Iran Top Officer Arrives in Ankara in First-Ever Foreign Trip

Iran Top Officer Arrives in Ankara

General Baqeri, accompanied by IRGC Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour and a number of other high-ranking officials, arrived in Ankara on Tuesday morning to meet with his Turkish counterpart and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Iranian top officer’s Turkey visit is the first foreign trip by a chief of staff of Iranian Armed Forces since the 1979 Revolution.

During his three-day stay, the Iranian official will confer with Turkish authorities on the issue of fight against terrorism, regional developments, Tehran-Ankara defensive ties, and border cooperation will be discussed during the meetings.

Iran Football Wins Case against Saudi Arabia at CAS

Iran has won a case against Saudi Arabia in the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after seriously pursuing the matter for quite some time, according to a Farsi report by Varzesh3 news website.

Iran’s Football Federation filed a lawsuit against its Saudi counterpart a year ago for the Arab federation’s refusal to allow its footballers to come to Iran. Representatives and lawyers from both countries held meetings at the CAS for almost a year amid a political tug of war between Tehran and Riyadh. Finally, it was announced that Iran had won the case against Saudi Arabia.

In the last session of the CAS, Saudi Arabia was convicted and sentenced to paying damages and all costs caused by its wrong decision. The costs include the expenses of Iranian representatives’ trips to third countries as well as fines.

With this verdict, we should now wait and see which side will host matches between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the next AFC Champions League season. Iran has announced it has no problem sending its players to Saudi Arabia. The court ruling can make Saudi Arabia host games after several years.

What is interesting is that the CAS, based on its rules, has not allowed the Iranian Football Federation to announce the news on the ruling to media. Anyway, Iran’s winning the case is good news and a success for the Islamic Republic. We should also wait and see how the Asian Football Confederation will react to the news.

IRGC Rejects US Claims on ‘Unsafe’ Drone Operation

The IRGC’s drone division released a statement on Tuesday stressing that all aerial operations in Iran’s Air Defense Identification Zone are carried out in accordance with the standard safety regulations, rejecting the claims by the US Navy.

“IRGC drone patrols in Iran’s Air Defense Identification Zone will continue with precision and in a continues manner to safeguard the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran without taking heed to the psychological warfare operations of foreign forces present in the Persian Gulf,” added the statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, US Navy spokesman Lieutenant Ian McConnaughey said in a statement that an Iranian QOM-1 drone flew within 300 meters (1,000 feet) of aircraft based on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier in international waters on Sunday night, calling it an “unsafe and unprofessional” incident.

“Despite repeated radio calls to establish communications and remain clear, the QOM-1’s controlling station was unresponsive and the (drone) did not use any aircraft navigation lights while it made several passes in close proximity to Nimitz and its escort ships during active flight operations, coming within 1,000 feet of US aircraft,” he said.

Iranian forces are tasked with guaranteeing security within the country’s maritime borders, where they have been involved in a series of face-offs with US vessels for intrusion into Iranian territorial waters.

Iran has repeatedly warned that any act of transgression into Iran’s territorial waters would be met with an immediate and befitting response.

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers. It has also conducted major drills to enhance its defense capabilities.

Iran’s Rouhani, Russia’s Putin Discuss Bilateral Ties

In the conversation, President Rouhani said enhancement of strategic relations with the neighbors, particularly with Russia, constitutes a principled policy of Iran.

Stressing the need for closer economic interaction between the two countries, he said Iran welcomes cooperation with the Russian investors and private sectors in the implementation of various projects.

President Rouhani also touched on the complicated situation in the region and the conflicts in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria, emphasizing the necessity for close coordination between Iran and Russia in resolving the tensions and in the fight against terrorism.

He further described the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a multilateral agreement, and slammed the US government for violating the nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Rouhani underlined that Iran has remained fully committed to the nuclear deal, saying the reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency have verified such commitment.

For his part, Putin called for stronger relations between Russia and Iran, saying the Russian investors and economic activists are eager to be involved in projects inside Iran.

He also urged close interaction between Tehran and Moscow in settling the regional conflicts, particularly in the fight against terrorism in Syria, saying Tehran-Moscow cooperation has yielded good results in stabilizing the situation in the region.

Putin also noted that the IAEA has verified Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and emphasized that violation of the deal by any side would be a breach of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Iran Condoles with Sierra Leone over Deadly Landslide

Iran Condoles with Sierra Leone over Deadly Landslide

In his Tuesday statement, Qassemi also expressed sympathy with the Muslim nation and government of Sierra Leone.

More than 300 people have been killed after a mudslide and heavy flooding in Sierra Leone.

A coroner’s official said that more than 200 bodies had been taken to the city mortuary, which was left struggling to cope. The Red Cross said the death toll had risen to 312.

However, a precise death toll is not yet clear and is likely to rise as many people might have been asleep when the mudslide happened in the early hours of Monday.

An estimated 2,000 people have also been made homeless after heavy rains caused properties to disappear under water.

Iran to Avenge ISIS Killing of Mohsen Hojaji: IRGC

Commander of the Ground Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour says Iran has expanded its operational fields, and its sphere of combat and defence has gone beyond the country’s borders.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony held to honour martyr Mohsen Hojaji and his family. An Iranian military advisor in Syria, Hojaji was captured and decapitated by ISIS terrorists a few days ago.

According to a Farsi report by the Fars News Agency, the top general went on to say that the enemy resorted to different plots after the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s to deal a blow to the Islamic Republic.

“It’s been several years we’ve been fighting terrorists backed by hegemonic powers and the wicked Al Saud rulers in southeast, west, northwest and southwest of Iran. However, we have good tranquility in the country and an acceptable level of security,” said the top general.

In addition to all these threats, he said, Iran has faced another front in Syria in recent years.

“Takfiris backed by hegemonic powers and Saudi Arabia attacked Iraq and Syria, and if they hadn’t been stopped, they would have left behind no trace of Damascus, Karbala, Najaf and Shiites. However, the Islamic Republic of Iran got engaged in defending holy shrines by taking on an advisory role,” he said.

“We assumed an advisory role in Syria and Iraq at the request of their governments, not like the Americans and others who entered those countries without permission,” he said.

He then stressed that the IRGC will avenge the killing of martyr Hojaji.

“It’s not necessary to say how we will take revenge, but our objective is to take vengeance and we are determined to do it,” the commander emphasized.

Iran Welcomes Baghdad-Erbil Talks: Spokesman

In a statement on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi embraced local talks between the Iraqi central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

“Iraqi leaders and people have, through rapport and unity, secured invaluable achievements in countering terrorism and liberating territories occupied by ISIS, and now in the new phase, through understanding and brotherhood and via constructive domestic talks, they will be able to take greater steps on the path to stability and lasting security, which are a precursor to Iraq’s reconstruction and development,” said the spokesman.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a neighbouring country and friend of Iraq, while understanding the common destiny of the regional nations, wishes success for the Iraqi government and people, and as before, would like to have very good relations with all political, social, religious and ethnic sectors in Iraq, and in the new phase, stands ready like before to share all its experiences and potential with the Iraqi government and nation to contribute to the country’s prosperity and reconstruction,” Qassemi added.

Iran Gov’t Urged to Pursue “Policy of Frowning” against US

Iran Gov’t Urged to Pursue “Policy of Frowning” against US

Iranian parliamentarians believe Iran should continue its “diplomacy of smile” and seek to enhance its engagement with the world and pay due regard to the economic diplomacy, but should also adopt a “diplomacy of frowning” vis-à-vis the United States, reports ICANA.

Parliament representative Ali Vadaye’ says the parliament floor has turned into the hub of consultations on the 12th administration. He said MPs are holding intense talks with the proposed ministers in a bid to lay out an appropriate plan for the next four years.

Both advocates and critics of President Hassan Rouhani are present in the discussions.

Supporters of the Rouhani administration say the results of the 2017 Iranian presidential election, in fact, showed voters approved of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s diplomatic moves and the diplomacy of smile.

On the other hand, the critics of the foreign policy of the Rouhani administration argue that other factors such as political sentiments also influenced people’s votes. They say if Iran smiles too much while facing the West, it will embolden hegemonic powers. Critics also believe the Iran nuclear deal has not had many benefits for Tehran.

In response to this criticism, supporters of Zarif say economic institutions are the ones responsible for reaping the benefits of the nuclear deal.

Irrespective of all the support for, or criticism of the eleventh administration’s foreign policy, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has clearly and straightforwardly specified the path of diplomacy of the twelfth administration for the next four years. The Leader stressed the first priority should be “addressing people’s economic and livelihood problems” followed by “extensive interaction with the world” as the second priority.

Amid all dos and don’ts of the twelfth administration, reports on US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy suggest he has been ratcheting up the pressure and threats against the Rouhani administration. Now, at a time when the US president is trying to intensify the policy of Iranophobia while breaching the nuclear deal, Iranian MPs believe Tehran should adopt the “policy of frowning” in dealing with Washington.

New Requirements in Rouhani’s New Term

Lawmaker Massoud Goodarzi says a key priority of the new administration, given the Leader’s remarks, should be to boost interaction with the world.

He said Iran should expand its relations with both neighbouring countries and non-neighbors.

“The European Union has a good atmosphere for interaction with Tehran,” he said.

Need for New Programs at Foreign Ministry

Mohammad Javad Jamali Nobandegani, another lawmaker, said different programs should be pursued at the Iranian Foreign Ministry given the schemes orchestrated by Netanyahu, Trump and Bin Salman.

He noted that the enemies of Iran are seeking to isolate the country more than ever before, and leave no stone unturned to have the nuclear deal scuttled.

He also urged the new administration to do more to further increase engagement with world countries.

Domain of Iran’s Geopolitical Interests Should be Redefined

Legislator Morteza Saffari Natanzi also said the Foreign Ministry needs serious restructuring and draw up new strategies given the developments in the past four years.

“Iran’s regional power as well as its global influence has increased. In order to seize this opportunity, the diplomacy apparatus should put new plans on its agenda,” said the parliamentarian.

He also said the domain of Iran’s interests should be seriously redefined.

Regional Interactions Should Top Tehran’s Foreign Policy Agenda

Lawmaker Heshmat Falahat-Pisheh said the priority of the country’s diplomacy agenda should be to ease tensions.

“President Rouhani should pay due regard to Iran’s regional diplomacy during his second 4-year term, and promotion of engagement with neighbours, especially Persian Gulf littoral states, should be on the agenda,” he noted.

“We’ve been witnessing positive signals from Saudi Arabia and some neighbouring countries in recent days, which should be taken into consideration,” he said.

He also called on the Foreign Ministry to work towards absorbing foreign investment.

Iran Should Turn Blind Eye to Trump’s Sabre-Rattling

Mohammad Javad Kolivand, another legislator, weighed in on Washington’s ramping up its hostile moves against Iran as well as US President Donald Trump’s bellicose positions.

He said Iran should not allow its programs to be eclipsed by Washington’s bellicosity.

“We shouldn’t look to Trump to regulate our programs because he used to have a position in the domain of economy and has no understanding of diplomatic principles and international relations,” he noted.

He said the new administration should look to Ayatollah Khamenei’s guidelines for its diplomacy.

Diplomacy of Smile Should Continue

Lawmaker Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh said Iran’s nuclear negotiating team managed to secure Iranians’ rights during intense bargaining with the P5+1 group and get the sanctions lifted.

“Iran managed to take giant steps in its foreign policy domain with the diplomacy of smile, and this approach should definitely be maintained in the 12th administration’s diplomacy arena,” he said.

He expressed hope the diplomacy apparatus will make a few tactical changes in dealing with some peripheral issues to move forward more actively.

During her visit to Tehran’s District 12, Alwach visited the National Museum, Golestan Palace, Tehran bazaar, Oudlajan bazaar, and the remains of a 7,000-year-old woman discovered in southern Tehran.

After the visit, Alwach said Iran’s historical sites are ‘very attractive’ and ‘valuable’. She also referred to Tehran as an orderly and huge city with 7,000 years of history.

“One can see interesting examples of historical and valuable works in Tehran’s museums,” she went on to say, according to a Farsi report by IRNA.

Here are Tehran Picture Agency’s photos of her tour of the Iranian capital:

Mongolia Raps US Bans on Iran, Russia, N. Korea

Mongolian president’s special envoy Lundeg Purevsuren has lashed out at Washington’s sanctions on Iran, saying, “Sanctions are not good, and we condemn them.”

The Mongolian official said the recent sanctions imposed on Iran, North Korea and Russia are not friendly, adding, “We don’t recognize the US sanctions because slapping sanctions are not a good way and we denounce them.”

Speaking in a Farsi interview with ICANA, he said Iran has a history of peaceful relations with other countries, adding, “Today, Mongolia and Iran are keen to boost the level of their foreign relations.”

He said many Iranian companies are investing in Mongolia and vice versa, which means “the two states have constructive economic relations.”

The Mongolian official had travelled to Iran heading a delegation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Hassan Rouhani.
