Palestinians won’t accept displacement from Gaza: President Abbas

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

“Today, our steadfast Palestinian people are subjected to a comprehensive war of extermination in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Jerusalem, with the aim of liquidating our national cause and turning it into a humanitarian cause, in a repetition of the 1948 Nakba,” Abbas said.

“But we tell them, the more your aggression and terrorism increase, the stronger, more determined, and more determined our people will become in adhering to their land and their legitimate national rights,” he added.

The Palestinian people face a “genocidal war” amid a deadly Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, Abbas stated.

“Israel’s genocidal war will not break our will. We will remain steadfast on our land and continue the struggle until we achieve victory and independence,” he continued.

The Palestinian leader stressed that the West Bank and the Gaza Strip “are one geographical unit that is indivisible”.

Abbas went on to call for putting an end to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and for expediting the delivery of humanitarian aid to the blockaded enclave.

“The only solution is to seek a political solution based on international legitimacy resolutions through holding an international peace conference that ends the Israeli occupation of all the territories of the State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of refugees in accordance with UN Resolution 194.”

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki has also released a statement ahead of the New Year condemning the “Israeli war machine’s persistence in the war of genocide”.

“We welcome the New Year and the 59th anniversary of the start of the Palestinian revolution, yet the wounds of our people are bleeding due to the Israeli war machine’s persistence in the war of genocide, destruction, and displacement.”

He stated: “We reaffirm our demand at the beginning of this year for an immediate ceasefire, and we hope and work for the New Year to be the year when the Palestinian people obtain their fair and legitimate national rights to return, self-determination.”

Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip from the air and ground since the Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, killing at least 21,822 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring 56,451 others, according to health authorities in the enclave.

Nearly 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas attack.

The Israeli onslaught has left Gaza in ruins, with 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure damaged or destroyed, and nearly 2 million residents displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine.

Reunification with Taiwan ‘inevitable’: China’s Xi

China Xi

“The reunification of the motherland is a historical inevitability,” Xi said in his New Year’s address on Sunday, according to a translation by Reuters.

“Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” he added.

An official translation by state news outlet Xinhua used simpler phrasing, quoting Xi as saying “China will surely be reunified, and all Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose”.

Xi made a shorter reference to unification during last year’s message, stating only that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are “members of one and the same family”. However, Taiwan is set to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in mid-January, and opinion polls currently show Vice President Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Party (DPP) in the lead for the presidency.

Lai has described himself as a “worker for Taiwanese independence,” while Beijing views him as a “destroyer of peace across the Taiwan Strait”, according to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office.

Taiwan has governed itself since nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek fled to the island in 1949, after they lost a civil war to the Communists. Beijing’s official position is that it will strive to peacefully reunify the island with the Chinese mainland, while reserving the right to use military force if necessary.

Xi made no mention of military force in his New Year’s speech. Last month, the Chinese government clarified that a declaration of independence by Taipei “means war”.

In 1971, the United Nations recognized the government in Beijing as the legitimate government of China, leading to many countries removing their recognition of Taiwan. Since 1972, the US has accepted, but not endorsed, Beijing’s position that “there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China”.

Russia not to back down: Putin

Vladimir Putin

“We have proven time and time again that we can solve even the most difficult problems, and we will never back down, because there is no such force that can divide us, makes us forget the memory and faith of our fathers, to stop our development,” the head of state stated.

Putin called the best guarantee of the country’s future the fact that Russians are together.

“We are one country, one big family. We will ensure the confident development of the Fatherland, the well-being of our citizens, we will become even stronger. We are together. And this is the most reliable guarantee of the future of Russia,” Putin said.

“Happy holiday to you, my dear ones, happy new year 2024! Congratulations on the holiday, my dear ones, happy new year 2024!” he added.

The president noted that the New Year is always about bright hopes and a sincere desire to please loved ones.

“The coming 2024 has been declared the Year of the Family in our country, and a real large family is, of course, one where children grow up, where attention, warmth and care for parents, love and respect for each other prevail,” he continued.

The president wished all Russian families all the best, noting that the history of each family “makes up the history of our huge, beautiful and beloved Motherland”.

“Its destiny is determined by all of us, the multinational people of Russia.”

In his New Year’s address, the head of state said words of gratitude to the participants in the special military operation.

“Today I would like to address our military personnel, everyone who is in combat duty, at the forefront of the fight for truth and justice. You are our heroes – our hearts are with you. We are proud of you, we admire your courage,” he added.

“I know that now you feel the love of your closest, dearest people, the powerful, sincere support of millions of Russian citizens, the support of the entire people,” the president continued.

UK preparing to conduct attacks on Yemen’s Houthis: Report

Yemen Houthis

Under the plans, the UK would join with the US and possibly another European country to unleash a salvo of missiles against preplanned targets, either in the sea or in Yemen itself, British newspaper The Times reported.

A government source said the coordinated strikes could involve Royal Air Force (RAF) warplanes for the first time or the HMS Diamond destroyer.

The daily reported that the UK and US are expected to release an “unprecedented statement” that will “warn the Houthis to stop attacking commercial vessels or face the military might of the West”.

Early on Sunday, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian about Houthi attacks in the Red Sea which Cameron said “threaten innocent lives and the global economy”.

Separately, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps stated on Sunday that Houthi attacks on international shipping in and around the Red Sea had increased by 500%.

“This is unacceptable as it damages world trade by illegally blocking Freedom of Navigation at Sea. These attacks must therefore stop,” he wrote on X.

Later, he added the Houthis “must end their illegal campaign against merchant shipping and stop all violent attacks immediately.”

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

The relentless Israeli military campaign against Gaza has killed nearly 22,000 people, most of them women and children. Another 57,000 individuals have been wounded.

Yemeni forces have also launched missile and drone attacks on targets in the Israeli-occupied territories after the regime’s aggression on Gaza.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most frequently used sea routes for oil and fuel shipments. Reports revealed that Israeli shipping companies have already decided to reroute their vessels in fear of attacks by Yemeni forces.

Yemen’s Houthis confirm 10 members killed in US attack in Red Sea

US Warship

Yemen’s Armed Forces have issued a stern warning to the United States on Sunday, saying Washington bears full responsibility for the consequences of a deadly attack by US Navy on Yemeni boats in the Red Sea.

The warning came through a Sunday statement after earlier the same day US Navy helicopters attacked four boats belonging to the Yemeni Naval Forces, sinking three of them and killing at least 10 Yemeni servicemen.

The statement, which was read out by Yemeni Armed Forces’ spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said the attack took place as Yemen’s boats “were carrying out their routine official duties in reinforcing security and stability, and protecting maritime navigation” in the Red Sea.

He added that the attack also took place while Yemeni forces were “fulfilling their humanitarian and ethical duty…in prohibiting Israeli ships or those heading to the ports of the occupied Palestine from passing through the Red Sea in solidarity with and support of the Palestinian people.”

“The American enemy bears responsibility for the consequences and repercussions of this crime, and that its military movements in the Red Sea to protect Israeli ships will not prevent Yemen from fulfilling its religious, ethical, and humanitarian duty in support and aid of the oppressed [people] in Palestine and Gaza,” the statement read.

Elsewhere in their statement, the Yemeni Armed Forces once again advised all countries “not to be drawn into American plans aimed at igniting conflict in the Red Sea”, affirming that they “will not hesitate to confront any aggression against our country and our people”.

Yemen’s Armed Forces have been staging missile and drone attacks against vessels heading to Israeli ports in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has been under an unrelenting genocidal war by the Israeli regime for more than two months now.

Close to 22,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed during the war, which the regime launched on October 7 following an operation by Gaza’s resistance movements, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm.

The Yemeni forces have vowed to keep up their strikes until the regime stops the war and lifts a concomitant siege that it has been imposing on Gaza.

In reaction, the United States has announced formation of an American-led naval coalition of Washington’s allies aimed at heading off the Yemeni attacks.

Washington has already admitted to the failure of the multinational task force.

Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, the top commander of US naval forces in West Asia, stated in a Saturday interview with the Associated Press that Yemen’s Armed Forces show no signs of ending their “reckless” attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea even as more nations join the international maritime mission to protect vessels in the vital waterway.

Netanyahu says he will not resign from office

Benjamin Netanyahu

Netanyahu was pressed about taking accountability during a news conference.

“Your question about the willingness to resign — that comes back again and again … The only thing I intend to resign from is Hamas. That’s what I’m going to resign from. That’s what I’m dealing with and nothing else,” Netanyahu said.

Winds have been shifting against the prime minister as Israel’s war in Gaza drags and as Hamas continues to hold hostages.

Multiple opinion polls suggest national favor toward Netanyahu and his governing coalition is collapsing, despite continued overwhelming support in Israel for the war on Hamas.

Netanyahu also stated during the news conference that Israel’s war against Hamas “will continue for many more months”.

“My policy is clear: We are continuing to fight until the goals of the war have been achieved, especially the elimination of Hamas and the release of all our hostages,” the prime minister added, according to a translated transcript of his comments released by his office.

Netanyahu also said the Israeli military is “fighting with force and new systems above and below the ground”.

“We have the upper hand, we have killed more than 8,000 terrorists,” he claimed.

Iran FM, in a phone call with UK’s Cameron, raps west double standatds regarding Ukraine and Gaza

Gaza War

In a phone call between David Cameron, the new British Foreign Secretary, and Hossein Amirabdollahian, the Foreign Minister of Iran, on Sunday, the latest regional developments and bilateral relations were discussed.

During this conversation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran expressed hope that Britain would adopt a realistic and constructive approach to regional developments and bilateral relations to enhance the atmosphere of ties.

Regarding the Palestinian crisis, the Iranian Foreign Minister stated: “The root cause of the Palestinian crisis does not date back to October 7 but to 75 years of Israeli occupation, continuous violation of Palestinians’ fundamental rights, war crimes in Palestine, and genocide against this oppressed nation. England’s role in these issues is, of course, evident.”

Amirabdollahian condemned the silence of certain Western governments regarding crimes committed by the Israeli regime against Palestinians, which have led to the killing of 21,000 civilians in Gaza over the past 80 days.

The Iranian foreign minister criticized the U.S. and certain Western countries for their double standards towards Gaza and Ukraine.
He emphasized: “The Israeli regime cannot be allowed to commit massacres of women and children, nor perpetrate genocide in Gaza and inflame the region, yet considering stopping a Zionist ship in the Red Sea as a threat to the security of this vital economic waterway.”

Regarding threats against Iran, Amirabdollahian warned: “The Islamic Republic of Iran will give a strong and regretting response to any Israeli regime’s adventurism and acts of aggression.”

During the conversation, the British Foreign Secretary called for efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran to prevent the escalation of regional conflict and ensure maritime security, referencing the positions of the UK on Palestine and the Red Sea.

Severe smog levels in Iranian capital claim nearly 6,400 lives in one year

Air Pollution

“Over 27,000 people across the country, 6,398 of them in the capital alone, have lost their lives over the past year due to air pollution,” announced Mahdi Pirhadi, the head of the Health Committee of the Tehran City Council.

He touched upon plans to standardize the quality of fuel distributed nationwide, adding, “Given the recent letter by the Oil Ministry, the implementation of a plan to standardize fuel has been postponed until 2028, which can have numerous consequences.”

The metropolis, one of the most polluted in the world, suffers from the scourge of air pollution.

Pollution levels exceed the safe threshold on most days in Tehran, with high-risk groups such as children, the elderly and the sick advised to stay indoors.

Air pollution also forces the closure of schools frequently in Tehran and other large cities.
