American tycoon Elon Musk threatens to ‘nuke’ people behind Russia-links smears

Elon Musk

His remarks come after US Democratic Party Senators Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Jack Reed of Rhode Island called for an investigation into the tycoon’s alleged communications with Russian officials.

In a letter to Pentagon Inspector General Robert Storch and Attorney General Merrick Garland, the senators cited an October article in the Wall Street Journal claiming that Musk held several conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2022, as well as other high-ranking Russian officials.

The newspaper relied on anonymous sources, including current and former US officials. It offered no evidence to support the assertions.

The senators have called into question Musk’s reliability as a government contractor, noting his involvement in government-funded projects through his companies Tesla and SpaceX. They raised concerns that Musk may have access to classified information, given SpaceX’s collaboration with American space agencies. In their letter, the lawmakers suggest that an investigation is needed to determine whether Musk and his companies should remain eligible for government contracts.

Musk has dismissed the senators’ claims, calling them “puppets” and questioning who was behind the letter.

“Who actually wrote this and made those knuckleheads sign it?” he wrote.

“There will be consequences for those who pushed foreign interference hoaxes.”

In a separate post on X in which Musk defended US President-elect Donald Trump’s pick of Congressman Matt Gaetz as attorney general, he said, “The Hammer of Justice is coming.”

The controversy surrounding Musk’s alleged links to Russia echoes similar accusations against other prominent figures. During his first term in office, Trump faced repeated claims of collusion with Moscow, which were fueled by media reports and investigations. The allegations were widely used to undermine his presidency and were later found to be unsubstantiated.

The Kremlin has denied the reports of Musk’s frequent communication with Putin, with Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov calling the allegations yet another thing “tossed into” the political struggles surrounding the election.

Musk has actively supported the president-elect and has become an increasingly influential figure among Republicans. This week, Trump appointed Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new initiative that will be tasked with reducing government waste.

Flares fired toward Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea

Benjamin Netanyahu

“Around 19:30 Tel Aviv time (1730GMT), two flares were detected that were fired near the Prime Minister’s house in Caesarea, where they fell in the yard of the house,” said police.

“Forces from the police and the Shin Bet security service (Shabak) are present at the scene of the incident,” they added.

Netanyahu and his family members were not home at the time of the incident, noted police.

Police announced they had “opened a joint investigation with the Shabak, as this is a serious incident that represents a significant escalation, and necessary investigative actions will be taken”.

The official Israeli Army Radio reported that the flares did not cause damage.

Neither police nor the Army Radio noted the source of the flare.

Netanyahu’s office said Oct. 19 that a drone launched from Lebanon targeted Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea — an attack later claimed by Hezbollah.

Netanyahu and his family were not at home at the time, and no sirens were sounded in the area in connection with the incident, according to Israeli media.

Israel launched an air campaign in Lebanon against what it claims are targets of the Hezbollah group in late September, in an escalation from a year of cross-border warfare.

More than 3,400 people have been killed, nearly 14,700 injured and more than 1 million displaced by Israeli attacks since last October, according to Lebanese health authorities.

Despite international warnings that the Middle East region was on the brink of a regional war, Tel Aviv expanded the conflict by launching an incursion into southern Lebanon in early October.

Former VP hopeful President Pezeshkian will negotiate with Trump administration, tackle foreign policy issues

Pezeshkian and Trump

In an interview with Etemad newspaper, Ebtekar emphasized the need to utilize all national capacities to overcome the current challenges facing the country.

Ebtekar criticized previous “inefficiencies, mismanagement, and extremism for leading the country into its current dire situation.”

She highlighted the importance of ending the profiteering sanctions, which she said benefits individual and factional interests over national ones.

According to Ebtekar, “The Pezeshkian administration must put an end to this anti-national profiteering.”

She also noted that some of the government’s promises, such as lifting internet filtering, have yet to be fulfilled despite significant efforts, warning citizens remain dissatisfied with the lack of concrete progress.

While acknowledging the difficulties, Ebtekar expressed optimism about the current administration’s trajectory, but stressed the need for comprehensive efforts to address the nation’s problems.

War will end ‘faster’ under Trump: Zelesnky

Russia Ukraine War

Zelensky acknowledged the tough circumstances his military is in currently during an interview with Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne, which was published Saturday, but emphasized that the conflict has to end “next year through diplomatic means”.

The Ukrainian leader told the outlet the conflict “will end faster with the policy of this team that will now lead the White House,” referencing the incoming Republican administration.

Trump has repeatedly said on the campaign trail that the invasion, which has been ongoing for over two-and-half years, would not have occurred if he was still in the White House and argued he could end the conflict in one day without elaborating on exactly how.

“This is their approach, their promise to their society, and it is also very important to them,” Zelensky said in the interview.

The Russian military has made advances in parts of southeastern and eastern Ukraine as it also prepares to kick off a counteroffensive in the Kursk region, an area where Kyiv made gains in August.

“There is a slow but steady pressure and advance of the Russians,” Zelensky stated but also pointed to losses the Russian military sustained in recent weeks.

Following Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, Zelensky said he had a productive conversation with the president-elect, a phone call that was joined by billionaire Elon Musk.

“This is the kind of America that Europe needs. And a strong Europe is what America needs, to my mind,” the Ukrainian leader noted earlier this month.

“This is the connection between allies that must be valued and cannot be lost,” he added.

Iran’s next steps in space: Launching Noor 4 satellite

Iran Zoljanah satellite carrier

Major General Ali Jafarabadi, in an interview with the IRIB state TV outlined the space unit’s continued efforts to support the IRGC’s reconnaissance, communications, and command and control operations.

General Jafarabadi detailed the capabilities of the Noor 3 satellite, which can capture high-resolution images with a five-meter precision from an altitude of 500 kilometers.

The satellite also features a signal collection sensor for communications interception, acting as a relay to enhance connectivity.

The Noor satellites primarily serve defensive support roles, including reconnaissance and data gathering.

Noor 4 is expected to be an upgraded version of Noor 3 with operational capabilities including establishing communications between military units and improving reconnaissance efforts.

General Jafarabadi emphasized Iran’s self-reliance in satellite technology, a necessity due to international sanctions and technology embargoes.

Despite these challenges, Iran has developed its launch vehicles, including the Qased and Qaem 100, which use solid and liquid propulsion systems, he explained.

Highlighting Iran’s position among the 10 nations capable of satellite launches, General Jafarabadi noted the unique aspect of Iran’s indigenous technology development. Unlike countries like India, which imports components, Iran has developed its capabilities domestically.

The IRGC collaborates with hundreds of Iranian knowledge-based companies for satellite and launch vehicle subsystems, ensuring a robust and independent space industry.

Israel’s president cancels trip to world climate summit due to security concerns

Isaac Herzog

A statement reported by Israeli Channel 12 said: “In light of the security situation assessment and for security concerns, President Herzog has decided to cancel his trip to Azerbaijan to attend the climate summit.”

The statement did not provide details on the “security concerns”, but Israel’s ongoing 13-month war on Gaza – which has killed nearly 44,000 people, most of them women and children – has damaged Israel’s reputation in the eyes of the international public, millions of whom fiercely oppose the war.

Herzog was scheduled to attend the international summit, which includes leaders from around the world. His visit to Azerbaijan, a country neighboring Iran, was planned to be short, lasting only a few hours.

Herzog was supposed to participate in the COP29 climate conference in the country on Nov. 20, reported Israeli daily the Jerusalem Post.

COP29 began in Baku, on Nov. 11 and lasts through Nov. 22.

Negotiations with Europe may begin soon: Iran

Abbas Araghchi

Araghchi made the comments on Saturday during an interview broadcast on Iranian state TV, taking questions on various issues from Iran’s nuclear program to the country’s policy over the ongoing developments in the West Asia region.

He stated that Iran is ready for cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if the agency takes the path of interaction; otherwise, Iran will take new measures in case that the agency’s Board of Governors issues a new resolution against Iran.

“Our behavior towards the IAEA is completely professional. The agency is a technical body and should fulfill its duties in the technical field, and it does not have the right to enter political fields”, the Iranian foreign minister noted.

Araghchi added that Iran’s approach was conveyed to the IAEA director general, Rafael Grossi, during his latest trip to the Islamic Republic earlier in the week.

The minister reiterated that Iran remains committed to its obligations under the IAEA as well as the nuclear non-proliferation treaty known as NPT.

He stated however that Iran has stopped its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, which is officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in response to the US withdrawal from the deal and Europe’s failure to compensate for Washington’s pullout.

Yet, Iran is ready for talks over the JCPOA, and negotiations with Europe may begin soon, Araghchi noted.

Regarding ties with the United States, the top Iranian diplomat said that his country is waiting for the new American administration to be formed and its policies to be announced.

“We pursue our policies and principles and arrange them based on our interests as well as goals and ideals. We will behave the new US administration based on their policies,” Araghchi continued, adding that US actions matter to Iran, and that the current picks for the new American administration are extremist when it comes to support for the Israeli regime.

Araghchi also said that no meeting took place between Iran’s ambassador to the UN and Elon Musk in New York, dismissing American media reports on such a meeting.

He also explained that Iran delayed to deny the reports because it believed that they were unworthy to respond and could be media hype against the Islamic Republic.

Report: Tehran ranks fourth among world’s most polluted cities

Air pollution

According to IQAIR, the most polluted city in the world is Lahore, Pakistan. The second and third ones are respectively the Indian and Bangladeshi capitals, New Delhi and Dhaka.

The air pollution of Tehran in this time of the year is partly blamed on the weather phenomenon known as inversion.

But what is mostly to blame for the Tehran pollution is the huge number of vehicles in the city and the relatively low quality of the fuel they use. Authorities in Tehran have been trying to reduce the air pollution including halting the burning of mazut for generating electricity.

But observers say this measure alone will not be able to considerably reduce air pollution in megacity.

Scholz’s call with Putin risks opening a ‘Pandora’s Box’: Ukraine

Russia Ukraine War

Scholz spoke with Putin for the first time in nearly two years. The German chancellor condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine, urged the Russian leader to withdraw his troops, and discussed potential talks with Kyiv.

Scholz had informed Zelensky in advance of his intention to call Putin. Zelensky reportedly responded, “This will just make Putin feel that the isolation is decreasing”, according to Suspilne, citing an undisclosed source in the Presidential Office.

In his evening address, Zelensky criticized any negotiations that could ease Russia’s isolation without meaningful outcomes.

“It is extremely important for Putin to loosen his isolation, Russia’s isolation, and to conduct ordinary negotiations that will not result in anything — as he has been doing for decades,” Zelensky added.

“This has allowed Russia to change nothing in its police, to do nothing in essence, and this is exactly what led to this war.”

Zelensky also reiterated that there would be no “Minsk-3”, referencing the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015, which proposed creating autonomous zones in Russian-occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts but excluded mention of occupied Crimea.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry also expressed concerns over the Scholz-Putin call, stating that such lengthy conversations have been a tool Putin has exploited for over 20 years, now providing him hope for easing his international isolation.

“Even if the German chancellor did not express any positions contradicting Ukraine’s stance, conversations with the Russian dictator do not add value in achieving a just peace,” the ministry announced in a statement.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine and Russia held talks in Istanbul in March 2022, but the negotiations were eventually abandoned after Ukrainian retook the north of the country and mass war crimes were discovered in the liberated areas.

In comments to Ukraine’s Peace Summit in June this year, Zelensky stated the Istanbul talks failed because of the Russian side’s “ultimatums”.

Iran denies meeting between UN envoy, Elon Musk

Esmael baghaei

In an interview with IRNA’s correspondent on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei refuted the claim, expressing surprise at the extensive media coverage by American outlets regarding the alleged meeting.

The New York Times had reported that Musk, the American billionaire who played a significant role in Trump’s victory, met with Iravani in a secret location to discuss ties between Tehran and Washington and find ways to de-escalate tensions.

The newspaper cited two anonymous Iranian sources, claiming the meeting took place on Monday in New York and lasted over an hour. According to the sources, the meeting was described as ‘positive.’

CBS News also reported on Friday evening that the meeting occurred at the residence of Iran’s ambassador to the UN in New York.

The American media outlet noted that it remained unclear whether Trump was aware of the meeting between Musk and Iravani.

In response to a question from TASS news agency about the claims, a representative of Iran’s permanent mission to the UN stated, “We have no comment on this matter.”
