Launch of First TV Station for Women in Afghanistan

Launch of First TV Station for Women in Afghanistan

Zan TV (“Women’s TV”) will be launched on Sunday with a staff of all female presenters and producers, following a high-profile marketing campaign on billboards in Kabul and on social media.

Female newsreaders appear regularly on many Afghan channels, but an entire station for women is a novelty. Its arrival highlights the fact that behind the daily stories of violence, change is taking place in Afghanistan, even if it is often slow and patchy.

“I am so happy that this TV station has been created for women because there are women in our society who are not aware of their rights,” said 20-year-old Khatira Ahmadi, a producer at the station.

“So this station represents women and we work to raise the voice of women so they can defend their rights,” she said, as reported by Reuters.

Women’s rights and education as well as media freedom are often cited by the government and foreign aid organizations as among the biggest achievements in the country since the Taliban was toppled in 2001.

Still, Afghanistan is one of the most difficult places in the world for women in the media, and in a poor and war-ravaged country — with a crowded TV landscape of around 40 stations — there is no guarantee of success.

World Leaders Congratulate Rouhani on Winning Iran Election

World Leaders Congratulate Rouhani on Winning Iran Election

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev were the first world leaders to congratulate Rouhani on his re-election in separate messages.

Putin said in his message that Moscow is prepared for cooperation with Tehran in the bilateral and international arenas.

The Russian leader also called for efforts to implement bilateral agreements between the two countries, including a recent one signed during President Rouhani’s visit to Moscow in March.

Syrian President Assad lauded Iran’s presidential vote as an example for the world, saying it was held in light of democracy and perfect responsibility.

He further called for steady cooperation between Tehran and Damascus for contribution to bilateral, regional and international security and stability.

In his message, Aliyev said Rouhani’s re-election means the Iranian nation believes in his efforts to develop the country.

China’s President Xi Jinping also sent a message of congratulations to Rouhani, hoping for improved ties between Tehran and Beijing.

The Iranian president earlier received the first congratulatory message from Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, after his victory in the election was declared.

Rouhani’s Rivals Congratulate Him on Re-Election

In a message on Saturday, Hashemitaba said he is grateful to “the great nation of Iran”, the Guardian Council, the Interior Ministry and the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and others who contributed to the successful organization of the election on Friday.

“Once again, the brave Iranian nation showed their maturity and (ability to) recognize what is best for them through electing Dr. Hassan Rouhani as president,” the candidate said.

He further offered his congratulations to Rouhani and wished him continued success in serving the Iranian nation.

Mirsalim also in a Saturday message praised the Iranian people for bringing glory to the country with the huge turnout in the Friday’s election, and expressed gratitude to the voters who cast their ballots in his favour, Tasnim reported.

He also congratulated the president-elect for his success to win trust of the absolute majority of the voters.

Mirsalim further expressed the hope that the next president would enhance national unity in his term, be able to make up for the lost opportunities, and counter corruption.

The final election results declared earlier on Saturday showed that 57 percent of votes counted from Friday’s presidential voting have gone to Rouhani, securing his second term in office.

Iran Leader Appreciates People’s Epic Turnout in Elections

Iran Leader - Ayatollah Khamenei

“The winner of the yesterday’s elections, is you, the Iranian people, and the Islamic establishment, which has managed to win the increasing trust of this big nation despite the enemies’ plot and effort,” the Leader said on Saturday.

The Leader added that the “massive and enthusiastic” participation of the Iranian people, who stood in long lines to reach the ballot boxes throughout the country, was “a clear indication of the strength of the pillars of the Islamic democracy.”

Elsewhere in his message, Ayatollah Khamenei stated that during the Friday elections, people from all walks of life and various political affiliations took part in elections together and once again voted for the Islamic establishment.

The Leader urged the Iranian people to thank God for their success in holding elections, saying that after going through hectic days and weeks ahead of elections, they must now think about unity and public solidarity, which is undoubtedly an important factor boosting power and might of the nation.

Ayatollah Khamenei also recommended the elected president and all people who will be part of the next administration to pursue “highly-motivated and thoughtful and youthful efforts” in order to do away with the country’s problems and do not neglect this right path even for a moment.

Another point reminded by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution was maintaining “national dignity while observing wisdom in international relations” and making efforts to boost the country’s international might, which the Leader said were among priorities in revolutionary and Islamic management of the country’s affairs.

Ayatollah Khamenei also praised presidential candidates for creating necessary fervor for elections, all officials involved in executive and supervisory aspects of the Friday elections, as well as the state-run television and all forces that played a role in ensuring security of the elections.

Final Results of Iran’s Presidential Election Declared

In a press conference on Saturday, Interior Minister Rahmani Fazli told reporters that 41,220,131 Iranian people have voted in the country’s presidential election held on Friday.

According to a report by IFP, the figure shows a high turnout of over 73%.

Rahmani Fazli said Rouhani has won the election by securing 23,549,616 votes, which accounts for 57% of total ballots.

Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, the conservative rival of Rouhani, has also finished second by receiving 15,786,449 votes (38.5%).

478,215 voters have voted for Seyyed Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim and 215,450 for Seyyed Mostafa Hashemitaba, according to Rahmani Fazli.

1,190,401 votes were also invalid, the minister said, stressing that the results are based on counting 99.7% of voting stations, and can be regarded as the final results.

EU’s Mogherini Congratulates Rouhani on Re-Election

“Iranians took passionately part to political life of their country. I congratulate President Hassan Rouhani for strong mandate received,” Mogherini noted in a post in her Twitter account.

“EU [is] ready to continue work for full JCPOA [the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers] implementation, bilateral engagement, regional peace, and meeting expectations of all people in Iran,” she went on to say.

Iranian people on Friday went to ballot boxes across Iran and the world to vote for their favourite presidential candidates.

The main competition was between Rouhani and his conservative rival Ebrahim Raisi.

According to Iran’s state TV, Rouhani has already secured enough votes to become Iran’s president for the second four-year term.

He has so far gained 58.5% of the votes, while Raisi has received 39.7%. The final results are going to be declared by the Iranian Interior Ministry in half an hour.

“Iran Derives Stability from Its People, Not from Coalitions”

Iran FM

“We derive stability not from ‘coalitions’, but from our people, who – unlike many – do vote,” Zarif said in a post in his Twitter account on Saturday.

“Iranians must be respected,” the Iranian top diplomat said, stressing that the nation is ready to engage [with other nations in the region].

His remarks came as US President Donald Trump is going to attend a meeting with heads of 50 Arab states in Riyadh which is aimed at forming an alliance called the “Islamic NATO” in order to counter Iran.

Based on speculations by Western media, Trump is also trying to encourage Saudi Arabia to strengthen their relations with the Israeli regime in order to better tackle their common enemy, Iran.

Trump’s Riyadh Visit Eclipsed by High Turnout in Iran Election

Trump’s Riyadh Visit Eclipsed by High Turnout in Iran Election-1

US President Donald Trump arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, on the first leg of his first overseas trip as president to hold talks with Riyadh authorities. Trump is going to attend a meeting with heads of 50 Arab states which, as Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud says, is amed at forming an alliance called the “Islamic NATO” in order to counter Iran.

Based on speculations by Western media, Trump is also trying to encourage Saudi Arabia to strengthen their relations with the Israeli regime in order to better tackle their common enemy, Iran.

Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in an interview with the Saudi MBC network around three weeks ago made a series of threats against Iran. He said Riyadh would not wait to see a war break out in Saudi Arabia, but will try to get the conflict to erupt inside Iran. Such efforts became more obvious a little later when terrorist groups expanded their activities along Iran’s borders, especially the attack on Iranian border guards by terrorists from inside Pakistan.

Some observers believe these threatening remarks by the Saudi defence minister on the threshold of Trump’s trip to Riyadh were an attempt by Saudi Arabia to draw the US president’s support for anti-Iran efforts made by Riyadh and its allies. Also, Saudi Arabia reinforced activities by Riyadh-backed terrorist groups on Iranian borders, and at the same time, tried to form a military alliance known as the “Arab NATO” to prove itself to Washington as a country which is at forefront of confrontation with Iran.

Trump’s Riyadh Visit Eclipsed by High Turnout in Iran Election

Nevertheless, maybe Saudi princes had not considered the coincidence of Trump’s trip with Iran’s presidential election. The vote marked by a high turnout has taken international observers by surprise. The ballot was attended by people from all walks of life, including Iranian Sunni citizens, who Saudi Arabia believes have a lot of influence. This may raise a question for the Americans who are guests of Saudi Arabia: Can a country, whose name has been taken from the dynasty ruling it, be a reliable ally to confront a “hostile” country where just voters outnumber the whole Saudi population?

Maybe if Trump’s plane is allowed to fly across the Iranian airspace at a low altitude whereby he will be able to see the fervour and enthusiasm of tens of millions of Iranian voters, the first question he would ask the Saudi king and princes would be about the “meaning of election.”

Rouhani Re-Elected as Iran’s President: State TV

Rouhani Re-Elected as Iran’s President: State TV

Iran’s state TV on Saturday congratulated Rouhani on his re-election as Iran’s president after the Elections Headquarters declared that he has secured 22,796,468 votes out of more than 38 million votes counted so far.

This means Rouhani has won the election by a wide margin, as his main rival Raisi has received 15,452,194 votes so far.

Rouhani has so far won 58.5%, and Raisi 39.7% of the votes.

The final results will are scheduled to be declared in two hours, according to the Interior Ministry.

Earlier on Saturday, Deputy Chief of Staff of Rouhani’s office Hamid Aboutalebi had suggested in a post in his Twitter account that Rouhani has won the second term by securing 62% of the 42 million votes.
