Tehran Attacks Mastermind Killed Outside Iran: Minister

alavi

During a televised interview on Saturday, Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said that the terrorist commander was killed earlier in the day by intelligence forces.

He noted that the terrorist had fled the country following the ensuing security operations after the attack, but was killed with the cooperation of friendly foreign intelligence services.

At least 17 people were killed and 52 others injured in Tehran on Wednesday when gunmen mounted almost simultaneous assaults on Iran’s Parliament and the Mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini. The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

After offering condolences to the families of the attacks victims, Alavi stressed that over the past few months the country’s intelligence forces had neutralized over 25 terrorist cells.

He added that the large number of terrorist operations thwarted by Iran had pushed the terrorists into engaging in the Wednesday attacks.

Alavi also noted that in a recent intelligence raid a large amount of automatic weapons and grenade launchers were obtained from a terrorist group.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Police chief Hossein Ashtari has announced that a group of some 60 suspects has also been detained near Tehran in relation to the terrorist attacks.

Qatari FM Says Not Met with Iran’s General Soleimani

In an interview with RT Arabic in Moscow on Saturday, the Qatari official rejected the news by some media, saying that “all these are illusions.”

The crisis in Qatar was caused by fabricated news when the country’s state news agency was hacked, he added.

He went on to say that all the statements in this regard [his meeting with General Soleimani] are contradictory.

Al-Thani also confirmed that Doha is interested in ties with Tehran stressing that his country will maintain positive relations with the Islamic Republic.

About the aim of his trip to Moscow, al-Thani mentioned that he is in Moscow to inform Russia about the dimensions of the crisis in Qatar’s relations with Saudi Arabia and its allies.

The diplomatic row came after Qatari News Agency posted a speech attributed to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in which he supported boosting ties with Iran.

However, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said that the agency’s site was hacked and the speech was published by hackers.

Mansourian Sisters: From Wushu Champions to Real-Life Heroines

Iranian female wushu champions Soheila, Elaheh and Shahrbanou Mansourian, who along with their sister Marziyeh were the guests of a live TV talk show during the holy month of Ramadan, have now turned into real heroines. This came when, before the eyes of millions of audience, they recounted the story of the odds they overcame to tread on the path to success.

Mansourian Sisters- alikhaniUp until that night (June 2), Mansourian sisters were, in the eyes of Iranian people, only three wushu champions who were used to shining in national and international competitions. What most people primarily remembered of them was their broad smile while standing on international podiums, posing with their medals for photos. A smile that in fact was a veil behind which they hid their immense pain and sadness. Nevertheless, their agony and grief was eventually laid bare to the public on the night they shared their life secrets with people in the popular TV talk show called “Maah-e Asal”, which means honeymoon.

“Maah-e Asal” is broadcast live on Iran’s state TV every evening during the holy month of Ramadan. People from different walks of life are invited to the show to recount the story of their life.

Path to Glory

During the past month, Mansourian sisters all snatched medals in international competitions. Nevertheless, the sisters, winning a total of more than 30 Asian and world medals, have had a difficult life. Having succumbed to the difficulties of life, their father left them while they were still little kids. As of then, Shahrbanou, the eldest sister, had to shoulder the burden of earning the family’s livelihood and raising her younger sisters. However, this was not a new responsibility for her, as prior to the father’s departure, she had worked shoulder to shoulder with him to make the ends meet.

Elaheh and Shahrbanou become familiar with wushu by chance. The martial art was not taught in the proximity of Semirom city in the central Iranian province of Isfahan and they did not have enough money to commute between Semirom and the capital city of Isfahan, where wushu classes were held. Therefore, each day one of them could attend the class and share the lessons with the other sister.

On the talk show, Shahrbanou told the audience about the days when she had to work at other people’s houses and gardens. She also described how she was filling large cubic tin cans with cement to use them as dumbbell or barbell. Elaheh spoke of the day when she won her first medal and received a 257-dollar cash prize – the largest amount of money she had earned up to that day. She also talked about the bronze she snatched in the 52kg weight class in Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games.

She recounted the story of how she managed to continue the match with her South Korean opponent Kim Hye-bin in the final of the 2013 World Wushu Championships in Kuala Lumpur, despite her injuries, to grab gold in the women’s 52kg Sanda bouts. She described how she won the title with a broken cheek and nose:

Mansourian Sisters: From Wushu Champions to Real-Life Heroines“Victory in the final could change our life. In the first round, I had a broken nose and cheekbone and I picked up a black eye. The swelling had shut one of my eyes. My coach told me not to continue the fight, but I insisted to carry on. I asked her not to use her towel to ask the referee to stop the bout for my injury. I also asked the referee not to end the match. I swallowed the blood so as not to let the referee notice my bleeding. My cheek was also broken. Nevertheless, I was just thinking of emerging victorious in that bout for I wanted to make my mother happy.”

Elaheh also regretted not being able to stand on the podium and receive her gold medal as she had fainted after the match and was taken to hospital due to the severity of her injuries. She said she had endured all these hardships because she needed the cash prize to make her mother happy. She said she could cope with all those difficulties because she had fought a lot in life and was used to fighting.

Reconciling with Father

Mansourian Sisters1The show also had a surprise for two of the sisters, Elaheh and Marziyeh, who claimed that they had never been able to forgive their father after he left them. Up until that night, they had not at all talked to him for 15 years.

However, the host of the talk show, Ehsan Alikhani, had secretly invited their father to the show and after only a couple of minutes into the show, asked Shahrbanou to go to the backstage to accompany her father to the stage.

Amid tears, emotions and lots of hugging, Elaheh and Marziyeh met their father after 15 years and reconciled with him.

Reactions

Following the show, Mansourian sisters turned into Iranian people’s new heroines. A number of Iranian celebrities reacted to the talk show and Mansourian sisters’ account of their difficulties and hard work. They posted messages, along with the sisters’ photos, on their Instagram page, praising their achievements. Among them were the former footballer and world’s all-time leading goal scorer Ali Daei, international football player Jalal Hosseini, famous actress Parastou Salehi, and feminist filmmaker Tahmineh Milani.

Mansourian Sisters: From Wushu Champions to Real-Life HeroinesDaei posted a photo of Soheila, Elaheh and Shahrbanou on his Instagram page and wrote: “[These are] the true heroines of the country who have suffered the hardest blows in life, but have never surrendered. They showed everyone their dignity, wisdom and selflessness. Now, they have been rewarded for their hard work. These are the heroines and champions who truly defined courtesy and ethics. I am proud of you.”

Parastou Salehi’s message reads: “They are the real lionhearted women of Iran. I am proud of Mansourian sisters, particularly Shahrbanou who is the eldest one. I am also proud of myself and my homeland for being home to such great women. Well done. I supplicate God to bestow upon you the best things in life. In the end, I want Elaheh and Marziyeh to forgive their father from the bottom of their heart. Maybe, it was due to his departure that you have achieved such a status today. I wish I had forgiven my father when I had still time to do so.”

Hosseini also wrote: “The real heroines of Iran, I am proud of you.”

Mansourian sisters are no longer just wushu champions; they have become real-life heroines.

Crimean-Congo Fever under Full Control in Iran: Minister

Health Minister Seyyed Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi said that the rate of the infection is subdued and there is no reason to worry.

Speaking in a ceremony in the Iranian capital of Tehran on June 10, the Iranian Health official added that since the disease has been controlled in Iran, it is not expected to see any new cases of people contracting CCHF virus.

He went on to say that over the past three weeks, no new patient has been diagnosed with CCHF and the issue is over and done.

“However, this, by no means, implies that the safety issues can be overlooked. Great care should be taken and we advise people to buy meat from authorized outlets,” Qazizadeh added.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CCHF spreads to humans either by tick-bites, or through contact with viremic animal tissues during and immediately post-slaughter.

CCHF outbreaks constitute a threat to public health services because of its epidemic potential, its high case fatality ratio (10-40%), its potential for nosocomial outbreaks and the difficulties in treatment and prevention.

CCHF is endemic in all of Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, and in Asia south of the 50° parallel north, the geographic limit of the genus Hyalomma, the principal tick vector.

Over 60 Arrested in Connection with Tehran Attacks: Reports

Iran Police

Iran’s intelligence and security forces have stepped up their operations inside and outside the country over the past couple of days, according to a Farsi report by Fars News Agency.

Following the Wednesday’s twin attacks in Tehran, which claimed the lives of 17 and wounded over 45 people, Iranian forces have captured at least 62 suspects and also seized lots of weapons and explosive devices.

In the latest joint operation by the Iranian intelligence and security forces on Saturday morning, members of a terrorist cell were identified and arrested on the outskirts of Tehran, Press TV reported.

Iran’s Police Chief, Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari, cited the “good cooperation” of the Iranian people with police and other security forces as having been conducive to the identification and arrest of the terrorists.

Eight more individuals were also arrested on suspicion of providing backup for the five terrorists who carried out the June 7 attacks in Tehran.

According to Fars, Ahmad Fazelian, a provincial judiciary official, said seven of the individuals were detained in Fardis, Alborz province, and the last one was apprehended in Karaj, the provincial capital, about 50 km west of Tehran.

In separate operations, seven people were detained in Larestan County of the southern Fars province for possible ties to ISIS. A non-Iranian suspect has also been arrested in the southern port city of Mahshahr.

At least 41 ISIS members have been identified and arrested by Iran’s intelligence forces in separate operations in Kermanshah, Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan and Tehran provinces. According to a statement by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry, a large number of documents, and devices used by terrorists, were also confiscated.

Back on Friday, Iran’s Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said intelligence forces have identified the hideout in which the perpetrators of Tehran twin attacks had convened to plan their terrorist acts. Meanwhile, a number of terrorists were arrested in the hideout.

On Thursday, the Intelligence Ministry released the pictures and first names of perpetrators of the attacks identifying the five gunmen as Qayyoum, Abu Jihad, Ramin, Serias, and Fereydoun, without announcing their surnames.

According to the ministry’s statement, the five attackers were terrorists with criminal backgrounds who were linked to “Wahhabi and Takfiri groups”.

Iraqi Forces Kill 2,000 ISIS Elements, Retake Hundreds of Villages

Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis

Deputy Commander of the PMU, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, says that popular forces have managed to kill about 2,000 ISIS terrorists in their operation in western Mosul.

Declaring readiness to liberate Tal Afar in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh, al-Muhandis stressed that “we are awaiting the directive from the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces on this issue.”

Following the complete liberation of the border areas, he said, the control of these zones will be handed over to the Iraqi border police units.

The PMU’s deputy commander noted that in this operation, the engineering unit of Hashd al-Shaabi fighters ensured security within more than 1,000 kilometres of the borders, adding, “We also retook 50-60 kilometres of the common border between Iraq and Syria from the terrorists.”

Kurdistan Referendum to Exacerbate Iraq’s Problems: Iran

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi made the statements in response to Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government’s decision to hold independence referendum on September 25.

A unified, stable and democratic Iraq guarantees the interests of all people from all ethnic and religious groups, Qassemi added.

Referring to the complicated situation in Iraq and the region, the Iranian official said, “Kurdistan Region is part of the Republic of Iraq and any unilateral decisions that are not within the legal and national framework of the country’s laws, especially its constitution, could just create more problems in the country while the ill-wishers are planning for continuation of instability.”

“Today, Iraq is more than ever in need of peace and national reconciliation and the disputes between Baghdad and Erbil must be resolved through dialogue and national reconciliation in accordance with the Iraqi constitution,” the Iranian spokesperson said.

Last month Kurdish parties announced a plan to hold a referendum on independence in September, but Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has stressed that the country’s territorial integrity must be preserved.

Trump to Appoint Terrorists’ Supporter as Counterterrorism Coordinator

The White House said in a statement on Friday that Nathan A. Sales, a former Homeland Security official, will be introduced by Donald Trump for the post.

Sales has previously served as a senior counsel at the Department of Justice.

He was also among those who supported a petition to challenge the US Secretary of State’s designation of Mojahedin-e Khaq Organization (MKO) and its allies as a terrorist organization back in 2010.

As a result of efforts made by Sales and a group of US lawmakers, the MKO terrorist group was removed from the US list of foreign terrorist organizations in 2012.

The MKO is known as the most hated terrorist group among the Iranians. The group has carried out many terrorist assaults against Iranian civilians and government officials over the past thirty years.

Since the victory of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, thousands of Iranians have been killed in terrorist attacks, most of them victims of MKO’s brutal acts of terror.

FILMADRID to Praise Iranian Maestro of Absurd Cinema

FILMADRID to Praise Iranian Maestro of Absurd Cinema

This year’s FILMADRID International Cinema Festival, which started on June 8 and will be underway until June 17, has dedicated a special section to Iranian comedies and cinema of the absurd.

The season will attempt to focus on an unknown, complex and unconventional cinematography often overlooked by the western media which, has a tendency to prefer the more contemplative films of Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi instead.

Traditionally the use of humour and the absurd have been employed as a valuable means to express the realities of Iranian society.

The recent history of Iran has been the principal source of inspiration for bold filmmakers who, via comedy verging on surrealism and the absurd express the current living conditions of their fellow countrymen.

FILMADRID to Praise Iranian Maestro of Absurd CinemaAccording to the festival’s official website, the undisputed maestro of this genre is Mani Haghighi, whose most recent work A Dragon Arrives! (2016), had its worldwide premiere in the official section of the Berlin film festival.

Set in the 60’s the main character is a detective from Tehran who is sent to investigate the suicide of a political prisoner on a remote island in the Persian Gulf. The journey brings the main character face to face with the more ancient aspects of the country, a hostile territory whose rumblings arouse the supernatural. The director presents a virtuous mix of documentary, film noir, science fiction and comedy of the absurd to reflect the climate of chaos and corruption prevalent in the time of the Shah.

A Dragon Arrives signifies the definitive arrival of Haghighi on the scene whose previous works Abadan (2004), Men at Work (2006) and Modest Reception (2012) had positioned him as the most innovative and critical filmmaker at work in the country.

The retrospective series also includes work from masters such as Dariush Mehrjui – whose film The Tenants (1986) was the first of the comedies of the absurd in Iran as well as young talents such as Shahram Mokri and Ali Ahmadzadeh.

Fundamental questions dealing with the rise of capitalism, the confrontation between the traditional and the modern and the women’s place in Iranian society will all be considered in this ambitious season which will present the country from a more realistic, funny and subversive point of view.
