Iran Condemns Suicide Blasts in Nigeria

In a statement on Wednesday, Qassemi condemned the deadly explosion in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, and expressed sympathy with the bereaved families of the victims.

“The continuation and exacerbation of terrorist attacks in different parts of the world shows that, despite the efforts and moves made at the international level, the world community has a long way to go in full eradication of the ominous phenomenon,” Qassemi noted.

He also highlighted the necessary of using all national, regional, and global capacities to cleanse the world of terrorism.

A female suicide bomber blew herself up and killed at least 27 others at a market in northeast Nigeria on Tuesday, in an attack bearing the hallmark of Boko Haram.

Two more suicide bombers detonated their devices at the gates to a nearby refugee camp, wounding many people, an emergency services official said.

The regional Emergency Agency said 45 people were “critically injured”. The death toll could be as high as 30.

In all, at least 83 people were wounded in the three explosions near the city of Maiduguri, the epicentre of the long-running conflict between government forces and Boko Haram.

Iran’s Annual Handicrafts Exports Stand at $250m

“At the moment, the country’s handicrafts exports have tripled, and even inside the country there is a growing interest in handicrafts given the measures adopted,” said Bahman Namvar, a top handicrafts official.

“The handicrafts of every country are the first representation of that country’s culture for tourists, and, hence, are very important,” he added, according to a Farsi report by the Mehr News Agency.

He said roughly ten percent of the turnover in the country’s handicrafts sector is associated with exhibitions, which not only serve as a forum for economic activity, but also serve as an opportunity to make the public familiar with handicrafts.

He said the handicrafts sector can bring in money and create jobs.

“Official figures suggest the country’s handicrafts exports stand at $250 million annually. With just $1 million in the handicrafts sector, we can create ten times as many jobs as we can with one million petro-dollars,” he said.

“Handicrafts have a very high added value, and this industry does not need contribution by foreign companies,” he said.

He said Iran has the most diverse handicrafts in the world, adding, “We should use handicrafts in our homes to promote an Islamic-Iranian lifestyle. We should keep this culture and cultural diversity alive.”

Riyadh Testing Reactions to Possible Détente with Iran

A Saudi Arabian journalist, close to Al Saud family, has implied that Riyadh will soon have close and strong ties with Tehran and Baghdad, as the two states are useful neighbours of his country.

The Arabi21 news website has reported that the liberal Saudi journalist and publisher, Othman al-Omeir, who is known for having close relations with the ruling Al Saud family, has implicitly said in a Twitter post that his country will soon have close and strong ties with Iran and Iraq as they are Saudi Arabia’s useful neighbours.

Riyadh Testing Reactions to Possible Détente with IranAccording to a Farsi report by the Shafaqna News Agency (Shiite International News Agency), the tweet posted on Monday (August 14) by al-Omeir reads: “There is a neighbour which is useful and a neighbour which is useless; I certify that Iran and Iraq are useful neighbours.”

In his post, al-Omeir also stressed that his remarks have been made following the recent improvements in relations between his country and the other two Middle Eastern states which have helped reduce tensions and differences among them.

Experts maintain that al-Omeir’s statements are made to assess Saudi people’s reaction to future probable developments in relations among Tehran, Riyadh and Baghdad, which may lead to the creation of new coalitions between them.

Iran Produces Sheets for Direct Reduction Pipes

“By changing the composition of its products, the Mobarakeh Steel Company has managed to produce sheets used in pipes for direct reduction,” Shahrokh Pour-Mostadam, a metallurgy expert, was quoted by IMNA as saying.

He said the Mobarakeh Still Company has added around half a percent of molybdenum to iron during the process of melting as the substance increases iron’s durability in high temperatures and boosts its resistance to corrosion.

Moreover, he added, the temperature was carefully controlled in producing hot iron rolls and the standard mechanical properties were controlled.

As a result, the expert added, they managed to produce the sheets required by Iranian factories.

He said the sheets measure up to ASTM standards and are a kind of alloy steel containing molybdenum.

According to the official, Iran did not have the knowhow to produce this kind of sheets, but has now developed the technology, which saves the nation huge sums of foreign currency.

He said the sheets produced at the Mobarakeh Steel Company have high quality and are on a par with similar products produced overseas.

Iran Starts Construction of Its First University in Iraq

The Iranian university will house five faculties, including experimental sciences, humanities and Islamic sciences, Abdollah Hassani, the head of university’s board of trustees and vice chancellor for administrative and financial affairs, was quoted as saying by IRNA.

Faculties of literature, jurisprudence and law will be set up in the first stage of the project, he said.

Hassani further noted the university will be constructed in an area of 22,500 square metres and is expected to host 3,000 students initially.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Cultural Office in Iraq was quoted as saying that the two neighbouring states have so far signed over 50 scientific and academic memoranda of understanding and over 3,000 Iraqi students are studying in Iranian universities.

‘Iran Should Establish Genetic Data Bank for Inmates’

Genetic

Iranian legislator Farhad Tajari has, in a Farsi interview with ICANA, weighed in on the necessity of diagnosing the diseases of inmate using a genetic data bank.

He said the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization intends to issue genetic cards for all people, but more specifically, the head of the Prisons Organization has spoken of the establishment of a genetic bank for inmates.

“At the moment, determining the blood groups of prisoners as well as certain other things is done on a limited scale, but inmates have had no genetic document that would contain formation on dangerous diseases; so, the establishment of a genetic data bank for inmates will play a key role in solving some of the problems at jails,” he said.

Using a genetic data bank, he said, one can find access to a criminal’s clinical background.

“There have been cases where somebody else has disguised himself as the real criminal and come to prison; of course, this problem can be solved through fingerprinting. However, the establishment of a person’s identity and identifying the background of dangerous diseases would be possible only through the creation of a genetic data bank,” he said.

The MP noted that such a data bank would be very important as far as a prisoner’s health and treatment are concerned.

Ukraine Bridge for Export of Iran’s Petchem Products

Marzieh Shahdaei made the statement on the sidelines of a meeting with Sergei Burdiliak, the Ukrainian ambassador to Iran, Shana reported on Monday.

The two sides discussed Ukraine’s potential as a marketing hub for Iran’s petrochemical products as well as transfer of technology.

“Iran can sell petrochemicals to European markets under swap operations or embark on exports directly through Ukraine,” Shahdaei said.

“Iran’s petrochemical exports to East Europe have jumped by 70% in the first half of the year compared with the same period of previous year,” she added, without providing details.

The NPC chief noted that according to the Ukrainian ambassador, bilateral trade ties, particularly in the petrochemical sector, have significantly increased following the lifting of sanctions. Shahdaei said Ukraine has three oil refineries that use Russian feedstock, but those facilities are poised to use Iranian crude oil.

Ukraine reportedly purchased $236,000 worth of crude oil from Iran in June but the purchase rose to $5.4 million in July, which saw the East European country importing 152,655 tons of oil in total, according to Press TV, citing Ukraine’s State Fiscal Service.

Iran’s crude oil exports to European Union countries in the first four months of the year reached 9.31 million tons, more than six times higher than those in the corresponding period last year.

That is equivalent to a total of 66.5 million barrels, or nearly 560,000 barrels per day, Tasnim News Agency reported last month, citing Eurostat, the official news portal of the European Commission.

The 28-nation bloc took in 1.37 million tons of oil in January-April 2016. The higher export is largely attributed to the lifting of international restrictions against Iran, which allowed the OPEC member to recoup the lost ground in the global crude market.

Iran Condemns Burkina Faso Terrorist Attacks

Burkina Faso Terrorist Attacks

In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the Burkina Faso attacks and said such ‘inhumane’ and ‘violent’ crimes committed by extremist groups against innocent people have nothing to do with religious teachings, particularly those of Islam which enjoys originals principles of humanity, mercy, and peace-seeking.

“Today, terrorism is a global problem, and its eradication needs the resolve and will of all countries,” he added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the victims of the ominous phenomenon and one of the most serious countries fighting against terrorism in the region with a firm resolve, has made constructive and remarkable efforts in this regard,” Qassemi went on to say.

He also expressed Tehran’s preparedness to cooperate with other countries and transfer its experiences in fight against terror.

Gunmen shot dead 18 people and injured others at a cafe in the centre of the Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou, according to the West African country’s government.

At least eight foreigners and seven locals were among those killed in Sunday’s evening attack on the Aziz Istanbul cafe, the government added.

The gunmen, thought to be extremists, fired on customers on the terrace before making their way inside.

Two attackers were killed in a siege which lasted into the morning.
