Over 10k women killed in Gaza since outbreak of war: UN

Gaza War

“Six months into the war, 10,000 Palestinian women in Gaza have been killed, among them an estimated 6,000 mothers, leaving 19,000 children orphaned,” it said.

The report noted more than 1 million Palestinian women and girls in the Strip are facing “catastrophic hunger”, with almost no access to food, safe drinking water, functioning toilets or running water, creating life-threatening risks.

“One child is injured or dies every 10 minutes,” it added.

“Women who have survived the bombing are suffering daily starvation, sickness, and constant fear. The war in Gaza is no doubt a war on women, who are paying a heavy price for a war not of their making”, stated Susanne Mikhail, Regional Director of UN Women in the Arab States at a media briefing in Geneva.

A UNICEF official has also said children in Gaza have become the faces of the continuing war as their stories paint a “harrowing picture” of the human consequences of the conflict,

“Children are wearing a tremendous share of the scars of this war,” UNICEF communications specialist Tess Ingram – who left Gaza on Monday after spending two weeks there – told a UN press briefing in Geneva.

More than 12,000 children were injured in Gaza since October 7, 2023, she added, and this is “almost certainly an underestimate”.

“With at least 70 children injured every day, we need the number of medical evacuations to increase so children can access the care they urgently need. And with one child killed or injured every 10 minutes, above anything else we need a ceasefire.”

A lasting truce “is the only way to stop the killing and maiming of children”.

At least 46 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health there reported on Tuesday, raising the total death toll to 33,843 people.

The ministry said that 76,575 Palestinians have been wounded.

US says to impose new sanctions on Iran within days

White House

“Following Iran’s unprecedented air attack against Israel, President Biden is coordinating with allies and partners, including the G7, and with bipartisan leaders in Congress, on a comprehensive response,” Sullivan wrote in a statement.

“In the coming days, the United States will impose new sanctions targeting Iran, including its missile and drone program as well as new sanctions against entities supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s Defense Ministry. We anticipate that our allies and partners will soon be following with their own sanctions.”

Earlier Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the Joe Biden administration would use sanctions “to continue disrupting the Iranian regime’s malign and destabilizing activity”.

In addition to new sanctions, Sullivan added the administration will “continue to work through the Department of Defense and US Central Command to further strengthen and expand the successful integration of air and missile defense and early warning systems across the Middle East to further erode the effectiveness of Iran’s missile and UAV capabilities”.

Israel has also launched a “diplomatic offensive” against Iran, calling for sanctions against Tehran.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that he has contacted 32 countries calling on them to impose sanctions against Tehran. The move comes as Israel mulls a military response to Iran’s attack on Israel.

Iran announced its attacks on Saturday, using more than 300 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, were in retaliation for Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria. That attack killed 13 people, including two commanders of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

“Alongside the military response to the firing of the missiles and the UAVs, I am leading a diplomatic offensive against Iran,” Katz wrote on X.

“This morning, I sent letters to 32 countries and spoke with dozens of foreign ministers and leading figures around the world, calling for sanctions to be imposed on the Iranian missile project and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps be declared a terrorist organisation”.

UN calls on Israeli troops to end support for settler attacks in West Bank

West Bank

The call on Tuesday came a day after Israeli settlers shot dead two Palestinians in the West Bank following the killing of a Palestinian teenager during a military raid.

Separately on Saturday, dozens of settlers stormed the village of al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, killing one Palestinian and wounding at least 25 others after a 14-year-old Israeli settler went missing.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said, “Israel, as the occupying power, must take all measures in its power to restore, and ensure, as far as possible, public order and safety in the occupied West Bank.”

“This obligation includes protecting Palestinians from settler attacks, and ending unlawful use of force against Palestinians by the Israeli Security Forces,” she added.

The spokesperson described the escalating violence as “a matter of grave concern” and called on countries “with influence to do everything in their power” to ease tensions.

The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported at least 466 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank since October 7, when Israel launched a war on Gaza following an attack on southern Israel led by the Palestinian group Hamas, which governs Gaza.

Separately on Tuesday, the Palestinian human rights organisation Al-Haq announced in a statement that 112 children have been killed by the Israeli military and another three by settlers since October 7.

Settler attacks have more than doubled from an average of three to eight incidents a day, Al-Haq found. The rate of Palestinians displaced more than doubled, with 280 Palestinians displaced on average every month due to settlement expansion, which is at its highest level since UN monitoring began in 2017.

Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) on Tuesday urged the international community, as well as private actors and businesses, to act to stop the violence against Palestinians.

Meanwhile, the UN announced that it would launch on Wednesday a $2.8bn appeal for donations to help Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, according to a senior agency official.

“Of course, 90 percent of [the budget] is for Gaza,” Andrea De Domenico, head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Palestinian territories stated, noting that the original plan had been $4bn for 2024, but budgeting was slashed given the “limited ability” of humanitarian aid distribution access.

Iran president says Israel will come to know real response if they make a mistake

Ebrahim Raisi

Raisi made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting in Tehran with Vice-President of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council of Lebanon Sheikh Ali al-Khatib.

The remarks came amid reports suggesting that the Israeli regime may decide to retaliate a wave of Iranian drone and missile attacks that were carried out over the weekend in response to an Israeli airstrike on April 1 on the Iranian consulate in Syria’s capital.

Iranian authorities said after the Sunday operation targeting Israel that they were only a limited punishment for what the Tel Aviv regime did in Damascus.

They have warned that any escalation of the situation will be met with a much stronger and heavier response from Iran.

“In case of any mistake, the Zionists and their sponsors will come to know the meaning of Iran’s real and extensive response,” Raisi said.

During the meeting, the Iranian president also appreciated the stances adopted by the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council of Lebanon in support of the resistance campaign in the region.

Khatib, for his part, stated he was conveying a message of gratitude from the Lebanese people to Iran for its strong military action against the Israeli regime.

The Lebanese cleric added Iran had made Muslim nations proud by its steadfastness against pressures, sanctions and animosities over the years while he insisted that no other country in the region has ever managed to stand so firmly against a regime which he said is enjoying support from all powers of the world.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon kill three including Hezbollah commander

The Israeli military said Ismail Baz, killed in a strike on a car near the southern town of Ain Ebel, was the commander of Hezbollah’s coastal sector and was involved in planning rocket and anti-tank missile attacks on Israel.

Hezbollah issued a statement mourning Baz’s death but did not elaborate on his role in the organisation.

Separate Israeli strikes on two vehicles near the southern town of Chehabiyeh killed at least two Hezbollah members, a security source and a civil defence official claimed.

Hezbollah and Israel have traded fire in parallel to the Gaza war in the most serious hostilities since they fought a major war in 2006.

The fighting has claimed the lives of at least 370 Lebanese, including more than 240 Hezbollah fighters and 68 civilians, according to a Reuters toll and has fuelled concern about the potential for further escalation between regional enemies.

Eighteen Israelis, including soldiers and civilians, have been killed.

US treasury secretary warns Washington will tighten Iran sanctions

Speaking in a news conference in Washington, DC, Yellen said: “From this weekend’s attack to the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, Iran’s actions threaten the region’s stability and could cause economic spillovers.”

Her comments Tuesday come as global finance ministers and central bank governors gather in Washington for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring meetings.

Iran wrestling team win both freestyle, Greco-Roman Asian championships

In freestyle wrestling, Iranian athletes demonstrated remarkable dominance throughout the tournament, highlighted by Mohammad Hadi Saravi’s impressive performance in the 97 kg category, where he clinched Iran’s fourth gold medal.

In the decisive match, Olympic bronze medalist Saravi secured a commanding 9-0 victory against Kazakhstan’s Matsif, adding another championship win to Iran’s impressive freestyle medal haul.

This included gold medals from Saeed Esmaili in the 67 kg category, Nasser Alizadeh at 87 kg, and Amin Mirzazadeh in the 130 kg division.

The Iranian national team also showcased their dominance in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Bishkek Asian Wrestling Championships. The team secured five gold medals with stellar performances by Rahman Amouzaad Khalili at 65 kg, Amir Mohammad Yazdani at 70 kg, Mohammad Nakhodi at 79 kg, Amir Hossein Firozpour at 92 kg, and Amir Hossein Zare at 125 kg.

Israel kidnapped 3k Palestinians since start of Gaza war: Report

Gaza War

“Since the onset of the genocidal military campaign against Gaza, Israeli forces have detained at least 3,000 Palestinian residents of Gaza, including women, children, elderly people, as well as professionals such as doctors, nurses, teachers and journalists,” Al Mezan Center for Human Rights said in a report.

According to the report, around 1,650 Gazans are held in total isolation from the outside world at Nafha and Negev (Ketziot) prisons “under the Unlawful Combatants Law”, and are denied access to lawyer and legal advice.

This law “has been extensively utilized on Palestinian residents of Gaza as an alternative to administrative detention”, which is commonly used against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds.

Under its policy of administrative detention, the occupying regime detains Palestinians without trial or charge for up to six months; a period which can be extended for an indefinite number of times.

Citing their testimonies, Al Mezan announced the detainees are subjected to torture and inhumane treatment from the moment of their arrest.

“They were forced to strip naked, wear blindfolds, and have their wrists tied. They were also brutally beaten, deprived of sleep for several days, denied food and deliberately starved as a form of torture and collective punishment.”

Noting that the “systematic and widespread” torture inflicted upon Palestinian detainees also constitutes crimes against humanity, the group called upon the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to “swiftly” issue arrest warrants against “all individuals implicated in perpetrating and/or ordering such egregious crimes”.

Issam Younis, director general of Al Mezan, stated, “The evidence and testimonies gathered by our lawyer reveal a level of reprisals and torture that lacks any semblance of humanity. What Israel is doing to Palestinian detainees forms part of its genocide against the Palestinian people.”

“It is imperative to halt this genocide and ensure accountability for those responsible for heinous genocidal acts.”

Al Mezan also urged the international community to shoulder its “moral and legal responsibilities” and prevent and punish the crime of genocide, as well as to pressure Israel to comply with international law and abide by its obligations as an occupying power.

Israel waged the genocidal war on Gaza after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out a historic operation against the occupying entity on October 7 in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the war, the Israeli aggression has killed at least 33,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

Source says US will restrict Iranian FM’s movements in New York

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller had earlier indicated that the US would place additional travel restrictions on the minister, who will be in New York for a meeting at the United Nations.

According to the source familiar, Amirabdollahian and the Iranian delegation’s travel is restricted to the seven blocks north-south and one block west surrounding the UN headquarters in Manhattan, the Iranian Mission to the UN, the residence of their permanent representative to the UN, the six blocks surrounding Queensboro Plaza in Long Island City, and access to John F. Kennedy International Airport using a specific driving route.

Putin: Iran’s response to Israeli attack best way to punish aggressor

Iran & Russian Presidents Ebrahim Raisi & Vladimir Putin

Putin stressed: “What happened on the part of the Islamic Republic of Iran in response to this criminal act and following the Security Council inaction was the best way to punish the aggressor and a manifestation of the tact and rationality of Iran’s leaders.”

He emphasized Iran’s crucial role in maintaining regional stability. Putin strongly condemned the behavior of America and some other Western countries in creating tension in the region and stated: “Iran is one of the main foundations of stability and security in the region.”

President Raisi, in turn, underscored this act as a blatant breach of international law and a severe threat to global peace. Consequently, Iran exercised its right to retaliate with Operation True Promise, targeting the perpetrators.

The two leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, security, energy, transportation, and technology.

Both reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the implementation of existing agreements, underscoring the importance of robust collaboration between their nations.
