Bank Melli to Begin Exchange Transfers for Iranian Expatriates

Gholam–Reza Panahi, the deputy governor for currency affairs at the Bank Melli of Iran (BMI), said that the bank is ready to receive foreign exchange transfers from Iranian expatriates through its foreign branches or subsidiaries.

It will also be able to provide services including: the opening of foreign currency accounts at the request of payment order holders, and disbursing appropriate foreign currency interest payments; the receipt of payment orders; the issuing of payment orders; the purchasing of payment order funds; transfers to third parties; the opening of letters of credit (LCs); and a variety of banking services across the country.

He commented that using BMI transfer channels would be a relief for customers, providing them with a secure way to transfer their funds while also allowing them to reduce banking expenses and benefit from various other banking services.

Iran seeks to boost regional ties with Russia: Leader’s aide

“Tehran and Moscow have common stance and viewpoints on the Syrian issue and regional issues are on the agenda of my talks with Russian officials,” Ali Akbar Velayati, the adviser on international affairs to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, told reporters in Moscow on Monday.

He added that Tehran and Moscow support the settlement of the Syrian crisis through political approaches.

Velayati said the two countries have always enjoyed “unique and strategic” relations and expanded mutual ties in different fields, particularly in nuclear and defense, as well as regional cooperation including a coalition among Iran, Syria, Russia and Iraq to fight terrorism.

The top Iranian official said during his stay in the Russian capital, he will also attend a seminar on bilateral cooperation in the modern geopolitical situation.

Velayati arrived in Moscow on Monday morning to hold talks with senior Russian officials on ways to strengthen relations. The visit comes at the invitation of Director of the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies Leonid Petrovich Reshetnikov.

He paid a visit to Moscow in January 2015 as a special envoy for Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, during which he submitted the Iranian president’s message to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

During Velayati’s meeting with President Putin, the two sides agreed on efforts to promote Iran’s status at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Iran, which has an observer status at the SCO, eyes membership in the organization.

They also discussed bilateral relations in political and economic fields.

Iran and Russia have similar stances on the crisis in Syria. Moscow and Tehran reject any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Syria, saying only Syrians are entitled to decide their fate.

JCPOA springboard for Iran progress: Salehi

Ali-Akbar Salehi said on Monday that Iran has entered a new phase in the international arena after the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“I envisage a promising future for the [Iranian] nation after [the implementation of] the JCPOA. The nation is standing on a springboard,” Salehi said.

Salehi made the remarks at a ceremony marking the 37th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution that put an end to the monarchy of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in the country.

On January 16, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany started to implement JCPOA they had concluded in July 2015.

After JCPOA went into effect, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the UN Security Council and the US were lifted. Iran, in return, has put some limitations on its nuclear activities.

The Iranian official said that Iran has managed to make significant progress in the international arena following the conclusion of the nuclear agreement, adding that the Iranian nation’s right to peaceful nuclear technology has been restored through the JCPOA.

Iran marks Islamic Revolution anniversary

On Monday, millions of Iranians across the country began celebrations marking the 37th anniversary of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution

Also known as the Ten-Days Dawn, the ceremonies mark the return from exile of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, and commemorate a chain of events that culminated in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Currently, a special ceremony is underway at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum in Tehran, with thousands of people in attendance.

Simultaneously, special ceremonies are being held in more than 80 Iranian cultural centers in 60 countries to mark the first day of the Ten-Day Dawn period.

Imam Khomeini spent more than 14 years in exile, mostly in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf. He also spent some time in Turkey and France, before his return to Iran.

On Saturday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei visited the mausoleum of the late Imam Khomeini to pay tribute to the architect of the Islamic Republic.

President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet ministers also paid tribute to Imam Khomeini at his mausoleum on Sunday. They were accompanied by the Imam’s grandson, Seyyed Hassan Khomeini.

Iran bans wheat imports: Agency

Agriculture officials have already said they foresaw no major wheat imports in the calendar year of 1395 because better rainfall so far is expected to boost domestic harvest.

“There is no need for wheat imports in 1395. Please avoid registering any order for wheat (imports) from this date,” Minister of Agriculture Mahmoud Hojjati said in a letter dated a week ago, Tasnim news agency reported Monday.

The letter addressed to Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh cited Iran’s state of the wheat inventory in the wake of a satisfactory harvest year and imports made so far.

In his letter, Hojjati said units which need to import pasta-making durum wheat must make their purchases from the Government Trading Company (GTC). Otherwise, they would have to use foreign exchange at free-market rates for their buys.

Iranian importers usually get foreign exchange at concessionary rates from the government for imports of basic commodities such as wheat, rice, raw sugar, crude vegetable oil and medicine.

GTC head Ali Qanbari has predicted guaranteed purchase of wheat from Iranian farmers to hit 10 million metric tons in 1395.

“We will have no wheat imports next year and given satisfactory precipitations in the month of fall, we can approach the point of self-sufficiency,” he said in November.

The Iranian government bought more than 8 million metric tons of wheat from local farmers in the crop season of the current Iranian year. It planned to export 300,000 metric tons of durum wheat, Qanbari has said.

European traders have said Iran’s state grains agency offered to barter locally-produced durum wheat with 250,000 tons of milling wheat.

Earlier this year, the government imposed import duties on wheat and barley to protect local farmers from cheap imports and to prevent imported grain being re-sold to the government at higher prices.

Iran provides € 20m. credit line for exports to Russia

Talking to reporters on Monday, he said Russian companies are currently keen for imports from Iran especially foodstuff, making it necessary for providing banking facilities to this end.

He said there are no problems on opening of LC credit lines with Russian banks.

He said Iran has already talked to Russian banks in this connection.

The official further noted that a total of dlrs 2.5 billion credit lines has been opened by his bank in the past nine months while the figure stood at dlrs 700 million during the same period last year.

Commenting on Iran-Turkmenistan banking relations, he said Iran imported between two and three billion dollars worth of gas from Turkmenistan.

Lifting sanctions provides good opportunity to conserve wetlands

Referring to the World Wetlands Day on February 2, Michael Morse said that strong cooperation exists between international institutes and the private sector to conserve wetlands in Iran.

Regarding the establishment of Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, Iran has been successful in conserving wetlands in both the region and in the world, he said.

Due to rapid climate change, it is essential to increase the remaining developmental projects in other wetlands, Morse said.

Referring to Iranian wetlands as world treasures, he added that special international attentions must be paid in this regard.

Iran Inks Deal with ATR to Buy 20 Planes

Managing Director of Iran Air Farhad Parvaresh told the Tasnim News Agency that the contract was hammered out in Tehran.

The planes can accommodate 70 passengers and will be flown in short routes, he explained.

According to the contract, Iran Air will receive 2 to 4 planes in 2016, Parvaresh added.

The business talks for the purchase of the turboprops built by ATR, a joint venture of Airbus and Finmeccanica of Italy, were held during Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his economic delegation’s recent visit to Rome.

The deal follows a contract between Iran and Airbus on a major order, which includes dozens of Airbus’s biggest-selling jets.

Iran has agreed to buy 118 Airbus jets, including 45 A320 single-aisle aircraft, 45 A330 wide-bodies, 16 A350 twin-aisle aircraft, and 12 A380’s.

Speaker Praises IRGC Navy for Timely Action against US Sailors

In their operation against the “intruding pirates”, the IRGC Navy forces took an appropriate and timely action and displayed the force’s power and might, Ali Larijani said at an open session of the parliament on Monday.

The IRGC Navy proved that it remains to be the country’s sharp eyes in safeguarding the water borders, he underlined.

On January 12, the IRGC Navy captured 10 US Navy sailors who had trespassed into Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.

One day later, the IRGC Public Relations in a statement said the sailors were freed following an apology from the US and after technical and operational investigations indicated that the intrusion into Iranian territorial waters was “unintentional”.

On Sunday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei awarded the ‘Medal of Fath (Conquest)’ to IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi and four other IRGC commanders who made the “courageous and timely” move to capture the American boats and sailors near Iran’s Farsi Island.
