Report: 15,220 qualified to run for Iran’s March elections

Iranian Parliament

Tasnim added that more than half of those who had protested their disqualification from candidacy were approved. According to this report, Iran’s Guardian Council, which is responsible for vetting the candidates for any election, has now completed the list of the hopefuls.

The parliamentary elections are scheduled for March 1, 2024.

Voters will also choose members of the Assembly of Experts during the polls.

The Assembly of Experts is tasked with choosing the leader, supervising his performance and if necessary replacing him.

Alexey Navalny’s wife says Russian authorities hiding the opposition figure’s body

Alexei Navalny

Her remarks, part of an 8-minute address shared on her husband’s social media platforms, referenced “traces of another of (President Vladimir) Putin’s Novichoks’s to disappear”.

The widow of the late Russian opposition leader claimed Putin “killed the father of my children”, and “took away the most precious thing that was my closest and most beloved person”.

Yulia Navalnaya promised that she would find out who was responsible for his death and that “We will name names.”

She also promised to continue her husband’s work.

“Putin killed half of me, half of my heart and half of my soul. But the other half of me remains and it tells me that I don’t have the right to surrender,” she said, adding, “No one except ourselves will protect us.”

Novichok, which means “newcomer” in Russian, was first developed in secret by the Soviet Union during the Cold War in the 1980s, as a means of countering US chemical weapons defenses. Navalny returned to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated after being poisoned with Novichok. On arrival, Navalnvy was swiftly arrested on charges he dismissed as politically motivated.

Its existence remained secret until the mid-nineties when information regarding its production was revealed as part of a deliberate leak by disgruntled Soviet scientist and whistle-blower Vil Mirzayanov. Even today, no country outside of Russia is known to have developed the substance.

The Russian prison service announced Navalny died on Friday. The cause of his reported death remained unclear. Within hours, multiple Western public figures, including national leaders, blamed the Russian government for it. Some called out Putin personally in their statements. No autopsy results have been released so far.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Monday the death of Navalny in the Arctic prison where he was held is being investigated as required by law, regardless of Western reactions to the event.

In the absence of factual information “we believe such uncouth remarks absolutely unacceptable”, Peskov stated.

”They can hardly harm our head of state, but they definitely give no credit to those who deliver such statements,” he added.

World Court begins hearings on Israel’s occupation of Palestine

Palestine Israel ICJ

The week-long sessions are expected to hear evidence given by 52 countries.

Representatives of the United States, Russia, and China will address judges at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of ICJ.

On Monday, the UN’s highest court heard evidence from a number of states and three organizations on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East al-Quds.

In June 1967, Israel also seized the Golan Heights from Syria.

The UN sees the occupation of the Palestinian and Syrian territories as illegal.

A team of lawyers argued that Israel must be made to bear the consequences of its illegal conduct rather than reap the benefits.

“After 75 years, justice can no longer wait for the day Israel has an epiphany and suddenly decides to reverse course and commit to the law and UN resolutions.”

“Our journey in the search for justice has brought us before you, before the International Court of Justice,” they stated.

The judicial team demanded “an immediate, complete and unconditional end” to the occupation of the territories Israel has seized. The lawyers believe the regime is covering its “colonial designs” by occupying the territories.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told the UN’s top court on Monday, “The Palestinians have endured colonialism and apartheid.”

“Justice delayed is justice denied and the Palestinian people have been denied justice for far too long,” he added.

The Palestinian official called for an end “to the double standards that have kept our people captive for far too long”.

In December 2022, the UN General Assembly asked the ICJ for a non-binding “advisory opinion” on the “legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem”.

The Israeli regime has been under mounting international pressure over its savage campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip since early October.

The ICJ hearings are separate from a high-profile case brought by South Africa, according to which Israel is committing genocidal activities in Gaza.

The ICJ ruled in the South Africa case in January that Israel must do everything in its power to prevent genocide and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

But the regime remains reluctant to abide by the ICJ ruling, and has had its bloody campaign going, thanks in large part to the unqualified military and diplomatic support the United States provides to Israel.

Expert warns of anti-Iran moves by Israel and West

Israel Hamas Attack

Reza Nasri then called for a national alliance at the higher echelons of power and national unity in Iran to counter this threat, calling it a “security must”.

He made the comments on his X account.

Nasri said this new order is being engineered against Iran by Western powers and Israel.

He further said Iran is facing a hybrid war, noting that an all-out economic war has been waged against the country and Israel is stepping up its military actions inside Iran and aims to intensify its efforts to that end.

Nasri warned under the current circumstances, there is a surge in terrorist and cyber attacks while warmongering lobbies in Washington are trying to ignite a direct war between the US and Iran.

Yemen’s Houthis claim hit British ship, downed US drone

Yemen Houthis

The Houthi claims of attacks come as the United States carried out five strikes in Yemen late on Saturday night as part of Washington’s military campaign after Houthi targeting of Israeli-linked vessels disrupted global trade passing through the Red Sea. Houthis have now expanded their attacks to include US and UK ships after the two countries launched strikes on the war-torn Arab nation.

The Rubymar cargo ship suffered “catastrophic damages and came to a complete halt” after being targeted in a military operation, said Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree in a televised address on Monday.

“As a result of the extensive damage the ship suffered, it is now at risk of potential sinking in the Gulf of Aden. During the operation, we made sure that the ship’s crew exited safely.”

The British maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed that the Rubymar is a UK-registered, Belize-flagged and Lebanese-operated cargo ship that came under attack late on Sunday.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also confirmed the incident – without naming the ship – and announced it took place some 35 nautical miles (65km) south of al-Makha (Mocha) in Yemen.

“Military authorities report crew have abandoned the vessel. Vessel at anchor and all crew are safe,” it noted, adding, “Military authorities remain on scene to provide assistance”.

On Monday, Ambrey said another vessel, a US-owned and Greek-flagged bulk carrier had called for military assistance citing a “missile attack”. The UKMTO also confirmed the incident 100 nautical miles (185km) off Yemen’s Aden, with both sources reporting the vessel’s crew are safe.

The Houthi military also claimed to have downed a US-made MQ-9 Reaper attack drone over Yemen, which it said “was carrying out hostile missions against our country on behalf of the Zionist entity”.

It did not provide any evidence, but it has downed the same drone – which is worth over $30m – several times before.

The Pentagon acknowledged in November that an MQ-9 was shot down over the Red Sea. The Houthis possess surface-to-air missile systems capable of shooting down the advanced drones.

The Houthis had claimed a confirmed missile attack on a British oil tanker that the US identified as a Panamanian-flagged vessel carrying crude bound for India.

The group has been disrupting trade through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden near its shores since October in a stated effort to support the Palestinian cause against Israel and its Western backers.

The Houthi military spokesman on Monday stated the group remains undeterred and attacks will continue.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it launched successful strikes against three mobile antiship cruise missiles, one surface drone, and one underwater drone. This, it added, marked the first time since the start of the war that the Houthis tried to use an unmanned underwater vessel.

“These actions will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for US Navy and merchant vessels,” it noted.

Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 29,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, is showing no signs of stopping as Israel vows to expand its ground assault into Rafah, the last large city in the enclave where 1.4 million Palestinians are taking shelter.

Official says Iran in talks with several countries to set up joint free zones

Chabahar Port

Abdolmaleki stated that cooperation documents have been inked with six countries for setting up joint free zones.

Speaking in an interview with IRNA, he noted that giant strides have been taken in the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi to make the balance of trade at free zones positive.

He put the country’s total non-oil exports in the free- and special economic zones in 2022 at about $18 billion.

Iran is one of the countries that has designed a perfect model for the launch of joint free zones, he added.

Abdolmaleki further pointed out that priority has been given to the neighboring states for launching joint free zones, stressing that cooperating with countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Russia and China has been put on the agenda of the organization.

Gaza war unmasks rights advocates: Iran

Nasser Kanaani

Kanaani made the remarks at a weekly press briefing on Monday, as 136 days of the Israeli aggression has killed a shocking number of Palestinians in Gaza and led to a humanitarian catastrophe in the besieged territory.

He said that the Gaza war demonstrated that human right is “nothing more than a lie” as it is advertised in the media run by the countries claiming to be rights advocates.

“The disaster in Gaza removed the mask from the face of the so-called advocates of human rights and showed the extent of vileness, brutality and lies hidden within the nature of the Israeli regime, whose supporters used to refer to as a symbol of democracy,” he added.

The Iranian diplomat also noted that the occupying regime should be held to account over its almost five months of crimes against the oppressed Palestinian nation.

The United States is the main accomplice in Israel’s atrocities, he said, stressing that the usurping entity is not capable of handling the Gaza war without Washington’s support.

Israel waged its brutal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out its historic operation against the occupying regime in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

So far, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 28,985 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 68,883 others.

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, 130 Palestinian journalists are among those killed in Gaza.

Kanaani said that killing of journalist in Gaza is an Israeli war crime that can be prosecuted.

The spokesman also added while most countries and nations want an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Israeli crimes, the Zionist regime is not willing to stop its onslaught as it has failed to achieve its declared goals in the Palestinian territory.

“The Zionist regime and its criminal prime minister pursue their interests by fueling the expansion of insecurity in the region,” he emphasized.

He also noted that the Islamic Republic is making diplomatic efforts to bring about an immediate end to Israeli crimes.

Tehran, he continued, does accept intertwining the issue of a ceasefire to that of the post-war Gaza.

Omid, migratory Siberian crane, hasn’t returned to Iran

Siberian crane Omid

Visiting the Iranian media press exhibition in the capital Tehran, Hassan Akbari told Iran’s Mehr news agency, “Unfortunately, we didn’t attach a tracker to Omid and we didn’t have a special tracker due to the sanctions, so we don’t have any information about the bird.”

Every year, the rare bird spends the cold season in its refuge in the wetlands in the northern Iranian cities of Fereydunkenar and Sorkhrud.

“It has happened in the past years that Omid did not come to Iran,” Akbari also said, adding the failure to return might be due to the warm winter in Iran.

Omid flew all the way from Siberia to northern Iranian Mazandaran province over a distance of 5 thousand kilometers along with his mate, Arezoo, every year.

After his mate died, Omid has kept coming to the Iranian wetlands for 15 years alone.

Siberian cranes migrate to these lagoons from their natural habitat in Siberia after flying across Russia, Kazakhstan and the Azerbaijan Republic before arriving in Iran.

Top commander: Iran considers even minor threats serious

Mohammad Bagheri

Major General Mohammad Bagheri made the remarks on Monday in a ceremony in the southern port Iranian city of Bandar Abbas, along the Persian Gulf, where two new warships joined the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s navy fleet.

Touching on the regional developments, Major General Bagheri warned of the US military presence, saying the American forces partially withdrew, but they “came back to the region under various pretexts and in other forms.”

In other comments, the Iranian commander said the US used the ‘heroic operation’ by the Palestinian resistance forces on October 7 as a pretext to increase its military presence in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, and also expanded its unwavering support to the Israeli regime amid its genocidal campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The Iranian general said the Israeli regime has suffered an ‘irrecoverable defeat’ in its months-long onslaught that has left over 29,000 Palestinians killed and tens of thousands more injured, a large majority of them women and children.

“The Zionists suffered a defeat that cannot be compensated, but they want to make up for their failure by killing defenseless people, which is definitely impossible,” the general said.

Iranian daily warns officials not to trust ‘KGB agent’ Putin

Alexei Navalny

Iranian daily Jomhuri-e Eslami, in an article published on Monday, noted that Russian security officials have so far arrested hundreds of Navalny supporters who had gathered to pay tribute to the opposition leader whose cause of death in detention, remains unknown.

The newspaper wrote, “The move by the Russian government once again pointed the fingers of accusation at Putin, because he has a history of eliminating his opponents.”

“Putin, who was a KGB officer, managed to retain power for many years by relying on the method of killing the opposition figures,” Jomhuri-e Eslami added.

The daily also argued that Putin had always sought to conquer new lands to revive the former Soviet Union, explaining that the qannexation of Crimea and other regions as well as the invasion of Ukraine have all meant to fulfill his “expansionist policies.”

Drawing a conclusion, the newspaper warned the Iranian officials that “a person with such a mentality cannot be trusted.”

“This mentality in the international arena leads to greed and sacrificing other countries’ interests to satisfy their own ambitions,” Jomhuri-e Eslami further wrote.

The daily also noted that Russia torpedoed talks to revive Iran’s nuclear deal with the West for his war on Ukraine in order to use Iran as an accomplice in the war crimes in the ongoing battle against Kyiv.

The current Iranian government, under the policy of neighborliness, has been seeking the expansion of ties with neighbors, including Russia.
