European diplomats urge Iran-P5+1 deal by deadline

Zarif-Ashton-Kerry

A group of former and current European diplomats have called on P5+1 and Iran to intensify their efforts to reach a comprehensive nuclear deal by the November 24 deadline set by the six countries.

“Postponing the final tough decisions ahead is likely to provide more opportunities for those opposing the diplomatic track to spoil this process,” they said in a statement released on Wednesday.

“This is especially so when creative technical solutions have been formulated and a deal is within reach,” the statement further read, adding the deal should address potential international concerns about Iran’s nuclear energy program and should respect “Iranian legitimate aspirations and sovereignty.”

Praising an interim nuclear deal reached between Iran and P5+1 in November 2013, they said, “Europe must seize this moment to encourage the negotiating parties to address the outstanding areas through reasonable compromises while steering clear of issues that are not essential to a good deal.”

The statement was signed by the former foreign minister of Spain, Italy and Sweden, as well as Javier Solana, the former EU high representative for foreign and security policy; President and CEO of International Crisis Group Jean-Marie Guéhenno; Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag (a German legislative body) Norbert Röttgen; and Robert Cooper, a former UK diplomat.

“Europeans should also work with the US administration in reassuring skeptical regional allies of the long-term strategic benefits entailed in a final nuclear deal,” they said.

They also noted that the comprehensive deal will also “reshape the West’s engagement with Iran by opening new options for pursuing overlapping regional interests.”

Noting that the two sides are “closer than ever before to settling the nuclear file,” they said that the goals “of non-proliferation, global and regional security, de-escalation of burning conflicts in the Middle East and the demonstrative effect of successful multilateral diplomacy in these troubled times will all significantly benefit if a good deal is achieved.”

The diplomats also warned that the cost of “failed negotiations should also be borne in mind.”

The statement comes as Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are set to open a new round of discussions over the Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear work in Oman on November 11.

Iran censures terrorist attack against Shiite mourners in Saudi Arabia

Saudi-Ahsa-Attack
Saudi-Ahsa-Attack

Iran has strongly condemned a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia on a gathering of Shiite worshippers mourning the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the third Shiite Imam.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Tuesday denounced the assault in al-Ahsa, the largest governorate in Saudi Arabia’s restive Eastern Province, which killed five mourners and wounded 30 others on Monday.

She said Muslim and non-Muslim states have always respected the traditional Ashura ceremonies and provided security for the mourners.

Afkham called on the Saudi government to ensure security for people attending religious ceremonies and identify and punish the elements behind the terrorist attack in the country.

The attackers shot the victims with pistols and machine guns, the official Saudi Press Agency reported but provided no further details on the identities of the attackers or the victims.

According to the agency, an investigation into the deadly raid is underway.

The attack comes after a Saudi court on Monday handed down relatively long jail terms to three anti-regime activists as the kingdom continues its crackdown on dissent.

There have been numerous demonstrations in Saudi oil-rich Eastern Province since February 2011, with protesters calling for the release of political prisoners and an end to discrimination against minority Shiite Muslims. However, the government has responded with heavy-handed crackdown tactics.

In October 2012, Amnesty International called on Saudi authorities to stop using excessive force against the protesters.

Shia Muslims hold rituals to mark Karbala tragedy

Ashura
Ashura

The mourners take part in processions held in mosques and streets with different traditions to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s grandson Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his companions in Karbala.

Around 680 AD, Imam Hussein (PBUH) along with his 72 followers was massacred in the battle of Karbala in Iraq by the forces of the tyrant ruler of the time, Yazid, the second Umayyad caliph.

The mourning ceremonies reach their peak on the 9th day of Muharram, or Tasua, and the 10th day, or Ashura, when Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his companions were martyred.

Muharram ceremonies symbolize the eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity’s struggle against tyranny, the cause for which Imam Hussein (PBUH) was martyred.

Shia rituals and observances on Ashura consist primarily of public expressions of mourning and grief such as beating one’s chest as well as beating one’s back with light chains to remind the mourners of the pain and suffering of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his followers on that day.

Iranian people across the country traditionally cook and distribute charity food among their neighbors, family and the poor.

Ta’zieh is also among the rituals held in Iran during the Muharram mourning ceremonies. Ta’zieh, as an Iranian national and religious dramatic performance, recounts religious and historical events through poetry, recitation, music, songs and motion.

The traditional play narrates the story of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his companions in Karbala with its own specific style and rituals.

This Persian Passion Play was registered on the UNESCO list during the fifth session of the UN body’s Intergovernmental Committee in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2011.

The tragedy of Ashura leaves a permanent mark on the soul of any free and compassionate spirit, regardless of religion or race.

The 20th Exhibition of Press and News Agencies will open at Tehran’s Grand Musalla on November 8, 2014 with Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ali Jannati in attendance, the Islamic Republic News agency (IRNA) reported. The exhibition which runs through November 14 will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This year’s exhibition will play host to 560 media outlets of which 373 are private and another 183 belong to the public sector, said Hossein Entezami, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance in charge of the Press Department.

He went on to say that “Each day one of the newspapers will put out the daily bulletin and the coordination center for the exhibition will not play a role in that regard.”

The motto picked for the 2014 exhibition is “Responsible Freedom”. The deputy minister reiterated that the eleventh government has adopted “Press freedom should be exercised according to law” as one of its platforms, adding, “Naturally, the government is going down the path of press freedom. Media too have responsibilities to undertake when it comes to social questions. They should take heed of social issues and honor their commitments.”

A number of expert-level meetings will be held on the sidelines of this year’s event.

Germany welcomes environmental cooperation with Iran

Masoumeh Ebtekar

German’s ambassador to Tehran has signaled his country’s willingness to cooperate with Iran in managing environmental issues.

In a meeting with Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg, Masoumeh Ebtekar, vice-president and Director of the Department of Environment, called on Germany to provide Iran with the technology needed to manage its environmental issues.

Ebtekar pointed to environmental cooperation between Iran and Germany, notably participation in international meetings of peace and sustainable development, and said, “Iran welcomes exchanges of experience and bilateral cooperation. The [Iranian] government has a positive view of the environment; however, we face environmental crises, partially attributable to climatic changes and global warming,” Ebtekar added.

“Climatic change and temperatures exceeding global average have significantly reduced the volume of water reserves in Iran, and now the challenge of water shortage looms larger,” she told the German ambassador.

[…]

Ebtekar invited German experts and environmental activists to participate in International Environmental Exhibition to be held in Tehran in the winter.

[…]

Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg, for his part, expressed gratitude for the government’s measures under Mrs. Ebtekar’s stewardship to manage the environmental issues, and said that these measures would encourage Germany in cooperation with Iran. “Environmental activists in Germany are very keen on cooperating with Iran in saving Zagros and Hirakani forests and the biodiversity of these forests,” said the German ambassador.

“Germany welcomes cooperation with Iran in water issues, pollution and greenhouse gas control; Germany has great capacities in wind energy, renewable energies and can provide Iran with these services through UN initiatives and other international organizations,” he said.

Iran develops first nano air freshener

An Iranian scientist has developed a nano air freshener which neutralizes odors in the air without producing harmful gases such as butane and propane.

Reza Shakhs-Emampour, the developer of the herbal air freshener spray, told Mehr News, “These air fresheners do not pose a threat to people’s health since they are made of herbal extracts and have no chemical components.”

“In addition to freshening the air and neutralizing odors, the herbal air freshener can also disinfect surfaces and has no side effects on the skin,” he said.

Emampour stated that this product is the first of its kind and said, “It is the only type of air freshener produced with nanotechnology that has no adverse environmental or allergic effect.”

“It can be used in the car and on shoes,” he said, “since shoes are the most important factor in transmitting microorganisms into the house, this herbal air freshener can help prevent the spread.”

Iran condemns mass execution of Iraqi Sunnis by ISIL

isil-militants

Iran has in the strongest terms condemned the recent mass execution by ISIL terrorists of scores of Iraqi people from the Albu Nimr tribe in the western province of Anbar.

“The persistence of inhumane tragedies [committed] by Takfiri terrorists against followers of religions, ethnicities and minorities in different parts of Iraq and Syria is the result of certain countries’ support for terrorist groups, and bears proof to the futility of the [so-called] anti-ISIL coalition,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Saturday.

She underlined the need for countering Takfiri terrorism at its very roots and urged the international community’s sincere and responsible assistance for Iraq in its campaign against terrorism.

Afkham expressed hope that the Iraqi nation would emerge victorious in the fight against terrorism under the leadership of the Iraqi government and through national unity and cohesion.

On Thursday, the bodies of 150 members of the Albu Nimr tribe were found in a mass grave near Iraq’s western city of Ramadi with security officials saying that the terrorists seized the men on Wednesday night and then killed and buried them in an area near the city of Ramadi.

In a separate incident, sources said they found 70 bodies from the same tribe near the town of Hit in the province. Locals said the tribesmen were slain last week in an area controlled by ISIL north of the town.

Anbar Province, which borders war-ravaged Syria, has been a major stronghold of the ISIL elements and continues to be largely controlled by the terror group.

The ISIL terrorists have taken over large swathes of territory in Iraq. They have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations and crucifixions, against Iraqi communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, and others.
