He said Hamas has declared readiness to release the hostages just as it has already freed a number of them.

Kanaani however noted that Hamas informed Iran it can do so only if the fighting stops so that it will be able to sort civilian captives from military ones.

Hamas is said to be holding over 200 captives including some soldiers and high-ranking officers of the Israeli army.

Iranian official rejects claims Biden’s comment was directed at Ayatollah Khamenei

Joe Biden

Mohammad Jamshidi said the US has sent several messages to Iran and Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, requesting them to not let an escalation of the current crisis in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted an informed source as saying that the US started sending those messages to Iran and is continuing do send similar missives.

The source added that two messages were sent to Iran and dozens to Hezbollah.

According to the informed source, Iran has replied to the US messages, saying Washington cannot, on the one hand, send military assistance to the Israeli regime and direct the war on Gaza, and, on the other hand, issue political messages and claim to be against possible spillover of the conflict into other parts of the region.

The source told IRNA that there are some indications that new fronts will be opened in the war and if the US does not want this to happen, it has to stop the massacre of the people of Gaza.

EU falling behind on plans to supply Ukraine with ammo: Report

Weapons Arms Russia Ukraine War

The deal to prop up Kiev with the massive amount of ammunition – touted by EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell as “historic” – was first reached in March this year. Under the plan, the bloc pledged to deliver artillery shells to Ukraine over the course of 12 months by tapping into its stockpiles and placing joint orders.

However, according to Bloomberg’s sources and documents seen by the agency, although more than six months have passed, the EU has so far missed the mark, having delivered only 30% of the target amount. Based on the volume of contracts, the bloc’s members risk failing to provide Kiev with one million shells by March, the report says, adding that several EU members have privately asked Brussels to extend the deadline.

The US, which has also been trying to increase its ammunition output to support Ukraine, has urged the EU to step up its efforts on this front, the report added.

While EU nations have been reluctant to publicly disclose specific details of deliveries and contracts, some have shared figures privately at closed-door meetings, Bloomberg reports. In all, about a dozen countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and the Baltic states, have delivered or are planning to deliver a combined total of about 300,000 to 400,000 shells, according to the report. Several other countries are said to have placed orders worth more than $50 million, with production set to start next year.

In recent months, various media reports have indicated that both the US and the EU are struggling to provide Ukraine with much-needed ammunition amid its counteroffensive against Russia, which has failed to gain any significant ground.

Meanwhile, fears that Kiev could receive less aid from its Western backers have been fueled by the decision by US President Joe Biden to drop Ukraine assistance from a funding bill earlier this month to avoid a government shutdown. In addition, one Bloomberg source did not rule out that the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict could also affect the volume of aid to Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly warned the West against providing military aid to Ukraine, saying it would only prolong the conflict and make it a direct participant in the hostilities.

Top Iran cmdr.: Israeli troops to be swallowed in case of Gaza ground invasion

Hossein Salami

Major General Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), said on Thursday “With the al-Aqsa Flood operation, all colonial powers were crushed.”

He was referring to the surprise attack of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas against Israel on October 7.

General Salami also referred to the US unwavering support for Israel, adding the United States has antagonized the Muslim world, and this enmity is growing day by day.

He added Washington’s colonial policies are taking their victims in almost all territories of Islamic countries.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani blamed the US for Israeli crimes in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

“The US government is directly responsible for the crimes committed by the Israeli regime,” he said.

He said Iran’s top priority is to see an end to the Israeli bombardment of people in Gaza.

“We are witnessing an unequal battle launched by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian nation,” he added.

Around 7,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli army attacks on Gaza since October 7.

Israel says it will launch a ground invasion against Gaza.

Israel to flood Hamas tunnels with nerve gas under US navy supervision: Report

Hamas

Israel and the US hope to achieve the element of surprise in order to penetrate Hamas tunnels, rescue an estimated 220 hostages, and kill thousands of soldiers belonging to Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades, the source said in a statement, noting that the information comes from a leak originating in the US.

“The plan hinges on the element of surprise so as to decisively win the battle, using internationally forbidden gases, particularly nerve gas, and chemical weapons. Large quantities of nerve gas would be pumped into the tunnels,” the source added.

US Delta Force will oversee “large quantities of nerve gas being pumped into Hamas tunnels, capable of paralyzing the bodily movement for a period of time between six and 12 hours.”

“During this period, the tunnels would be penetrated, the hostages rescued and thousands of al-Qassam soldiers killed,” the source added.

The US is engaging with Israel on its expected invasion of Gaza.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has held near-daily phone calls with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, to discuss operations, while senior US military officials with knowledge of urban warfare have been dispatched to Israel.

During Biden’s visit to Israel last week, where he participated in a war planning session, President Biden accidentally shared a photograph that reportedly disclosed the faces of three Delta Force commandos advising Israel on hostage rescue. The post was later deleted.

Delta Force is an elite branch of the US Army Special Operations Forces. They are trained in hostage rescue, counterterrorism and “kill or capture” missions aimed at high-value targets.

They have first-hand experience participating in the rescue of hostages from the Islamic State (IS) group and conducting raids against the group’s leaders as part of the US’s campaign to defeat IS.

The leaked information says Israel’s delay in its ground invasion is misinformation aimed at gaining the element of surprise in a multifaceted attack that will include Israeli commandos landing in northern Gaza and along the coast.

The operational details of the attack have already been agreed upon, according to the source.

On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israel had agreed to delay its expected ground invasion to allow the US more time to place air defence systems in the region. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said later on Wednesday that Israel is preparing a ground invasion but gave no indication of timing or other details.

Israeli media outlets have also cited leaks regarding divisions within Israel’s three-member war cabinet made up of Netanyahu, Benny Gantz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

The source said “though not without grounds” the reports “represent a deception attempt aimed at surprising the resistance” in the Gaza Strip.

The war erupted on 7 October after Hamas led an attack in southern Israel. According to Israeli officials, around 1,400 people were killed in Israel during the assault, the majority believed to be civilians. At least another 220 people were taken as prisoners to Gaza, including soldiers and civilians.

Israel has retaliated with a mass bombardment of Gaza that has killed at least 6,500 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian health ministry. More than 70 percent of those killed are children, women and the elderly.

Israeli forces raid Gaza strip ahead of “next stages of combat”

Israeli Army

Video published by the IDF showed tanks and armored vehicles, including a bulldozer, moving on a road near a fence. The tanks fired artillery, and some destruction could be seen nearby.

The IDF said the raid was “part of preparations for the next stages of combat.”

“The soldiers exited the area at the end of the activity,” the statement added.

IDF spokesperson Peter Lerner described the raid as large but limited in scope, stating it was “a clear and sweep operation intended to create better terms for ground operations if and when that comes in.”

“We actually engaged the enemy, killing terrorists who were planning to conduct attacks against us with anti-tank guided missiles,” he told stated.

Israel has vowed to wipe out Hamas, the armed group that controls Gaza, in response to its October 7 deadly attacks and kidnap rampage in which 1,400 people, mostly civilians, were killed and more than 200 taken hostage.

In a televised address Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli is “preparing for a ground incursion”, into Gaza following nearly three weeks of airstrikes on the coastal strip.

The Israeli strikes have killed more than 6,500 people, and injured a further 17,000, according to information from Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza and published by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah.

Limited skirmishes between Israel and Hamas militants have already taken place on the ground in Gaza. An Israeli soldier killed in a clash with Hamas on Sunday is the first publicly announced Israeli military death inside the enclave since October 7, the IDF confirmed Tuesday.
