The Iranian volleyball team beat Australia in a four-setter (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17) in the second round of FIVB World Championships in Poland Wednesday (September 11).

Amir Ghafur was the top scorer for Iran which bagged all three points of the game.

After the match, Iran coach Slobodan Kovac said “This was not our best game; only in the fourth set we had a good performance.… We will now focus on the game with Argentina.”

Iran’s captain Saeed Marouf said, “It was a very dangerous match…. We felt too sure against Australia and we believed that this game would be over fast. Fortunately, what counts most are the three points we earned today.”

Iran will line up against Argentine later on Thursday.

Obama says US will bomb ISIL in Syria

“I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq,” Obama said during a speech delivered from the White House on Wednesday.

“America will lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat,” he added.

The Pentagon announced that the United States already has conducted 154 airstrikes against ISIL targets in Iraq.

During his speech, the US president outlined Washington’s strategy against the terrorists.

“Our objective is clear: We will degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy,” Obama said.

“In a region that has known so much bloodshed, these terrorists are unique in their brutality. They execute captured prisoners. They kill children. They enslave, rape and force women into marriage,” he said.

“They threatened a religious minority with genocide. In acts of barbarism, they took the lives of two American journalists — Jim Foley and Steven Sotloff.”

“This is a core principle of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”

Meanwhile, President Obama said Washington will train and equip opposition militants fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

He vowed to deploy more troops inside Iraq but said the servicemen would be assigned to training and intelligence duties.

He also assured the American people that the new campaign will be different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and it will not involve combat troops fighting on foreign soil.

“This counterterrorism campaign will be waged through a steady, relentless effort to take out ISIL wherever they exist, using our air power and our support for partner forces on the ground. This strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while supporting partners on the front lines, is one that we have successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years,” Obama said.

Iran, three EU states to hold meeting on nuclear issue

The quartet meeting between senior Iranian nuclear negotiator, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, and the representatives of France, Britain and Germany will take place within the framework of nuclear talks in the Austrian capital on Thursday.

Recently, Araqchi held separate bilateral talks with French representative to the Sextet group of world powers, Nicolas de Rivière, in Paris, and the US representative in nuclear talks, Wendy Sherman, in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are expected to resume negotiations over a final deal on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York on September 18.

Last November, Iran and the six countries signed an interim deal in Geneva, which took effect on January 20 and expired six months later on July 20.

In July, the two sides agreed to extend negotiations until November 24 after they failed to reach common ground on a number of key issues.

“Peace and stability in Tajikistan, as an important country in the [Central Asia] region, can be significant for peace and stability in the entire region,” Rouhani said in a joint press conference with his Tajik counterpart, Emomali Rahmon, in Dushanbe on Wednesday.

Referring to cultural and historical commonalities between the Islamic Republic and Tajikistan, Rouhani noted that the two countries’ governments are seeking to consolidate Tehran-Dushanbe ties in all fields.

He also felicitated the Tajiks on Tajikistan’s National Day, adding that Iran was the first state to recognize the Central Asian country’s independence in 1991.

The common language spoken in Iran and Tajikistan calls for the expansion of tourism industry and increased efforts by businessmen, merchants and entrepreneurs to strengthen economic ties between the two countries, the Iranian president added.

He further expressed hope for the development of bilateral relations, saying that increased Tehran-Dushanbe ties will undoubtedly benefit other governments and the whole region.

President Rouhani traveled to Tajikistan for a three-day visit on Wednesday to participate at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The SCO is an intergovernmental organization that was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Iran, along with four other countries, holds observer status in the organization.

Rouhani and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon led the inauguration of the second turbine at Sangtuda-2 hydropower plant via videoconference in the Tajik capital city of Dushanbe on Wednesday.

“We are delighted to announce that one of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s engineering efforts is bearing fruit in this country, and a hydropower plant is being inaugurated,” Rouhani said at the ceremony.

“However, this inauguration does not mean that this is the end of the road, but it means the start of cooperation between the two countries in different economic sectors,” he added.

The construction of the plant, which is expected to generate 1 billion kilowatts/hour of electricity a year, started in March 2007. Iran has invested USD 180 million dollars in the plant which will be fully handed over to Tajikistan after being used by Iran for 12.5 years.

The first unit of Sangtuda-2, built over the Vakhsh River, south of Dushanbe, was launched in 2011 by Iran’s then president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Rouhani traveled to Tajikistan for a three-day visit on Wednesday to participate at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Rouhani and Rahmon held talks in the Tajik capital and presided over the signature of nine agreements in the fields of science, industry, economy and technology.

The SCO is an intergovernmental organization that was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran along with four other countries holds observer status in the organization.

Bringing the last order under control

suicide
suicide

Today’s editorial of Afarinesh newspaper focused on the issue of “suicide” and was timed to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10. The following translation reflects, though brief, what contributes to this social issue and a possible remedy to address it.

[…]

A look at a raft of suicide cases reveals that the decision to end one’s life usually comes on the heels of financial setbacks or emotional breakdown. Such failure can emanate from social, cultural, economic, and family factors. Thus, among other things, promotion of public mental health and awareness, encouraging people to take part in social activities, workout, spending great time in a group, treatment of mental disorders, easy access to health and medical care, and an improvement in economic and social welfare across the society, can potentially fix this issue.

12There is no need to say that one of the best and most effective precautionary measures is last- moment “support and supervision” when the final command is given by the brain to the person to take their life. We are utterly ignorant of the fact that our indifference and busy lives have turned us into people who are neglectful of their friends and all those around them.

Overwhelmed by the thought that others and society do not care about them, suicidal people views themselves as a burden on others as well as on themselves, and come to the conclusion that it would be much better to put an end to their difficult, dull and meaningless life.

Acting as a core preemptive measure, however, “support and supervision” can blunt the destructive effect of uselessness and humiliation which usually puts the idea of suicide in a person’s head. Humiliation plays an important role, especially when it is social, a condition which is more painful than belittlement within a family and can be caused by class discriminations and the absence of equal opportunities for everyone in society.

Iran to deal with the country from which downed Israeli drone took off

On Wednesday September 10, Afarinesh daily reported that the Islamic Consultative Assembly is to draft a bill that would punish the country that allowed an Israeli drone to take off on a foiled reconnaissance flight over Iran [August 23].

The vice-chairman of the chamber’s National Security and Foreign Relations Committee said that the committee might ask military commanders and other officials to appear before parliament to explain the incident.

“When enough information is collected about what has happened, we would debate the bill on parliament floor. If approved, the Islamic Consultative Assembly will pave the way for its implementation,” Mansour Haghighatpour, who represents the northwestern city of Ardebil in parliament said.

All we think about is winning

Ahead of a clash between Iran and Australia in the FIVB World Championships later Wednesday, the Serbian head coach of the Iranian national volleyball team said his players have produced a stellar performance in the games in Poland so far and should do their best to advance from the second stage of the games.

Iran is now placed in the same group as Slobodan Kovac’s home country: Serbia. For the first time he seems to want to see his home country lose in an international event. In an interview with Khabaronline’s reporter Mehri Ranjbar, Kovac further said:

“All we think about at this stage of the games is winning over Australia. We need to perform well and emerge victorious.

“Some [coaches and players] are merely fixated on advancing. I believe that is not a good idea. You need to perform well and win.

“We are trying to perform well, score points and make Iranians happy. Iran has now become a well-respected squad on everyone’s lips. Everyone knows our players by name. It couldn’t have been better.”

Iran resolute on enhanced ties with Kazakhstan: Rouhani

“The policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government is [based on] close interaction and relations with regional countries and particularly with neighboring states. Kazakhstan has a special position among them,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov in Astana on Tuesday.

He added that the annual value of exchanges between Tehran and Astana currently stands at one billion dollars which indicates that the two sides have so far failed to make proper use of bilateral capabilities to increase the figure.

He noted that the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries would lead to a great development in mutual ties and even in the region, saying Iran is determined to implement the deals.

On Tuesday, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his Iranian counterpart signed documents for cooperation in various fields.

“Undoubtedly, the expansion of cooperation in various sectors including transportation, the Caspian Sea, joint venture, industry and the environment is very important and I hope that joint cooperation will also be developed in the fields of culture, science and technology,” Rouhani said.

The Kazakh premier, for his part, said Astana is keen to increase trade exchanges with Iran, expressing hope that the Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway would pave the way for achieving this goal.

Massimov also hoped that negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program would lead to positive outcomes and sanctions against Tehran would be lifted.

The Iranian president wrapped up his official two-day visit to Astana on Wednesday after he held talks with senior Kazakh officials on the first leg of his five-day tour of the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

President Rouhani traveled to Tajikistan for a three-day visit on Wednesday, to participate at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
