Hashemi Rafsanjani Elected as Head of Tehran City Council

In an unofficial session on Saturday, all members-elect of the Iranian capital’s city council voted for the presidency of Hashemi Rafsanjani, who was the only candidate for the post.

Morteza Alviri and Ahmad Masjed-Jamei, two other senior members of the Council, earlier withdrew from running for the post in favour of Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Alviri later noted that his withdrawal was a move to increase the unity of the all-reformist Council.

The new City Council, which will start its work on August 23, earlier elected Mohammad-Ali Najafi, a senior reformist and former education and science minister, as the new mayor of Tehran, replacing the conservative Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.

The top story today was the ISIS terrorist attack on Barcelona, Spain, which claimed at least 14 lives and wounded several others. The attack was strongly condemned by Iran’s foreign ministry.

Another top story was the anniversary of the 1953 US-backed coup in Iran, which led to the overthrow of democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.

The hunger strike of Mahdi Karroubi, one of the two Iranian opposition leaders under house arrest, and President Hassan Rouhani’s order for addressing his demands also received great coverage.

Qatar Worried about Safety of Citizens in Saudi Arabia

Speaking in a visit to Norway, the Qatari FM noted that Saudi authorities had yet to respond to queries from the Qatari Ministry of Islamic Affairs regarding the security of Qatari citizens during Hajj.

“The level of tension between the two nations, the language and the tone of the Saudi media spreading hatred against Qatari people represents a great concern for us,” he told a news conference, as reported by Reuters.

“Those people crossing the border right now are under the responsibility of the Saudi authorities for their security and safety,” he said, adding that “more than 100” citizens had crossed since the border was reopened.

US Officials’ Anti-Iran Stances to Destablise Mideast: Envoy

In a Friday statement, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo stressed that the August 15 statement by US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley on Iran “is devoid of any shred of truth.”

Haley claimed Tuesday that Iran should not be allowed “to use the nuclear deal to hold the world hostage,” adding that the nuclear agreement with the P5+1 group of countries must not become “too big to fail.”

Here is the full statement made by Khoshroo:

The 15th August press statement by the US Ambassador to the UN on Iran is devoid of any shred of truth. The rhetoric and baseless accusations against Iran contained therein represent the latest examples of a series of provocative words, outright threats and irresponsible actions from some senior officials of the US administration in demonizing Iran and undermining the JCPOA inconsistent with the US commitments under paragraph 28 of the nuclear deal.

Instead of distorting the recent remarks of President Rouhani, the US Ambassador should heed the lessons of history and counsel some of the US administration officials to avoid repeating past mistakes. President Rouhani, in his remarks on 15 August, stressed that “Iran lives up to its JCPOA commitments and would proportionately respond to any violation of the JCPOA by other participants. Those who attempt to revert to language of sanction and threat, are prisoners of their past delusions, and by fearmongering and antagonizing they would only deprive themselves from the benefits of peace.”

The US blunders and military interventions in the Middle East during the last two decades have destabilized the region and fuelled violent extremism, terrorism and tensions. The hard-line and parochial positions adopted by certain senior US officials against Iran could further exacerbate instability in the region. Iran as a stabilizing force in the region is acting responsibly in eradicating Daesh (also known as ISIS) in Syria and Iraq and remains determined to seek a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Middle East free from extremism, terrorism, extra-regional interventions and weapons of mass destruction. Iran stands ready to continue cooperation with the regional States to achieve the shared goals and to address the existing regional challenges.

Trump Quick to Insult Islam, Hesitant to Condemn Racist Terror: Iran

“Quick to insult Islam but hesitant to condemn racist terror at home,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a Saturday tweet.

Trump Quick to Insult Islam, Hesitant to Condemn Racist Terror: IranThe Iranian top diplomat was apparently referring to Trump’s anti-Islam remarks immediately after the ISIS attack on Barcelona, while he had for a couple of days refused to condemn the recent racist terrorism in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Terror in name of race or religion is plain terror and represents neither,” Zarif went on to say in his Twitter message.

New Drug Law to Save Lives of Many Iranians on Death Row

New Drug Law to Save Lives of Many Iranians on Death Row

Earlier this week, the Iranian Parliament passed a bill to lift the death penalty for those carrying less than 50 kilograms of traditional drugs (opium, etc.) or 2 kilograms of chemical or industrial drugs (morphine, etc.). The bill still needs to be ratified by the Guardian Council to be signed into law.

In a Farsi interview with ICANA, Iranian parliamentarian Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi referred to the legislation, saying that the main focus of the legal reforms made unanimously by the Iranian lawmakers is on dealing with the social plight of drug trafficking in the country.

He went on saying that the drug problem along with international sanctions as well as growing unemployment and other social issues have put Iran in a serious social trouble.

The Iranian lawmaker noted that the fight against drug trafficking in Iran has not yet yielded a tangible result over the past four decades, adding making some reforms in the related law seemed inevitable.

“Now with the reforms made, the drug traffickers are no longer immune to the punishments set in the law,” he noted.

Rahimi Jahanabadi also said the mentioned reforms have regulated death penalties for drug traffickers in the border areas which are suffering from unemployment and poverty.

The member of Iran’s parliament added that with the recent reforms, the leading drug traffickers and ringleaders will be given death penalty but those violators who have turned to the business due to poverty and unemployment would be given a life sentence.

His remarks came a few days after Hassan Norouzi, another lawmaker, declared that 5,300 Iranians are on death row for carrying illicit drugs. The new law may save the majority of these people.

Rahimi Jahanabadi further praised the reforms as one of the lasting achievements of the tenth parliament and said the idea of the reforms has been discussed in depth by the lawmakers as well as representatives of the judiciary and other related organizations.

“With the new reforms, more than 90 percent of the drug traffickers who had been sentenced to death would have the chance to return to life,” he said.

The lawmaker said the death penalty has its own social plight pushing the families of the violators to chaos in their social life, and the new reforms would provide them with a chance to find their appropriate way in life.

Rahimi Jahanabadi also noted that Iran is the only Islamic state in the region and the Iranians must avoid any measure which may tarnish its image.

“Unfortunately, fighting drug trafficking over the past years has not been effective enough, and has tarnished the image of our country in the region,” he added.

The member of the Judicial and Legal Commission of Iran’s Parliament went on saying that recent reforms also oblige the government to create jobs in the border region with the aim of eradicating poverty there.

“Meanwhile, the government should put more efforts into establishing a lasting development in the regions,” he said, adding that legal reform is just one part of fight against drug trafficking.

He also noted that the drug problem in Iran has been growing since the Islamic Revolution mainly due to the massive unrest in Afghanistan and opium production growth in the war-torn country.

Tehran to Host World’s Largest Handmade Carpet Expo

carpet

The head of Iran National Carpet Centre (INCC), Hamid Kargar, says the Iranian capital, Tehran, will play host to the 26th Iran Handmade Carpet Exhibition – the biggest of its kind worldwide – during August 23-29, which is expected to be attended by 730 firms from across the country.

According to a Farsi report by the Ettelaat daily newspaper, the expo will be held in Tehran International Permanent Fairground.

Kargar added the exhibition will be held in 14 halls in an area extending over 30,000 square metres.

He said a hall will be allocated to specialized entrepreneurs, adding they will be provided with free pavilions in Hall No. 5.

“[A number of] foreign traders who are among the customers of handwoven Iranian carpets, particularly those form Iran’s export targets, have been identified and invited to visit the expo.”

He put the number of foreign traders at 91, of which 38 are Iranian carpet merchants living abroad and 14 are Americans.

The INCC chief said concurrent with the exhibition, the Seventh Top Carpet Exhibition and Festival will be held in Tehran with the aim of creating new intricate carpet patterns and improving the process of carpet production.

He added the fest’s slogan is “Modernization and Maintaining the Market While Focusing on Originality of Iranian Carpet.”

Kargar said rugs made by Iran’s nomads as well as antique and modern carpets will be pitted against each other in the festival, adding those judged as top works will be put on display in a hall.

“A carpet is currently being woven in Iran based on a speech by [Iranian President] Hassan Rouhani in the United Nations which will be unveiled during the expo. The carpet will be presented as a gift to one of the international institutes after its weaving is completed.”

He said different methods for decorating spaces with handwoven Iranian carpets will also be presented to the visitors in the exhibition in cooperation with the INCC and the National Council of Furniture and Decoration and Correlated Industries.

Kargar noted that to increase the adaptability of handwoven Iranian carpet, a book titled “Farsh-e Man – The Aesthetics of Persian Carpet” will be unveiled in hall No. 5.

In addition, he said, a number of workshops will be held during the six-day exhibition, in the morning and afternoon, to familiarise visitors with the designing and production processes of Iranian carpets in different parts of the country.

The INCC head added, “Moreover, the processes involved in the making of a handwoven carpet such as designing, restoration and washing will be shown to visitors in this expo.”

Tehran to Host World’s Largest Handmade Carpet Expo1Iran Resumes Carpet Exports to US

“Following the going into effect of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) [on January 16, 2016], Iran resumed carpet exports to the US. During 2010-2016, Iran failed to directly export any carpet to the US due to [Western] sanctions. This was while in 2009, the US was the target of over 16 percent, more than $80 million worth, of Iran’s carpet exports. After the implementation of the JCPOA, Iran exported its first carpet collection to the US from Germany.”

He added in 2016, Iran’s overseas sales of carpet amounted to $365 million, of which $95 million were sold to the US.

“We expect that Iran’s carpet exports to the US would increase again after a six-year hiatus. This, however, requires continuous monitoring of the activities of our rivals, particularly India and Pakistan, in international carpet markets. It is also important to screen the background of our present-day customers in the market. We are also required to make optimum use of means of advertisement and establish connection with foreign traders.”

He said according to the figures released by Iran’s Customs Administration, the country’s carpet exports reached $89 million during March 21-July 22, 2017, indicating an increase of more than 3.7 percent compared to the figure for the same period of time last year.

1m People Weaving Carpets in Iran

Kargar added establishing a carpet start-up is also on the INCC’s agenda.

“According to INCC statistics, the population of Iran’s carpet weavers stands at 1 million, of which 700,000 do the job as full-time workers and the rest are part-time employees.

He dismissed the allegations that handwoven Iranian carpets are expensive, noting such carpets have considerable price diversity.

Handwoven carpets made by Iran’s nomads are both very beautiful and precious and sold at reasonable prices.

Iran Vehemently Condemns Barcelona Terrorist Attacks

“Following the back-to-back defeats of extremist terrorists in the regional battles, these murderers have put the expansion of their blind terrorist operations across the world at the top of their agenda,” Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Qassemi said in a statement on Friday, adding that the killing of innocent and ordinary people is among their nasty goals.

The spokesperson further said the current unbridled terrorism has turned into a global problem and added, “Today, the ISIS’ blind terrorism has trespassed all geographical and ideological borders and all people across the world, from the Middle East to Africa and from the Far East to Europe, are prone to their inhumane and dirty attacks.”

Stressing that global problems have global solutions, Qassemi noted, “Today no country, even those which directly or indirectly support terrorists, is immune to the global threat and nasty plight of terrorism.”

“It seems it is the time for all peace-seeking countries as well as those countries which have put fighting terrorism high on their agenda to step into the fray with a deep belief and responsibility to establish a global alliance against violence, insecurity and terror.”

He went on saying that regardless of their differences, the countries must put their focus with honesty and determination on eradicating these nasty murderers who trade in death and hatred and pose the largest threat to the international security.

“In this holy war, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate with the international community against the terrorists,” he said, adding as one of the main victims of terrorism, Tehran has been fighting terrorism and extremism on the front line and paid a hefty price so far.

Iran’s First Glass Expo to Be Held in Tehran Next Week

The participants of the first edition of International Exhibition of Glass and Related Industries are expected to put their latest achievements and products on display next week.

According to a Farsi report by IRIB, the exhibition will be held in Tehran International Permanent Fairground.

Among the items to be showcased at the expo are glass production machines, equipment and production lines, methods and machineries to process raw materials, different kinds of constructional, façade, car and anti-bullet glass as well as door and window and items pertaining to other related industries.

Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization has issued the permit for holding the exhibition which will be organized in cooperation with Germany’s Glasstec – the world’s leading trade fair for the glass industry and its suppliers – as well as Iranian associations for glass producers in an area spanning over 7,500 square metres.

In addition to domestic and foreign glass production companies, the exposition will be attended by Renewable Energy Organization of Iran, Iran’s Road, Housing and Development Research Centre, Iran’s Nanotechnology Initiative Council as well as representatives from France, Italy, Germany and China.

Several foreign and domestic trade, economic, industrial and investment companies are expected to visit the expo and hold negotiations with the representatives of the participating companies.

A number of training workshops, attended by Iranian industrialists, university professors, related officials and researchers are also scheduled to be held on the sidelines of the exhibition.

Among the aims of the expo are providing domestic firms involved in glass production industry with the opportunity to gain knowledge about the most modern products and advancements in this field and exchange information with their foreign counterparts about the latest technologies, products and achievements in the industry, creating a direct link between producers and consumers and preparing the ground for cooperation between the participants in the field of investment, generating jobs, marketing and trade promotion.

The exhibition will be open to visitors every day from 10 am to 6 pm.

Commenting on the expo, Fardad Maghanti, the head of the HQ responsible for holding the exhibition, said glass is mainly used in Iran in the building construction industry.

He noted that glass production is among the most important industries in Iran, adding industrial production of glass in the country began in 1996.

Stressing that glass production is highly economical in Iran, he said raw materials for this purpose are entirely available in the country which has increased the importance of paying greater attention to expansion of the industry.

He listed silica, sodium carbonate, magnesium oxide, lime and dolomite as the raw materials used for glass production, saying all of them are easily available in Iran at cheap prices, which is the primary and most important advantage of the industry in the country.

Maghanti said in the early years after the victory of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, the country met more than 70 percent of the domestic need to glass through imports.

“However, by setting up a number of glass production factories in Iran in the 90s, the country achieved self-sufficiency in this industry.”

Currently, 10 big companies in Iran produce 450,000 square metres of glass per day of which 40 percent are exported to the Persian Gulf littoral states, the Central Asian countries and even Europe. The remaining 60 percent meet the domestic need.

Iranian Charity Supporting Thousands of Christians

Iranian Charity Supporting Thousands of Christians

Head of Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation, Seyyed Parviz Fattah, says in addition to offering services to the poor Shiite and Sunni people, the foundation also provides support for thousands of poor Christians living in the country

According to a Farsi report by the Tasnim News Agency, he said the organization provides supports for all poor people from all walks of life in Iran regardless of their religion.

The IKRF is not affiliated with a certain political party or ethnicity or even religion, he went on to say.

“In the holy book of Muslims, no adjective has been used before the words orphans, the poor or the deprived men. The Holy Quran recommends Muslims to meet the needs of the poor without any condition. Even in our prayers, we are recommended to support all poor people regardless of their religions and nationalities. This is the direct recommendation of Islam to all Muslims and we have tried to move in this direction,” he said.

Fattah also added that the services offered to the Sunnis in Iran are similar to those offered to the Shiites and said even despite the fact that the Sunnis’ interpretations of religious support is different from those of the Shiites, the foundation provides support for them within their interpretations.

He referred to the public support for the poor regardless of their religions and said today the Shiites of Iran provide support for the Sunni orphans.

“Given the growing public support, we don’t have any orphan who is not supported by a patron or even if there is any, the number is very low,” he added.

Fattah said the Sunni population of Iran have trust in the foundation and said the amount of Zakat (a form of religious obligation or tax) paid by the Sunnis are more than those paid by the Shiites.
