The 59th Annual Grammy Awards were held at Staples Center in Los Angele on Sunday.

The multinational band, led by fêted French-born Chinese-American cellist Yo-Yo Ma, serves to intermingle world’s sundry musical styles as a means of sending across an eclectic and intertwined cultural message. Yo-Yo Ma is touted as one of the century’s greatest cellists.

The band won the accolade for its “Sing Me Home” album. The ensemble’s website calls the work a “tribute to the ways culture can help us encounter, connect, and build something new.”

Iranian Maestro Kalhor on Grammy-Winning Ensemble

On the ensemble, Iranian maestro Keyvan Kalhor plays Kamancheh, an Iranian traditional stringed instrument. He is known as Iran’s “most international” artist.

He has invested much effort in acquainting foreigners with the Iranian music and is the only Iranian musician to have been nominated to receive a Grammy Award four times.

His musical mastership has adorned the score for Youth Without Youth, a 2007 fantasy drama film written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

“Musicians, music experts, and musicologists should be au fait with mathematics, history, and literature,” has said Kalhor, in words that echo the profundity of his musical expertise.

Iran May Stop Cooperation with IAEA If US Leaks Secret Nuclear Documents

A number of Iranian parliamentarians have commented on the US President Donald Trump’s threat of publicizing the secret nuclear documents between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), saying such threats may lead to Iran’s decision to stop cooperation with the Agency.

Old Trick

Jamali NobandeganiThe Iranian lawmaker Mohammad-Javad Jamali Nobandegani says Tehran may stop its cooperation with the IAEA in case the secret nuclear documents become public, according to a Farsi report by ICANA.

Referring to Trump’s threat to disclose Iran’s secret documents pertaining to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Jamali Nobandegani, who is also a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said threatening Tehran with claims about publicizing such [secret nuclear] documents is an old trick.

“Most of the so-called IAEA agents who are dispatched to other countries [for inspecting nuclear facilities and activities] are, in fact, undercover agents of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Mossad — Israel’s intelligence agency. In the past, prior to the raising of the nuclear issue by the IAEA, American and European media published Iran’s documents.”

“Since the IAEA’s director general is appointed by the direct vote of the US and other Western countries, he does not have the freedom and authority to make independent decisions and, thus, fails to guarantee the fulfilment of the Agency’s commitments,” he went on to say.

Referring to the leak of the secret documents between Iran and IAEA in the past, Jamali Nobandegani stressed that in case of another disclosure [of such documents], the international community will eventually notice the IAEA’s lack of commitment, understand the reason behind Iran’s reluctance to cooperate with the agency and respect the country’s decision.

Therefore, in case Trump carries out its threat of publishing the documents, the Iranian government will definitely take necessary measures to reciprocate.

Among Iran’s measure may be suspending cooperation with the IAEA, as these documents are directly related to the country’s national security and a nation’s security is not negotiable and tradable.

Trump’s Political Game

Valiollah NanvakenariCommenting on the same issue, Valiollah Nanvakenari, another Iranian parliamentarian, said Tehran has nothing to hide with regard to its peaceful nuclear programme, adding threats about the leak of the country’s secret information is part of Trump’s political game.

Trump is not seeking to divulge any secret or reveal any truth; his efforts are merely aimed at influencing the international community’s attitude towards Iran in a negative way, he noted.

“The US is a domineering state in nature and, thus, all of its measures and moves are excuses for achieving full domination over the world. Iranians gave a strong response to the US government’s prattle by taking part in February 10 rallies to mark the 38th anniversary of the victory of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.”

“Iran has cooperated honestly with the IAEA with regard to its [peaceful] nuclear programme and has nothing to hide. Nevertheless, by signing the JCPOA, Tehran and the Agency made a number of commitments, the former to permit the agency to inspect its nuclear facilities and the latter to keep Iran’s information secret.”

The probable disclosure of Iran’s secret information by the IAEA would definitely be interpreted as a lack of commitment by Tehran, he stressed.

“Iran has always honoured the commitments it has made in talks with the P5+1 and the IAEA. However, the other side has always shown a lack of commitment.”

The Iranian lawmaker added although Iran has no secret information to hide and has proved the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme to the international community, it expects the IAEA to meet its commitments in this regard.

Nanvakenari stressed that Trump’s new political game is only aimed at promoting Iranophobia in the international community.

Leak of Confidential Documents Harms IAEA

BroujerdiChairman of the Iranian Parliament’s Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi also noted any move by Trump to leak confidential documents on the nuclear deal would be harmful to the UN nuclear agency and not Iran.

“If Trump wants to publish confidential documents between Iran and the IAEA, it will in fact constitute a violation of the Agency’s obligations, because the Agency has been committed not to make Iran’s confidential nuclear information and documents available to any country, including the US,” he noted.

He added that such a move by the US would pose challenges to the IAEA as an international body, Press TV reported.

Boroujerdi said the IAEA had promised to allow no information leak about the JCPOA, but Iran welcomes the release of any confidential document, because it will reaffirm the Islamic Republic’s rightfulness and commitment.

Notwithstanding, in case of a move by the US to leak any documents, the IAEA must be accountable to Iran over lack of commitment to its obligations, the legislator pointed out.

“I do not think that the agency would want to cross the redlines set and endorsed by its member countries,” he said.

During the US election campaign, reports circulated indicating that Trump would reveal certain documents on Iran’s nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), allegedly kept hidden by Obama administration.

An article carried by the Daily Beast website late last December quoted an “individual who has participated in those conversations” as saying that “senior officials who will be part of the Trump administration are already discussing what so-far-unseen information about the Iran agreement they will be able to make public after January.”

According to a Farsi report by Khabar Online, Bernard Cambier, a senior vice-president of Renault Group, declared that the French company regards Iran as an important base for the development of its trade.

“Last year, our products sold well in Iran thanks to our partners,” he noted, pointing that 37% of Renault sales have been made in Africa, India and the Middle East.

“We attach great importance to the quality of our products and after-sale services. Our clients have a decisive influence over it.”

“We are still unaware of our clients’ demands in Iran,” he stressed, noting that the Renault Group has made plans to increase its Iranian customers’ satisfaction, which lies in a minimized time of service offering and clearly determined prices.

“To meet such standards, an after-sale service network is needed,” he added.

“This network will be responsible for tasks such as manpower training, service optimization, service offering control and the use of new technologies.”

Cambier made the remarks during a visit to Iran to attend the fourth edition of Iran Automotive Industry International Conference, which is underway in Milad Tower, Tehran.

“I am attending this conference for the fourth time: this shows our commitment to Iran,” he went on to say.

Iran Deploys 20,000 Navy Forces in Southeastern Coasts: Commander

Habibollah Sayyari

The Iranian Navy as a pioneer of the development of the Makran coasts has deployed 20,000 of its forces to the region, Rear Admiral Sayyari said in a speech at a gathering of managers of naval organizations on Sunday.

He added that the deployment of the Navy’s forces and efforts to provide grounds for public services in Makran coasts have helped develop the region.

The strategic Makran region has attracted the attention of many Iranian decision-makers and military officials, particularly after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed the need for the development of the region.

In November 2014, in a meeting with high-ranking Navy commanders, Ayatollah Khamenei said the issue of development of the coasts of Makran is a major task and plans for that region should be carried out more rapidly.

Moldova Can Count on Iran for Energy Demands: President Rouhani

rouhani-dodon

“With its high capabilities in producing oil, gas and gas condensates, the Islamic Republic of Iran can satisfy a major part of Moldova’s needs in this sphere,” President Rouhani said at a meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Igor Dodon in Tehran on Sunday.

Stressing the need for expansion of banking ties between Tehran and Chisinau as a stimulus to bilateral trade, the Iranian president said the two countries need to make efforts to inform investors and economic activists about the potential and capacities available in the two countries.

Rouhani also highlighted the role that Iran and Moldova can play in activating a major transit route connecting the Central Asia to Europe.

For his part, Dodon called for efforts to tap into Iran and Moldova’s capacities in order to promote economic and trade ties.

He also invited his Iranian counterpart to pay an official visit to Moldova.

Dodon had a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif earlier in the day.

Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania and Ukraine. It declared independence in August 1991, after dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Iran’s FM Zarif Congratulates Steinmeier’s Election as New German President

zarif-Steinmeier

“You will always be known as a prominent politician, supporter of peace and global discussion,” said Zarif via a statement released on Sunday

He also voiced hope that Steinmeier’s appointment would bring Iran and Germany closer together.

Earlier in the day, Steinmeier gained 931 of the 1,260 votes in a German parliamentary assembly to become the nation’s new president.

The vote came as incumbent Joachim Gauck, now 77, had announced last year that he would not seek a second five-year term because of his age.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also congratulated Steinmeier on his new role, stressing, “I have faith in him to lead our country in these difficult times.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin also offered his congratulations, while inviting the new German president to visit Moscow.

“Vladimir Putin confirmed his commitment to the continuation of constructive dialogue on the topical matters on bilateral and international agenda and invited Frank-Walter Steinmeier to visit Russia at his convenience,” read a statement released by the Kremlin.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk also penned a letter of congratulation, wishing Steinmeier success in his new role.

“Your appointment comes at a critical moment for Europe. The many external and internal challenges we are facing could hardly be more severe. In times like these, European unity is more important than ever, and I look forward to Germany’s continued contribution to the European project,” read part of the letter.

Esteghlal Wins 84th Tehran Derby by Sinking Perspolis

Alireza Mansourian’s blue-clad men could defeat the Reds 3-2 in an exhilarating match officiated by internationally recognized football referee Alireza Faghani, and in the 21st week of Persian Gulf Pro League, which is the highest level of the Iranian football league system.

The game kicked off at 3:08 p.m. local time (1122 GMT) at Azadi Stadium, western Tehran, on Sunday.

Persepolis footballers got off to an encouraging start despite the chill in the air, and ran the ball down the other side of the field immediately after the opening.

The Reds’ midfielder Mohsen Mosalman sent a left-foot volley on the opponents’ goal in the fifth minute. His teammate Soroush Rafiei was agile enough to collect the ball, and score the opener.

Esteghlal found a marvelous opportunity five minutes later, when Persepolis defender Hossein Mahini lost possession of the ball. The Blues simply squandered the chance though, and Persepolis forward Mehdi Taremi struck a header that went over the bar.

It was in the 17th minute that Persepolis made a ghastly mistake, and created an excellent opening for Esteghlal midfielder Farshid Esmaeili to penetrate and tack the equalizer.

The Blues’ celebration to draw level with the Reds had not subsided, when forward Ali Ghorbani doubled Esteghlal’s lead in the 20th minute with a header.

Persepolis footballers then created several clear chances but failed to score. Taremi flicked a header in the 30th minute that missed by only a short distance.

Ten minutes later, Persepolis defender Ramin Rezaeian hit a free kick that overshot its target.

In the dying moments of the first half, Esteghlal midfielder Omid Noorafkan lashed a volley at teammate Kaveh Rezaei, who sent the ball past goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and into the back of Persepolis’ net.

After the interval, Persepolis soccer players put Esteghlal’s goal under pressure to reduce the deficit. They even created several chances but lacked the cutting edge to get the job done.

Persepolis captain Seyyed Jalal Hosseini finally pulled a goal back in the 93rd minute, before Esteghlal goalie Mehdi Rahmati was shown the second yellow card and subsequently sent off the pitch.

Iranian Conservatives Unlikely to Nominate Female Presidential Candidate

Former speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel, believes that it would be highly improbable that the Iranian conservatives put up a female candidate in Iran’s presidential election due to be held on 19 May 2017.

Commenting on the forthcoming presidential election and the conservative party’s plan for it, he said the May election is required to be competitive, adding the move by the Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces [a new conservative party] to take part in it will be serious and steady.

According to a Farsi report by Borna News Agency, Haddad Adel also referred to the speculations about conservatives’ unity in the upcoming votes, and said one of the responsibilities of the Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces is to bring about unity among the faction’s members.

Commenting on the conservatives’ acceptance of the nominee due to be proposed by the Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces, Haddad Adel noted that efforts are underway to align all the parties with the Popular Front and help them achieve a consensus in this regard.

Expounding on the conservatives’ meetings about the forthcoming presidential elections, he said these sessions are currently being held, adding, they were held in the past and will be held in the future.

On the conservative party’s options for presidential candidacy, he dismissed the possibility that the party would field a female candidate, and said no decision has been made in this regard yet.

$8.5b in Foreign Funds Approved in Post-JCPOA Era: Iranian Minister

Nematzadeh

Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said the Organization for Investment and Technical Assistance of Iran has approved $8.5 billion worth of foreign investment after the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) by Iran and P5+1 in July 2015.

He made the remarks in an address to a ceremony in Kerman Province on Friday, February 10.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Nematzadeh also underlined the need for avoiding the export of raw materials, and said the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and senior Iranian officials have always stressed the importance of minimizing export of raw materials and raise overseas sales of high added-value products.

According to a Farsi report by the official website of Iran’s Ministry of Interior, he also expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of plans currently underway in the country to this end, adding, “Since the very beginning of my term in office, I have always underlined the need for raising the export of products with high added-value as one of our [long-term] objectives.”
