Lebanon: Israel conducted strike on Rafik Hariri Hospital

“The ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon records a series of daily attacks that affect the Lebanese health sector. The latest of these occurred this evening with the targeting of two major hospitals in the capital and Mount Lebanon,” the ministry said in a statement.

“After the Israeli enemy threatened the Sahel Hospital in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which was still partially operational despite extremely difficult security conditions, a hostile raid hit one of the entrances of Rafik Hariri University Hospital,” the statement noted, adding that the hospital continues to operate normally.

The Israeli strike near the Hariri Hospital killed 13 people, including a child, and injured 57, the ministry said, adding it had caused “significant damage to the hospital”.

Seventeen of the wounded were hospitalized, with seven in critical condition, it noted.

The head of Sahel hospital in Beirut’s southern suburbs has also denied an Israeli claim that Hezbollah buried at least half a billion dollars in gold and cash under the building, as he called on Lebanon’s army to visit the site and debunk the claim.

Israel earlier claimed that Hezbollah had buried funds underneath the hospital.

Hospital director Fadi Alameh told Reuters on Monday that the hospital is evacuating patients, following the claim.

While cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah continued since the Gaza war last October, Tel Aviv escalated its offensive in Lebanon late last month, killing Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah and many other commanders.

The extensive air attacks, followed by a ground invasion, have killed more than 2,500, injured over 11,500 and displaced around 1.3 million people.

US shouldering responsibility for enabling potential Israeli attack against Iran: Envoy

Amir Saeed Iravani

Iravani made the remarks in a letter addressed to the UN Security Council on Monday after US President Joe Biden said during a press conference in Berlin that he was aware of “how and when Israel intends to launch an attack against the Islamic Republic.”

The envoy called the remarks “profoundly alarming and provocative”, saying they indicated the US’s “tacit approval and explicit support for Israel’s unlawful military aggression against Iran”.

Iravani added the support, which has seen Washington arming Tel Aviv with technical expertise and advanced weaponry, “would make the US government ‘complicit’ in any Israeli aggression against Iran and its consequences.”

The Israeli regime, which enjoys all-out political and military support on the part of the United States, its biggest ally, has been threatening to attack the Iranian territory in response to the country’s retaliatory strike against the occupied Palestinian territories in early October.

The retaliation saw Iran targeting the Zionist entity’s military and intelligence bases in reprisal for the regime’s deadly acts of aggression against the regional countries, including the Islamic Republic.

Tehran has defended the retaliation as a legitimate act of self-defense that took place after a long period of self-restraint.

Washington, Iravani reminded, was already complicit in the Israeli regime’s October 2023-present genocidal war on the Gaza Strip and deadly escalation against Lebanon due to its providing Tel Aviv with ample military support.

The support that emboldens the Israeli regime to commit further acts of regional aggression contradicts the US’s consistent claims of backing de-escalation in the region, the envoy noted.

Iravani called on the Security Council to unequivocally condemn such reckless behavior on the part of the American administration and demand it to rather fulfill its obligations under international law and the UN Charter.

Syria says two civilians killed in missile attack in Damascus

“The Israeli enemy launched an air attack targeting a civilian car in the Mazzeh residential neighbourhood in Damascus, which led to the death of two civilians, the injury of three others and material damage to private property in the surrounding area,” the source said.

Some Israeli news reports suggested that Islamic Jihad’s Secretary-General, Ziad al-Nakhala, was the target of the missile attack.

The Palestinian resistance movement, however, issued a statement rejecting reports that Nakhala’s vehicle was hit as “completely false”.

But the Israeli army has claimed that a strike in Syria’s capital killed the commander of a Hezbollah unit who was responsible for the transfer of weapons from Iran.

Hezbollah has not commented yet on the raid.

The Zionist regime has repeatedly struck Syria with air raids and artillery attacks since last October, when the ongoing genocidal war in the Gaza Strip began.

640 Palestinians killed by Israel in north Gaza in more than 2 weeks

Gaza War

“Genocide is unfolding in northern Gaza in its clearest form, in full view of the world,” the Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry warned in a statement on Sunday.

“The occupation army is forcing residents of northern Gaza to either flee under bombardment or face killing in what resembles a circle of certain death,” it said, adding that the failure of the international community to stop this “war of extermination has emboldened Israel to continue its deadly campaign”.

Civilians in northern Gaza are “trapped” in their houses amid “a mass blackout”. Food, water, and medicine have run out. While Israeli air attacks have hit several areas across Gaza, the concentration of its army attacks remains in the north, particularly Jabalia refugee camp.

Meanwhile, Palestinian women forced to flee north Gaza said the Israeli army is separating and arresting dozens of men at checkpoints.

The United Nations Human Rights Office has announced that Israel “may be causing the destruction of the Palestinian population in Gaza’s northernmost governorate through death and displacement”, amid continuous bombardment across the besieged enclave.

Israel’s brutal onslaught on the Gaza Strip has killed more than 42,600 people, mostly women and children, and wounded 99,800 others since October last year – although the numbers are likely to be far higher with thousands of victims buried underneath the rubble.

Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner general of the UN relief agency for Palestinians, UNRWA, has described the toll of three weeks of “non-stop” Israeli bombardments on northern Gaza.

He said his staff are reporting shortages of water, food and medical care, with the “smell of death” everywhere across the territory because dead bodies are being left under rubble or lying on the roads.

“Missions to clear the bodies or provide humanitarian assistance are denied. In northern Gaza, people are just waiting to die. They feel deserted, hopeless and alone. They live from one hour to the next, fearing death at every second,” Lazzarini wrote on X.

He called for an “immediate truce” even if just for a few hours to enable Palestinian families to flee safely without being killed by Israeli bombardments.

“This is the bare minimum to save the lives of civilians who have nothing to do with this conflict,” Lazzarini added.

Iran police chief: 2 million illegal Afghans to be deported by March 2025

Afghan migrants in Iran

General Radan however said those Afghans who entered Iran legally are our guests and they have police support.

He added that he on Monday met a number of MPs at the Iranian parliament who were “concerned” about the issue of foreign nations who are illegally in Iran.

Iran has hosted millions of Afghans over the past decades without getting any assistance from international bodies, most notably the UN.

Iran has criticized those organizations for their failure to help the country cope with the huge influx of asylum seekers from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover in 2021.

Unofficial reports put the number of Afghan refugees in Iran at 10 million.

THAAD anti-missile system ‘in place’ in Israel: US

THAAD, or the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, is a critical part of the US military’s layered air defence systems and adds to Israel’s already formidable anti-missile defences.

“The THAAD system is in place,” Austin said.

He declined to say whether it was operational, but added: “We have the ability to put it into operation very quickly and we’re on pace with our expectations.”

President Joe Biden stated that the THAAD’s deployment, along with about 100 US soldiers, was meant to help defend Israel, which is weighing an expected retaliation against Iran after Tehran fired 200 missiles at Israel earlier this month.

On October 1, Iran responded to the Israeli assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC general Abbas Nilforoushan by launching as many as 200 ballistic missiles toward the Zionist regime’s military and intelligence bases all over the occupied Palestinian territories.

While the Zionist regime has threatened to retaliate, Iranian officials have warned that Tehran’s reciprocal response to any Israeli action will be harsh, proportional and well-calculated.

South Korea summons Russian envoy over “North Korean troops’ deployment”

Russia Ukraine War

Seoul and Kyiv have accused North Korea of preparing to transfer between 10,000 and 12,000 military personnel to Russia in a sign of deepening military cooperation between the two countries.

Some North Korean troops had reportedly already arrived in Russia and Russian-occupied Ukraine to share experiences with their Russian counterparts.

South Korea’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun summoned Zinoviev to call for the “immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops and (to) stop relevant cooperation” with North Korea, Yonhap wrote, citing the South Korean Foreign Ministry.

The South Korean diplomat “condemned in the strongest terms the illegal military cooperation, including… (North Korea’s) troop deployment, and sternly warned that South Korea will respond with every possible means, with the international community, to any acts that threaten the core interests of South Korea”.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced it believes North Korea will deploy four brigades totaling 12,000 soldiers to the war in Ukraine, including 1,500 special forces. It would mark the first time North Korean forces had been deployed to a foreign war.

It remains unclear what steps Seoul is planning to take. Yonhap reported in June that South Korea is mulling openly providing arms supplies to Ukraine in response to deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

The Kremlin has previously denied the reports of North Korean troop dispatch as fake news.

Iran begins construction of 110 residential units on Abu Musa Island, Persian Gulf

Persian Gulf

Arsalan Maleki publicized that Abu Musa, as well as the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, are an inseparable part of the Islamic Republic of Iran, asserting construction on the islands is fully permissible under Iranian law.

Maleki highlighted that there is a legal mandate to provide housing for residents and those interested in living on the island.

The directive for constructing 110 units has been issued to the relevant authorities, and the construction operations will soon begin, he said.

He further stressed that Abu Musa Island is considered a territory belonging to Iran, where the government holds full rights for development.

According to Maleki, the housing allocation process will prioritize the island’s current residents, but other interested individuals from across the country can also apply for housing on Abu Musa Island.

Abu Musa Island, located in the Persian Gulf, has strategic importance due to its location and potential resources despite its small size.

Over the years, Iran has faced territorial disputes with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over the sovereignty of the trio islands, with the West and some Arab states taking sides with the Emirates.

Prominent communication scholars urge Iran Judiciary chief to halt sentences of journalists

Niloufar Hamedi & Elaheh Mohammadi

The letter was published on Monday, a day after the lawyers for Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi announced that they have received notices to report to prison within five days to begin serving their five-year sentences despite having been pardoned by the Leader.

The letter reads, “We, a group of seasoned journalism teachers, hope that with your favorable order, the execution of these sentences will be halted, and the slight hope that has been created will not turn into despair.”

The letter further emphasizes that the request extends to all imprisoned journalists, noting that “undoubtedly, we and you believe that the place of a writer is not in prison, and a journalist is merely narrating events.”

The signatories of the letter include Ali Akbar Qazizadeh, Hadi Khaniki, Mohammad Mehdi Forghani, Behrouz Behzadi, Bijan Nafisi, and Hassan Namak Doust.

The head of Iran’s reformist front, Azar Mansouri, also called on Sunday for a halt to the journalists’ prison sentences.

The Iranian judiciary has not yet commented on the request.

Blinken to depart for a high-stakes trip to Middle East

Blinken

US officials, including President Joe Biden, have stressed to their Israeli counterparts to capitalize on the Hamas leaders’ killing to bring the more than year-long conflict to a conclusion. Biden announced last week that he would dispatch his top diplomat to the region with those aims.

Still, questions remain about the impact of Sinwar’s death on the hostage and ceasefire negotiations — discussions that had all but collapsed mere weeks ago — and it remains to be seen whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Hamas is truly prepared to end the war.

“Now is the time to move on — move on, move towards a ceasefire in Gaza, make sure that we move in a direction that we’re going to be in a position to make things better for the whole world,” Biden said he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call last week.

“Today, evil has suffered a heavy blow, but the task before us is not yet complete,” the Israeli PM stated in remarks following Sinwar’s death.

Moreover, the specter of Israel’s response to Iran for Tehran’s missile attack’s earlier this month still looms large, bringing with it the potential for regional conflagration.

That risk of escalation is compounded as Israel has continued its heavy military campaign in Lebanon against Hezbollah.

Blinken plans to “discuss the need to reach a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah”, the State Department announced in an announcement about his trip.

Netanyahu’s spokesperson has said that “new ideas” for a captives deal in Gaza were considered during a high-level security cabinet meeting overnight.

“During the meeting, new ideas were brought up to examine their feasibility for a hostage release proposal,” the spokesperson added.

It has been a year since the Hamas-led attack on Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and about 250 captured and taken to the Gaza Strip. Nearly half the captives have been released. Others are still in captivity with some confirmed or feared dead. Tel Aviv estimates that there are 100 hostages in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has killed more than 42,600 people in its genocide of the Palestinians in the besieged enclave.

The Israeli onslaught has displaced almost the entire population of the territory amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.

Mediation efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire and prisoner swap agreement between Israel and Hamas have failed over Netanyahu’s refusal to halt the war.

While cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah continued since the Gaza war last October, Tel Aviv escalated its offensive in Lebanon late last month, killing Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah and many other commanders.

The extensive air attacks, followed by a ground invasion, have killed more than 1,800, injured over 9,300 and displaced around 1.3 million people.
