Iranian Cheetah Is Not Alone!

Iranian-cheetah2

Many environmental activists and campaigners worried about the extinction of Iranian cheetah have adopted the motto “Iranian cheetah is not alone”. This dictum, however, can also be construed in a different way: Iranian cheetah is not the only endangered species threatened with extinction in Iran. Unfortunately, when it comes to the animals on the brink of extinction, there is a long list to go down.

Here is IFP‘s translation of a report by Vaghaye Ettefaghieh daily newspaper:

Iranian Cheetah is Not Alone!

Majid Kharrazian Moqaddam, the head of wildlife office at the Department of Environment, said, “Despite the considerable, rich diversity of species in our country, it is regrettable to note that about 76 species of animal classes in our country are on the red list of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).”

“Species like Persian lion and Mazandaran tiger have been wiped out in less than half a century,” he regretted, warning that, “This can be interpreted as an advance warning for the extinction of species like Persian onager, Asian black bear, Iranian cheetah, and Persian fallow deer in the near future.”

Moqaddam stressed that 19 types of mammals, 25 birds, 16 reptiles, 4 amphibians and 10 species of domestic water fish are inscribed on the IUCN Red List as species on the verge of extinction.

Threat of Human Activities for Wild Habitats

Moqaddam pointed to the fact that the interrelation between wildlife habitats has been cut off and referred to it as the main reason behind the long list of endangered species.

“In fact, the development of roads, settlements and agricultural fields have cut off the animals’ access to the surrounding species population, and thus led to inbreeding and local extinction,” he said, adding that in the long term such species will face a reduction in genetic diversity and low resistance to diseases and climate changes.

Moqaddam further pointed to such factors as unauthorized weapons, overpopulation of habitats and illegal trade of animal species and their components as other drivers of wildlife decline.

He said, “In the meantime, the lack of facilities, equipment and taskforce for protection of species are also wreaking havoc. There are not appropriate laws and regulations.”

In addition to human activities and appetite, Moghaddam laid emphasis on the role that natural factors play in the extinction of species and said, “The prevalence of diseases, continuous droughts and many others are noteworthy.”

Two Thirds of Wildlife Could Be Extinct by 2020

Thanks to the attempts made by environmentalists, hopes are getting higher to save Iranian cheetah from extinction. However, Iranian cheetah, though rare, is not the only endangered species on the brink of extinction. There are several other animals that will go extinct and be wiped out off the planet anytime soon if we don’t secure them.

It seems that Iran is not the only country with endangered species. A grim study released by Zoological Society of London (ZSL) indicates that stocks of global wildlife could plunge two-thirds by 2020. According to ZSL, animals’ population has dropped by 58% from 1970 to 2012 and on current trends it will hit 67% by 2020.

Researchers of ZSL referred to rampant hunting and air pollution as the reasons for extinction of species living sporadically in mountains and seas. Elephants and gorillas are the most threatened.

The study noted that the ultimate cause of extinction of animals is construction and agriculture in the wildlife habitats. Humans have occupied most of the earth and only 15% of it is conserved. A researcher from the study warned, “This will jeopardize the natural resources that humans are dependent on, cause water shortage and increase the competition over natural resources.”

Iran urges global action against Israeli crimes

Gholam-Hossein Dehqani

Addressing a session of the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Gholam-Hossein Dehqani warned about Israel’s growing use of violence against Palestinians as well as a dire humanitarian situation in the occupied territories.

Dehqani expressed Iran’s deep concern over a crippling Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip, saying the “illegal land and sea blockade… must be lifted and all crossing points must be opened promptly and unconditionally.”

The blockade, which was imposed against Gaza on 2007, has caused a decline in the standards of living as well as unprecedented levels of unemployment and unrelenting poverty.

Dehqani further called for an immediate end to the Israeli regime’s illegal settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, detention of the Palestinian people and demolition of their homes.

“These practices clearly violate a range of human rights” and amount to “war crime in accordance with international humanitarian law,” he said.

The Iranian diplomat further reiterated the Islamic Republic’s “unwavering and full support for the Palestinian people in their rightful and legitimate struggle against the occupation and for their just quest for exercise of their right to self-determination.”

He said that Tel Aviv’s measures in East Jerusalem al-Quds and the occupied Golan Heights are in violation of the international laws.

Dehqani said that the Golan Heights is an “integral part” of Syria and the international community must pressure Tel Aviv to withdraw its troops from the strategic region.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria after the 1967 Six-Day War and later occupied it in a move that has never been recognized by the international community.

The regime has built tens of illegal settlements in the area ever since and has used the region to carry out a number of military operations against the Syrian government.

Iran’s Parliament Bans Carrying, Selling, Making Cold Weapons

Cold Weapons

According to a report by ICANA, as translated by IFP, the majority of Iranian lawmakers, in an open session on Wednesday morning, voted for a law that bans carrying, making, and selling various types of cold weapons.

Based on the law, it is a crime to carry cold weapons including Qama, sword, switchblade, cleaver, machete, brass knuckles, and other tools only used in physical conflicts and for harming other people.

Anyone who carries, imports and sells these weapons will also be fined, and the tools will be confiscated.

If anyone wants to possess such tools for sports activities, performances, training, self-defence, or need them for his or her job should obtain a licence, the law says.

During the session, Brigadier General Abbas-Ali Mohammadian, the chief of Tehran’s Criminal Police, stated that 60 per cent of murders during the past six months have been committed using cold weapons.

We Don’t Want War With Turkey But Are Ready for It if They Want: Iraq

Ebadi

On Tuesday, Turkish military sources announced that a convoy of around 30 tanks and artillery has been deployed to the country’s southeastern town of Silopi, located on the border with Iraq.

Turkey’s Defense Minister Fikri Isik said the measures were part of Ankara’s preparation for “important developments in the region.”

“Turkey is preparing in advance for whatever happens (and) this is one element of that,” he noted.

Photos provided by the sources showed a long column of vehicles, including tanks, tank rescue vehicles, and construction vehicles in single file on a dual carriageway.

Following the remarks, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi warned Ankara over provoking confrontation with Baghdad.

The latest developments are part of a dispute between Iraq and Turkey in which Ankara insists on taking part in the battle to liberate Mosul from ISIS, while Baghdad rejects the need for its help.

We Don’t Want War With Turkey But Are Ready for It if They Want: Iraq

Latest on the Battle for Mosul

Meanwhile, members of the Iraqi army’s elite forces, the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), have recaptured a village and a television station in Mosul’s eastern district, in their latest push to liberate the northern city from the grip of ISIS terrorists.

Earlier, Iraqi special forces advanced towards the more urban center of Mosul after entering the outskirts of the city in a bid to retake it from the Takfiri terrorists.

More than two weeks ago, the Iraqi army, volunteer Shia and Sunni fighters as well as Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched a long-awaited operation to wrest control of Mosul, the last stronghold of ISIS in the Arab country. Since then, the Iraqi forces have been advancing on the city on multiple fronts.

Dire Consequences of Turkey’s Claim on Mosul

Erdogan

“Dancing with death in Mosul”, “Erdogan’s dizziness in the Middle East equation” and “reopening old wounds by the fantasy of the Ottoman Empire”; these are part of the remarks made by a number of Iranian MPs about Turkey’s paradoxical behaviour in dealing with Takfiri [extremist] terrorism.

Here’s IFP’s translation of a report by ICANA about the comments made by a number of Iranian MPs on Turkey’s recent claims over Iraqi and Syrian territories.

Ankara has announced that it has the right to interfere militarily in Iraq under the pretext of fighting Kurdish opposition group PKK. However, Rai al-Youm newspaper recently released a report about a “new map” published by Turkey’s governmental media that shows an expansion in Turkey’s borders to the northern Syria from Aleppo to Kirkuk. The new map also includes the city of Mosul and some Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.

The publication of the new map coincides with Erdogan’s speech where he deemed it necessary to change the Treaty of Lausanne. This treaty, signed on July 24, 1923, recognized the current borders of Turkey. Add to this the deployment of around 2,000 Turkish forces in Bashiqa base near Mosul which all indicate Erdogan’s desire to expand its borders around Mosul.

Seyyed Mohammad Javad AbtahiIranian Parliament member, Seyyed Mohammad Javad Abtahi pointed to the formation of ISIS and Turkey’s recent actions and said, “The US had plans to create a country from Mosul to Aleppo; however, their plot began to fall apart thanks to the achievements of Syrian and Iraqi armies, Popular Mobilization Forces and the Russia–Syria–Iran–Iraq coalition.”

He added that Americans claim their share of Mosul operation because Washington, with the aid of Saudis’ media outlets, has shown a strong inclination to introduce itself as the saviour of Iraq, especially to the Sunni Muslims.

Abtahi appreciated the attempts made by Iraqi Prime Minister to preserve the territorial integrity of his country and said, “The ideology of reviving the decaying Ottoman Empire will breed undesired consequences.”

“Raising the claim that Mosul historically belongs to Turkey is pretty dangerous and can create new tensions between the countries in the Middle East,” Abtahi warned.

He stressed that Mosul operation progressed faster than expectations and noted, “Saudi media try to question the achievements of Mosul operation; however, the point is that Baghdad never carries out military operations on an impulse.”

Javad Karimi QoddousiJavad Karimi Qoddousi, another Iranian parliamentarian, said that Turkey seems to be puzzled by the Middle East equations; its behaviour is mingled with paradox and lacks a clear strategy.

“Ankara used to take steps circumspectly but today, it has become an impulsive Turkey making rash decisions,” he added.

Jahanbakhsh MohebbiniaAnother MP Jahanbakhsh Mohebbinia, on the other hand, said that the fantasy of reviving the Ottoman Empire has wasted a colossal amount of Turkey’s social, financial and security assets.

“Ankara’s violation of Iraq’s territorial integrity is actually playing with fire and its flames will blow back to Turkey’s face,” he stressed.

Gholam-Ali JafarzadehLawmaker Gholam-Ali Jafarzadeh referred to Ankara’s interactions with and its aids to ISIS and noted, “Turkey is now paying the price by grappling with terrorist operations and insecurity within its borders.”

Jafarzadeh stressed that Ankara is actually reopening old wounds by claiming that Mosul historically belongs to Turkey.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has never had any intentions for seizing other countries’ resources and it has always worked as a surgeon trying to remove the cancerous ISIS,” he said.

Rouhani’s Picks for 3 Ministries Win Lawmakers’ Confidence Vote

ministers

After extensive debates during two Parliament  sessions on Tuesday, Rouhani’s picks for the three ministries obtained the green light from the Iranian lawmakers.

At the end of the evening session, Reza Salehi Amiri, the proposed nominee for the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, received the vote of confidence with 180 Iranian lawmakers in favor, 89 against and six abstentions.

This as 193 lawmakers also gave their approval to Massoud Soltanifar, as the president’s pick for the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. Some 72 lawmakers opposed him and nine abstained.

Fakhroddin Ahmadi Danesh Ashtiani also won a yes from 157 legislators, while 111 were against him and six abstained, to become the new minister of education.

Soltanifar is the current vice president and the head of the Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran; Salehi Amiri is the current head of the National Library and Archives Organization of Iran; and Danesh Ashtiani is a university professor.

In a letter to Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani on October 23, the president had introduced the candidates for the three vacant ministerial portfolios for votes of confidence.

The president’s move came after the resignation of Ali Jannati, Mahmoud Goudarzi, and Ali Asghar Fani as the ministers of culture and Islamic guidance, sports and youth affairs, and education, respectively, last week.

According to a report covered by Al Alam News Website, Badr Organization’s brief statement mentioned that “our forces managed to liberate the villages of lower al-Gorn, upper al-Gorn, al-Amrini, al-Salmani and al-Zarka, located west of the city Mosul, from ISIS control.”

“ISIS fighters retreated due to the advance of our liberation security forces,” the statement added.

Earlier today, the Badr Organization announced that 23 families who were held hostage by ISIS as human shields were freed in the village of al-Gorn from captivity.

Iran, Austria Discuss Closer Consular Cooperation

Iran-Austria

The second joint meeting of Iran and Austria on consular cooperation was held in Tehran on Sunday and Monday with Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Director-General for Consular Affairs Ali Chegini and his Austrian counterpart, Elisabeth Felsberg, in attendance.

The two diplomats also discussed ways to promote bilateral relations between Iran and Austria in other spheres, including tourism, economy and police cooperation.

They further exchanged views about joint efforts to prevent illegal immigration.

At the end of the meeting, Chegini and Felsberg signed a document on deepening consular cooperation between Iran and Austria.
