Iran President Urges Zarif to Foil US Attempts to Scrap JCPOA

Addressing the parliament on Sunday, President Rouhani said Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who has been chosen to assume the office for the second term, will have a heavy duty to protect the JCPOA and not let the US succeed in implementing its obstructive plots.

The real Iranian heroes are those trying to maintain the nuclear deal and protect it against hostile attempts by the US, Israel and some minor countries in the region, the president added.

He also hailed the steps Iran has taken since the JCPOA was achieved, saying anti-Iran sanctions have been shattered and “locks have been unlocked.”

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) signed the JCPOA in July 2015. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.

Earlier this month, Zarif slammed the US for its lack of commitment to the nuclear deal, stressing that Iran is pursuing the implementation of the deal with “seriousness”.

American Tourists Interested in Visiting Iran despite Warnings

Last week, the US State Department once again warned the American citizens against visiting Iran. Despite the warning, Head of Iranian Tour Operators’ Society, Ebrahim Pourfaraj, says the flow of American tourist to Iran has not stopped.

“Iran’s Foreign Ministry continues to issue visas for American tourists,” he added.

Pourfaraj went on saying that despite the US government’s warnings, the number of American tourists who visited Iran this year is not lower than that of the previous year.

Earlier, the US government decided to impose ban on the Iranians travelling to the US on the one hand and warned the American citizens against traveling to Iran.

In an interview with the Hamshahri newspaper, Maricar Donato, an American tour guide who has travelled to Iran from Washington, said Iran is a safe country.

“Iranians give a warm welcome to foreign tourists including Americans,” she said. Donato also called on the foreign tourists to not take seriously the clichés about Iran in the western media and visit the country themselves.

Paula Thomson, another American tour guide from New York who was visiting Iran for the first time, also told Hamshahri that visiting the country is very exciting.

Unlike what the US government claims, she said, Iran is a safe country. According to Thomson, before visiting Iran, many Americans had called on him to take them to Iran as tourists.

Despite the American tour guides’ statements about security in Iran for foreign tourists as well as the Iranians’ hospitality, the US government has once again warned its citizens against travelling to Iran.

The head of Iranian Tour Operators’ Society said despite the US government’s threats and its measures which stand in stark violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the American tourists continue to visit Iran and as things stand, Washington’s warnings have not hampered the flow of travels to Iran.

Pourfaraj went on saying that so far no tourism company has cancelled its requests to visit Iran. “Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has accepted the American tourists’ applications to visit Iran.”

‘Kupal’ directed by Kazem Mollaei, ‘Inversion’ by Behnam Behzadi and ‘Lantouri’ by Reza Dormishian have been accepted in the main competition section, Mehr News Agency reported.

The 10-day festival will show over 25 feature-length films from 15 countries including India, Japan, China, Turkey, Lebanon, South Korea, Iraq, Philippines, and Iran.

Tehran Denies Arrest of Iranian Suicide Bomber in Afghanistan

Officials at the Iranian embassy in Kabul have rejected the claim that security forces have apprehended an Iranian suicide bomber in Afghanistan’s Nimruz province.

A press release by the Iranian embassy suggests that the Afghan government has, so far, presented no evidence and documents to prove the claim.

The Nimruz police chief had told media two days earlier that an Iranian suicide bomber had been arrested while attacking a security checkpoint in the province.

The police chief claimed the detained individual was an Iranian national, and that one of those killed in the attack on the checkpoint was his cousin.

However, the Iranian embassy says it still cannot confirm the news as Kabul has presented no document that would prove the individual is an Iranian.

The embassy’s press release has urged Afghan authorities to submit any relevant documents for further consideration.

“Of course, ISIS-linked elements have likely managed to enter Iran, but, given Iran’s measures and determination to fight terrorism, they cannot operate in Iran,” the press release reads.

As stipulated in the press release, Iran and Afghanistan have around 1,000 kilometres of common border across which some of the Afghan refugees residing in Iran travel illegally. So, there is a possibility that ISIS-linked elements cross the border to join ISIS in Afghanistan.

According to the embassy, five Iran-Afghanistan joint commissions are working together to forge closer mutual cooperation on security, border issues and fighting terrorism, and that the Iranian government hopes Tehran-Kabul security and border cooperation will make it possible to firmly combat terrorism on both sides of the common border.

Iraq Starts Operation to Liberate Tal Afar from ISIS

Iraqi Army fight against ISIS

Six weeks after Iraq’s second-largest city Mosul was declared liberated, the Iraqi PM announced that the battle to oust ISIS from Tal Afar, 60 kilometres west of Mosul, has been officially started, according to Arab media reports.

Media preview

Iraq’s official military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasoul told reporters on Friday that the fight will involve the Iraqi Army, counter-terrorism services (CTS), police and Hashd al-Shaabi popular forces (PMUs).

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) says thousands of pro-government fighters are going to participate in the operation to retake Tal Afar.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Lebanon-based Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network on Friday, Ahmed al-Asadi said 20,000 volunteer forces, commonly known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha’abi, will take part in the battle for Tal Afar.

“We have information about the presence of foreigners within ISIS ranks in Tal Afar, but we do not know their identity,” Asadi pointed out.

He noted that the operation to liberate Tal Afar will not take long, but rather several weeks.

Opposition Leader’s Hunger Strike Widely Covered in Iranian Papers

Karroubi, who has been under house arrest in the past six years for his role in the unrest following the 2009 presidential election in Iran, stopped eating and drinking on Wednesday morning and was taken to hospital on Thursday due to high blood pressure.

The 79-year-old reformist cleric reportedly declared he will not resume eating until intelligence agents are removed from his home, and a public trial is scheduled for him.

After an order by President Hassan Rouhani, Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi and a deputy intelligence minister met the opposition leader on Thursday and secured promises that convinced him to end the hunger strike.

Surprisingly, the issue was widely covered in the front pages of both conservative and reformist newspapers on Saturday.

The reformist daily Etemad covered the issue using the headline “Rouhani’s Special Order: Health, Intelligence Ministries Urged to Deal with Opposition Leader’s Hunger Strike”.

The government-run Iran newspaper referred to the end of Karroubi’s hunger strike after Rouhani’s orders.

The Hamdeli newspaper also reported the hope expressed by various religious and political figures about the end of the opposition leaders’ house arrest.

The reformist Seda-ye Eslahat newspaper quoted Seyyed Hadi Khamenei, the younger reformist brother of Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as saying that the end of the house arrest would increase the reputation of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

The Setareh Sobh newspaper quoted the First Vice-Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Massoud Pezeshkian as saying that the continuation of the opposition leaders’ house arrest will not be in Iran’s interest.

It also referred to the Parliament’s Second Vice-Speaker Ali Motahari’s remarks, where he urged the country’s officials to prepare the grounds for Karroubi’s trial.

Pezeshkian’s remarks were also covered by Bahar, which used the headline “Issue of House Arrest Can Be Resolved through Interaction between Leaders.”

Bahar also dedicated its editorial to the issue of the opposition leaders’ house arrest, saying there is a legal solution to the problem.

Meanwhile, the conservative paper Javan criticized the fuss made about the hunger strike, and described it as a small one-day strike. It also released an editorial on the issue titled ‘Ending House Arrest: One Way, Two Results’, arguing that the end of house arrest will not mean the release of the two opposition figures; it rather will lead to their trial and a possible death penalty for them.

Javan advised reformists not to drag the Establishment into the execution of the two figures, and let them stay under the house arrest.

The other major conservative paper Kayhan also published Hossein Shariatmadari’s interview with Fars about Karroubi’s hunger strike. In this interview, Shariatmadari, the chief of Kayhan, described the strike as a plot hatched to fabricate documents for anti-Iran human rights sanctions imposed by the US.

He further described Karroubi as an individual with revolutionary backgrounds, and accused reformists of taking advantage of him to protect the other opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi and the former president Seyyed Mohammad Khatami during the post-election ‘sedition’ in 2009.

Iranian Firm in Talks with KIA Motors for Car Parts Export

Artash Composite, a knowledge-based company producing resistance welding electrodes as one of the items used by auto makers, is trying to offer the product on international markets.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, the move is in line with Iran’s plan to expand the market for its nano-products in the automobile manufacturing sector.

The company has been producing resistance welding electrodes since 2011, meeting a considerable part of the needs of auto giant Iran Khodro Company (IKCO).

Resistance welding electrode is the most frequently used item in auto manufacturing and home appliances industries. More than 95% of vehicles’ body parts are produced using

resistance welding electrodes.

Artash Composite is now holding talks with South Korea’s Kia Motors to supply the car maker with resistance welding electrodes, and has already sent 150 kilograms of the product to the Obara Corporation for testing.
