Iran, Russia Discuss Security, Ceasefire in Syria

shamkhani

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani has talked over the phone with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev as part of consultations between the two sides on the situation in Syria.

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, in their phone conversation, the two discussed the latest political and security developments in Syria as well as Tehran-Moscow cooperation on the Syria crisis.

During their discussions, Shamkhani highlighted the necessity to follow up and continue the political negotiations underway between the Syrian government and armed opposition groups. He said due regard should be paid to Syrian people’s right to self-determination as well as refraining from exerting foreign pressure during the process of political talks.

“With closer consultations and cooperation between the three countries of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation and Syria, a clear trend has started to [help] diminish the power and sphere of influence of terrorist groups, and establish a ceasefire in order to ensure people’s security. This trend should continue as new measures are adopted to meet Syrian people’s demands,” said the Iranian official.

Shamkhani referred to the start of a fresh round of talks in the Kazakh capital, Astana, and the process which has kicked off to help establish and sustain a ceasefire in Syria, and added the successful experience of initiating the Astana negotiations showed focusing on solutions which are based on regional cooperation can give fresh impetus to efforts aimed at ending the security crisis in Syria.

The Russian official, in turn, underlined the necessity of pressing ahead with consultations between the two countries in order to expedite the realization of political solutions, and said some extra-regional players ignore the need for the maintenance of Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty amid machinations aimed at disintegrating Syria.

He said the establishment and maintenance of a ceasefire in Syria and drawing on new political initiatives can help foil the dangerous plot to disintegrate the country.

Patrushev described the Astana talks as a successful initiative to help settle the Syria conflict and noted Iran and Syria should tap into the existing potential to influence the warring sides in a bid to prepare the ground to sustain the ceasefire in the country.

Bin Salman Remarks Show Riyadh’s Confrontational Policies: Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi was reacting on Wednesday to comments made by Mohammed bin Salman, who rejected the possibility of normalization of ties with Iran.

“Over the past years, Iran has shown in words and deeds that it endeavors towards utilizing common ground to reach understanding and cooperate with all regional countries,” Qassemi said.

He added that unity in the Islamic world towards resolving the crises in the region is of utmost importance to Iran.

The spokesmen went on to stress that these crises all result from foreign interference and extremist Takfiri terrorism which has roots in Saudi-backed Wahhabism.

Bin Salman Remarks Show Riyadh's Confrontational Policies: Iran

Wahhabism is the radical ideology dominating Saudi Arabia, freely preached by government-backed clerics there, and inspiring terrorists worldwide. Daesh and other Takfiri terror groups use the ideology to declare people of other faiths as “infidels” and then kill them.

On Tuesday, Salman, who is also Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, ruled out ties with Iran after Tehran announced the possibility of de-escalation of tension if Riyadh halted its war against Yemen.

He stressed that talks with Iran were impossible as Tehran’s goal was to “control the Muslim world.”

On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Islamic Republic was ready to normalize ties with Riyadh if the Kingdom halted its bombardment of Yemen and stopped supporting extremist groups.

Saudi Arabia has been incessantly pounding Yemen since March 2015 in an attempt to bring back to power the resigned president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is a staunch ally of Riyadh, and to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement. The Riyadh regime has, however, failed to reach its goals despite suffering great expense.

The military aggression has claimed the lives of more than 12,000 people, most of them civilians.

Iran Leader Offers Condolences on Deaths of Miners

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed deep sorrow over the ‘heartbreaking’ and ‘disastrous’ incident in a mine in Golestan province, which claimed the lives of a number of ‘hardworking’ and entrapped several others.

“It is required that all possible measures are taken to rescue the stranded people,” the Leader added in his Thursday message.

“The incident is very bitter, and I hope God will help them. I condole the families of all the dear victims, and I wish patience and peace for them, and God’s mercy for the trapped ones,” Ayatollah Khamenei added, calling on the authorities to expedite their efforts.

According to Iran’s Labour Minister Ali Rabiei, at least 35 have lost their lives in a coal mine blast in Golestan province, northeastern Iran. Several others were wounded in the deadly incident. Efforts are still underway to take out the trapped workers or their bodies.

The tragic explosion in a coal mine near the northeastern city of Azadshahr in Golestan province was the story today. Labour Minister Ali Rabiei says at least 35 miners have lost their lives, and efforts are underway to rescue the trapped workers or recover the bodies.

The second presidential debate due to be held on Friday also received great coverage. Many newspapers discussed whether the debate will once involve a clash between Rouhani and Qalibaf.

Newspapers also covered Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif’s visit to Pakistan and his talks with top Pakistani officials over the security of shared borders.

Iran FM Holds Talks with Top Pakistani Officials in Islamabad

Zarif arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday a few days after at least 9 Iranian border guards were killed by Pakistan-based terrorists near southeastern borders.

The Iranian FM today discussed bilateral relations, border issues and regional security with Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif.

Both sides in the meeting agreed to enhance mutual cooperation to solve border issues and stop terrorist activities on border areas, IRNA reported.

Nawaz Sharif also voiced his satisfaction over the growing ties between the two states, and expressed the hope that Tehran and Islamabad will continue to expand economic interaction for promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of trade and investment.

zarif-Sardar Ayaz Sadiq

Zarif had earlier called on Pakistan to capture and bring to justice the perpetrators of the last week’s terrorist attack in a meeting with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

He also urged Pakistan to push hard for the fight against terrorism and to prosecute and punish perpetrators of the attack.

For his part, Khan expressed condolences to Iran over the deaths of Iranian border guards in the terrorist attack, saying Islamabad is ready to resolve the problems through contacts with Iranian political, military, and local officials, Tasnim reported.

Pakistan wants to let the world know that Islamabad and Tehran will always side with each other and settle problems together, he added.

During the meeting, Zarif and Khan discussed joint action between the two Muslim neighbours in the fight against narcotics trafficking, illegal cross-border travels, and terrorism.

zarif-pakistanThe Iranian top diplomat also met Pakistani National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq later in the day. The Pakistani speaker also expressed regret over the recent cross-border attack and stressed his country’s preparedness to cooperate with Tehran in preventing such incidents and fighting against terrorism.

“On issues related to borders, we are fully ready to prevent the bitter and unpleasant border incidents between the two countries in cooperation and coordination with Iran,” Ayaz Sadiq said.

He also underscored his country’s preparedness to cooperate with Iran in the fight against terrorism.

“Iran is one of the most important countries for Pakistan and we, as two neighbouring, Muslim and friendly states can have the best and most cooperation,” Ayaz Sadiq said, as reported by Fars.

During the meeting, both sides also emphasized on the need for the Iranian and Pakistani military and police officials to tighten cooperation in the campaign against terrorism and adoption of preventive measures in this regard.

Last Wednesday, nine Iranian border guards were killed and two others injured in clashes near the Iranian town of Mirjaveh. Another guard was reportedly taken hostage by terrorists after being wounded. The Jaish ul-Adl terrorist group in a statement claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iranians Celebrate National Teachers’ Day

teacher-day-iran

National Teachers’ Day is observed across Iran, especially at schools and educational institutions where students hold special ceremonies.

Annually on May 1 or 2, you may see many school students clutching bunches of flowers in their hands as they hurry off to school, hoping to be the first to surprise their teacher on his or her special day.

Teaching is a profession considered sacred in Iran, as it is in many parts of the world, and young and old sustain an undying respect for those who strove so hard to increase their knowledge, honouring them with a small gift or flowers on this day.

Iranian people mark the day in memory of Ayatollah Morteza Motahari, one of the architects of the Islamic Republic and a man who devoted his life to opening up and writing about Islamic teachings. He was martyred on the same day in 1980.

Foreign Tourists Prefer Rural Houses to 5-Star Hotels in Iran’s Kerman

Foreign Tourists Prefer Rural Houses to 5-Star Hotels in Iran’s Kerman

Based on the latest figures by Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO), the number of foreign tourists travelling to Kerman Province in southeastern Iran has witnessed a five-fold increase over the past four years, with a large number of the visitors to the province finding its local guest houses, the rural people’s places of residence, much more attractive than its other types of accommodations.

According to a Farsi report by the Mehr News Agency, Kerman province has the highest number of globally – by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) – and nationally (700) registered archaeological sites as well as cultural and historical assets and relics among Iranian provinces.

However, despite its enormous tourism potentials, the province has failed to show a convincing performance in terms of attracting foreign visitors in the past years due to its officials’ failure to draw up sound plans.

Economic experts maintain that increasing tourism revenues can greatly help Iran reduce its reliance on its oil income. After being appointed Kerman Province’s governor in 2013, Alireza Razm Hosseini initiated to work out a targeted plan to expand the province’s tourism industry to deal with the tough conditions caused by the Western sanctions on Iran. Four years have elapsed since then, and now the plan has led to a five-fold growth in the number of foreign tourists to the province.

Foreign Tourists Prefer Rural Houses to 5-Star Hotels in Iran’s KermanAlthough the province’s historic buildings are being restored, recovered and renovated, no significant progress has been made in improving Kerman’s tourism infrastructure. Over the past few years, no new hotel has become operational in the province.

Using native and local people’s capacities and potentials was among the policies adopted by Kerman’s tourism officials to overcome the province’s shortage of appropriate infrastructure to accommodate the large number of tourists flocking to it.

Currently, there are boards and panels on wall in all cities of the province advertising local guest houses.

Mohammad is a native of Shahdad, one of Kerman’s villages, who migrated to Kerman city after losing his farmlands to drought. Upon knowing that loans for the renovation and restoration of local and historic houses were being granted to their owners, he returned to his village along with his wife and turned his residence into to a guest house to host foreign visitors.

When Living in Village Becomes More Lucrative than City

In addition to renovating his house and preparing it for hosting foreign tourists, Mohammad has also launched a small restaurant next to his residence and has even allocated a place to selling handicrafts. He is in no way willing to go back to the city.

Following Mohammad’s steps, a number of other villagers, who had left their hometown in search of higher income, returned to their villages as the economic situation there was getting better day after day.

In an interview with Mehr, Mohammad Jahanshahi, the deputy director general of ICHTO’s provincial office, said, “Preparing the ground for turning native people’s residences into guest houses has considerably brought down the number of migrations from the villages to Kerman’s cities. The trend has even helped Kerman become a role model for other provinces.”

European tourists, particularly those coming from cold and green regions, are intensely interested in visiting Kerman province. A number of them who have visited the province and its cities and villages more than once, have even opted to stay at the same guest house when returning to the region after a few years.

Commenting on the same issue, Mahmoud Vafaei, the director general of ICHTO provincial office, said, “Our statistics show that during the last [Iranian] year (ended mid-March 2017), 30,000 foreign tourists visited Kerman province, a record which has been unprecedented. There are five UNESCO world heritage sites in Kerman province which have helped bring the provincial cities, such as Bam, Mahan, Rayen, Shahdad, Jiroft, Qaleh Ganj, Shahr-e Babak, Meymand and Kerman, into spotlight as attractive destinations for foreign and domestic visitors.”

He added that most tourists visiting the province come from Europe, the US, and China.

“Hamas Paving Way for Israel’s Relocation of Capital to Quds”

Quds

Although the Palestinian Resistance Movement, Hamas, has announced it does not recognize the Israeli regime, the Movement has, by agreeing to return to the 1967 borders, practically accepted Israel’s plan to move the capital from Tel Aviv to al-Quds, said Hossein Naqavi Hosseini in a Farsi interview with ICANA.

He said the agreement to return to the 1967 borders is tantamount to accepting Washington’s demand and a betrayal of the cause of Palestine.

On the changes made to the Articles of Association of the Hamas movement, the MP said, “Developments unfolding in occupied Palestine and the region show certain groups and organizations established in the name of defending Palestinians are clearly retreating [from their positions],” said Naqavi Hosseini, who sits on the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

Given the current situation, he said, the Israeli regime and US allies in the Middle East are securing their rip on Palestinian land and expanding Jewish settlements.

Hamas’ backing down on its previous stances and giving the nod to the West’s policies in occupied territories will definitely not be accepted by Palestinian people, said the top MP, adding that “we will be facing reactions in protest.”

“After several decades of resistance and [Palestinians] paying the price for it, the changes in the Articles of Association are, in a way, regarded as folly,” said Naqavi Hosseini.

He touched upon US President Donald Trump’s upcoming trip to occupied Palestine and the plan to transfer the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to al-Quds, and said, “Hamas, intentionally or unintentionally, is paving the way for the transfer of the Israeli regime’s capital.”

He also referred to Intifada as another key issue related to Palestinians’ reaction to the plan to move the Israeli capital.

He said ongoing developments show the Israeli regime is cashing in on some Arab dictators’ silence in order to secure its domination over Palestinian land.

Iran to Use Drone for Cloud Seeding in Desert Areas

Iran to Use Drone for Cloud Seeding in Desert Areas

Farid Golkar, the director of Iranian Water Research Institute, announced that the centre has signed a contract with a reputable private company that designs drones for cloud seeding.

“The first test flight is to be taken in four months. It will take at least one year to carry out the necessary research and go into the clouds to seed them,” he added.

“The drone can fly in an altitude of 15,000 feet for eight to twelve hours, and has an effective payload of more than 50kg,” he noted, according to a Farsi report by Iran’s Department of Environment (DoE).

He then pointed that the cloud seeding plan has been earlier carried out using other types of aircraft in eight provinces.

“It is a new method to influence the natural clouds using chemicals which take more water out of them in the form of rain and snow,” he explained.

The growing drought in recent years has forced Iranian authorities to search for new ways of dealing with the water crisis.
