Shams-ol-Emareh; 150-Year-Old Palace in Heart of Tehran

Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, inspired in one of his foreign visits by the multi-storey buildings he observed there, ordered Doostali Khan Nezam od-Dowleh (Moayer al-Mamalek) to build the palace, whose construction finished in 1867.

Shams-ol-Emareh, which was well planned and adorned with various decorations such as stucco, mirror works, tile works, and murals, is one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Tehran.

Here are Tasnim’s photos of the palace, which is located in the eastern section of Golestan palace:

12-Metre-Long Whale Washes Up Dead on Iranian Coast

Saman Qassemi, the head of Bandar Lengeh Department of Environment, said the 12-metre-long and 10-tonne Bryde’s whale was found stranded on Saturday, August 19.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, these whales can swim as fast as 25 kilometres per hour and as deep as 300 metres down the sea.

Qassemi says they are usually found worldwide in warm temperate and tropical waters, including the Persian Gulf, and Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans.

They are usually killed after being hit by fishing instruments and vessels, he went on to say.

App Store Once Again Removes Iranian Apps

The American company has removed applications of several online businesses including Delion (food delivery service), DigiKala (Amazon-like retailer), AloPeyk (parcel delivery service), Takhfifan (group buying website), and Alibaba (online travel agency).

In the early hours of August 19, CEOs of the several local businesses received an email from Apple, which reads as follows:

“We are unable to include your app on the App Store. Under the US sanctions regulations, the App Store cannot host, distribute, or do business with apps or developers connected to certain US embargoed countries.”

The statement further adds “This area of law is complex and constantly changing. If the existing restrictions shift, we encourage you to resubmit your app for inclusion on the App Store.”

Independent observers are of the strong opinion that Apple is randomly targeting Iranian startups and online applications.

CEO and founder of Delion, Mahdi Taghizade told Financial Tribune “There is no pattern to Apple’s new move.

“While Delion and several other applications have been removed, hundreds of other Iranian apps are still available on App Store.”

Not all businesses received the written message from Apple. Deputy director of Digikala, Firooz Aghazadeh, told the Tribune that he received a phone call from the American firm.

Alopeyk, one of Iran’s leading parcel delivery services, received a similar message midnight on August 19. The company’s CEO and founder Mehdi Nayebi immediately contacted Apple. Again the US company refused to provide further details.

Nayebi said “When I inquired why only some Iranian apps have been targeted while hundreds (including some internationally known names) are still available on App Store, the Apple operator did not respond.”

This is not the first time that Apple has removed Iranian apps from App Store. None of the previous incidents were permanent and after a while the applications were again available on App Store a few days later.

In January, Apple began removing several applications from its store including DigiKala and the Shaparak payment system app. Prior to that in previous years most Iranian apps were blocked from being loaded on to the service.

The random targeting of startups and developers have left Iranian application companies completely bemused.

Social media users on Twitter are also watching the strange and unacceptable ways of the American tech giant, with several other application developers fearing their hard work may be pulled off the iOS store without notice.

One user going by the handle IRC Feeds, messaged Apple directly, saying “Are you pulling apps from iOS store because they are based in Iran? A dev[eloper] I know in Iran is concerned.”

The latest move by Apple comes on the heels of a recent point made by President Hassan Rouhani and the US’ parvenu ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley.

On August 16, Haley said Iran must be held responsible for “its missile launches, support for terrorism, disregard for human rights, and violations of UN Security Council resolutions.”

Haley was responding to Hassan Rouhani, who said earlier on Tuesday that Iran could abandon its nuclear agreement with world powers “within hours” if the US imposes any more new sanctions.

Iran President Urges Zarif to Foil US Attempts to Scrap JCPOA

Addressing the parliament on Sunday, President Rouhani said Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who has been chosen to assume the office for the second term, will have a heavy duty to protect the JCPOA and not let the US succeed in implementing its obstructive plots.

The real Iranian heroes are those trying to maintain the nuclear deal and protect it against hostile attempts by the US, Israel and some minor countries in the region, the president added.

He also hailed the steps Iran has taken since the JCPOA was achieved, saying anti-Iran sanctions have been shattered and “locks have been unlocked.”

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) signed the JCPOA in July 2015. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.

Earlier this month, Zarif slammed the US for its lack of commitment to the nuclear deal, stressing that Iran is pursuing the implementation of the deal with “seriousness”.

American Tourists Interested in Visiting Iran despite Warnings

Last week, the US State Department once again warned the American citizens against visiting Iran. Despite the warning, Head of Iranian Tour Operators’ Society, Ebrahim Pourfaraj, says the flow of American tourist to Iran has not stopped.

“Iran’s Foreign Ministry continues to issue visas for American tourists,” he added.

Pourfaraj went on saying that despite the US government’s warnings, the number of American tourists who visited Iran this year is not lower than that of the previous year.

Earlier, the US government decided to impose ban on the Iranians travelling to the US on the one hand and warned the American citizens against traveling to Iran.

In an interview with the Hamshahri newspaper, Maricar Donato, an American tour guide who has travelled to Iran from Washington, said Iran is a safe country.

“Iranians give a warm welcome to foreign tourists including Americans,” she said. Donato also called on the foreign tourists to not take seriously the clichés about Iran in the western media and visit the country themselves.

Paula Thomson, another American tour guide from New York who was visiting Iran for the first time, also told Hamshahri that visiting the country is very exciting.

Unlike what the US government claims, she said, Iran is a safe country. According to Thomson, before visiting Iran, many Americans had called on him to take them to Iran as tourists.

Despite the American tour guides’ statements about security in Iran for foreign tourists as well as the Iranians’ hospitality, the US government has once again warned its citizens against travelling to Iran.

The head of Iranian Tour Operators’ Society said despite the US government’s threats and its measures which stand in stark violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the American tourists continue to visit Iran and as things stand, Washington’s warnings have not hampered the flow of travels to Iran.

Pourfaraj went on saying that so far no tourism company has cancelled its requests to visit Iran. “Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has accepted the American tourists’ applications to visit Iran.”

3 Iranian Films to Compete in American Film Festival

‘Kupal’ directed by Kazem Mollaei, ‘Inversion’ by Behnam Behzadi and ‘Lantouri’ by Reza Dormishian have been accepted in the main competition section, Mehr News Agency reported.

The 10-day festival will show over 25 feature-length films from 15 countries including India, Japan, China, Turkey, Lebanon, South Korea, Iraq, Philippines, and Iran.

‘Kupal’ is the story of a hunter and taxidermist who accidentally traps himself in his basement. With little food and no water, Ahmad Kupal must survive using creative and desperate means.

‘Inversion’ centers around a young woman who decides to take charge and find ways to better express herself in a smog-filled Tehran.

‘Lantouri’ is a social drama about a street gang in Tehran that robs people in broad daylight.

All the three movies have attended several international festivals and won awards.

Tehran Denies Arrest of Iranian Suicide Bomber in Afghanistan

Officials at the Iranian embassy in Kabul have rejected the claim that security forces have apprehended an Iranian suicide bomber in Afghanistan’s Nimruz province.

A press release by the Iranian embassy suggests that the Afghan government has, so far, presented no evidence and documents to prove the claim.

The Nimruz police chief had told media two days earlier that an Iranian suicide bomber had been arrested while attacking a security checkpoint in the province.

The police chief claimed the detained individual was an Iranian national, and that one of those killed in the attack on the checkpoint was his cousin.

However, the Iranian embassy says it still cannot confirm the news as Kabul has presented no document that would prove the individual is an Iranian.

The embassy’s press release has urged Afghan authorities to submit any relevant documents for further consideration.

“Of course, ISIS-linked elements have likely managed to enter Iran, but, given Iran’s measures and determination to fight terrorism, they cannot operate in Iran,” the press release reads.

As stipulated in the press release, Iran and Afghanistan have around 1,000 kilometres of common border across which some of the Afghan refugees residing in Iran travel illegally. So, there is a possibility that ISIS-linked elements cross the border to join ISIS in Afghanistan.

According to the embassy, five Iran-Afghanistan joint commissions are working together to forge closer mutual cooperation on security, border issues and fighting terrorism, and that the Iranian government hopes Tehran-Kabul security and border cooperation will make it possible to firmly combat terrorism on both sides of the common border.
