At least 7 killed in Israeli attack on another Gaza school compound

Gaza War

In addition to the seven killed in the strike, others were badly injured.

The Kafr Qasem school houses hundreds of displaced people in a camp west of Gaza City. Casualties were transferred to Al Ahli Hospital in the city.

Among those killed was a senior manager in the Ministry of Public Works and Housing in Gaza, Majed Saleh.

The Israeli military has struck a number of school compounds sheltering the displaced in recent weeks. On Saturday, 22 people – most of them women and children – were reported killed in an Israeli strike on a school compound in Zeitoun, in central Gaza.

At least 30 people were wounded, including several who suffered severe burns.

This is the latest in a series of Israeli raids on school buildings housing displaced people in Gaza, where tens of thousands of Palestinians driven from their homes by Israeli offensives and evacuation orders have been sheltering.

According to the Gaza media office, Israel has bombed at least 180 displacement and shelter centres to date.

More than 41,400 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in Israel’s war on Gaza since last October, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Russia says not to participate in second Ukraine ‘peace summit’

Russia Ukraine War

On Friday, Zelensky urged the West to support Ukraine as much as possible in organizing the meeting, in order to put a definitive end to the conflict in 2024. The Ukrainian leader previously said that he wanted Russia to be “at the table”, given that most of the international community supports this idea. In late August, he also suggested that India, which has positioned itself as a neutral country, could host the summit.

Zakharova, however, rejected the idea of the event.

“This process itself has nothing to do with the [conflict] settlement,” she said, calling it “a fraud by the Anglo-Saxons and their Ukrainian puppets,” she told reporters on Saturday.

“The so-called second summit has the same goal – to push through the absolutely unviable ‘Zelensky formula’ as an uncompromising basis for the settlement of the conflict, to get the global majority to support it, and in its name to present Russia with an ultimatum to capitulate. We will not participate in such ‘summits’.”

The spokeswoman stressed that Russia does not reject the idea of a diplomatic solution and is ready to discuss “really serious proposals that take into account the situation on the ground” and the conditions for talks put forward by President Vladimir Putin in June.

The Russian leader stated that Moscow would immediately start negotiations once Kiev starts withdrawing troops from Russia’s Donbass, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions and commits to neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.

Moscow has also stressed it would not talk with Kiev as long as it continues to occupy part of Kursk Region and target civilians there.

Zakharova, however, remarked that Kiev and the West “do not think about peace… They need war. This is confirmed by the bandit invasion of the Ukrainian army into Kursk Region and Zelensky’s requests to be allowed to strike deep into Russia with NATO long-range weapons. This is a continuation of terror against the population of our country. We will not talk to terrorists”.

The first “peace summit” was held in Switzerland in June, to which Russia was not invited. The event revolved around several points of Zelensky’s supposed peace formula, but did not touch on some of Kiev’s key demands of Russia, including the withdrawal of the latter’s troops from territory Ukraine claims as its own. Putin called the event a Western ploy to create the illusion of a global anti-Russian coalition and divert attention from the roots of the conflict.

Dismissed Iranian university professors ask President Pezeshkian to facilitate their return

Massoud Pezeshkian

The 12 signatories of the letter have asked President Pezeshkian to clearly express his position on expelling the university professors, whose number is said to amount to dozens.

The letter comes days after Ali Sharifi-Zarchi, a Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence professor at Sharif University of Technology was re-invited to pursue his academic career after a period of suspension for his critical political views.

The letter reads, “We, a group of expelled professors, want a clear statement and decisive move in this regard, to clarify whether there is a real determination at work or if only a handful of professors are going to return, so the matter would be used for propaganda.”

They argued, “What has unjustly happened to us is the product of a non-scientific and non-transparent mechanism of assessing general qualifications, inquisition, suppression of free thinking and intolerance to critical thinking.”

They blamed the laws and regulations that have been passed in recent years by ‘non-academic authoritarian institutions’ for their dismissal, saying they have violated academic freedom in the country.

Moretaza Nemati, Hassan Bagherinia, Abolfazl Shayan, Behrouz Chaman Ara, Ameneh A’li, Seyyed Javad Emami, Hamideh Sadat Khademi, Ahmad Rahimi, Abolghassem Rahimi, Zahra Khoshk Jan, Mohammad Soltani Ranani, Mahshid Gohari Kakhaki are the signatories of the letter.

Death toll from Israel attack on Beirut rises to 45: Lebanon health ministry

Lebanon War

“The number of dead has risen to 45 people,” a ministry statement said, updating an earlier toll of 37 from the Friday attack.

It added “work continues to remove the rubble for the third day in a row” and that DNA sampling would be used to determine the identities of some of the bodies.

The Lebanese news agency reported that the targeted building was hit by four rockets, causing the collapse of neighboring structures as well.

The Israeli army announced that the strike also resulted in the assassination of a prominent Hezbollah military leader, Ibrahim Aqil, along with other senior commanders.

Hezbollah confirmed that at least 16 of its members, including senior leader Ibrahim Aqil and top commander Ahmed Wahbi, were killed in the Israeli raid.

This strike marked the third Israeli attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs, Hezbollah’s stronghold in Lebanon, amid ongoing exchanges of fire over the past year.

Previous notable assassinations include Hamas political bureau deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri in January and Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukr in July.

The attack occurred against the backdrop of a “new wave” of Israeli escalation in Lebanon, as Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced on Thursday the war with Hezbollah has entered a “new phase”.

Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in cross-border warfare since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza, which has killed nearly 41,400 people, mostly women and children, following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 last year.

New school year begins in Iran

Pezeshkian School Year

Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, before embarking on his trip to New York to participate in the UN General Assembly’s annual session, took part in the inauguration ceremony at an elementary school for girls in southwest of the capital Tehran on Sunday.

In his speech, the president said the government is serious about improving the education system in Iran and providing standard facilities in order to create a conducive learning environment.

He asked everyone to promote unity in the country and stay away from trivial matters that take their toll on the entire nation.

The new school year began as the Education Ministry has recently employed over 90,000 new teachers, boosting the total number of teachers to 1.1 million, to prevent the repeat of last year’s experience of classrooms without teachers.

Moreover, over 7,800 new classrooms have been constructed for the new academic year, officials say.

US support for Israel main obstacle to Gaza ceasefire: Iran

Gaza War

Araqchi, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, stated that the Zionist regime has turned Gaza into a living hell, by blocking the entry and distribution of relief supplies into Gaza.

Referring to the dire situation of hospitals and medical centers in Gaza, the Iranian Foreign Minister added that even Red Cross hospitals in Gaza are suffering from a shortage of supplies, and the Zionists are preventing aid from reaching these facilities. The situation in the region is extremely dangerous, and the international community and the United Nations Security Council must address it.

The minister, citing his recent meetings with the UN Secretary-General’s representative on humanitarian affairs in Gaza and the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said that the human conditions in Gaza and the scale of crimes committed by the Israelis, as described in these meetings, are unbelievable.

The Iranian Foreign Minister stressed that despite the severity of these crimes, it is acknowledged that the Zionist regime has not achieved any of its declared goals in Gaza, that is defeating Hamas or securing the release of Israeli captives.

‘In the Arms of the Tree’ picked as Iran’s official Oscar entry

In the Arms of the Tree

The decision came after a 10-day review process by the selection committee at the Farabi Cinema Foundation, which evaluated eligible movies.

The nine-member selection committee unanimously chose “In the Arms of the Tree”, directed by Khajeh Pasha, from three final contenders.

The film tells the poignant story of a family in crisis, exploring themes of familial relationships and emotional reconnections between parents and children.

The movie received the Crystal Simorgh Award for Best Screenplay at the 41st Fajr International Film Festival.

The other finalists included the documentary “Isatis”, directed by Alireza Dehghan, and the feature film T”he Silent City”, directed by Ahmad Bahrami.

Iran has two best international feature wins, both for director Asghar Farhadi, for “A Separation” in 2012 and in 2017 for “The Salesman”.

Farhadi’s movie “A Separation” won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012, becoming the first Iranian film to win the award. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

In 2017, Farhadi won his second Oscar for Academy Award for Best International Feature Film for “The Salesman” at the 89th Academy Awards.

President Pezeshkian calls on UN to fulfill duties in order to end Israel’s crimes

Masoud Pezezhkian

Talking to reporters in Tehran on Sunday before departing for New York to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Pezeshkian added that if the United Nations were to properly carry out its mission, no country would be able to bomb and kill people simply because of its scientific and technological superiority.

He mentioned that he will use the opportunity at the United Nations to discuss these issues in meetings with officials from other countries.

Pezeshkian also expressed hope that during his trip to New York, he would be able to convey the voice of the Iranian nation and Iran’s belief in seeking justice and righteousness to the countries of the world.

The president further described the United Nations as one of the most important institutions and a great achievement of humanity, adding that the presence of presidents from various countries at the UN is an opportunity to create peace and calm in the world.

He also mentioned that one of his other objectives during the trip to New York is to engage in discussions with Iranian expatriates in the US and convey the realities of Iran to them.

“As we stated during the elections, Iran belongs to all Iranians, whether those who are in Iran or those who reside abroad.”

Hezbollah says attacked deep inside Israel

Israel Hezbollah

Sirens were activated across northern Israel in the early hours of Sunday.

If confirmed, it would be Hezbollah’s farthest-reaching attack inside Israel since the start of the ongoing cross-border clashes in October last year.

The Israeli military claimed that 10 rockets were launched from Lebanon and most were intercepted.

On Saturday, the Israeli army announced it carried out hundreds of air strikes across southern Lebanon in an effort to abort a Hezbollah attack.

The Israeli military also issued restrictions on large gatherings in northern Israel, including Haifa.

There have been no reports of casualties or other impacts of the rockets in Israel on Sunday.

But the latest violence could lead to an “imminent catastrophe” in the Middle East, the UN special coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert warned on Sunday, adding a military solution was not the answer.

“With the region on the brink of an imminent catastrophe, it cannot be overstated enough: there is NO military solution that will make either side safer.”

In its statement, Hezbollah said it carried out the attack with so-called Fadi 1 and Fadi 2 rockets, not the World War II era, Soviet-made Katyusha rockets that it has been using over the past several months.

The latest barrage of rocket fire comes after a week of Israeli attacks across Lebanon.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, wireless communication devices associated with Hezbollah exploded across Lebanon, injuring thousands and killing dozens, including civilians. Lebanon blamed the unprecedented attack on Israel.

Israel also conducted an air strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday that killed tens of people and injured dozens more.

Senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil was among those killed in the attack that levelled an entire residential building.

Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in daily clashes since the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

The Lebanese group says it will continue its attacks on Israeli bases until the regime ends its Gaza offensive.

The violence has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.

The two sides appear to be in an escalatory spiral, risking a major conflict. Hezbollah has stressed that it is not seeking an all-out war, but it is ready for one should it occur.

Israeli leaders have promised to push Hezbollah off the border and return its citizens to communities in the north, including through war if necessary.

Lebanon movement Hezbollah reported Sunday that deaths in the conflict with Israel hit 501 since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023.

Spate of Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah may lead to ‘cessation of hostilities’: US

Lebanon War

But he suggested the widescale attacks could actually dampen rising tensions in the Middle East region.

“While the risk of escalation is real, we actually believe there is also a distinct avenue to getting to a cessation of hostilities and a durable solution that makes people on both sides of the border feel secure,” Sullivan told reporters.

The blowing up of pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon this week killed dozens of people and injured more than 3,000 others. Israel has been widely blamed but has not taken responsibility for the brazen attacks.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said in a statement he had cancelled a trip to the United Nations General Assembly and decried “horrific massacres” after deadly attacks across the country blamed on Israel.

Mikati added that he cancelled his trip “in light of the developments linked to the Israeli aggression on Lebanon”.

The US Embassy in Lebanon has also urged American citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial flights are available due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The US State Department issued an updated travel advisory on Saturday, warning Americans: “Do Not Travel to Lebanon due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, unexploded landmines, and the risk of armed conflict.”

The level-four advisory – the highest issued by the State Department – said that US citizens in southern Lebanon, near the borders with Syria or in refugee settlements should “depart those areas immediately”, citing potential cross-border attacks and clashes between security forces and “extremist” groups.

Those who decide to remain in the country should be prepared to shelter in place if the situation worsens, the alert added.
