Hague: US Forces May Have Committed War Crimes

Hague

In a report covered by Iran’s Ettela’at newspaper, The Hague prosecutors said there was a “reasonable basis to believe” that US forces had tortured prisoners in Afghanistan and at Central Intelligence Agency detention facilities elsewhere in 2003 and 2004.

“Members of US armed forces appear to have subjected at least 61 detained persons to torture,” the prosecutors’ office, wrote. It added that CIA officials appeared to have tortured another 27 detainees.

The prosecutors’ office said it would decide imminently whether to pursue a full investigation.

The results of a full investigation could potentially lead to charges being brought against individuals and the issuing of an arrest warrant. The ICC is a court of last resort, however, meaning it could only bring charges if domestic authorities were not dealing adequately with allegations.

Monday’s finding marks a significant step forward in the court’s decade-old examination of conflicts in Afghanistan and could draw a sharp response from a U.S. administration that is set to become less internationalist under President-elect Donald Trump.

“These alleged crimes were not the abuses of a few isolated individuals,” the report said. “They appear to have been committed as part of approved interrogation techniques in an attempt to extract ‘actionable intelligence.'”

No Change in US Support for Israel during Trump Presidency: Bangash

zafar-bangash

“For decades Muslims outside the United States were being terrorized and killed and now they’re going to target you in the US; so, you are just now going to be like the rest of the Muslims,” Zafar Bangash said in an interview with the Tasnim News Agency.

Zafar Bangash is a noted Islamic movement journalist and commentator in Toronto, Canada. He is Director of the Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought, and president of the Islamic Society of York Region, a suburb of Toronto.

Tasnim: About the current development in the world, do you think that Mr. Trump’s election would have direct impact on Muslims in the world or the interactions between the US and Muslims?

Bangash: Yes of course; it will. It’s not going to remain unaffected, but I think we need to look at this issue in a larger context as to why Trump was elected. It in fact indicates a deep dissatisfaction with the Western system as it exists today. And in fact it is a rejection of the American establishment by the American people; and the Americans did not effort so much for Trump as they (made) efforts against Hillary Clinton.

Tasnim: Would it be positive for Muslims in the world?

Bangash: Well I think in some areas perhaps yes. I would say that his election probably would have a positive effect on let’s say the war on Syria, because both he and his security advisor General Michael Flynn, have already said that they need to revisit this issue because America really has to think its policy as to why it is supporting Daesh and, you know, the so-called moderate rebels that it’s talking about, as to whether they’re really moderate or are they even worse than these terrorists over there. And Michael Flynn himself has said that, you know, this is a strange policy that we are pursuing, that we have wars in so many different countries and we don’t know when these wars are going to end. So, it is basically draining their economy, and they’re concerned about it.

Tasnim: And what about Muslim community, I mean in US, in Canada or those who want to travel to US?

Bangash: It is definitely going to have a very very negative impact on them, particularly Muslims that are living in the US and Muslims that plan to travel to the US, because Trump has made it absolutely clear that he is going to investigate all the Muslims; already attacks on Muslims have increased since his election and even on others, on African Americans. That definitely is going to have a negative impact, for sure. Also the people that he has around him, people that he has so far indicated that he is going to appoint, whether it is John Bolton, or Rudy Giuliani or Newt Gingrich—these are very very nasty people, and they are going to pursue very nasty policies. You know, I’ve been talking to Muslims and I said “look! For decades Muslims outside the United States were being terrorized and killed and now they’re going to target you in the US; so, you are just now going to be like the rest of the Muslims.”

Zafar Bangash

Tasnim: Do you expect another war against a Muslim state or not?

Bangash: I don’t think that he’s going to pursue wars outside. I don’t think so. If he sticks to whatever he has said – that you know he wants to build America’s infrastructure, build roads and bridges etc., because America is collapsing; In fact, about two weeks ago, Jeffrey Sachs, one of the well-known American economists, wrote an article – I think it as in the in the Nation magazine- in which he pointed out that the amount of money that the United States has spent on wars and achieved very little out of that,  if even one fifth or one tenth of that was spent on building infrastructure – on health, on education- America would have made a lot more progress. So, it indicates that even Donald Trump sees that and he has constantly said that he wants to build America’s infrastructure. I think if he does that, then, the war-mongers in the US would not be able to pursue their wars of aggression in the Muslim world. I really don’t see Trump pursuing as many wars abroad as let’s say Obama did, or George Bush did. He’s more likely to concentrate internally on enabling America.

Tasnim: And in the long run that will not change? But some argue that after some focus on domestic issues, he may change course and shift to foreign interventions?

Bangash: I doubt it very much, because given his temperament – he is a businessman- I think the only area where he’s not going to change anything is support to Israel. You know, that will continue because, of course, the Zionist lobby is very powerful. I mean, you know, Trump himself, his daughter is married to a Jew, so we know that he has family links as well with them. I think there will be no change in that area but the fact that he has said that he wants to work with Russia, that he wants to work with China, previously he was saying that he was going to, you know, take care of China, because it was undermining US economy, but now he is saying that he wants to be a partner with China. So, I think in that area, I don’t think that he’s going to be waging wars. I think if he sort of makes up with Russia– because Russia is now coming up very very aggressively, it’s coming after the demise of the Soviet Union; Under [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, Russia is emerging and I think economically, the center of gravity has shifted from the West, it is now coming to this region, West Asia, and Central Asia. The Silk Road Project, and you know Euro-Asia, etc. This is now going to be the next sort of engine of development in the world, and I don’t think that America can achieve anything by sort of waging wars.

Leader: Iran Unimpressed by US Election Results

leader

“Unlike some of those in the world who have either been mourning or celebrating the results of the American elections, we are neither mourning nor celebrating and the results make no difference to us,” he said in Tehran on Wednesday.

“We have no worries and by the grace of God, we are ready to face any possible eventuality,” the Leader told a group of visitors from the central Iranian city of Isfahan.

Ayatollah Khamenei said both parties in the US elections follow the hostile policy which Washington has adopted against the Islamic Republic since 1979.

“We have no judgment about this election because America is the same America and each of the two parties which have been at work over the past 37 years has done no good to us, rather it is their evil which has always targeted the Iranian nation.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said the elections, which marked an unflattering portrayal of the US situation including poverty and many other problems by President-elect Donald Trump, revealed the realities of the American society.

“The person who was elected as the US president said during the election campaign that the American money spent on wars in the past few years could have rebuilt America twice if it had been used inside the county,” the Leader said.

“America in recent years has spent its tax money on despicable wars which have resulted in the massacre of tens of thousands of civilians and destruction of infrastructure in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Iran to Unveil Homegrown Copter, Tank

General Hossein Dehghan

The Defense Ministry has plans to unveil ‘Saba-248’ helicopter and ‘Karrar’ advanced homegrown tank, General Dehqan told reporters on Wednesday, during a visit to the 8th International Iran Airshow, on the Persian Gulf island of Kish.

According to the minister, the products have been fully designed and manufactured by the local military experts, in cooperation with the Iranian private sector’s knowledge-based enterprises.

Karrar is a class of Iranian tanks that enjoys modern technologies. Its earlier version is already in service, together with other locally-made tanks like Zolfaqar.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

China Threatens to Cut iPhone Sales If Trump Declares Trade War

According to a report covered by Iran’s Shargh Newspaper, China’s state-run newspaper says the government would respond with “countermeasures” if US President-elect Donald Trump starts a trade war against the country, warning that the sales of iPhones and US cars would suffer a “setback.”

In an editorial, the Global Times said it would be “naive” for Trump to follow through on his campaign promises to implement a 45 percent tariff on Chinese exports to the US and to declare the country a currency manipulator.

Trump repeatedly targeted China during his presidential campaign, vowing to take a tougher stance on trade in the hopes of reviving manufacturing in the US. In its editorial, the Global Times dismissed the notion that Trump alone could implement a 45 percent tariff on Chinese exports, though it warned that any protectionist measure could leave trade “paralyzed.”

“China will take a tit-for-tat approach then,” the editorial reads. “A batch of Boeing orders will be replaced by Airbus. US auto and iPhone sales in China will suffer a setback, and US soybean and maize imports will be halted. China can also limit the number of Chinese students studying in the US.”

Muslims Converge on Karbala for Mourning Procession

Arbaeen-2016

Tens of thousands from Iraq, Pakistan, India, Iran, Bahrain, Lebanon, Azerbaijan and Turkey on Wednesday were trekking a key road between Najaf – another holy city in Iraq – and Karbala on foot in a sign of devotion.

The occasion, known as Arba’een, has invariably served a driving force for Muslim unity in the face of attempts to create divergence, animosity, and misunderstanding.

Each year, followers of other religious groups such as Christians and Sunni Muslims join the journey to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, a grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the third Imam of Shia Muslims.

The occasion has found additional significance in recent years as it become a rallying cry for the campaign against Takfiri terrorists who have frequently targeted the pilgrims.

On Monday, Daesh terrorists targeted the pilgrims in Karbala and security forces in Fallujah, another central city, killing at least six people in each attack.

After the election of Donald Trump as the US president, many observers are worried that the GOP president-elect would keep his promise and scrap the nuclear deal with Iran. Many newspapers today covered the European foreign ministers’ vow to remain committed to the deal and also the warnings against Trump’s possible move.

They also covered the football match between Iran and Syria, which was held in a swamp-like stadium in Malaysia as the Arab country cannot be a host due to security conditions.

The air pollution in Tehran and other Iranian megacities also remained a top story today.

Iran Art Exhibition Uses Culture to Bridge Middle East Divides

Art Exhibition

The Land of the Solidities, an abstract oil painting of a fully veiled Arab woman by Mounirah Mosly, a Saudi artist, hangs near an untiled piece by the late Sohrab Sepehri, one of Iran’s best known poets and painters, Financial Times reported.

The fact that the works are displayed at the same exhibition in Tehran provides a rare show of bonhomie in a region blighted by conflict and bitter rivalries. For Iran the event is unique — it is the first time that the predominantly Persian state has hosted such a public display of Arab art.

Art Exhibition

The organisers touted it as an opportunity to use culture to bridge some of the regional divides, and it is notable that two works from Saudi Arabia are on the display.

Karim Sultan, curator at the Sharjah-based Barjeel Art Foundation that put on The Sea Suspended exhibition, says the exhibition is about “continuing the conversation with the Arab world.”

Ehsan Rasoulof, the director of Mohsen Gallery, one of Iran’s avant-garde art galleries, concurs, saying art should transcend the Middle East’s problems.

“In this crisis-hit region where we live, an art dialogue is the responsibility of artists, despite all the tensions between us and our neighbours,” Mr Rasoulof says.

Art ExhibitionSaudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties and halted flights to and from Iran on January 3 following attacks on vacant Saudi diplomatic premises in the Iranian capital and the city of Mashhad by angry people protesting Riyadh’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr.

In the volatile environment, Sadeq Kharrazi, a renowned Iranian art collector and a former ambassador to the UN and France, says culture can be a tool of diplomacy.

The exhibition — held at the state-run Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art — was “a step forward for helping make people in the region closer to each other,” he says.

“Tensions should decrease and artists are well-positioned to fill the gap between people in the region and politicians,” he adds.

Art Exhibition

The exhibition includes 40 paintings covering a period from the 1940s to 1990s by Arab artists from countries including Egypt, Morocco, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Algeria. There are an equal number of Iranian pieces on display.

The theme of the exhibition reflects on the emergence of abstract Arab art and the artists’ experiences of everyday life.

It is being held at a time when President Hassan Rouhani’s government is seeking to repair the nation’s image and re-engage with the world following its landmark nuclear agreement last year that saw many western sanctions on the Islamic Republic lifted.

Assad: Trump Is Syria’s Natural Ally If He Keeps His Promises

assad-trump

“We cannot tell anything about what he’s going to do, but if… he is going to fight the terrorists, of course we are going to be allies, natural ally in that regard with the Russians, with the Iranians, with many other countries,” said Assad, as reported by RTP and covered by Fars.

He also said that he would welcome a notion made by Trump while campaigning that the US should be more focused on battling the ISIS terrorist group. “I would say this is promising, but can he deliver? … Can he go in that regard? What about the countervailing forces within the administration, the mainstream media that were against him? How can he deal with it?” he added.

He noted that such forces are the reason that Syria is still dubious on whether Trump will be able to live up to his vows. “That’s why we are very cautious in judging him, especially as he wasn’t in a political position before,” he added.

Iran Warns US after House Moves to Renew Sanctions

shamkhani

US lawmakers voted 419 to one for a 10-year reauthorization of the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), which was initially adopted in 1996 on the unfounded ground that Tehran was pursuing a non-civilian nuclear program.

The ISA will expire at the end of 2016 if it is not renewed and the bill must be passed by the Senate before being signed by the US president into law.

Iranian officials warned the US against renewing the ban in light of the fact that Iran has had the sanctions lifted on the back of its 2015 nuclear accord with world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani addressed US officials on Tuesday night in a strident tone.

“If you extend the sanctions, this will mean kicking the JCPOA away and we will confront it through implementing powerful technical packages,” he said, without elaboration.

The agreement was struck in July 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 group comprising the US, France, China, Britain, Russia and Germany.

Addressing the pro-Israeli lobby group AIPAC back in March, US President-elect Donald Trump declared that his “number-one priority” would be to “dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran.”

Back in July, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said, “We will not violate the JCPOA, but if the opposite side violates it – as US presidential candidates are currently threatening to tear up the JCPOA – if they tear up the JCPOA, we will burn it.”

Trump, himself, has conceded that it would be hard to destroy a deal enshrined in a United Nations resolution. In August 2015, he said he would not “rip up” the nuclear deal, but that he would “police that contract so tough they don’t have a chance.”

Shamkahni said, “The Iranian nation is an independence-seeking one. They (US leaders) cannot sit in glass palaces saying they would [either] tear up the JCPOA or renegotiate it.”

Yahya Rahim Safavi, a top military adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, also said if Washington annulled the JCPOA at Israel’s behest it would cost it dearly.

Iran Warns US after House Moves to Renew Sanctions

“Whoever becomes the president in the US, he will have to support the Zionists, but annulling the JCPOA will be a strategic mistake. If Trump seeks to annul the JCPOA, this will cost the US dearly,” he said.
